As a Thai chef, perhaps it is unfair that I review Asian restaurants. However, as a Yelp Elite, it's my credibility that permits an honest review based upon my experience. I feel the food is not next level or memorable. The spices are bland and watered down. We used to frequent for the buffet and although I had few complaints, the cost was far less than I paid for 2 entrees. I found the service not exceptional but after I started a conversation when the server was not busy, he lightened and we conversed about Thai/asian cuisine and where to shop for supplies. My sister eats just about anything with great joy so I also gauge her immense appetite and diversified acceptance when I review. I am sorry to say that neither of us could eat much. The rice was undercooked and the eggplant was as well. The soups lack the robust flavor the chef used to deliver. I like the ambiance and decor but I felt that if the food was better prepared, I would hear it and see the pleasure on guests faces. Please improve because I noted nothing that stands out and to me it was less enjoyable than a cheap Asian buffet. At least with that you know what you're getting but with a nice restaurant like this, I expect more. I used to come in all the time and everyone I know has changed their mind. Great service, greeted immediately and sat in a really cozy seat. Food was outstanding. First lets start with the egg drop soup. this was so flavorful and surprising. Next I got the egg roll which were fresh and crispy. Fried rice was flavorful and good. Now to the main dish (MASSAMAN) by far the best coconut curry dish I've ever had and I travel for a living. Worth the 35min drive to get here. Moreover their Thai Tea. Muahhh . Jay was my server and gave some great recommendations and I Took his word for everything I ordered. Supremely disappointed. The servers were very friendly and polite. But must have had a lot of work to do in the kitchen, where they would disappear for long periods of time. Maybe with customers at only two tables, they didn't want to sit and chat in front of us? Either way they neglected to do the basics. Like check on our progress or refill drinks. The cost to portion ratio is horrible. My Yelp search yielded only one other Asian food eatery in Gaylord and it's a buffet. That pretty much makes this a monopoly of sorts. There are no combination options, but the Thai entrées include rice and egg drop soup. No substitutions. The food quality was sub par. A couple of the entrées lacked flavour, as did the soup. Sadly, the rice was sticky and had that occasional crunch. You know that when possible, I make it a habit to give places two or three tries. Ah-Loy Bamboo was a delight. I am a foodie and Thai is one of my favorite cuisines to cook and eat. For our entrees, we got one of the Thai green curries and the A-Loy version of pad Thai. Both were delicious. The crab ragoons are some of the best I've ever eaten. I used to live in a big city with a plethora of highly rated restaurants within walking distance to choose from. I can confidently say that this restaurant isn't just good for Gaylord- it's good period. Our server was Jay. He was attentive and highly personable. Ohhhhhh myyyyyyyy GAWD! Their crab Rangoon is unlike any other crab Rangoon you will ever have. It is the best thing you will ever put in your mouth. Their egg drop soup which comes complementary with meals is also unlike any egg drop soup you will ever have. It is so good. It is not uncommon to see people picking the ball up and drinking it (myself included). Order the Phoenix chicken you will have dreams about it! I could go to this place every day! They have a very extensive menu, great service, and many vegetarian options. However, almost all of the food (soups included) contains MSG. For those of us who are intolerant of MSG they were not many options; just the lo mein and pad tai. For that reason I won't be back. read more

This is a very good restaurant. I would say that the food is very well. However if you are looking for traditional Chinese cuisine, you may not like it. The egg drop soup is a clear broth rather than an egg soup. The Pad Thai is delicious, however it is different than I am used to. The restaurant had a wonderful design and feels so peaceful!! My husband and I have gotten Ah-Lou Bamboo a few times now and we feel we're always happy with everything, but the main entrees and the service. The servers always seem upset for some reason. Been here once and from what I remember it was pretty good for being the only place in the area that has Asian food however it was not good enough for me to not drop the rating for the hours being wrong. It's one of the few places in northern Michigan with different food and the hours are wrong? What an easy fix. Sure I could've checked google too but I shouldn't need to cross check the hours. Generals Chicken arrived with overcooked rice, and what was clearly overcooked and processed chicken chunks that were like jerky, so tough. Extremely rude server, but the cook that had to fix my bill (server charged me for inedible food anyway), was even MORE rude. My sister was disgusted by their food. I was disgusted by them ARGUING about it. I should have just walked. I could not tell you enough to eat at McDonalds instead, the food is better, the service is better too. First of all, the service was excellent! Brianna took care of us and was very attentive. This was our first time and I was really happy about pretty much everything. My wife and I shared potstickers that were boiled and they were very good. We also got chicken satay and it had a peanut curry sauce which was excellent! I had the wonton soup, which was just OK. Just one wonton. My wife had the egg drop soup and said it was excellent. We both had chicken pad Thai, and aside from it having too many large onions for our taste, it was excellent. Plenty of chicken, and an excellent peanut sauce. My wife got mild, and I got medium. I thought the medium was a little bit hotter than medium but I might be simply a wimp when it comes to hot stuff. However, there is no public restroom. I had to walk down the block just to wash my hands. The food was only so-so. The spring rolls were somewhat soggy. The Thai noodles I ordered had far too much sauce and very little meat and vegetables. I asked for very hot spice, because that's how I roll, but received mild instead. We have been here before and the food was pretty good. Tonight we ordered carry out; the dining room is closed because of COVID. We ordered Chicken pad thai (medium heat), Szechuan beef, Kung Pao Chicken and Fried rice. First, the Pad Thai was dark brown and dry. It had no spice/heat at all. The peanuts were even soaked and soggy brown. The Kung Pao chicken and Szechuan beef both had an odd smell, were very watery and had very little meat. I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt due to COVID; I understand that is a challenge but it is a Friday night, there were three others in picking up carry out when I was, so they were busy enough, at least today, that it shouldn't have seemed like we had leftover food. read more

You moved to the main street location and your food changes flavor and portions? This used to be our go to Thai and Asian cuisine restaurant. 8 months ago in their old location, the food was spot on, now that they are in a new location the food suffered. We ordered Panang, drunken noodle, general's chicken and Labna. It was complete miss in every dish. The Panang does not taste like Panang Curry. The drunken noodle was just flat out noodle, where is the sauce? The General' s chicken was a complete miss. June 18 2018 who the he'll was in the kitchen cooking? OK the two stars are for the wait staff that are friendly and helpful. The other star is for the new location. It's well lit and nicely decorated. I've been wanting to try this place since I learned of it. We finally did last night and I was incredibly disappointed!! The service was great, but the food was the worst Chinese food I have ever had! Apparently, egg drop soup automatically comes with each meal, but I prefer wonton soup so I had to order that separately. It was TERRIBLE!!! It smelled and tasted quite fishy to me and I do not eat seafood. The server said it had no seafood in it, that it was pork with the edges died red for aesthetics. I couldn't eat it. The egg rolls were mediocre at best. The pot stickers were OK. Our meals, however, were also terrible. My husband ordered Mongolian beef which he said was flavorless and I ordered Szechwan chicken which is supposed to be spicey. It was very sweet and not even a little bit spicey. I only ate part of it because I was very hungry - I suffered through. We will NEVER go back and I do not recommend.
