The good, the bad, and the meh. We tried this restaurant on October 25th, ordering a carryout dinner through their website which was attractive and easy to use. That part of the experience was good! The pickup at the store was good, too! Ready on time. But then came the food. Receipt from Hunan Royale #1116-5521 Sesame Shrimp; Shrimp Egg Roll (For Two); Roast Pork Egg Roll (For Two); Fried Dumplings (8); Wonton Soup; General Tso Chicken; + Tip = $53.30 (We planned for leftovers) Though we ordered 4 total egg rolls (trying the 2 types offered) we weren't given any kind of sauce to go with them. No hot mustard, no duck sauce, nada. Also, the crunchy noodles that came with the wonton soup were stale, dry, & cheap. The entrees themselves were just Meh. Paid extra for fried rice but didn't get it. Also didn't get the pint of white rice expected with the main entree. All in all the food was tepid, kind of bland, and disappointing. We tried Hunan Royale for the first time and ordered 2 meals that were quite fresh and tasty. My Szechuan shrimp was quite bountiful. A very wide menu with lots of choices. Doesn't use MSG. Young man at the counter was polite and helpful. We will try it again next week for a get together with friends. We have missed a good Chinese restaurant since we moved here from Connecticut but this one seems like a good option. One can eat in the restaurant but we opted for take out. read more

I don't write reviews but this was so bad I had let people know. worst food I've had. I had the chicken chow mein, a staple, was so watery because the vegetables were obviously steamed and not sautéed and had no flavor and very little chicken. Not good. My order was 3 entrees plus soup and egg rolls. Entrees, 1 was ordered hot/spicy, but all 3 came spicy. For most in my family, the "2 no-spicy" entrees were too hot to eat both first and second day, one person threw up after trying a "non-spicy" garlic sauce entree. Next, the one family person ready to eat spicy any time, had the "runs", after eating on the second day, which is moderately unpleasant when it happens. No kidding. These experiences do not happen with a good Chinese restaurant The kitchen staff and management seem to have turned over to a new kitchen crew, which might be incompetent, if cooking the same entrees in the same wok with hot spices. Try this on your risk. There are other Chinese restaurants on Rt 26 towards Bethany and on Rt 1. More effort for me, but I won't be going back to Hunan Royale. We order carryout at least once a month. We've always received sauce packets with our egg rolls, so I think the previous reviewer's experience of no sauce packets was an anomaly. Some of our favorites include orange chicken, beef and broccoli, sesame shrimp, lo mein and soup. Orders have been consistently correct, ready on time and delicious. read more

My husband and I were visiting my parents and craving Chinese food, and my dad recommended Hunan Royale as their usual choice. I was initially scared by the current reviews, but took his word for it that the basics were decent. We live in Baltimore, where good Chinese food is hard to come by, but we know bad Chinese food when we see it! We called in our order because the website was unclear with some selections - Without no vegetables? What's going to happen? - which took no time at all. It was ready on time and survived the five minute drive home. While the hot and sour soup wasn't as tangy as I like it, it did have subtle tartness and lots of veggies - a happy surprise! We added some crushed red pepper and that honestly really helped. We chose white meat general tso's chicken and Mongolian beef (both requesting spicy) as our entrees. The Mongolian beef had lots of really yummy onions, but I wished there were more peppers. The beef was not slimy - thank goodness - but did seem a little thin. Would've preferred more meatiness. The general tso's sauce was not spicy at all, which was disappointing. It also could definitely have been crispier - however, the overall texture was fine. The long and short of it is, we're at the beach. It's totally edible Chinese food. My only recommendation is to travel with red pepper flakes so you're prepared! read more

There are probably better alternatives around the area, but there are few dishes which are reliable. You will simply need to sample your favorites and decide if you like it or prefer another restaurant nearby. This being one of the closer chinese restaurants to our beach home, we order from Hunan Royale when we have a craving for asian food and do not feel like driving further out. read more

Grading on a curve, considering the regional availability & overall quality: If this place were somewhere like NY or San Fran it wouldn't be notable at all. But, at the Delmarva shore...This place is pretty good. Fresh ingredients, consistent, very good lo mein made with wok hei, good dumplings and decent general tso's. So, covers all the basics quiet nicely except for the hot and sour which is neither hot nor sour -- then again it seems good hot and sour doesn't exist in this area for whatever unknown reason. We ordered a cashew chicken, (with no cashews, as I like the brown sauce usually good) and a chicken fried rice along w two eggrolls.... We paid for it and went to Giant. 30 min later we went back and were told that he was waiting for the eggrolls... We went back to the car and waited. After another 5-10 minutes I sent my son in and he came out w a bag... We drove back to where we are staying in Bethany Beach and tried to have dinner.... No eggrolls, the chicken fried rice was just white rice w veggies and some chicken. No cooked or fried rice, soft white rice and tasteless..... My chicken w cashew has carrots, celery and onions....None of the veggies had been cooked more than 2 minutes so they were all hard.... I called and he said that he would fix it if we came back. I told him we were 30 min away.... I asked him if they knew what they were doing and he said yes... I asked him to credit me back for the eggrolls that we didn't receive and he asked someone and came back and sd he couldn't... I told him that I would write the review they deserved.... On top of everything else, bland food, missing items, the portions were skimpy even tho we ordered the larger, dinner size.... Very poor quality meat being used in the Beef and Broccoli. I had to feed it to my dog. My son ordered the Sesame Chicken and said it wasn't Chicken meat ....maybe a rib meat of some kind. It was my first and last time. I don't know if the pandemic made them buy poor meat quality or has always been. The Dumplings were ok. I honestly will buy PF Changs frozen meals at Giant rather than spend $30 on poor quality food. It is a shame cause they have a prime location and the staff is personable. We love Chinese and have had it often but not in Delaware. Praying the other Chinese places are better. We had high hopes from the Google reviews...very sad. read more

