Came into town looking for a good breakfast spot, this had promising reviews so we stopped here. We sat down got our waters and had our order taken. A hour and a half later without being checked in on our food came, everything was over cooked and burnt. (Toast, potato's, sausage patties, burger) despite being over cooked the food was almost room temperature by the time it got to our table. Such an unexpected surprise to find vegan food in Butte, Montana. We got the Birdie Bowl without cheddar cheese. It came with an almond curry sauce and salsa. Overall it didn't have a lot of flavor, but was still very satisfying. They brought us some sriracha which made it overall much more tasty! They have several vegan options for both breakfast and lunch as well of plenty of gluten-free vegan options. They even have gluten-free vegan dessert options. Our server told us about one dessert not even on the menu, gluten-free vegan lemon raspberry cake. We settled on the gluten-free vegan chocolate cake. OMG...that was THE best cake we have eaten in our lives, including our pre-vegan, pre-gluten free lives! It's worth the trip to just get the cake!!! read more

This is small trendy place. That is vegan, gluten free and meat eater friendly! Not the hipster type of place you think you would find in an old mining town! Thank you to the owners of this place for giving variety to this town. Butte is not really a destination town butte it is cute and has some great architecture so this just adds to the experience. I had the beast sandwich and my friend ordered the cheese and pesto sandwich with bacon. Too bad they did not have green apple or pear to add! That would have rounded it out My sandwich was spicy and I needed that. Horseradish and peppercinis were complementary to the roast beef and swiss. The bottle of pinot grigio was good should have been chilled a tad more but it cleaned the palate and was only 16$ for the bottle cannot go wrong for that! This trendy little café in Butte, Montana is a treasure trove. Lured in by the promise of espresso and, perhaps, a breakfast sandwich, you find yourself planning a return trip almost immediately. Once you've enjoyed the service, the food and the rooms within, you're hooked. Our coffee was served in large, wide mouthed, bowl like mugs. I was very happy with my latte; however, I found myself jealous of my son's Mexican Mocha. He favored me with a taste. It was amazing! My breakfast sandwich was served with home fried (roasted?) red potatoes. This sounds silly: the potatoes were probably the best I've ever had. I expected a standard faire breakfast sandwich. But, nothing was average about this sandwich. Care had gone into the selection of the muffin, and cheese and the bacon was exceptional. I was perfectly prepared. My only real complaint with the meal was the wait to get it. By the time our food arrived, we had to bolt out the door to our event. Otherwise I would have had time to ask about their ingredients, especially the bacon. A special word about the staff: everyone was wonderfully warm and helpful. The manager, Syd (sp?) spent quite a bit of time helping us with suggestions of places to stay and things to see in the area. I've rarely felt so welcome anywhere. By far the best food and ambience I've experienced in Butte, and that's saying a lot because there a lot of restaurants from which to choose. The menu items have a healthy twist to them, which don't sacrifice on the yummy factor. The ambience is artsy, with all kinds of cool art adorning the walls. There is even an outdoor dining area situated within the building, away from the streets yet with a view of the sky, you almost feel like you've been whisked away to some dreamy European nook. I was pretty disappointed with this place. The server told me that the half sandwich was about three bites, mind you this is an $11 half sandwich--that is criminal in my opinion. I ordered the rice bowl instead and it was simply rice, beans, lots of onions, tomato, and a bland almond sauce. This was also expensive and just not worth it. If I could give it a zero I would. The only positive thing I can say is that it appeared clean. The staff was unhelpful and flaky. I sat 15 min before anyone even brought me a menu. While I waited and waited and was ignored, less than 10 feet away three employees all gathered around to fix a radio that wasn't playing. I believe one was the owner who walked back and forth watering plants or chatting about says radio while I sat unattended. When I finally did get to order the food was average at best. The sandwich I ordered was as bland as bland can be, zero flavor. The salad just a pile of sprouts (which have been banned from most restaurants due to safe food regulations - sprouts can contain significant amounts of bacteria). Then after eating quickly, as I wasn't planning to be there more than 30 min (which is how long it took to just get an order in) I waited again. Zero interest from any staff to ask if I needed anything. I had to ask for the check - that was never brought - and finally after another 20 min of sitting and literally tapping my credit card loudly on the table hopping to get the employees attention who were still chatting and not paying attention to customers, I was compelled to get up and walk to the front in the hopes of getting out of there. I fear if I didn't beg to pay if still be sitting in the back.... waiting. I see coffee shop cafes as slightly quicker service establishments. I ordered an ice tea and cold sandwich. I was there an hour and 15 minutes. Not ok. There is no excuse for the lackadaisical attitude of everyone in there. The server was like a deer in headlights the entire time, the owner in his own world, other staff member and radio fixer chewed gum with her mouth wide open like she was a 12 year old girl, and the counter girl was completely checked out. I was so happy that this place was still open during the pandemic. All staff wears masks and seating is socially distanced. Exceeded my expectations. the birdy bowl was topped with almonds, an assortment of fresh veggies, and an excellent creamy almond dressing on top of long grain white rice and black beans. The restaurant's space is artistic, with accents of lime green and abstract paintings. I wish it were warmer on the day I stumbled across Hummingbird Cafe so I could've sat in their outdoor patio and listened to the wind chimes. Hopefully next time. When I walked in, there were two other people ordering coffee. I sat down and was ignored for about five minutes. I ordered the Larry Bird sandwich. The roasted red peppers were very flavorful. The whole wheat bread was a little dry. The horseradish gave the sandwich a nice little kick. They were out of potatoes so I ordered the chips with house made salsa- which was delicious. There were some technical difficulties with some of the coffee making equipment. The server asked me to taste my double shot latte and tell her if it was hot enough because her thermometer was broken. It was fine. And to top it off, the server took my plate right out from in front of me before I was finished. As she was about halfway to the kitchen, she turned around and asked if I was done eating and said: "I'm sorry, that's the rudest thing I've done today." I couldn't bring myself to tell her to return the plate so I could finish the two blue corn chips and salsa. This particular experience at the Hummingbird was a little rough, but I've had two pleasant experiences here. They lost one star for the awkward plate-stealing service and another star for the dryness of the bread and overall uninspired nature of the sandwich. But because Butte lacks decent lunch shops, I know I'll be back. I just hope it was an off day. read more

We ordered the bird sandwich, tomato soup, and chef's salad. The bird sandwich had very little meat on small slices of bread. Disappointing. The tomato soup was over cooked and the milk used was curdled. It didn't have a very good flavor. The chef's salad had big chunks of turkey that was very unappetizing. Such a long wait. We were seated at 12:15. There wasn't a wait at the door at all, but most of the tables had people. Our waitress took almost 20 minutes just to get our drinks and take our order. The table that could seat our family of 4 was very small and our food didn't all fit on the table and we had to use the side wall to hold drinks and condiments. The one good thing I can say is the hummingbird (1/2 sandwhich, soup) was HUGE. Much larger than I anticipated. Not only is it soup and sandwhich, but it also came with a large salad and potatoes. My husband had lox and a bagel and I had the birdie bowl ( basmati rice and beans with veggies and a delicious chutney type sauce on the side). Also tried the fermented celery root! So good.
