Lots of potential, so this is more of a 3.5 star review. My husband and I tried Hummingbird last night on a whim and really enjoyed ourselves. Word to the wise, though, this place is SMALL. With approximately 5 two seater tables and a lot of bar and counter seating, it's not the place I'd bring a group, let alone a group of three -- take the time instead to go on a date, or a solo date; the seating is perfect for that. There was a bit of confusion about where to enter and where to sit, and the server didn't give us the best directions on either. Upon sitting, be prepared to squeeze past other diners, but seats are overall comfortable. The menu is simple but elegant, and has an incredible cocktail list. I really wanted to try one, but due to a miscommunication, the server brought out two beers after taking my husband's order, and I didn't want to interject (my fault). I don't believe they have a draft list, but the beer and wine selections are solid too. We ordered shrimp dip, the avocado toast, and the lamb meatballs and found it enough for a light (but semi pricey) dinner. The lamb meatballs were my favorite (especially the smoky roasted red pepper sauce) and the avocado toast was a close second, though I wish the two slices of bread were more equal in size -- while one was a normal size, the other appeared to be the heel of the loaf. Despite a few shortcomings, I'm definitely going to come back here for an intimate dinner experience. I love the concept and the menu, I just need a few of the kinks to be worked out. read more

The biscuits and gravy was amazingg!! I was unsure of the cheese grits and asked my server about them, I didn't order them but she still brought them out to me to have me try them. That was so nice of her!! The cheese grits were good, Couldve maybe used a little bit more salt but they were good. My friends go to Peacemaker PO Boy and they said it was amazing. Love! This is such an awesome addition to the loading dock plaza. The interior is super small so don't expect to get in with a large group, even finding a spot for four can be tricky. With that being said the small intimate vibe of the place definitely adds to my love of it. I went in recently and with the candles lit on every table and the dim lighting it is really a great atmosphere to enjoy an after work cocktail. The wine list is solid and I love their Sauvignon Blanc! For apps I tried out the cauliflower and the ricotta fritters, both were awesome! The cauliflower was seasoned perfectly and had a tasty lemon tahini sauce along with it. The fritters come with a blackberry jam and mascarpone to dollop on your fritters. Service is always super friendly as well. I also get a kick over the fact that their cocktail with egg whites in it includes ovary in the title. A place with a sense of humor for sure. The food was pretty good, the drinks weren't the best.(Mimosas were good though" My friend had a hot chocolate she said the milk tasted and smelled a little expired which when we pointed it out to the hostess with curly hair she said she "couldn't take it off the bill" to which my friend pointed out that the hot chocolate was still full...we got it taken off the bill at the end. This is not a typical "new" restaurant. Colleen and her crew are awesome seasoned professionals. The place is cozy and beautiful. The food is outstanding and the cocktail list is one to be explored. This place is super cute and had great service! The small plates were fun and tasty, but the only one that stood out were the oysters. They were amazing!!! The cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and lamb meatballs were all fine, but didn't stand out. The drink selection is great here and the cocktails were delicious. Decor is very cute and there's outdoor seating. Prices are fine. Parking can be tough because there's a lot of competition for parking from the brewery, but there's street and side lot parking. Our Meetup Dining Group chose this trendy, new restaurant located in a former where house site. The parking lot was packed! Glad we had reservations! Wonderful and innovative drinks and absolutely delicious, small plates! There were about 20 in our group with everyone ordering different drinks and food! Everyone gave it a big thumbs up! I have been to Hummingbird many times during my visits to the Raleigh area. I live in Charleston SC where we have top restaurants and chefs. I have to say that Hummingbird never disappoints me. I've been coming to Hummingbird over the past couple of years since moving to Raleigh. The dishes are pretty hit or miss-- at brunch, the banana bread french toast was very yummy, the huevos rancheros were underwhelming and bland. The cocktails are good. Went here a couple of days ago with a dining group. Overall I thought it was pretty good. I personally tried the wings, fried rice, and the ricotta fritters. As far as the food goes, everything was very good and full of flavor. I would say for the prices the dishes were a little small. But I would say for the quality of the food, the cost ratio wasn't bad. I thought the wings were great, very tasty but I wish they would have came with a dipping sauce. I usually eat my wings with ranch but even a more unique sauce would have went well. The fried ranch had a kick of space to it but it had listed it had sriracha in it so it's to be expected. My favorite item was the ricotta fritters. They were phenomenal! Just the perfect amount of sweetness and I loved the jam that they came with. I did notice that most items on the menu were very unique such as pickled shrimp and chargrilled cauliflower. Unique to my tastes anyway. So I think it's a great place for those who like to try new things. I loved the fact that they have outdoor seating, the inside is sort of small so I think it would be crowded to have a big group in there. I loved the decor, it's simple but it really gives me an upscale vibe. I also liked the fact that the owner came to check on our table twice! Intimate daytime option for a cappuccino and quiche. They also serve cocktails- limited menu. Love being able to avoid downtown