Sautéed Shredded Beef with Wild Pepper Bò xào tiêu rừng
    Robert L.

Oh wow! You know when you crave something and the place just nails it? Well today was such a day! This was my first time ordering from Hunan (based on a Doordash "customer favourite" rating) and they delivered EXACTLY what i had in mind with their "sauteed shredded beef with wild pepper". First, i was impressed with the spice level (and i didnt even ask for extra spicy). Secondly, the quality of the meat was great! I was afraid it might be that fat, chewy stuff you often get but nope, it was clean and tender. The portion was also big enough to have leftovers. I will definitely have that again!

I had a completely magical experience here. The food was AMAZING. Hunan Restaurant has the perfect authentic Chinese food, so flavorful and just ravishing. The flavors of the food are absolutely delicious, unforgettable even. The experience and atmosphere of the place is exceptional as well. This is probably the best Chinese restaurant in all of Toronto. Absolutely recommend.

Authentic Chinese restaurant surrounded by fast food. I had the smoked pork belly with bamboo. The port was very smokey and pretty lean for pork belly. I ordered medium spice and it was quite spicy, so be careful what you ask for. Nice size portion. Felt very authentic, not your typical fast Chinese.

I visited Hunan restaurant on Saturday morning opening time. Staff were so friendly and the service was really quick. Inside of the restaurant was super clean and well decorated. The food was reasonably priced and the portion was good too! Taste was very satisfying. My friend said thank you for bringing me here like three times haha. I'll probably will be back for their braised beef and tendon noodles!

Lee is the one restaurant I look forward to every Summerlicious…read more One reason is that every year they create a completely new menu instead of reusing dishes from their regular menu. As an Asian fusion restaurant, I always come curious to see what new ideas the chef has come up with. The last two Summerlicious menus disappointed me a little--they felt a bit uninspired, with dishes like the vegetable curry and croquette. This year, however, the creativity is back, and I'd happily recommend Lee's Summerlicious menu again. Fried Wild Cod The crispy cod is served in an edible crispy rice basket, making it feel like sharing bread at the start of the meal. The fish is fried perfectly with a crisp exterior and moist, flaky interior. Paired with Thai sweet chili sauce, it's light, flavorful, and great for sharing. Gazpacho Picante A refreshing take on gazpacho. The avocado gives it a smoother texture, while the hint of spice adds another layer without overpowering the chilled tomato soup. Refreshing and a great appetizer. BBQ Jerk Pork Ribs Three generous ribs--almost a main course on their own. The meat is tender while still retaining a bit of bite, similar to the texture of slow-cooked jerk chicken. The jerk seasoning is excellent, coating every bite with rich, aromatic spices. Pan Roasted Salmon The salmon is beautifully cooked with a nicely caramelized exterior while remaining juicy inside. Each accompaniment brings something different: the olive tapenade is deeply savory, the parsnip purée is smooth and slightly sweet, the lima bean adds a creamy, nutty richness, and the lemon-tomato-pepper vinaigrette brightens everything with acidity and a gentle kick. Lima Bean Succotash Probably the prettiest dish on the menu--and also the most unusual. The lima beans and peas are cooked until tender without becoming mushy. The flavors are layered, but there's a subtle bitterness throughout. After asking the chef, we learned it's the natural flavor of lima beans and was intentionally preserved as part of the dish. Fried Organic Chicken The fried chicken is juicy and tender, reminding me of Japanese karaage. It comes with two fun sauces: one is rich and spicy with a hint of coconut, while the other is a sweet pineapple-lime mayo that pairs surprisingly well with the chicken. The pandan rice, however, was fairly ordinary. The desserts are still classic Lee--beautifully plated, but the flavors are more restrained. We tried the Rhubarb Almond Frangipane Tart, Lemon Mousse Panna Cotta (our favorite), and Strawberry Raspberry Monkey Bread. This year's Summerlicious reminded me why I fell in love with Lee in the first place.

After trying it I completely understood, this was the BEST salad of my life! All 26 ingredients worked together perfectly to make a delicious, tangy, crunchy salad unlike anything i've had before. I also highly recommend the wine paring they suggest having with the salad :) Everything else on the menu was done really well. The cheeseburger spring roll was quite unique, Indo think there could've been more texturally inside the actual spring roll, it was all mush in there. Very nice ambiance, service were very attentive, I had a great time and will be back to try more items :)

Notable sides of fried watermelon or a truffle fried rice intrigued the palate with familiar flavors, while delivering them with novel textures, temperatures, and plating. Each item you could tell was intensely worked on and every technique was executed to perfection. I never felt so cared for in a meal! While I often find the tasting menu at these types of restaurants don't provide enough food for the price, this restaurant was the exception. The meal was filling and balanced, and I left feeling it was money well spent. I strongly recommend getting the fixed menu. My only critique of the restaurant was the indoor seating area seemed a bit stuffy and had an old-building odor to it, which we ended up avoiding by sitting outside. Might be something to keep in mind.

Every review I read about the place raved about the flavors so I came in with high expectations. We ordered 5 dishes and although there were a variety of textures and layers to each dish, everything seemed to have the same flavour or garnish. After a while everything started to taste very similar to the dish brought out just before. Crispy garlic and chili oil seemed to be the lingering taste in each dish. The only item that didnt contain these were the tacos which werent anything special. The tofu dish wasthe most enjoyable for me but again was topped with a lot of that chili oil that took over after a while. Truffe fried rice had a beautiful aroma but the truffe flavor wasnt as strong. Just missed the mark with me on this one but truly had high hopes for it. Great ambiance. Friendly service. Two levels. Bar seating available as well.

With prices of an upscale dining restaurant, the service didn't feel like it matched up; it was fairly mediocre. Food was a bit of a hit or miss for us too.. Shrimp toast: fun, good texture, could taste the oiliness stronger than I expected. Paired well with the emulsion. Fun guo: super tasty, quite greasy though. I typically don't order fun guo but the texture was a delight to eat. Pork & crab siu mai: this felt like it lacked identity, not really sure I saw the vision. It just felt like curry on a siu mai lol Iberico cha siu: beautiful cut, perfectly tender, good savouriness, no complaints. R&D fried rice: my biggest letdown. Maybe my expectations were set to high. For a house special, I would expect a solid crowd-pleaser. Having each bite feeling mostly like 'crunch' is not what I think of as fried rice nor a favourite for most people. My ideal fried rice focuses on the grains of rice, with substantial bite and flavour in each spoonful. The flavour was most definitely there, don't get me wrong but it was extremely hard to eat more than a bowl. The redeeming qualities were in the flavour and cute little mushroom garden concept. If they had maybe 2x the amount of rice for the ratio of toppings and crunch, I would say this is a delicious and near perfect fried rice. Not bad, but a hefty price tag for a meal that I had really high hopes for.

There was just one aspect that I found really annoying with these guys. It wasn't that they charged $20-30 per entree, no... because if other cuisines and restaurants can get away with that price point, there's no reason why Caribbean can't be elevated enough to as well. It's that they charged $5 for the most piddling amount of ox tail gravy.. the nickel and diming felt greedy and left me with a bad taste. I've already paid $20-30, don't charge me $5 for 2 tbsp of gravy. I wouldn't go back, but if you want to have a slightly elevated Caribbean experience and just vibe, it's not a bad option.
