Folks gotta give Butte credit...this is a fun, historic town to visit, with a lot of dining and sightseeing treasures! The Hummingbird Cafe goes on the dining treasures list. Whereas the service was a bit on the slow side, the bright and airy dining room was very comfortable and I really enjoyed my meal. I got the tofu scramble...with bacon, naturally. The accompanying potatoes were tasty and I really liked the uber-dense rye swirl bread toast. If I'm back in Butte in the future, I'd love to go to the Hummingbird for lunch as their sandwich line-up sounds amazing! read more

What a find! Uptown Butte is an historic fav plus the space here is delightful. I enjoyed an amazing cup of Hungarian Mushroom Soup and a fresh and tasty blue cheese salad with blueberries and almonds. Definitely will be going here again! And staff couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming. read more

This use to be my favorite place to eat in Montana. Their hours use to be the worst part. I was very nervous after it was sold, but it seemed to get better for a little bit before they try to make it a fancy place--it's Butte and they clearly didn't understand they virtually had no competition for their previous business model. Use to have great vegetarian and vegan items on the menu too. Also know some folks that were treated poorly on a recent visit. I know I will never go here again and will be sharing my disgust for the current state of the Hummingbird with everyone I know. So disappointing when I've given such high recommendations to so many people in the past. Always sad to see a gem go down hill due to poor management. read more

This is a cute little cafe with a French kind of atmosphere. I ordered the gluten free veggie sandwich and salad and my only complaint is that the bread on the sandwich definitely needed to be toasted. Everyone at my table was pleased. Have eaten at the Hummingbird Cafe on a few occasions, both before and after the remodel. Each experience is truly a hit-or-miss. Some of the fare is very delicious, while other fare is no good at all or misleadingly labeled. The food strives to be on the healthier end of the spectrum, but attempts to be vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free usually render the finished food dry, bitter, and unappetizing. Omitted sweeteners are a recurring issue. Once, we ordered a dish with "chutney" only to be served a thin, bitter, liquefied syrup on a sandwich. Initially there was so little spread on, it was nearly undetectable, and so we ordered an extra side (which lead to the discovery of this faux-chutney). It has been disheartening to see that those with dietary restrictions (gluten- and dairy-free) are often taken advantage of by being charged twice as much for half the amount of food. Allergies are not a choice, however, the base ingredients to create gluten- and dairy-free goods are more available and affordable than ever. As for drinks, the available variety is good, but the baristas/bartenders have not all been trained well. Drinks are highly variable and inconsistent. This applies to staff that have been on longer than a normal probationary period, so the quality or training is not likely to change. read more

We originally heard that this cafe had delicious breakfast dishes. NOT! I ordered sausage and eggs my husband ordered ham and eggs. The sausage was soooooo over cooked I actually bounced it off the table. It would of been a better hockey puck in my opinion. My husband's ham was sooooo thin it was see through. Then there were the eggs. Over easy was ordered, hard boil is what we got. Sorry Hummingbird Cafe but that would a big no for us to return. read more

Happy to find the Hummingbird Cafe in Butte. My husband had the birdie bowl which had perfectly cooked basmati rice, black beans, red onion, olives, cilantro, salsa, shredded cheddar, hummus, and vegan curry. He loved it. (I think it was his first "bowl.") And, I had the BLT on fantastic gluten-free bread (would never have guessed it was GF). Reading through other reviews, I found the answer to my question regarding juices, and why they weren't on the menu. I hope they bring juicing back as that would be a nice addition to their menu. I'm going with three stars here. That doesn't mean is wasn't good, it just means it was kind of average. I went in there for lunch, and had a BLT. For the size of the sandwich and sides I felt like I had payed too much money. It was fine, but not really more than an average BLT. Been stopping here for 2-3 years now. It is one of the only restaurants/cafes I know of in Butte that offers higher food quality...some more locally sourced ingredients...better produce etc. In the past, it's been decent for meal options and flavor, though always quite expensive for the serving sizes. I am a smaller adult and don't need a massive serving and often leave here not feeling fully satiated. The things we spend money on when there are few-no other better options, right? We stopped in back on 7/25/22 for a quick breakfast on our way through town. They opened a half hour late and didn't have several staple items...such as eggs...aside from back up carton eggs...and were out of tortillas. We went ahead and ordered simple breakfast sammies on bagels anyway, knowing we weren't getting fresh eggs. Hey, we were hitting road and wanted something easy to eat on the go. Order came, we left with our boxed meals. Get on the road, open box to eat breakfast. Sandwiches were nearly inedible. Neither of us got the bacon we paid extra for...just crappy, small totally unseasoned eggs, avocado, bagel. Dry, no flavor, no bacon, $15 x 2. Beyond disappointed. Won't be going back. read more

We stopped in Butte during a road trip and found the Hummingbird Cafe using Yelp. What a fantastic place. The soup of the day was mushroom wild rice and it was delicious. Perfect with a half sandwich. My husband ordered the falafel sandwich and he loved it (and the potatoes that came with it). I love that they use local foods and that they show where the food comes from on a map in the napkin holder! The waitress was wonderful - she knew we were in the middle of a days-long road trip and gave us delicious raspberry muffins to take with us for our car ride. What was equally impressive was she told me they bake muffins fresh each morning and only sell them that day- no two or three day old baked goods here. I would highly recommend- great food, great staff and such a quaint, nicely decorated place with lots of local art displayed and for sale. read more

