Good Mediterranean spot on the San Mateo downtown. The place has a nice vibe to it, it is bright and lively. Both the indoor seating and outdoor seating area is pretty clean. We ordered a Chicken and Rice plate, it tasted like the chicken was nicely marinated and perfectly cooked, the rice was flavourful and hell lot of colourful seasoned vegetables. Their white sauce is also pretty good. Also ordered a Lamb Burger - Lamb meat again nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked, the bread was great as well but highlight of the evening were their fries. In my opinion, the fries were better than the burger, all the meat, the chicken plate and everything. Not too oily like the fast food chains and very crispy - fries alone is enough to make me visit their place again. If I could leave ZERO stars I would, but you have to leave at least one! So last night I decided on having a Gyro for dinner, good idea... BAD idea to choose Hummus, so I had a Lamb/Beef gyro asked for the Tsaziki on the side,and hummus, hummus was good except for the fact they only give you one tiny piece of Taftoon (flat bread) for the good amount of hummus, which is not nearly enough, you'd think when a guest is paying 9 bucks for an order, they'd at the very least give you enough bread to enjoy your order!! Now here's the WORST part.. The meat in the gyro was absolutely disgusting and so dry with absolutely No flavor whatsoever!! With as I said the Tsaiki(sauce) was like water with NO flavor either!! I'm in the restaurant biz and have been for many years, if we ever served something as disgusting as this... We'd be out of business!! Lastly, the staff that works there is extremely rude and abrasive, perhaps if the owner was ever there he should teach them how to or how not to treat a GUEST, because theguests are what keeps the restaurant open!!! Late post- I'm very disappointed in this place solely because of this woman. We ordered 3 pints of beers with our meals and she dropped off the beers in three different glasses, two of which hold 11 oz and one that holds 16 oz. We then asked her why they were like that and she said that "all the beers come in the Stella glasses", which is a lie. So we asked her if she was going to give us the difference, and she said no. We were all shocked at this level of disrespect, not just because of how rude she was but also because she was ripping us off. I flagged down the other staff member (guy) and explained to him the situation. We pulled up on our phones the amount of Oz in a pint glass and Stella glass. He was receptive and apologetic and said he would give use the difference (which we paid for). After she saw him talking to us, we could see her confronting him and arguing with him! Thank you to the guy server that helped us out but Ms Stank Face really ruined our whole dining experience. She gave us dirty looks for the remainder of our meal and never apologized or attempted to make it right. To Ms. Stank Face, you don't deserve any of the monetary tips we left that night but here are some life tips, you are in dire need of an attitude adjustment. I passed by this bustling Mediterranean spot when I was strolling through Downtown San Mateo one Saturday afternoon and made a mental note to come back and try it. However, my brain often works like an overused deck of post-its where the adhesive has worn off and mental notes fall to the ground rarely to be picked up again. This was one of those rare post-its that must have gotten stuck to my butt because here I was several months later at lunchtime in a weekday. It was quite busy, but there was a good amount of space in the restaurant, so it didn't feel crowded despite the rush. I ordered the $8.95 Greek Salad and had them add Chicken Gyros for three more dollars (photo: http://bit.ly/2O5fy2t). They certainly give you a hefty amount of poultry here, but it didn't overshadow the fresh crispness of the salad. It had all the necessary ingredients - Romaine lettuce, kalamata olives, tomato, cucumber, red onion, bell peppers, feta, and a lemon vinaigrette. The combination worked quite well. Had I known how hearty the salad would be, I probably wouldn't have ordered the $3.95 side of the Classic Hummus, but hey, it was only $3.95. Everything was so good! I was struggling to decide what I wanted to order when I was strolling through downtown San Mateo, and came across Hummus! Their menu is very unique and their staff did a fantastic job helping explain what the items were and what were most popular and highly recommended. We eat at Hummus at least a couple of times a month! We love that the menu has a variety of items to choose from, so there's something for everyone. The freshness and quality of ingredients is always top-notch and the service is always excellent. I especially enjoy the chicken Giro platter and the stuffed eggplant. My wife loves the wraps and my daughter LOVES the kid's Giro plate. Best of all, the prices are extremely reasonable. We stopped by on the advice of a friend who grew up eating Mediterranean food. Overall, the meats were on the dry side for me. Compared to Sajj, the other Mediterranean spot nearby, this place was more generous with the meat portion, but I liked the flavors / cooking more at Sajj. I got the combo plate and the hummus flight, and shared an order of fries. The combo plate comes with rice, salad, and pita bread. The meats are Koftedes (ground lamb and beef patty), lamb and beef gyros, chicken and beef kebab. I loved the rice-- so subtly seasoned, salty, and buttery without making you feel heavy after. Made me feel same way I feel after eating some good popcorn 4/5 on flavor, but wish the portion of rice was a bit bigger. The salad was a refreshing break from the heavier nature of the meats. The salad consisted of cucumber, mixed greens, cucumber, and pickled purple lettuce for a nice pop of color. Pretty standard 3.5/5. The pita was unfortunately also dry, although there was a slightly pillowy texture to it 3/5 Onto the meats! The beef kebab was, well, meaty. I wish that there was more moisture and flavor in the meat. I would echo similar thoughts on the chicken kebab though this was slightly moister. The Koftedes was probably my favorite since it had some lamb and slight smoky flavor. The gyros was alright, but again, dry. 3/5 for flavor, 3.5/5 for meat portion. The hummus flight sounded fun, but I would pass next time. It comes with four hummus flavors-- original, olive+feta, chipotle, and beet. The chipotle hummus was a beautiful burnt orange color, but the pronounced red pepper taste was unfortunately not there. They were quite generous with the feta and olives on the olive+feta hummus, this was just personally too strong for my liking, but I could see others liking it. The beet hummus was, well, a beet hummus. Definitely true to taste (slightly sweet!), with a striking magenta color. Interesting, but would pass next time. Original was pretty standard. Overall, the hummus was thick without being overly hard to spoon. 3.5/5 on quality, but 3/5 on taste. This came with a side of pita bread. Finally, the fries! These were slightly reminiscent of McDonald's fry in flavor. Pretty standard though 3.25/5. read more

