As many of you that follow me know, I'm partial to family-owned restaurants over commercial chains -- and what a nice family it is! Incredible service! You won't be made to wave your arms here. The buffet was well stocked and they kept refreshing it the whole time we were there. No over-steamed food here. It looked great and even included assorted desserts. Because the menu was new to us, we skipped the buffet and ordered from the menu. The pan-fried dumplings, hot and sour soup, and egg roll were each delicious. I stopped on my way through this town and ordered Hunan beed and an egg roll to go. While waiting for my order I observed the buffet being only 1/4 full in individual steamers, but no one was in the restaurant . Granted, they could have had a lot of diners earlier as this was near 7 pm. But the quality of food I received for takeout was uneatable. The egg roll had a rotting taste inside and was unfit for consumption. The Hunan beef was full of beef and veggies, but it was not the taste of any Hunan beef I have ever tasted, with a runny sauce. Had I access, this meal would have qualified for a visit from the health department. This was the worst $19.00 Asian meal I have ever had, overpriced. The wait service was very good and the ladies room was very clean. The restaurant itself has nice decor, so there is potential with a different chef. read more

My husband has been craving Chinese food so I decided to go ahead and we do that for lunch. We got there at 11 AM. The buffet was full. It all looked good and fresh. I can't eat that much so I did not get that but my husband did and he said it was OK not the greatest. I got hot and sour soup. It was good but very overpriced and not hot (temperature). I ended up taking that home so I could heat it in the microwave. I also got two spring rolls that were burnt to a crisp like a hard cracker and mush and goo inside. I have no idea why I tipped 20% to the waitress maybe it's because I just do that regularly. But she was upfront and hard to find. We were the only ones in there until about 11:30 and then three other tables came in. The glasses for the drinks were plastic and they were so old that they were frosted in some areas. You couldn't even see through them. Had to send the first drink back because it had a black thing floating in it. The waitress never asked if we wanted a refill either. I had asked for a lemon for my water and never received it. The restaurant was dirty. The ledge by the buffet was thick with dust. There was a glass wall border that looked like it hadn't been washed in years. it was smeared and had food on it from the buffet just splattered all over it. The duck sauce that was on the table, looked like it had been there for years and it was just disgusting and I usually use that on my spring rolls. My husband now has had his fill of Chinese and we don't have to do that again for a very, very long time. But it won't be to come back to this restaurant. The owner did come out to talk to a couple and he seemed extremely nice. I don't think I would recommend this restaurant. Buffet was a reasonable price but menu items were overpriced! Started off my meal with a vegetable spring roll. Very small about a half inch in circumference. Tasty but almost no veggies. Tsing Tao always good. My main course was cashew chicken prepared crispy. I have eaten at many Chinese restaurants all over the country and Hunan's is by far my favourite. I have tried all of the other Chinese restaurants in Alpena and I have been disappointed over and over again. I no longer go anywhere else. I don't eat out very often but if I am in the mood for Chinese Hunans' is my go to. I especially like the Hunan Chicken, extra spicy with fried rice. I prefer to order the dinner because of the larger portions. I usually get take out so I choose the Russian soup with the meal. The owner Jimmy is always professional and courteous. I don't know what his secret is but he has got me hooked. The environment is always clean and the restaurant does not smell like fish as other Chinese restaurants that I have visited unfortunately have smelled like fish, and not just a little bit. Surprisingly when I eat in the restaurant or pick up some takeout the place is not very busy which is crazy to me. I have a theory that at least one in four Americans is an absolute moron. Really the percentage is probably more. I also see pretty busy parking lots at other Chinese restaurants in town which I do not understand. This confirms my theory that most people walking around this country are a product of the piss poor education system in this country. In reality the ratio of ignorant people in this country is more like two in four. I have been eating at Jimmy's since he was located on the lake next to KFC. The food has not changed a bit, it is always good and if you like it less spicy or extra spicy they do a good job of preparing the meal appropriately. read more