This is an old school Chinese takeout which has a fairly broad menu. Coming from a major metro market like Philadelphia or Baltimore, it's a bit of an adjustment. That said, the selection of dishes is more than adequate. It's probably been forever since you ordered Egg Foo Young, right? Try the house special or shrimp and you'll enjoy the variety of tastes nestled in a steamy egg base, served with a side of gravy. It's worth the $10 price by a long shot. What else is good? Great wontons in the wonton soup, Szechuan Bean Curd, Moo Goo Gai Pan and Moo Shu Pork to name a few. Just think of this as a classic comfort food takeout choice in the heart of Millville. Hunan Royale is one of only a few Chinese-style restaurants in the area. As many other reviews have stated, it is not gourmet food but it is better than you might expect. The prices are decent, the service could have been a little faster, and the menu has a good amount of choices. I enjoyed the General Tso's Chicken, the lo mein, and the fried rice. I had their Orange Beef which I was happily surprised to see was more towards the authentic recipe then the Americanized version. Others in my group were happy with their food too. Sorry but everytime I order food from this Chinese take out...I'm hoping the previous dishes were some how a fluke. Just a bad day for the cooks and the hostess/order taker. The FF is always sticky and soggy. The shrimp is piled up on top and nothing but sticky rice and maybe if you're lucky, some veggies. The lo mein, soggy. The Singapore mei fun, twice they forgot to add the curry. Pretty much every dish I've ordered from there either came out wrong or just plain horrible. The order taker/host/owner...rude as can be. Nasty egg rolls and over priced, and the quality has gone downhill and there are simply better alternatives at the giant next door

We went to Hunan Royale for lunch two days in a row it was so good! We had the lunch special each day - Chicken with Cashews, 2 Hot and Sour soups, Chicken with Broccoli, we opted for white rice with both lunch specials. Both dishes were well cooked, tasty and light with little oil. The soup was savory and included fresh toppings. The next day we tried the lunch specials again, this time the General Tso's and Kung Pao Chicken, one with fried rice this time. Again, very good food, however I think to make the General Tso's tastier they used a fair amount of MSG. The other dishes didn't seem to use it. All the lunch specials are $5.95 for entree, white or pork fried rice, and your choice of soup or egg roll - a great deal. The tables there were nice to sit even though we took ours out. The staff was very nice and I think this is a great addition to the beach area - provides a great alternative to fries and pizza for lunch! Also, open to 10 pm, they are open later than most other options. read more

The food here is actually quite good. For those of us that come from more urban areas where good Chinese food is easy to find, it is easy to be critical but I have found this food to be a good beach substitute. It is mostly a take out place although you can eat in. The chicken w broccoli was well prepared, seasoned, and steaming hot. The pork dumplings were as good as home. The parents and their children only speak mandarin Chinese in the restaurant between themselves which I take as a good sign. read more

I'm not sure why this place gets such negative reviews. It's a very good takeout Chinese restaurant. I'm not sure if other reviewers were maybe expecting something other than typical Chinese takeout? We had Hunan chicken which had good flavor, was prepared well and was better than the Chinese takeout we get at home. It surpassed my expectations, especially in light of the prior reviews. The people here (especially the woman) are extremely rude. They continuously got our order wrong then wanted us to pay extra for what THEY got wrong. The food was definitely not worth the hassle either. We left with a headache & bad taste in our mouths. I absolutely do not recommend. This was very weak Chinese food. Everything was mediocre. Luckily it was inexpensive so it didn't feel like a total waste. Stick to dishes that are hard to mess up (chicken fried rice, beef lo mein). Ok, not really awesome Chinese here at the beach. We tried all three in Bethany and found Hunan really the best of the iffy. Tonight we have to say our take out was truly awesome. I had a yen (lol) for shrimp in lobster sauce and decided for $7.50 a pint worth a shot. Omg. Big fresh shrimp, yes there was that tsurimi masquerading as lobster but with a sprinkle of soy this was really good. Twice cooked pork, all veggies clearly fresh, string beans, peppers, snow peas, carrots etc and nicely spicy, plus Singapore noodles that were more than adequate. read more