yet still feel the downtown vibe. Hats off to hummingbird. That being said don't come here if you expect cheap coffee or a Starbucks vibe. The company's bread & butter is via catering and their event space is next door.. my weekday visit was quiet. The staff was prepping for other events though Zach was awesome. Personally I loved being a guest that was left alone to enjoy the caffeine and the space. Some people want the 100% full court press with their quiche. The food and atmosphere at Hummingbird is top shelf. Both lunch fare and dinner have a good selection. Especially delicious are the charbroiled oysters and the pate. Hummingbird is even seasonally decorated and very festive right now. We have always had good service from a very friendly staff. It is a small kitchen, and so sometimes they have gotten backed up, but any short delays are more than made up for by the terrific ambiance of the place. read more

A really adorable bar and restaurant that is in a very unsuspecting area. TBH if you drove by it, you'd miss it, but this is one place you don't want to miss! I came after a workout class with my friend for a post-workout meal. We came around 10:30, and we were seated promptly. They've got a nice little bar and some small tables. We were seated next to the owner actually who told us about their extended party space in the back! We ordered their quiche of the day (spinach, tomato, and goat cheese) which came with an arugula salad. Both were SO delicious. The crust of the quiche was made with puff pastry instead of pie crust which made it low carb and absolutely light and fluffy! This is the best brunch I have ever has in Raleigh! Period!! My boyfriend and I went here with my parents this weekend, and everything was AMAZING! The food was so good, the cocktails were delicious, and they're patio is great even on a really hot day! We had both oyster dishes to start, and both were super good, but my favorite was the charbroiled! And they also has a tomato pie special that my family split and omg I almost ordered it again for my entree, it was THAT good!!! Luckily I didn't, and I got the chance to try the peacemaker po boy (shrimp and oysters). BOY HOWDY!!!!!!! This was by far the best po boy, and possibly the best sandwich, I have ever had. The shrimp and lobsters were both huge, the roll was so soft and good, and the sauce they put on with it... omg. No words! It was so good!! My parents also got the crab Benedict and shashuka, and both were insanely good. I am usually not a Benedict person, but this Benedict might have converted me.. it was insane! I enjoyed Hummingbird in an equal but different way on my second visit compared to my first. I was already aware that the restaurant checked all of the essential boxes, with good and inventive food, an appropriate and interesting atmosphere, and amiable and sophisticated service. But the second visit allowed me and my date to dig more deeply into the substance of the restaurant given that our initial evaluation and glazy-eyed modes of exploration were behind us. The possibilities of the cocktail list didn't distract us - even though my frothy Don't "Tea"se Me (with gin, green tea, honey and lemon) was refreshing, and her fluted Goddesses and Golfers was an effervescent work of art. The American-tapas, choose-your-own-adventure menu didn't require as much study. And the shabby-chic adult soda-fountain decor was expected. Therefore, we were able to just exist in the space and construct a well-balanced order (for taste and health) of Shrimp Dip and Shaved Brussel Sprouts on the cold side and Pork Belly Bossam, Charred Cauliflower and Frog Legs on the warm. As we wound through lists and explanations of next-day responsibilities and recounted the last few weeks' tumultuous events, we scooped the lightly creamy Cajun-spiced shrimp dip with crunchy-but-malleable homemade potato chips and then shoveled the short pasta-like shavings of Brussel sprouts and Pecorino-Romano cheese into our overworked, starving Monday-night mouths. Properly timed, the pork belly arrived, with the accoutrement-in-crime of romaine lettuce wraps (they must have been out of Bibb), pickled carrot-daikon slaw, a sesame-oil sauce and a vinegar-chili sauce that was a tad too stringent (but fit the taste-profile bill). The pork belly was nicely charred, fatty and sticky like meat candy and seasoned perfectly. Next, the Buffalo-style frog legs slid into view and sat on a creamy spill of blue-cheese sauce, with samurai slices of celery scattered about. The breading on the legs was moderately thick and peppery and sauced with expert chicken-wing understanding, but the legs themselves were underwhelming in flavor (which can be typical of frog legs when encased in boldly flavored breading) and - as odd as it may sound - they were too moist inside. When biting into the legs, there was a slight rush of water or juice that was separate from my anticipatory salivation. Then came the thunderous drop of cauliflower, sporting that spotted roasted-marshmallow char. And thunderous in flavor it was. I don't think - OK, I know that I've never had better cauliflower, and I said so repeatedly in malfunctioning fashion. The citrus-tahini marinade bloomed into an umami shout of cabbage flavor I hadn't thought possible, and it blinded me to the roasted-eggplant puree plated below the mountain of eatable trees. As responsible indulgence would have it, we caved to the sugary fried-dough whispers (taunts, really) of the Ricotta Fritters to finish the meal. The dusted planets of dough were the food around which more than half of our thoughts orbited last time, and the perfectly crisp, spongey balls, mixed with a yin-and-yang mascarpone-jam dipping sauce, ensured the same delightful affliction and the same end this time. Like so many restaurants that have fused international culinary forms with American ingredients and repurposed old-school ways of dining, Hummingbird has style, but it also has skill and, fortunately for Raleigh, an inherent confidence in that skill. read more