First let me say that my husband and I have just moved to Alpena and have lived all over the USA. This being said we may have higher standards. Our first experience was a nightmare! First I tried to order through the app Bring me that, big mistake. After an hour when they never showed up but charged my card $27 for my food, I called the restaurant. They had never received and order. Ok no problem I'll just order directly. I told him that I didn't have a vehicle and that my husband would pick up the food at 9:05 when he got off work. He told me no, they close at 9 and didn't want to wait 5 minutes. Ok I told him I'd call a Lyft. He took my order at 8:15 and that I had to pick up in 20 minutes. Since the Lyft didn't work either as I never got a response from them. I actually rode my bike 2 miles to pick up my food before 9. I know, dumb. But I had ordered already and waisted time waiting for Lyft. Anyway I get to restaurant all tired and sweaty by 8:50 That's 10 minuets later than he told me it would be ready. Guess what! It wasn't ready! Guess what time he brought my food out! 9:03. I was furious. I told him everything and he said it wasn't his fault. I asked for a discount and agreed on 15% He took my card and charged me $42 for a $27 order. When I told him he was wrong again, he yelled at me in front of all other customers that were still there after 9 on a Friday night. I left than called my credit card company to cancel the charge. On top of all that the food was inedible. I swear I'm not saying that because of my ordeal. It was disgusting! read more

I went there October 4th 2023 for my mom's birthday celebration this used to be her favorite restaurant she knew the owner he even gave her his recipe for the green beans that she likes so much needless to say the place really went downhill from many years ago when we used to go there my party for my mom was a party of 7 we had the back private party room we ended up being the only people in the whole restaurant so it really didn't matter the waitress was sitting on her phone sitting up front very unattentive of us she had no other people to really wait on two tables came in after us with a total of four people and they ended up leaving without paying because the food was so horrible we went there at 6:30 p.m. there was barely anything on the buffet I paid $158 for the seven of us and we were scraping trying to figure out what we could eat off the buffet either it was empty or the stuff was dried up with no taste there was no selection the green beans and the soup were good that's the only thing we actually had but was it worth $20 a person I would think not I even got up and got a serving tray to help clear off our tables so we could do my mom's birthday cake the waitress got up off of her chair and asked if the tray was clean and I said no she goes well I'll wipe it off for you she never checked in on us I cleared all the plates myself I even teased my family and said my name is Sue I'll be your waitress today had I know I wouldn't have prepaid and included a tip before we even sat down to eat but because it was a private party I wanted to make sure my family would feel comfortable knowing everything was taken care of I honestly will never go back again it's a shame that I spent that much money on such a meal like that the owner Jimmy did come out after I told him it was my mom's birthday and he made her a virgin pina colada and didn't charge me that was one good thing I was embarrassed that I took my family there and they're not picky eaters and they said honestly we don't know what we can actually eat off this buffet and I agreed with them and I'm not picky either I wish I would have chosen someplace other I feel like my mom's birthday dinner was ruined. If I could have done zero stars for service and zero stars for quality and quantity of food I would have done it.. it's a shame because the owner Jimmy seems really nice I was so let down and I apologized to my family for taking them there and suggesting it.. I never write a review good or bad it took me a lot to want to put a negative review on here but it bugged me even the day after. This was the worst Chinese experience. First time here, ice inside on doors, no rug when you walk in...get ready to slip like I did! Buffett was ice cold, and there were only a few things at the Buffett! 5pm, with only a few tables. What I did eat was freezer burnt, the meat was so tough. Went for the first time to this restaurant and decided on the buffet. Our server was surly to say the least. The food selection on the Buffet was very limited and the quantities in the trays almost non existent, in fact, some selections were empty. We were told that if we wanted something that had run out, to just ask and they would get some. This meant that you had quite a wait before you got what you wanted, if at all. I had to ask for some fried rice on my first visit but they never did get more. I was very disappointed with the service, the lack of choices and the fact that you had to ask for so many items. Well, this was a surprise! Last ate here in it's previous West side of town incarnation (and yes, snarky non-flyover people, there is a West side of Alpena.) It was ok then - not great, but serviceable. Took the fam there over the Fourth weekend. Very good! Eschew the buffet - it's okay, but hey? How good is ANYTHING that sat on a steam tray for an hour? I mean, really? Their house special items are tasty, well-prepared, and obviously fresh. They are willing to customize, although they seemed a little baffled that we were sharing dishes, and not trucking over to the "all you can maw" buffet. I agree with other reviews that the food wouldn't raise an eyebrow even in metro Detroit / downstate; but up here, it's kind of a gem. The price is on par with what you'd expect from a Chinese buffet anywhere. While the selection may seem kinda small, the food is very good and doesn't taste like typical frozen factory food like other buffets - and there's no ridiculous tray of pizza or whatever like some places have. As stated in an earlier review, it is pretty standard Chinese food. It would be just another Chinese place in a larger metro area. Definitively not a bad place, just nothing special Why do I say this? Limited number of offerings on the buffet (5/6 entrees.) The sesame chicken had too much doughiness. Very limited desert options. Watery Tea. The Crab Rangoons (sp?), however, are AMAZING. Again, it was fine, just not that great. My parents seemed to like it more than me. Price was about right. read more

