Absolute TRASH. I don't like to write real negative reviews, but I've never been more sorely disappointed in Chinese food in my life. I LOVE Chinese food. Love love love. All of it, the best being food I ate while living in China, but I even appreciate the trashy, mostly fried, or syrupy Americanized stuff at the right moments too. I knew I was going to be getting the latter, but was still expecting proper execution and flavor. Especially for $70! If we'd eaten in, this might've been a two star review; if we could've gotten past the bad smell when you walk in. In all honesty, we probably would have turned around and left if we hadn't called the order in ahead of time for takeout. Let's start with the chinsy styrofoam containers that melted into the food, didn't keep it hot for the drive home AND allowed sauce to leak out all over everything else. So I had to waste ten minutes cleaning all that up before we could even dig into our dinner. Now, the food, for portion and quality, EVERYTHING was overpriced. Small Hot and sour soup.... Flavorless. Pu pu platter for two... everything was either dried out/overcooked or undercooked and mushy. How hard is it to get fry times right? Plus again, lacking almost all flavor. Dumplings... asked for them fried, not steamed (hoping for pan fried, but would've accepted deep fried) they were limp, mushy not quite steamed, and had barely touched the bottom of a frying pan. Not to mention they're clearly store bought frozen ones with no scallion or anything mixed into the flavorless mush in the middle. Can't tell you if they were chicken or pork, or goodness only knows what else. The accompanying sauce wasn't bad. House special fried rice... the most disappointing of all I think. A quart of overcooked mushy white rice with a few chunks of mystery meat and a couple peas and onions thrown in. NO flavor. Worst execution ever. House special pan fried lo mein... one styrofoam container of deep fried, dried out noodles which looked like a giant birds nest. I'm not sure they'd really been cooked before being fried. Much closer to a bag of crunchy chow mein noodles than lo mein. It was accompanied by a quart of soupy mushy veggies and proteins that still had almost NO FLAVOR, and it was impossible to eat them together. Or eat the noodles at all really. Hunan Duck.... About two or three Dried out/overcooked meat chunks that were strung together with an over abundance of (not crispy) skin with mushy broccoli swimming in what was left of the flavorless brown sauce that hadn't leaked out into the bag. I've never wanted to use soy sauce packets before in my life, nor not had them included in the bag. I felt ashamed eating any of this food; feel like crap after the little I did eat, and will probably cry when I throw the remaining $50 "worth" in the trash. read more

This place is a gem!! I mean this when I say it....THIS IS LITERALLY THE BEST CHINESE FOOD IVE EVER HAD.....If you are goin for ambiance ..This ain't is bucko!! But once you dig into that first bite of sesame chicken and rice..Buckle your seat belt Bucko!!! This was the second time we ordered to-go from Hunan. The first time the food was good and it's nice that they give Chinese donuts with the order. This time, however, as my girlfriend bit into her vegetable lo mein she found a bug. She obviously spit up her food and brushed and rinsed her mouth several times. She also lost her appetite. When we called Hunan to tell them the manager apologized and offered to remake it but that was obviously not an option. They should have offered to reimburse us for the inedible meal. We have been in Sanford for 3 years now and finally decided to try this place out. We are very glad we did, this is now our "GO TO"restaurant for Asian food! Wow, we were very impressed with the food and staff! Best Sweet and Sour chicken I have had in many many years! As our waitress pointed out, ensure to ask for your sweet and sour sauce on the side in a bowl. This kept the chicken fresh and crunchy throughout dinner. We just dipped in bowl as we ate. We ordered two family dinner combos which came with all the sides and delivered to the table separately with plenty of time to eat each item before entree's were served. All sides were A+. Tab was $36 for everything and we could not finish either meals. Tip to the Owner: The Restaurant phone is a bit loud in the otherwise very calming dining area. I used to love this place. It was the best place in town. It is extremely apparent that this restaurant has changed hands. The last time I went, about a month ago, I could tell the quality had gone down, but, I thought maybe it was a bad day. I went again today and will never go back. 1. The restaurant inside smelled. Almost like there was rotten food in the back 2. Ordered chicken wings that were overly greasy, not crisp, and cooked in old grease. 3. Combination fried rice, cooked in old grease, as well as the general tsos chicken. 4. Made my mother sick. I am writing this review for the safety of others eating there, and to save your money. $28.00 is too much to spend to have to throw the food in the garbage. read more

