I went and got my wood but, determined to stop for lunch before the 1.5 hr drive to my jobsite, I popped into the Whistlepig. Four people waited ahead of me, one with a family-sized order, and my wait was about seven or eight minutes. That's when I snapped the shots Being a cheapskate, I opted for the pork sandwich, jambalaya, and collards. The order was bagged and handed to me practically instantly. I turned around to face a self-serve bbq sauce bar featuring 1oz containers to fill with your choice of 5 different *homemade* sauces and three or four from sweet baby ray. I left the grocery-store stuff for the next guy and filled up on the unique ones. The jambalaya was nice spice level and flavorful with a fair amount of meat. The pork sandwich was good, except for the lump of crispy fat which was DELICIOUS!! I think I've had better collards, though these were alright. I ate my meal in their track-side picnic table pavilion. A freight went by and was quite loud. So, it was authentic whistlepig ambience. I'd do it again. Next time I'll try the brisket, coleslaw, and hopefully some smoked chicken. And I'll get the dessert. Maybe if I get back there in summer they'll have the peach crisp!! Was probably sitting for quite awhile as service was super fast. Too fast honestly. Ribs - again, bland. Better cook on these than the brisket tho. Their sauces were the high point and elevated the meats from disappointing to average for the price which is quite cheap IMO. Mac and cheese and Cole slaw were just fine as well. I'd rather pay 2x the price at Meat BBQ when I'm in the mood for smoked meat.

I also wanted a nice place to hang out and write. Evelyn Bay far exceeded my expectations. It doesn't look like much from outside, but inside is a very cool old space, very open and airy with very high ceilings, hardwood floors, a gorgeous tin ceiling, and an eclectic mix of furniture, local crafts, and art. The people working there are quite nice. There are a variety of fresh brewed coffees. I asked for the dark roast, which was actually a very tasty medium-bodied coffee. I judge this a triumph in Charlotte, where most people seem to prefer their coffee pretty bland. I also had a delicious bran muffin. I didn't try the expresso drinks. There's free wifi, which seems to be pretty fast. (I'm writing this at the restaurant.)

On 6/4 went back to resturant to question the charge. They said they didn't know why but saw my signature and total of $25.00. And said it had to goto corporate for a refund. Went back to resturant on 6/16 to get an update and was told they would check with corporate office for status. It is now 6/23 and no refund. Probably going to visa to file a Complaint with them to get it corrected. Be sure to check statements to verify charges on credit cards.

Received my order and when I looked at the potato cakes they were so overly cooked with very hard crusty like outer and dark burned taste. Normally the potato cakes are very tasty and cooked just right. I also order an ice tea. There were maybe 5-6 tiny pieces of ice in the cup. I noticed the ice tea was very cloudy, and just had this nasty old taste to it. As well as not being even the slight bit cold. Again I usually get the ice tea and it usually is good. I ordered a complete arby classic meal deal and it cost me $9.95. The sandwich was the only thing I could eat, as I couldn't stand to eat the very hard burnt tasting potato cakes, nor drink the ice tea. So those two items were tossed out. Leaving me with a $9.95 arby classic sandwich only. Cooks here at this Arby's need to focus better on timing of their fries and potato cakes cooking so to not burn them. Plus seeing the oil isn't very dirty their using to cook them in. I'll go back once more and if it hasn't improved I will stop eating at this Arby's.