Obviously it's not gourmet Chinese food but for the location and the price it is pretty amazing. I used to always get their Lemon Chicken which was super tasty and the crab ragoons were always excellent. We used to go here after every the opening show of every play we put on in high school and everyone was able to find something they liked. :) read more

I had a room at the Best Western hotel 40 steps away from Hunan Chinese Restaurant. I was a little hesitant to try it because the outside doesn't look like much, but I've eaten Chinese food in San Francisco, LA and NYC and have learned not to judge a place from the outsider. When I got there the buffet was closed so I could only order from the menu. So I went to my go to meal WICH was the Kung Pao Chicken with fried rice. I like mine a little spicy and I asked how spicy it came. The server explained that I would not taste too much heat if I ordered it the way it came and recommended that I order it hotter if I liked spicy food. So I ordered it spicy. When I bit into it I couldn't believe the flavor that the chef put into the dish. After the initial bite, I followed up with a bite of the fried rice. The flavors combined with the Kung Pao Chicken were utterly amazing! I called the server over and explained to her of my past experiences in my dining experiences in California and NYC and told her that this put them all to shame! She was ecstatic that I appreciated the food. I was so elated with the food that I ordered a sweeter dish to take back to my room to enjoy later. She recommended the sesame chicken and it did not disappoint. Before I left the restaurant I had the privilege to meet the Chef. I am a prior Marine and his son is stationed at Camp Pendleton California. We spoke a little about the military and I thanked him once more for a great meal. He has won multiple awards for his cooking skills and I cannot say thank you enough for such a great dining experience! Phenomenal. The Russian Soup is amazing. Sweet and Sour Chicken, crab Rangoon, and egg rolls are well above the standard. Dishes are artfully prepared and you can taste and see the culinary pride put into the dishes. Also very proportional to the pricing. read more

