Not many Asian food options in the area compared to Northern VA. We were spending the weekend at the beach with family and everyone was craving some Chinese food. We decided to give this place a try because hey, it is number 1 right? Haha. We ordered a whole bunch of dishes. And you know what? They were all good!! Food was fresh and delicious! The owners were nice and gave cardboard boxes to help carry out all of our orders. You don't go here for the decor or anything but go here for some good takeout that is reasonably priced (compared to all the expensive overpriced options in the area). Just plain BAD. I ordered the "lobster" LoMein and when I got home I discovered it was actually crawfish with a mix of soggy imitation "Krab stick" which was awful tasting. I called them thinking they must have given me the wrong dish because there is no mention of imitation crab let alone crawfish on the menu , the women who answered told me "oh no that's right, we don't put lobster in the lobster noodles just crawfish" (still no mention of the fake crab). Not only is this intentional deception but also VERY UNSAFE!!! Shellfish allergies are very real and yes you can be allergic to crawfish and not lobster! So I asked them to refund me since not only is it NOT WHAT I ORDED or did they tell me about the bullshit switch-a-roo when I order it... and they told me I had to drive back and give the dish to them before they would replace it!!!! FFFFF THAT!!! You intentionally deceived me then admitted it then want to make me drive back for a refund!!?? Then when I drove back to get the refund the rude girl behind the counter tried to tell me "crawfish, lobster same thing"! Wtf!? My first order from No. 1 was the spring roll appetizer and the Hunan Bean Curd. The meals at No. 1 are a great value: ample portions at a frugal price. I enjoyed the spring rolls. The wrapper was a little bit on the thicker side (less crispy) but the vegetables inside (mostly cabbage) were simple and tasty enough. --Not my favorite spring rolls ever, but not bad at all. The Hunan Bean Curd contained a generous portion of fresh vegetables and tofu, nicely done. The sauce however was a bit of a disappointment. I need to update my original review because I don't think I did this place justice the first time around. I've been here dozens of times and the main thing is consistency -- I've never had a bad meal. Nothing is ever soggy or old or poorly cooked. My favorites are still the general tso chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and beef lo mein, and I cycle through the combination plates or lunch specials of the chicken meals regularly. The food is always ready in fifteen minutes and I think the people who work there know me by now because half the time they're holding my bag already before I even get to the counter to tell them what I ordered over the phone. Amazing flavor and all in all surprisingly good for Chinese, let alone Beach Chinese. The ONLY complaint is this ridiculous dish of Mongolian Beef. The shrimp were still cold inside it was very dry.. no flavor! and The vegetables seemed like they were chopped uniformly very small like you bit in a frozen bag. Definitely not fresh vegetables. I ate in informed the "chefs" of my displeasure, and got no response. Had to throw my food away. When I posted another online review, the response was that you had to ask for egg in your fried rice... Who doesn't put egg in their fried rice ?? also had to ask for a napkin, and there was no lemon for my iced tea. My sister's chicken fried rice was also not up to par. I suggest you stick to other options This isn't really an eat in place but the flow of take out was steady. EAT IN EXPERIENCE: Sticky tables can be a sign of a good restaurant. This is more of a take out restaurant and they seemed surprised we wanted to eat there. I thought they were resourceful to use foam bowls for tea cups. But it was a step too far when we had to ask for plates, chopsticks and beg for napkins. BEEF WITH SNOWPEAS: Best dish we ordered, snowpeas were bright green and crunchy. Too bad the water chestnuts were rancid. PORK HO MEI: Fat wide rice noodles, had chewy beef instead of pork, onions were good. SPICY SZECHUAN GREEN BEANS: Not fresh, maybe reheated? We asked for water... you gave us three cups. I had to ask for a sink or water fountain to which you replied we don't have one?!?! Then you told me to buy a bottle of water from you. So go next door to WaWa and buy a drink if you really want Chinese. Otherwise, try a different restaurant. We decided to try this place again and it was worse than the first time. The chicken tasted rubbery and salty. You could tell the chicken was cooked BEFORE it was breaded. The fried dumplings were hard inside but the dumpling sauce was good. The pork fried rice looked like it had been cooked and recooked several times. The egg roll tasted ok. The wonton soup was good if you don't eat the wontons. The crispy noodles were greasy and stale. All in all it was like the 3 other Chinese restaurants we have tried since coming here. It's been an hour now, and I've been standing at the counting for the last thirty of those minutes. Best part is that part of my order has been sitting in a bag since I got here. I came to a beach town and started craving Chinese food for some odd reason. I stumbled upon Number 1 Chinese and while I wouldn't call it Number 1 in it is passable. Decent whole in the wall Chinese spot. It smells like almost every Americanized Chinese place I have ever been in, not bad but a little odd. Nothing special on the inside, a handful of table, I recommend taking your order and going. Staff was friendly enough, one guy goofing off on his computer and a lady running the register and the kitchen. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken but I was thinking of Thai food when I did so I didn't really want it, with that said it was still pretty good. The chicken pieces were breaded nicely and cooked well. Rice was nicely prepared and a excellent addition to the meal. Great and modest at the same time, this tiny little Chinese restaurant in Bethany has the formula down just right. Decent prices, good location, polite and friendly, and some very nice dishes for take out. Make sure you order early in the summertime, otherwise you may not get through on their phone lines- yes, it's that popular! I've sampled several vegetarian dishes and they have all been nicely prepared. This is not Kowloon or Shanghai, but really good stuff for our touristy little area. Disappointing first-time visit (carryout only due to COVID crisis). We're satisfied regulars at China Express and thought we'd mix it up a bit and give #1 a try after driving by it for years. We stayed away from the dishes sold by the pint or quart and went for the Sichuan Hunan specialties, figuring these would be the best they had to offer. If they are the best, then you absolutely want to stay away from the pint/quart selections. Kung po [sic] chicken not great (0*). I'm not a fan of a lot of spice heat, but this one was *really* bland. Absence of the red pepper (that you're not supposed to eat) was a giveaway. Not much chicken, was essentially a bunch of limp vegetables in a brown sauce better suited to beef. Also first time I've ever seen mushrooms in this dish, had I known I would have asked them to make it without them. So if you're compelled to order after reading this and don't like 'shrooms...there's a tip for you. If you order ANYTHING and don't like 'shrooms, you may want to ask just in case. General Tso's chicken fared somewhat better (3*). You can't really skimp on the amount of chicken in this dish. Fried appropriately crispy, but sauce wasn't all that exciting. Broccoli included in the sauce was fresh. Egg drop soup was okay after we added salt, but the accompanying soup noodles were commercial LaChoy-type and totally stale, with no crunch whatsoever. If you're eating in, I can promise you that you won't be asking for more like you might with freshly-fried soup noodles. On the plus side...if you manage to find a dish you like, the portions are huge for the price, enough for two meals. The white rice was perfectly steamed, the guy at the pickup counter was nice, wearing a mask and gloves while protected by the window. All the usual Chinese sauces in packets in the pickup area for the taking (the inclusion of ketchup packets here should have given me a hint of what was to come). And it was waiting for me in the promised ten minutes, I may have been the only customer that night. read more