This restaurant seems to be pan-Mediterranean rather than just Greek, with Turkish sausage in some dishes. The place smells good as you go in, and the menu is not very big and simple to navigate. I tried the koftides wrap. It is quite spicy even without the orange colored sauce on the side--must be the house sauce added to the wrap. The flavor was very good. I moved to Baywood one year ago, a short five-minute walk away, and this quickly became my favorite restaurant. At first the beef kebab was fantastic, but a few months ago I noticed it was overly marinated (probably too long), which makes the meat kind of mushy. But more disappointing - every time I ordered it, it was over-cooked and dry. When this started, every time I ordered it, I asked that it be cooked medium. I told them "medium should still have some pink." But nothing works - it's always over-cooked (these are all pick-up, take-home orders, so I'm not there to take it back and get it redone). Two times ago I was mad so I called and complained, and I was told the next order would be complimentary. A week later I got my complimentary beef kebab. When I got home and cut into it, I was happy to see the meat was a little pink inside. But then the first bite was cold. I thought it was because it the salad was on top of it. But then every subsequent bite was cold too. I realized it was because they pre-cook it and warm it up on the grill when it's ordered. This explains everything - mystery solved! The pieces have grill marks on them, but they aren't new. I've been in there and seen the cooks squishing the pieces down on the grill and now I realize they're trying to warm them up. I remember thinking "Why don't they teach these guys how to cook?!" No wonder it's always over-cooked. It's not the proper way to cook steak. It will never be juicy and delicious. At near $25 a shot, I've wasted a lot of money on meals I didn't enjoy and fed to my dog usually. I've discovered Millbrae Kebabs & Gyros next to Trader Joe's. Their steak and chicken is juicy and delicious, and they put hummus on their plates, which no one else does. It's not a short walk for me, but worth the drive. I doubt I'll be returning to Hummus again. P.S. - I'm forced to give a star rating, so I had to think about it - I will say their rice and salad is very good. read more

I've been on a Mediterranean food craze since California has been under the Shelter In Place orders and Hummus Mediterranean has been one of my favorites. They're located in downtown San Mateo so first of all, parking can be a pain, but there are also many other restaurant and food choices within walking distance when you actually and finally find parking. The inside is spacious and can handle a lot of diners. I've always taken food to go in the past here and during the month of March and April, this is still the same. My go to entree is the Chicken Kebab dinner plate, which comes with grilled seasoned cubes of chicken, rice, salad, and pita bread. This always fills me up so the portions are a good size. The chicken has always been juicy, tender and well seasoned. I've learned the differences between other Chicken Kebab restaurants and Hummus Mediterranean has one of the most consistent products in my opinion. The staff here has always been nice and courteous. When this whole Shelter In Place ends, I will look forward to actually dining here and not just coming in for takeout. read more

This place goes a step above and has a little freezer that you can grab ice from next to the water spigot. If you like variety, want to try everything, or can't decide, try the House Combo platter has lamb kebab, chicken kebab, gyros, and beef kofte. All platters are served with salad and rice. This was some of the best mediterranean food I've ever had! I came here with some coworkers a couple weeks ago, and it was such a cute place with nice outdoor dining. We got an appetizer trio as a starter, and the dolmas and falafels were so good! The falafels here were different than any I'd had before, and were perfectly crunchy on the outside, but soft on the inside! I ordered the Vegetarian Mousakka as the main, and it was simply amazing. It's an eggplant cooked with mozzarella and bechamel sauce, and it came with a side of rice and pita bread, both of which were soft and delicious. The freshly baked homemade pita bread is an absolute delight. I am typically not a big pita bread person but these are delicious and a perfect companion to the beef kabobs I ordered. Always served warm and looks like a cake :-). My family and I always enjoy our meal at the relaxed open air setting at Stanford Mall.
