The dining room is basic and loud but I could see people were receiving good care. They boast a high 100 health score and it was very tidy. The food was presented nice for take out but I thought the chicken was tough and the sweet and sour sauce was just not typical. The fried rice was bland. $32 for two dinners. My hopes weren't that high for finding a quality Chinese restaurant in Augusta, let alone a vegetarian-friendly one. But I found this little spot in a shopping center on the outskirts and they're doing some stuff right. I was drawn in by a wallet-friendly lunch special menu, which yielded a decent variety of vegetable and tofu-based options. My tofu with hot peppers was a very credible Hunan-style dish as the place's name would suggest, with dried hot peppers and a lively black bean sauce. The option for brown or fried rice was no extra charge, or if you did want to pay more you could get lo mein instead. I added a spring roll, which compared to my main dish was a bit overpriced but was tasty and, as with the other dishes around me, nicely plated. Their menu suggests a Malaysian influence as well, and I'd be happy to return for dinner to try something different. read more

I've eaten at Hunan cafe twice in the past few weeks and was very impressed. I'm on the hunt for a go to take out spot in Augusta and this one is close. The sesame chicken was delicious! Egg rolls and crab angels were on point. Japanese noods were very very tasty! The only thing I would change is their fried rice. It's basically just white rice cooked with soy sauce. If you're like me and want your fried rice with all the extras (green onion, egg, carrots, peas, lil pork chunks) do yourself a favor and just stick with their normal white rice. The lack of ooomph in their fried rice is the only thing stopping this from being a 5 star for me. read more

Its been an extremely long time since we have been in here. Steamed dumplings to start with and share, then wife had Hunan chicken and I had the shrimp and pineapple curry. Wife said here chicken was quite spicy. Mine was good, liked it. We were sat next to the register and there was quite a lot of foot traffic for take out which was distracting and the waitress seemed to take for ages to get my credit card to pay. In fact I got up and went to the register to pay. Didn't feel like the Hunan of years back and because I had to get up and go pay myself I have given 3 stars. The place was bustling and nearly full when we arrived at 5:45 on a Monday night. I can see why, food was great, service was quick, and prices were reasonable. We ordered some of the Malaysian and Thai specialties at the recommendation of our server. The spicy curry dish was delicious and included a mix of standard 'stir fry mix' vegetables as well as some fresh seasonal veggies. The Malaysian noodle dish needed a touch of the house special hot sauce but with that addition was excellent. For kids you can easily accommodate the pickiest eaters here with sides like plain steamed veggies and rice, we were also able to order plain tofu which is our preschooler's favorite food. I can't wait to go back and try some of the classic Chinese American menu items. This place will be our go to Chinese restaurant in Augusta. I'm not sure why I've never written a review for Hunan Cafe. I've been eating there for years and it is one of my favorites in Augusta. One of my besties and I found this gem when we both first moved to Augusta and even though we're from different places it reminded both of us a taste of home when we are missing asian food. Since COVID I haven't eaten there but prior to covid I would day I have no complaints about the service. They are attentive and get to know you and helpful with their menu. I get takeout frequently from there and have never gotten my order wrong and I typically order several dishes at once. Some restaurants you just have your go to items and do stray from your typical order but at Hunan cafe there are so many great dishes I'm constantly rotating my orders. Some of my faves include beef chow fun, Malaysian mee goreng, chicken string beans in black bean sauce, chicken and eggplant, coral shrimp and scallops, black pepper beef, moo shu chicken. Though I would try this place out so glad I did. I had the Chilean Sea Bass it was delicious. I also had the crab angle was suprised how fresh and tasty they were. Excellent food at a good price and appropriate portion! We stopped here for a late lunch and were not disappointed! The area is small but very clean. Has somewhere between 10-14 tables, at most. Decided to try this quaint Chinese Restaurant today. The food score on the door was a 100%. Having a good food score is a must for me. From 4-6pm they offer an early bird special that provides fried rice and an egg roll with your meal. I ordered the Hunan Chicken and Hot Sour Soup. My spouse ordered the sesame chicken. The Hunan Chicken was fresh hot and some what spicy hot. Lots of fresh vegetables. Rice was plain fried rice and was good for what it was. The Hot and Sour soup was surprisingly delicious. This was very hearty lots flavor and plenty of ingredients that didn't leave it wanting. The egg roll was good for what it was, I have had better. Lastly I tried the sesame chicken and the sauce they used was just right. The chicken wasn't as crunchy as I would expect for this type of dish. You can tell that the chicken is freshly cut chicken breast. However, with the batter that they used it should have been fried longer to make it crunchy. Overall this is a good place to visit. I would like to visit it again and try something different to see what else they offer. Also it got really busy so they must be doing something right. Service was a bit slow but very polite. This is a wonderful little treasure in an otherwise unassuming little strip mall. I have driven past it many time when looking for the pizza shop and liquor store and the sign outside looks kind of gimmicky but the food is by far the best authentic Chinese food and the attention to detail is quite apparent. From what I can tell, it's not just Chinese food but I'm not quite adventurous enough to stray away from my favorites. The sweet chili sauce and mangos that passed me during lunch looked quite tempting though. Every time I've sat down to eat, the service has been amazing, the vegetables were crispy and blanched just right and the heat was spot on! I was however disappointed that there is no level of spiciness for the Pad Thai, but it was still delicious and yummy. The waitress (there's only 1) was super nice and polite. My family and I came here on a whim and hankering for Chinese food. The Beef Chow Fun is exactly as my mom would make it. The vegetable are crisp and freshly prepared. Everything was on point. It was a very great meal with great service. Update 2/16/2018 Ordered to go for Lunar New Year. Hubs had a spicy curry chicken - very tasty, not very spicy, but the veggies were just a bit over cooked. I ordered the beef chow fun (as usual). Always delicious and done well! Kiddo had the teriyaki skewers with broccoli. We were worried r would be too dry, but it was tender and well done. hunan's staff always deliverers what we want and is always super polite. Here's my critique: 1) Paid the same price as any other Chinese restaurant, but got about half the food. 2) My frozen egg roll was microwave burnt. 3) Chicken and sesame sauce was ok. 4) One scoop of rice, was ok. The highlight of my meal was the quick delivery and the very nice delivery guy. Seriously, top notch delivery services. I ordered the Bhudda's Delight and Tofu Pad Thai. The Bhudda's Delight was ok, although for all of the sauce it somehow lacked flavor. The Pad Thai was mostly just a pile of brown-ish noodles with a few peanuts and bean sprouts on top. Nothing to add color, nothing to add texture, and again, the sauce was unremarkable. I see a lot of good reviews, so maybe it was just an off-night, but for the price I don't know if I'll risk another shot. I'd rather just drive the 15 minutes to Fuji Asian and know that it'll be worth the carbs and sodium.