The people were nice, No Chinese people, that disappointed us. Whenever we go to a Chinese restaurant there is usually Chinese people. We got the buffet, Low selection of food. Note that this place has moved. It is now on M-32 at the west side of town, almost opposite Wal-Mart. "Jimmy's," as my friends and I know Hunan, is the best Chinese restaurant I've encountered anywhere. They have a lunch buffet which is good. Thing is, though, that Jimmy tends to use ingredients such as fresh vegetables and good spices, which seem to be alien to most restaurants. For the full proper effect I think you should really order something off the menu, so it will be cooked fresh for you. They offer lunch specials which are full meals with "smaller" portions, still plenty large enough for most purposes. I appreciate their hot and sour soup. It seems most of the restaurants in this region have trouble making this with any flavor, but Jimmy pulls it off well. They offer many spicy dishes. I would rate these as slightly to moderately spicy, nothing really hot, but hey, this is Northern Michigan, after all, where some of my relatives have complained that a certain brand of cottage cheese has too strong a flavor. At least they do know how to use spices, and will spice it up for you if you ask. I like their Mala Chicken, Basil Chicken, and various "hot pot" dishes served sizzling in a cast iron pot. I ordered a Mala Chicken hot pot once and they served it up for me before I realized that it wasn't even on the menu; they just made it up special for me because I wanted it that way. Try THAT at a chain restaurant. I forget the name of it, but they even had a tofu dish I liked. Me. Tofu. Liked. Yeah, hard to believe, but they did it. Nice, friendly service. I ordered the malo tofu hot pot, which was pretty good, with lots of chewy tofu and veggies. Only downside is that it's marked as spicy on the menu and had no spice to it at all. Really friendly service and great decor inside. Honey and I am went inside since pregnant woman like me is craving for sour soup and beef so we decide to try this one. We immediately regret our decision of ordering pick out than just sit down and having a nice dinner. The food smells awesome during the whole trip and I almost wanted to grab it from the back seat and started eating. Best Sushi in town!!! Yeah maybe the only but still solid Sushi, only served Friday & Saturday evenings. If you like sushi, you can't go wrong...and he puts it on the buffet on those evenings as well and normally buffet sushi is terrible but Jimmy does it right. My husband and I decided to go to Hunan's today but we walked in and were seated and got up and walked out. We took one look around and decided that we really would like to eat in a clean environment. They had a piece of glass over a dirty tablecloth and food stuck on the glass and the floor was disgusting. It looked like Logan's where you throw your peanut shells on the floor except it wasn't peanut shells. Decided to stop in for dinner on Friday night - made my decision by the amount of cars in the lot - lots of cars = good food usually and that thought stands true with Hunan, We enjoyed an excellent buffet of hot, fresh and very tasty chinese dishes along with some excellent sushi - that took me by surprise. If you're ordering over the phone make sure you know what you're ordering. I ordered vegetable spring roll, it was small half the size of a regular spring roll. I also ordered shrimp curry. The curry tasted bland but they did put a lot of shrimp. Last order was shrimp chow mein. I didn't know what kind of shrimp chowmein it was but it wasn't noodles like what I was expecting. It was soupy shrimp with bean sprout. They did put a lot of shrimp in it but it wasn't tasty. The food I have ordered is tasty,the portions are good size. The counter service is sloppy in taking orders. The counter person mumbles and doesn't listen to your order. Has gotten it wrong two times in less than a week. Maybe I will just need to switch to another Chinese restaurant if this persists. read more

i havent tried much but its one of the few places ive seen in town that has lamb&lobster options on the menu plus they deliver i liked what i had i had the lamb sha cha i think it was but the real reason im writing this review is because of the other entree i had and it was to die for literally im a big fan of rice noodles i love the plucky feel they have the thinness of the noodle but id never had Singapore style rice noodles before ordering them from the"hunan Chinese restaurant" it sounded interesting i didnt know what to expect but im a risk taker of sorts ......and omg was it worth it there was a smokey curry thing going on that i really injoyed ive never had rice with such an intense and a vibrant collage of smokey spicy and sweet flavors they were really good noodles im even ordering more tonight! defiantly a must try if you are newly living in Alpena or visiting and are tired of the usual pizza/sandwich delivery's !....hell if wasn't soo cold during the winters and i had a car id go there in person! XD.... oh one other thing i highly respected when we had our food delivered it was by the owner him self !!! i thought that was the coolest thing i met the owner from just ordering take out it was awesome anyway great experience highly recommend!!! read more
