So its Christmas day and there are not .any choices. We yelped near our hotel and this Chinese place came up. It had 3.5 stars so beggars cant be choosers. If you have a choice keep going. Pork fried rice minus the pork, pork egg foo young minus the pork and lastly pork lo mein without...you guessed it pork. Noodles and a few veggies counted three strips of little pork. Sad. Add insult to injury it was tasteless. We had to drown it in soy sauce. The sweet and sour chicken was a massive doughy ball with a small tiny piece of chicken. That folks is a talent. We put in a large order and the lady asked ,how many plates? I said 8. She said astonished eight? Um there are eight of us? Would you like us to share plates so you can save a few pennies? Ordered general tso and veg lo mein. The general tso was 75% batter/fluff and 25% chicken. Terrible. Ordered white meat more expensive thinking it would be better quality. Sadly we threw out half of it. Some of the pieces weren't cooked properly as ypu could see pink in the meat once it separated from the batter. The veg lo mein was nothing to write home about. This is a take-out place. Don't expect to eat in unless you want to eat at a chair. Hence, "Express." Food was good, but not as spicy as we had requested. Order was ready in 10 minutes. Servings were large (2-3 meals per dish) and plenty of meat/shrimp in each. A lot of Chinese take-out places give you 3-4 shrimp in one order, not Hunan Express. It's your basic cheap carry out Chinese joint. Nothing to go out of your way to try in my opinion. We've gotten take out here a bunch of times because it's convenient. The shrimp fried rice is pretty good. It's huge and they don't skimp on the shrimp, but it's pretty greasy. If you are looking for fast order and cheap food, you should try this place. That's exactly what I did. A couple of my friends wanted to enjoy the nice weather for lunch, so they decided to have a picnic at Fort McHenry. Unfortunately, we were responsible for our own meal, so I just drove into a random plaza which I thought would have a fast food joint, but found this Chinese take-out place instead. You will spend $5-$7 for a meal that will guarantee your hunger will be gone by the time you finish it. If you spend more, you are doing something wrong. The food was as good as you make out of it. Schezuan beef was wonderful. Lots of shredded carrots balanced with quality beef and flavor. Hunan chicken is great too. Lots of aldente broccoli, carrots and mushrooms. I ordered the dinner size Hunan beef and ate it 3 days in a row for lunch. Can't beat it! You can order the sauce on the side if you're trying to be healthy but I find that if I specify little oil, the dish is more complete and tastes better. Enjoy! I would never return again! I ordered beef and broccoli and it was basically a dish of broccoli. The beef that was in it ...was nasty and I'm not really sure that it was beef. I called and they said that they gave me a larger container and that's why there was so much broccoli. It's funny because it was a same size container as my other dish I ordered. This was some of the worst chinese food Ive had in a while. Elkridge must be oblivious to good chinese food because the reviews led me to believe that this is some of the best. Ordered hunan shrimp lunch special. The rice is so bland and dry I couldnt continue eating it. Found 1 pea and 1 carrot in the entire rice. The shrimp were all different sizes. Some were tiny while the biggest were small at best and they did not have a fresh taste. Like they were frozen for too long. Its a shame when the store is right next to a supermarket.The flavor of this dish was so lacking. The sauce tastes like corn syrup with red pepper flakes. The egg roll was mushy. They need to rethink putting the egg roll in the lunch container. It would also help if they specified the egg roll has meat in it. Not a pleasant surprise. Its really sad when the only thing you want to eat is the broccoli. Oh and the lady at the front counter was stingy with the sauces. Seems like this place is trying to cut costs everywhere. Hunan Express is my go-to for Chinese carryout. It is conveniently located by the Giant. I probably should begin by saying that I am a picky Chinese food eater. In fact, I usually don't crave Chinese food, but their chicken lo mein may be the best I've had. I even order the Pad Thai here (gasp!) and it's not bad. We've been buying primarily lunch specials from Hunan Express for many years. I think there may have been a few management changes along the way, but the flavor and quality is great. It is a farther away than another Chinese restaurant, and is worth the drive. We like the value of the lunch specials ($5.75-$6.50) because they come with egg-rolls and wings, but the dinners ($8.75 for poultry dinners) are also a very fair price. The meat is never fatty or grizzly, but rather tender and fresh. They are good with special orders (e.g. brown sauce in moo goo gai pan, etc.) I really like their egg drop soup too, and my husband likes their hot and sours soup. Many a Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm we pick up a few lunch specials and that carries us through the activities or chores of the day :) Also, for parties I sometimes buy a big tray of egg-rolls and spring rolls ($1 each) which they cut in half and place in a metal tray, with the sauces - perfect for a pot luck or holiday party. read more
