The food is incredible. We eat here weekly and love it. We have never had anything that wasn't truly fresh, delicious, perfectly seasoned. It's great. The staff are amazing. They are gracious, attentive, delightful. The ONLY thing stopping a 5 star review is that I despise the lack of compostable to go containers. Come on now. The earth is dying under the weight of plastic. Please love the earth as much as you love making amazing food. I tried the meat in eggplant and tomato sauce it came with a side of rice, pita, and salad. I could have gone away with the pita tbh it wasn't that good but the eggplant was superd I'd get it again in a heartbeat!! The salad had an interesting tangy dressing I could have gone lighter handed with it, but still tasty. I also tried the mushroom pide which is the flat bread and let me tell you this was so delicious it actually caught me by surprise!! The bread is light but chewy and the filling had mozzarella, mushroom, and egg. Dip this into their killer hot sauce and you'll be amazed omg. If you come here definitely get the pide - I can't wait to come back to try the other varieties they have!! No matter what you end up getting YOU MUST ASK FOR THE HOT SAUCE. Catered hummus at the beginning of the month for a work team meeting. We ordered online but had a couple of questions so we called the store. They were able to answer our questions so that we could finalize our order quickly. On the day of, they had already started packing our food and had it set for me to easily take to my car. We ordered the dip spread with pita, a Greek salad, falafels, rice, gyro, chicken kebabs and beef kebabs. The beef kabob is more flavorful, juicy and tender than most top end steak houses I've been to recently. Owners are on site and overseeing every aspect of your dining experience. Lunch 1/22/22 Looking for a place to eat lunch, we stumbled onto Hummus Mediterranean Kitchen. I ordered the Kofte Kabob with Lamb and Beef, and my husband ordered the Cured Meat Pide. Both were made to order and delicious. The kabob was so tender, juicy, and paired well with their rice, salad, and pita bread. My husband's cured meat pide was similar to a flat bread pizza with pepperoni. Their crust was very good. Hummus is definitely a solid Mediterranean spot. We definitely will be back. read more

This place is great for a quick, easy, healthy meal conveniently located in downtown San Mateo and is one of my go-to spots. An order at the counter restaurant (or order online), the staff are super friendly and the ingredients are fresh and delicious. My go to orders are the Chicken Gyros, Chicken Kebab, or the Beef and Lamb Gyro plate. Can't go wrong. Comes with meat, rice, and a pretty substantial salad. Food quality and service has plummeted over the past year. Koftedes (lamb & beef) platter ordered on 5/13/24 were left on the grill too long and led to a 20 minute delay getting to the table. Service is cynical at times and how they can ask for a tip when all they do is ring you up and bring your food to table is yet another reason to avoid this place. I've been a customer here since 2005 and have seen the ebbs and flows to this business. The low point was during Covid where they cut back on ingredients to a point of absurdity. Kale Salad is a perfect example. They no longer use dried apricots and have substituted oranges. They've eliminated the toasted slivered almonds. The portion size of salmon is approximately half the size it was five years ago. Rude, arrogant service by Oleh, who clearly sees no value to long term customers. In all my years not a single person has ever tried to develop a conversation with the customer. The customer is treated as a transaction. Compare this to Sapore across the street. Brad the manager there cares about his customers. I go as much for the experience of being valued as much as for the food. Hummus Mediterranean Kitchen has lost my business. I ordered gyro plate to go, which comes with a white pita cut in half, salad, and rice. It was more food than I needed for a meal, which is always nice. The salad vinaigrette is a good flavor. For me the gyro meat was too thin and dry, which was disappointing, so I'd probably go with something else next time. The rice was tasty but perhaps a bit over cooked (slightly mushy in texture). We are fans of Hummus place at Stanford, but San Mateo location is different. Quality of the food is the same, but vibes and ambience is more like canteen. My husband always go for lamb shish kebab it is good. I went for salmon - it varies, not as predictable as kebab. The place and the team are very kids friendly. The dinner plates come with rice, salad, and a pita bread so you have a well balanced meal in one container. Both of my experiences proved to be fresh tasting and authentic meals. The meat was so dry and tasted old, very poor quality. I couldn't get myself to eat any of it without the tzatziki and the other hot sauce on the table. I also couldn't finish it bc it was so bad. I couldn't taste any hummus inside either. It was honestly the worst Mediterranean restaurant I've gone to and am confused about other reviews. I'd rather go to SAJJ close by, which is also cheaper with bigger portions. Service and interior decor were great. It'd be a great spot to only hangout but definitely would not recommend any meat dishes here.