The atmosphere here is lovely. The food and service are delicious! The food is pricier than other places, but it is organic. Had a delicious dinner here, with two great vegetarian entrees (Mac and Cheese, and Mushroom Pot Pie), nice tea, and a delicious and affordable cocktails. Great spot for omnivors, vegetarians, and vegan a-like. Only thing our food needed was a touch of salt, but nothing wrong with adjusting it to taste at the table. Don't ever eat the the bison burger from here. Mine was dry and hard as a rock. I love bison burgers but this one I couldn't finish it was so gross. My potatoes were not fully done and still crunchy. This was the worst service I have ever had in Montana. We arrived at 11:25am. No one greeted us. We waited in the first room for a couple of minutes because we didn't know if we should wait or seat ourselves. We asked a passing waitress what to do and she said to seat ourselves. We sat in a section occupied with only two other patrons. The waitress did not acknowledge us. At 11:30am a lady came by to tell us about fundraisers they're doing. At 11:35am we got our own menus since nobody had yet acknowledged us. At 11:40 our waitress noticed us and we ordered our breakfast as well as two muffins and 4 "bottomless coffees." We got the muffins that were on the counter fairly quickly. The waitress was unapologetic and didn't seem to want to be there. At 12pm we got our coffees. They have Black Coffee Roasters coffee, which is great, but this coffee was so watered down it looked like a cup of tea. At 12:10pm we wanted a 2nd cup of coffee, but were told they were out, but some more was currently brewing. One of my parents went to speak to the manager. "We are from Missoula, we drink Black Coffee Roasters all the time and we can see through this coffee." "Oh, well we make it pretty consistently." "We can see through it!" No apology At 12:15pm we were told by our waitress that our food will be the next one served. At 12:18 a waitress with a platter of food passed by. It wasn't for us. At 12:25, an hour since arriving, we still had not been served our food. We got up, offered to pay for the muffins and coffee, which they understood and didn't have us pay for, and we left. read more

These people value the word "organic" but little else, it appears. I took 'em down a star because the service was so lame. It's the kind of place where you order at the counter, and you also have to get your own (room temperature) water from a jug in the middle room. The jug went empty while we were there, and despite our requests, was never refilled--on a hot July day! Half of our four-person group got their lunches in the usual time, the other half had to wait for the girls (I do mean GIRLS) to take a break in their banter/flirting/gossiping to assemble two sandwiches and a bowl of soup. It took almost a half an hour to get our lunches. The salad was fine, but the dressing? Annie's (yes, I asked). The out-of-season sweet potato-peanut soup had no discernible peanuts or peanut flavor, but was chunky and delicious. Sandwiches were fine--tasty, but not impressive. We notices boxes envelopes of instant (organic, of course) oatmeal on the counter. Who wants to pay for instant oatmeal you can get at the store? Nothing was mentioned at the store about local food, and service seemed to be an afterthought. Glad to see someone trying to make healthy food in Butte, but this place needs work. read more

Best breakfast and cafe in Butte, MT! I'm from out of town - Calgary, AB where a free-range omelet will set you back $16. So $8 was cheap! My Omelet tasted amazing and the staff made it even though I missed breakfast. The atmosphere of the cafe was wonderful; cute little place. I could easily spend all day here reading, playing board games. enjoying free wi-fi and coffee refills. My only complaint is the hours are too short and they close Sundays + Holidays :-( read more

Great atmosphere.... terrible service!! I came in with a group and we all sat at separate tables. The table I sat at wasn't cleared and we had to throw away the garbage ourselves that was left from the previous occupants. Then after too long a time we had to ask for service, then we waited even more, finally someone came to take our orders. The food took too long a time to arrive... Other than the wait times, having to clear our own garbage off the table, and waiting even more, the food was pretty good. My husband and I were on a road trip on our way back home and were starving so after consulting Yelp we decided to try this place out. We arrived rather late (3:30 or so and they close at 4:00), but they made us feel welcome. I ordered a cheese quesadilla that also had tomatoes and pepperoncini and came with some fresh salsa and some sort of almond dip. I was absolutely starving and this hit the spot. The salsa was delicious. I loved the feel of the place and really liked that even though we'd arrived so close to closing time they didn't rush us. We were visiting Calgary and Hummingbird has a taste of home. It's a cute and trendy little coffee house just a stone's throw away from the University. You can take out coffee or a smoothie or stay in and check out the menu for breakfast or lunch. We stayed in and got a couple of omelets and I also got me some bagel and lox! The food is considered to be pricey by local standards but for us, it was dirt-cheap. An omelet will cost you around $8. An every better plus side! Games!! Board games, a rubrics cube (which I failed to solve) and game cards. Played Connect 4 for over an hour before and after our breakfast. This is my number one favorite place to get coffee. And I never joke about coffee. They use Black Coffee Roasting beans from Missoula and the gentlemen that work in the morning make LITERALLY the best lattes I have ever had. The staff is always very friendly and I enjoy the fresh, local, organic meals. The cafe is very comfortable and homey. There is rotating local art on the walls, board games in the back and free wi-fi. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a fresh, wholesome breakfast or lunch and certainly to anyone that appreciates the art of a good pour of espresso. read more

I stopped for lunch during a cross-country drive. After days of driving west, my body was sick of beef and potatoes. Thanks to yelp, I was able to find Hummingbird Cafe and get a great lunch. First, the environment is cute and felt great for two travelers who were looking to relax for a couple minutes. It was easy to get to off of 90. The coffee was good and fresh. It was a good roast and I found that Montana coffee is pretty great. I ordered the Slanted and Enchanted. Baked tofu with goddess dressing. I easily subbed the sprouted grain for sourdough. I can't pick one favorite, so let me just list a few of the breakfast items that are sure to please. The French Toast is amazing!