A friend and I sometimes meet up in Sanford (because it's halfway between our respective homes), and we had a craving for Chinese food. I visited Hunan Chinese Restaurant on the basis of some outdated Yelp and Google recommendations. My friend and I dined on a Saturday night, and there were only two other parties in the restaurant. The lighting was a bit dim, the decor a bit outdated in appearance (even in that timeless Chinese Restaurant aesthetic that we all know and love). Most of the patrons, and one of the servers, seemed to have the sniffles. There was no music playing in the background. The food came out quickly, and it was hot and savory. It tasted fine, though a bit salty. However, the overall experience was slightly off-putting. I wish that it had been worth the fifty minute drive. I'm going to look for other options the next time I visit Sanford! I might have to bypass Chinese restaurants in Sanford altogether, unless someone can offer a better suggestion! Thanks! read more

This used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant until the new owners took over. I've gone a couple of times wasn't impressed. Decided to pick up take out on my way home. Eggroll was swimming in grease. I literally poured it out of the bag. Fried dumplings were overdone and hard. I asked for the chili dipping sauce and cup a cup of oil with about a table spoon of peppers and it still had no taste. Rest of the food was just as bad. I won't be going back ever again. read more

My eldest son has been to this restaurant at least twice. I had told him to avoid this restaurant and one other one in Sanford, as both are so dirty. We had been working late, and he said he was starving and wanted Chinese food. He ordered the broccoli with General Chow chicken and tofu and vegetables. It came with fried rice and vegetables. This restaurant was 30 years ago really wonderful, but I am sorry to say it has deteriorated. I have no idea if the ownership has changed, but is it not good, and now I am so worried I am going to be sick! The tofu was silk tofu, which is not supposed to be in this dish. The few vegetables seemed old. The Styrofoam containers on the take-out were falling apart by the time we got home. I do not want to be mean, but this dinner was so bad! I should not have eaten any of it. I have learned it has a "B" rating on inspections, which is really too high. It should be a "C" -- no, an "F." I get the feeling this restaurant should be shut down. It feels as if the people running it do not care about quality or presentation- or cleanliness. It feels as if they do not care. Save your money. If you are working late and are starving, fast for the evening. Just go home and fix yourself a cup of herbal tea and forget about going out for Chinese food. This place was a really nice place 30 years ago. It needs to be completely re-done. It hurts me to write this, but it is really, really bad! Cleanliness of a restaurant is extremely important. I can excuse really bad food if the restaurant is at least very clean -- but this one is filthy and the food is old before it is prepared. I just told my son he is forbidden to ever, EVER go to the restaurant again. I strolled to another review and see a roach was cooked with the food. They posted a photo of it. We got carry-out for dinner and it was the best Chinese in town, hands down. The spring rolls were fresh and juicy. The egg drop soup was delicious. I had lo mein and the pork was perfect, plus tons of veggies and perfectly cooked noodles. They even threw in some kind of sugar donut dessert rolls. The worse chinese place I've ever in my entire life of living disgustong. I called them just to let them know that i did not like the food to see if they can replace what I ordered since I only tasted the meat and was immediately disgusted. They had the nerve to tell me that I can only choose 2 options of their choice or reorder another meal. Because I ordered through GRUBHUB I was unable to get a replacement. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! This place is so close to our home it is very convenient. The food is good and the service is "appreciative". I assume the staff are the owners. They recognize us and make us feel very welcome. The prices are a little high but we never leave hungry and always have lots to take home. The poo poo platter is fun but smells like gasoline. My kids love the orange chicken. I am a big fan of their General Tso's. We eat there often. read more

Very disappointed since the change in owners!!! Egg rolls are obviously Not homemade but Frozen and much much smaller in size!! They taste like mush. Got Beef fried rice and instead of fried... Was in Sanford visiting relatives. I wanted good Chinese (something I've missed since leaving NY) and I was nervous pulling into the parking lot. No cars (it was early) and the decor when we walked in was a real throw back to the old Chinese restaurants that I'd eaten in growing up. Loved the fancy ceiling decor. The food was fantastic. I was shocked. Best Chinese I've had outside of NYC, hands down. My family members have eaten there about 30 times (why they never took me there before still stuns me) and they said that they've never had a bad meal there. I had the Shrimp and Lobster sauce (yum) with steamed white rice- a little dry, which surprised me since it was 5:30, early. We also had the Rangoon appetizer, Shrimp Lo Mein, Sweet and Sour Chicken. Basic meals that were all great. The server was very kind and patient to my daughter who was having a difficult time choosing a meal. IF you're looking for a high end, NYC Shun Li's type of decor you wont find it here....but you'll miss out on the great food and service, which is why I go out to eat. read more
