I went here years ago and always had a good lunch. Its been a while and I decided to have lunch to go. I noticed they raised their prices but also portion size is less. But worst of all I ordered a Chinese Chicken salad and it was nothing as advertised. All I received was shredded chicken, shredded lettuce and onions. I can't eat onions and onions weren't even advertised in the salad. I wouldn't have bought the salad had I known it was bait and switch. I wouldn't return there nor ever buy the salad I received. I'm sorry to report that I cannot recommend this place, although I am willing to give this place another shot. My review is limited to just the food as I did not dine inside the restaurant (I had a take out order, and the electricity was out the day I visited). While the limited service I had interacted with was just fine, it was the food that really disappointed me. The hostess was nice, the gentlemen in the back--maybe also the chef, seemed nonchalant about things. The decor inside the restaurant seemed old and dated, but hey, it looks like a small hole in the wall Chinese restaurant, right? So fitting? Okay, let's get to the food. We ordered the Onion Cake, the Kung Pao Chicken, and the Basil Eggplant. The Kung Pao Chicken was inedible. So let's talk about the Onion Cake. It was fine, a bit surprising that it wasn't called a deep fried Onion Pancake, because that's exactly what it was. I've yet to encounter an onion pancake that's a deep fried, but it wasn't too bad. The onion to pancake ratio was also rather low. While I wouldn't order this again, it wasn't bad. The Basil Eggplant was actually fairly decent. I am a fan of eggplants and basil, and this dish was done rather well. Flavor was decent, but could have done with more basil. This dish left more to be desired. Now, the Kung Pao Chicken was inedible. Regardless of all of the ingredients I was able to pick out, all I could taste was salt. It was simply much too salty for any good and we ended up throwing this dish away. There wasn't any vibrant spicy or umami flavors. No hints of peanut flavors, although plenty was used (old peanuts?). It was just simply too salty and overbearing where eating this dish with rice was unpleasant. I would honestly give this place a try again, but I'd be cautious with my second visit. read more

