Some nights are Chinese delivery kinda nights. They don't happen often for me, but when I am too bombarded with life happenings, it is always the right answer. This was my first time ordering from Hunan Family and the cravings were definitely satisfied. The beef lo mein was standard in a good way (generous portion too) and the general tso's was made extra spicy like I asked for. Was pleasantly surprised at the 'small' order because it was enough for me for two days. I ordered through a third party delivery service and it was received, made quickly and in my hands 20-25 minutes later, piping hot. Satisfied customer here! read more

I'll start by saying the food was not terrible...it definitely was not anything close to great but the 2 stars is not in regards to the food while it doesn't really help it much. We came here for dinner one night because my boyfriend is always getting deliveries from there so we wanted to try it out. When I called, they answered the phone simply saying, Wait (nothing else)...then he came back and said what do you want? I was immediately turned off but I still ordered. He gave me a time of 15 minutes and then hung up. When I walked in, rather than giving him my name or phone number I had to restate my order for him to grab it. I ordered the shrimp egg foo young dinner, small egg drop soup, bourbon chicken and the house special Ho Fun. Ho Fun is generally one of my favorite dishes as I really love the wide flat rice noodles but here they were all stuck together, half of the noodles didn't even have any sauce on them they were so thickly stuck together. There was not much of any of the proteins inside either.. The egg foo young had a burnt taste, that made it hard to eat even though I couldn't find anything burnt. It must of been from old oil or something. The egg drop soup was disappointing and the bourbon chicken while good was kind of hard. Overall, I definitely would not be back here for Chinese. I really hope we will find a good Chinese restaurant soon! They were so much easier to come across in Rhode Island. read more

Have ordered from here 3-4 times in the last year. Food is consistent and delivery speed has gotten really fast. My only complaint is when placing an order on their website, you cant use the coupons on their site. There is no code to type in and even though I ask for it in the instructions of the order, they never honor the request. I agree with another person's review post, the customer service at Hunan Family in Columbia, MD is horrible! I called to place my order in advance - the woman who took my order was rude but not so young. You would think she'd know better. Wrong! She was rude on the phone and sharp in her tone in person. The food was not seasoned well - I ordered chicken and veggies...chicken tasted like rubber. The string beans tasted old. It was a terrible experience for me. Disclaimer: This review is based off of the one thing I've had: General Tso's chicken lunch special. The eggroll that comes with the lunch special is a beef eggroll (I'm always curious about this, because most places have shrimp or vegetable eggrolls and they typically give you the latter for a combo special). There wasn't a ton of beef in there, but it wasn't bad. The General Tso's chicken was pretty good. I have no real complaints about the meal, which to me says a lot due to the sketchy results for Chinese take-out in Columbia. The price was fair and I didn't catch any flack for charging my meal which was under the typical $10 minimum for credit cards. Tip: If you're picking up your food, I'd park in the back and walk around the side of the building, since they're located on the far end of the row of stores from the main parking lot. I could only spot the general vicinity of the store, because I knew they were located next to the UPS store. There should probably be better signage here (unless you're ordering delivery). I want to also note that I appreciate the owner taking so many photos of their food for Yelp. Doing this may help some of us order more things we may be afraid to try. I always wish there were pictures for some of these "mystery dishes" on the menu, so thank you for doing that. What would also be nice is a "if you like this, try that" sort of suggestion. The food here is mediocre at best. The egg drop soup was light on the eggs, salty, and did not come with those crisps it should be served with. I got the broccoli in spicy ginger sauce and requested they go light on the sauce. If that was light on the sauce I'd hate to see the amount of sauce they normally put in there because the broccoli was swimming in sauce. The general tso chicken was more bread than chicken. The only dish I have nothing negative to say about was the combination rice. That was pretty good. All in all I will not be ordering from them again. read more

I tried to eat the General T chicken and it wasn't fresh, thought maybe I was imagining that I was just not that hungry so i put it away for the next day and when I reheated it it was even worse. I am not a food snob nor do I write bad reviews but when I stopped in today to tell the owner well lets just say I won't be coming back. I must say, I'm very surprised that I have to agree with the general sentiment of other reviewers here regarding customer service. I was somewhat hungry (not really) but just wanted to support local businesses during this time we are having. So I placed an online order from my community courtyard and waited about 10 minutes and walked over to pay and pick it up. When I walk in, there's this young I'll-tempered man working the order window. When I tell him my name, he immediately raises his voice to let me know I need to tell him the contents of my order, not just my name. As that caught me off guard, I respond to him letting him know there's no need for rudeness and as a paying customer I will not be spoken to like that. Then much to my surprise, he aggressed me as a means of poorly attempted intimidation as if he wants to fight me??! Needless to say, I'm not intimidated easily especially by some hot headed kid who barely knows how to read. Then the older lady who runs the business comes out and attempts to remediate the situation and pushes him back and says he won't be working there anymore as he'll be fired while apologizing profusely (interesting). I didn't take that too seriously, but as an appeasement to her great efforts to mitigate and recover the situation I proceeded to announce my order so I could pay and leave with it. However, it turned out the order wasn't ready and they'd need to begin its preparation. After what happened, I was certainly not trusting of my food being prepared if not already done so. I simply canceled the order and won't be supporting this business again. In addition to this, I will pursue my due diligence and address this in a higher level. Poor customer service is one thing, but when a representative of this business tries to get physical, things go a different direction. A regular Chinese family restaurant where the bulk of their orders are deliveries and takeouts. I tried this place 2 times, the first time was ok. I ordered the mai fun noodles with roasted pork, crispy beef, and sesame chicken I believe. This was okay, but the mai fun noodles were extremely salty, to the point it was a bit hard to eat, especially so for those who have to control their salt intake for medical reasons. The second time, I ordered a hunan pork with fried rice and a broccoli and beef with fried rice. I called them to ask about it and a young guy answered. I asked about the order, and he says: 1. he didn't hear the fried rice 2. He didn't charge for the fried rice 3. He hangs up immediately without waiting for me to speak. It doesn't matter if he forgot or didn't hear the fried rice. I was in a pretty good mood and didn't mind making the drive for it again, even though normally that's enough to give a bad impression. Also, I don't care about the price, because 2 orders of fried rice would only cost $4. Usually you'd at least hear a sorry, and not just completely shut the customer out during a conversation and hang up immediately after without letting them speak. It doesn't matter how good a restaurant is, if their service is terrible, then they aren't worth the time. read more