I want to start by saying I love hummingbird's food. It is honestly the best pizza I've had in Raleigh by far and their Bibb salad is also fantastic. The only negative thing I have to say is that their customer service has left a little to be desired. I called to cancel an erroneous order and was met with attitude by two separate employees that I spoke to. I understand that these are stressful times but it's no reason to be rude. As with several previous reviewers, there is room for improvement...while also doing a few things right! Atmosphere: I really enjoyed the building they are in! I like the option of indoor and outdoor seating. I came here with little knowledge of what the actual deal was and had no exposure to the catering company that is tied to them. I am familiar with a few of the companies they are sourcing products from and approved of them, figured they were worth a shot. The best way to sum up the experience is: awkward. You walk into the counter seating area with no greeting, no menu, no direction to what you are supposed to do. This is mentioned in other reviews as well and should be rectified. The space is TINY. It's a tiny house of restaurants. If the counter seating section isn't awkward enough, the main dining area is awful. There are five two seater tables, I use this term loosely. They are so close together that the people on either side of you have to physically move their tables for you to access the inside seat. This not only logistically is a nightmare for the diner, but it also is flat out rude. How I do not want to start my dining experience off with is being worried my derriere is going to knock someone's food off the table. The tables are so tiny that if you want to order a slew of items to test drive, good luck. My first trip to a place usually results in ordering about 6 dishes to try; today we stopped at 3. The actual seating they are using is also awkward. It's a backless stool. This is not a place of comfort to stop and enjoy your meal. The other seating option is a counter in the main dining area with the awkward stools. Your back is to the other diners and is just...odd. The space could have been configured better. Service: For such a small place there should be no reason you are not promptly greeted. We weren't. There was no clear direction about how to order, when to order, who our server was, etc. The service was also SLOW. From the time I order an english muffin to when I should have that bad boy in front of me is five minutes, tops. As other reviewers have mentioned, there was no congruency and a lack of even the offer of dessert. Is there dessert? We came for brunch and after ordering our initial round of food there was no followup as to what would have been the more substantial part of the meal. The experience is disjointed, like the menu. Beverages: Water was the best choice. If you think you are going to get a fancy/craft cocktail here, then we need to have a more serious discussion about what you are drinking. The same goes for the coffee. The latte was bitter. I drank it because I am a coffee addict and was hard up for my morning fix. My normal "go to" places for a latte are local legends, which leads to pretty steady disappointment from most places. I'm spoiled in coffee and know it, which does not excuse bad coffee. The food: Limited items are made in house with sourcing from at least 4 other companies. I can't hate on them too much for it because they are at least established and decently respected sources, however, you can get the same stuff and make it at home...and probably better. My sole motivator to actually come was because of Michael's English Muffins. Those bad boys are the best damn english muffin you will encounter around these parts! They have got the english muffins right and the current triple berry jam. I would like to see on the menu that they actually give credit to Michael's English Muffins instead of saying "local english muffin". They give credit to other sources of product such as La Farm and Boulted Bread. What we ordered: mimosa,Irish coffee, vanilla latte ricotta fritters english muffins sticky bun Ricotta fritters - Don't waste your gutty space. These aren't bad, but they also aren't amazing. They lack depth and flavor. You can't taste the ricotta, the cinnamon sugar isn't doing them any favors, they are bland and could benefit from being served with some side options. I would rather have had them with no cinnamon sugar on them. Give me some straight up ricotta fritters with a side of cinnamon sugar to dip them in and a side of jam. We each had one and left the rest. Our server didn't even inquire about why we didn't eat them. English muffins - As previously stated: YES. Do them. Sticky bun - Yes and no. I would order this again! This is made in house and worth it. The base is fluffy, moist, and pretty much a perfect sticky bun base. The size is HUGE and too much. It would be doing everyone a favor if they cut the size of it in half. The topping is over the top. A butterscotch bourbon sauce with a ton of pecan pieces douse the top of the bun. Personally, the bourbon in the sauce is too strong. The butterscotch is so incredibly sweet mixed with the overpowering booze. I made reservations for Mother's Day through opentable a few weeks ago, when we got there they said they had no record of our reservation and we're sorry not sorry but we could eat at the bar. My mom came from out of town for Mother's Day and was looking forward to this, instead of them offering to accommodate us or free drinks for the inconvenience, or anything at all, my family had to sit crowded in at the bar and eat mediocre food that was quite honestly overpriced for what it was. They placed us in what seemed like the spot for the unwashed. We waited 10 minutes for the waitress to come to offer drinks or take order. Tried this place for the first time - and loved it! We got small plates - smoked deviled eggs, lamb meatballs, and chargrilled oysters. All were fantastic! Cocktails were perfectly made, even with our request for low-sugar versions accommodated. The atmosphere is cool, and the staff all extremely engaged and attentive.