We've lived in the area for quite some time, and just now tried Hunan Taste. This spot has been here for over 30 years! We tried the onion cake, meat pie, kung pao beef, and curry eggplant. Warning, make sure you like spicy if they ask to make it spicy cause it has HEAT. Flavor was good on everything, my favorite being the meat pie and the eggplant. So I've been periodically going to Hunan Taste ever since my business attorney turned me on to this family owned restaurant 8-10 years ago. I wrote a review many years ago but felt compelled to write a new review since I mostly see the next generation (daughter?) taking orders and running the front-of-house, and not the older parents. I ordered 5 dishes to go a few days ago after not eating at the restaurant in over 6 months. Once again, I was reminded of the unique and authentic flavors of Hunan food. These guys masterfully use spicy and fresh hot wok cooking that is not being done elsewhere. The flavors are pronounced and spicy. We ordered fish fillets in back bean sauce, basil beef, kung pao chicken, hot & sour soup and a meat pie. All dishes, except the soup, were so delicious. I was reminded how special this place is. The soup was just okay, not as flavorful as the rest of the dishes. If you haven't tried Hunan Taste, and you appreciate fresh hot wok cooking and spicy flavors, you have to try this place. Absolutely obsessed with their garlic chicken over rice lunch plate. If it's dinner time you must buy a la cart but it comes with a lot of meat for the dinner portion. The food is exceptional and has been 35 years. For 20 years I visted bi-weekly and NEVER had a bad meal. I stop by annually now and nothing has changes. Same great menu with a few specialty additions including Curry Chicken and lamb dishes. The service is veyr fast as the venue only holds about 30 people. The ambiance takes a while to get used to as it is a high pace environment at lunch, dinners are a little relaxed. If I had to guess I would say it is a converted dry cleaner with a window providing a view into the kichen. My go to's: Hot and Sour soup - lots of good stuff and a great flavor. Better than any other place I've had before. I was so excited to try this Hunan restaurant given the good reviews and then I quickly realized some faults in judgement: Upon walking in, none of the patrons were Asian. Menus were all written in English. The tables were set with forks and chopsticks needed to be requested. Tap water with no ice was served, and the table cover was a Chinese zodiac information sheet. Plus a little bug scurried past us on the floor. Indeed, I had stepped into a restaurant catered entirely to non-Chinese patrons and the quality showed. First of all, this is really not authentic Hunan cuisine. A quick peruse at their menu and I was rather disappointed in the Cantonese-American style foods you'd find in a Panda Express. Not that I don't like that kind of food- it's just not what I was looking for. The food wasn't all that bad but nothing really stood out. Their Hunan Beancurd w/ Prawns ($15) was the best dish of the night, with good flavors and shrimp that had been baked. Hunan Shredded Pork ($12) was a close second. We also ordered their Pork Noodles ($10) in a spicy peanut sauce, but nothing about it was spicy. Items on the menu were also not very detailed so any allergy you have needs to be communicated. My friend with a bean sprout allergy did not expect to see it on one of the dishes. They were kind enough to give us a new batch but I wish they had explained it at the beginning. While the food was better than everything looked/felt, and I appreciated their accommodation to my friend's allergy, I didn't feel this was the Hunan cuisine I was looking for tonight. Plus, it was a bit weird to have the one owner/server stare at us while eating given the quiet nature of the restaurant when nobody else is around. My daughter and I had lunch here recently for the first time after a volunteer event. Used Yelp to find a place near where we were since we were so hungry. It's not much to look at from the outside so you would maybe miss it if you weren't aware. But when you peek inside it has a warm but basic feel. This isn't fine dining, but the vibe is homey and comfortable. We ordered steamed dumplings in spicy sauce and oh my goodness, some of the best we've ever had. We shared the sweet and sour chicken lunch special and veggie fried rice - both were melt in your mouth. Can't wait to go back and try more options from the menu. This place was a little out of the way and looked like it was right out of a time capsule. When we entered we were seated right next to a window that overlooked the kitchen which is always an excellent sign. It means that they don't hide anything and are proud of what they make. This place has some big time "wok energy." We ordered the Hot and Sour Soup, Hunan Tofu, Chicken with Black Bean Sauce, and dry fried green beans. None of the dishes were shy on spice or flavor. The hot and sour soup was the perfect amount for three people, the veggies were fresh and the egg drop was the perfect ratio. The Hunan Tofu had a perfect ratio of sauce to tofu and the tofu chunks were cut to a size that allowed them to retain their shape and texture. The Chicken in black bean sauce was a savory experience with a silky sauce that had preserved black beans that were fresh and had a nice waxy texture with a burst of salty ginger bean goodness. The dry fried green beans were cooked perfectly so they had a pleasant texture and also had tons of garlic and spice. The only thing I would change would be to have a touch more Szechuan pepper in the dishes to bring forward a little bit of mouth numbing action with a clean finish. I would definitely return here to try some of the other amazing dishes on the menu. read more

I'm really not sure how this restaurant gets 4 stars. It's 2-3 stars at best. I had to throw away the dry fried string beans cuz they lost all structure n crunch (over fried). It's such a simple common dish - usually has soy sauce and onions - this was not salty and too spicy and no umami. Onion pancake had literally 8 pieces of onion - so like 2 per cut slice. Lamb was ok. Missing umami. Pictures of food speak louder than the rating on this one. read more

Had some Hunan Taste Restaurant grub for lunch today during the office meeting. I'm not the biggest Chinese food eater out there, so I stuck with what I know - Lemon Chicken. Now, I'm sort of a health freak, so imagine my disappointment when I saw that it was breaded chicken! Fine, I'll still eat it, free food and I'm hungry. After picking off the breaded section, I thought it was ok. A little too dry for my taste. There were little pieces of lemon under the chicken, which I squeezed onto my chicken. There were also little containers of what I thought was more lemon, but nope. Some kind of sugary-lemony substance. Sure, it tasted good, but that bikini for Vegas came to mind, so I skipped it. White rice was also ordered for me, it's leg day at the gym, so I guess I can afford some carbs. My co-workers went fancy and ordered Mongolian chicken and Kung Pao chicken (claimed they were both very spicy), dumplings with hot sauce, sea food chow mien, and hot and sour soup. I wasn't able to get a picture of all that because, hey, I wouldn't like it if someone was trying to sneak a picture of my food. It's rude! But they all seemed satisfied with there food since it was all gone. I don't plan on ordering from Hunan, but at least I can say that I tried something new! read more