We have been ordering from Hunan Family for years and truly love this place. We have ordered just about everything on the menu and it is all delicious. I love their house special wonton soup and order it weekly, my husbands favorite is their crispy beef, yum! My son gobbles down 2 orders of their pan fried dumplings at a time. They have grill items that are fantastic when you want something on the lighter side.They know our "usual" orders, deliver quickly (although we live across the street, dont judge! Lol!) And have always been great with special requests. To those saying she was rude on the phone, I would say that she is very fast and efficient, the abruptness is a cultural thing. I have never interpreted that as rudeness, but can see how it could be construed that way. My only ding would be the egg roll, it is a bit salty for my taste. read more

My co-worker and I have ordered lunch from here multiple times. In the beginning, the food was decent. But the more and more we order, the more disappointing it gets. We usually always order a lunch special. We've had... Shrimp & Broccoli Chicken & Mixed Vegetables Beef & Mixed Vegetables Tofu & Vegetables Steamed Dumplings The lunch specials run about $7. And they all come with fried rice and an egg roll. The give you more rice than anything. There is barely enough vegetables and meat in all the options we've had. The egg roll is decent, but one time it tasted old and foul. So we had to throw it out. The food is overall bland, and not that great. And it gets more and more bland each time. Service is good. Just moved here from NJ and decided to order take out from here tonight. We ordered $61 worth of food and I feel as though it was a waste of money. The shrimp fried rice smelled very fishy which I know means it is going bad and the fishy smell is the ammonia being released from the food going bad. The pork fried rice smelled terrible as well as if it was not pork or it was going bad as well. The broccoli was tasty and the chicken was ok. Very disappointed we did not get to enjoy such expensive food we will look else where next time. read more

At 6:40pm I placed an order online. Since we live outside of the delivery area, my husband picked up the order and returned home. When we opened the bag, we found that the noodles in the pan fried noodle order were missing. I called the restaurant at 7:47 pm to find out where they were and was advised by the rude lady who answered the phone that they were there. I requested a full credit for the order of pan fried noodles, but was advised by the lady that the soup was the most important of the order and that instead of giving me full credit for the order, they would give me a $5.00 credit towards my next order. I advised the lady that the tip I added to a pickup order was less than that, and that I expected a full credit for the order since it was their error. The lady advised me that I would Irecieve a $5.00 credit again, I advised her that I was returning to the restaurant with the entire order and that it would all need to be remade since it was already cold and congealing or would expect a full refund on the entire order. When I arrived at the restaurant 8:20pm with the entire order, I was met at the window by the rude lady who offered to give me only the missing pan fried noodles. By this time, two hours into this, the food was cold and not digestible. I advised the lady that I wanted a refund on the entire order and presented it to her, untouched. She advised me that I couldn't get a refund on an online order. She was also very rude when I told her I wasn't taking any of the order as it was now pretty unappetizing at that time. I left the restaurant versus getting into a physical fight with her, with receipt. I am disputing the charge and will never return to this place. The food on a good day is only good for about 45 minutes to an hour. Once it gets cold, reheating it makes it taste really bad. read more

So I'm going to start by saying the first review of Hunan Family is riddled with spelling errors and is their only review. So my confidence in the review is very low. Which is good, because this place is great. They have dinner combos, which many places around here don't have. It makes two meals easily. My wife and I got The General and Orange Chicken combos with pork fried rice with an order of egg rolls. Everything was great and fresh. The chicken was all moist and seemingly dark near which is so much better than white meat. And I know it's a silly thing, but they gave a reasonable amount of sauces so I didn't have 1000 packets leftover. On the not silly side, the family that runs it was very nice and welcoming. We enjoyed it and will definitely frequent it more often. read more

Quality has seriously deteriorated here as food is old dry and meat similar to jerky. Spend $70 and family cannot eat it. They do not honor coupons from their website and moo shu comes with 1/4 of pancakes needed for their order. When I asked for more pancakes, they said they are $3 extra.
