We wanted to find a fun place for our anniversary dinner and the menu at the Hunters Chophouse stood out right away with the exotic game meat choices. We made reservations and the place had free parking right out front. Make sure to make the first turn into the restaurant, the turn afterwards gets you into the lake area instead. The restaurant has animal decor, I saw stuffed elk, bear, bobcat and even fox. We started with the wild game brats sampler which included smoked buffalo, jalapeño elk, apricot boar, pheasant, three cheeses, crackers and raspberry chipotle sauce. I liked the cheese, boar and buffalo but was not as big a fan of the other items. I had the bison burger with French fries for my main and that was absolutely delicious and a very big portion. I went to Hunters Chophouse for my anniversary and it was a great choice. The wine list is enormous if you're into that, and the menu strikes a great balance between classic steakhouse fare and Western game like elk, bison, boar, and pheasant. We started with the Wild Game Brats Sampler, and the pheasant brat was the clear standout of the bunch. The raspberry chipotle dipping sauce that came with it was outstanding. For my entree, I went with the Bison Oscar, and it was a 10/10 -- perfectly cooked and paired with a rich, creamy risotto. I had the rib eye steak with asparagus, a loaded baked potato, and crab cakes for the appetizer. Others had the brat selection, the brussel sprouts, and the shrimp apetizers. The steak was a tad overcooked beyond medium rare. There was a lot of gristle to cut through. The steak knives were not sharp, and made cutting the meat that was a bit tough difficult. It seemed underseasoned. A great steak I'd eat without sauce. This one I should have requested sauce. The baked potato was small. The sour cream was stingy. The skin was tough, as if it had been cooking for a long time. I was really wanting a big baked potato with butter, cheese, sour cream, bacon, and chives. This one was disappointing. My crab cakes were the hero of the meal -- very tasty and moist. The wild game brats were disappointing. It was a selection of several different kinds of game meat, but the pieces were small and too spicy. The cheese on the board had been cut into squares and left out a bit too long. The asparagus was thick and long. Could have been cooked a little bit longer to make them more tender. The brussel sprouts were overcooked. Some people prefer them a little toasted on the outside, though. I didn't like the shrimp sauce. The shrimp were small. There was bread soaked in the sauce that actually made the bread taste bad. I was planning a visit to Estes Park with mom, and she suggested we find a place with game meat, to really revel in the Colorado experience. I found Hunters Chophouse online, and only later realized it was also a really convenient stroll from our lodging (Murphy's Resort). We made a reservation for the dining room ahead of the Saturday night rush. The restaurant vibe was warm and inviting, and our server was excellent. Hunters Chophouse offers cocktails, beer, and a pretty nice wine list. They have a small bar section, and limited outdoor seating as well (though the view isn't as impressive as the area might otherwise suggest). I ordered the Elk Chops and mom got the Bison Steak Oscar. The Elk Chops were cooked to perfection, and the accompanying sides (creamy barley risotto and asparagus) and sauces were delicious. I tried my mom's bison as well, and that was also lovely. I do wish they had a more varied selection of sides with their entrees (I'm not sure I would want to visit numerous times in a trip with so many entrees being presented similarly), but that said, the menu does offer a number of different directions to explore. Let me just say this...if you're in Estes Park and don't make time for dinner at Hunters Chophouse, you're seriously missing out. This is one of those places that doesn't just serve food... it delivers a full experience. From the second we arrived on July 4th, we knew we were in for something special. And wow, did it deliver. The smells alone when we walked in had us swooning. That warm, savory aroma coming out of the kitchen was pure magic and had us instantly excited for the meal ahead. But it wasn't just the food that made the night...it was the people. Bishwa, our host, was incredible. Warm, friendly, and clearly someone who takes pride in making sure guests feel taken care of. He walked us out to the patio and found us a gorgeous table right in view of where the fireworks would later light up the sky. The patio itself is lovely...shaded, lined with flower barrels, with just the right mix of rustic and welcoming. He came by several times to check in, chat with us about the town, and even offered to bring over the sommelier after we casually mentioned we'd be switching from cocktails to wine. It's rare to meet someone so genuinely invested in the guest experience, and it absolutely set the tone for the evening. Victoria, the sommelier, came over soon after and was such a joy. She asked thoughtful questions, listened to what we typically enjoy, and then helped us choose the most amazing bottle...2019 Caravan Cabernet Sauvignon out of Napa. It was smooth, rich, and had this velvety finish that paired beautifully with the steaks we'd ordered. The Darioush Cab Sav was bold, elegant, and clearly made with love. And yes, I will absolutely be adding a stop at the Darioush tasting room on our next Napa trip...and ordering a case of that Caravan while I'm at it. No shame! Yana, our server, kept the good vibes rolling. She was calm, professional, and had that perfect timing where she always showed up just when we needed something...never hovering, never rushed. She made a few great recommendations, kept the pace of our dinner relaxed and enjoyable, and made us feel like we could just settle in and savor the evening. The fun surprise of the night was running into Sujib, one of the owners who we'd met earlier in the week at Park Tavern, Hunters' sister restaurant. Even though it was clearly a busy night, he took a moment to stop by our table and ask how everything was going. That kind of leadership speaks volumes, and it definitely didn't go unnoticed. To top it all off, we were lucky enough to see Ivana again...the warm and friendly hostess from Park Tavern who had helped us book our reservation at Hunters. She remembered us, remembered our stories, and came by more than once just to check in and say hello. That kind of genuine connection is so rare these days, and she made us feel like old friends rather than just another table. Now let's talk about the food...because on this night...wow. My girlfriend ordered the ribeye, grilled to medium, and it was absolutely perfect. Tender, juicy, full of flavor, and served with a loaded baked potato and crisp broccolini. Her husband chose the Bison Oscar, and I don't think he looked up from his plate for a solid ten minutes. Between the perfectly cooked bison NY strip, the generous topping of lump crab, the dill hollandaise, and the barley risotto, he was in heaven. He actually said it was one of the best meals he's ever had and joked that we're planning our next vacation around him getting to eat it again. Honestly, I believe him. My husband and I both had the filet mignon with a red wine demi-glace that was so flavorful I almost asked for a spoon just to finish every drop. The filets were melt-in-your-mouth tender, perfectly seasoned, and cooked to perfection. We didn't leave a single bite on the plate. That almost never happens. As the fireworks began lighting up the sky over Estes Park, we sat on that beautiful patio surrounded by friends, laughter, and glasses of Caravan Cab Sav, feeling like we'd struck gold with this dinner. The main issue with this restaurant is the prices. They are outrageous for what you get. I don't mind splurging for quality food, but the food was subpar at best. The Roasted Chicken Thighs were DRENCHED in cream sauce, making the skin soggy and unappealing, the bison was too chewy to eat, and the only entree salad on the menu was all lettuce and very little ingredients. The risotto was god awful, and the salad dressing tasted like hidden valley, which I would expect a homemade dressing for the price of a side salad. They apparently also did away with the rolls. On a positive note, the Parmesan Truffle Brussels Sprouts were good, along with a ginormous slice of very moist, good, carrot cake. We went there for a special dinner event and were not disappointed. We were quickly seated and handed the custom menu. Everything looked good so we knew it was going to be a hard choice. We started with adult beverages and Sarma. The appetizer and the drinks came out quickly. The Sarma was wonderful and we were sad there were but two! My Sazerac was also good. Smoked drinks are always a nice touch. The staff always stopped by to see if we were OK while waiting for our main course. The place was not loud at all and we could have a conversation without yelling. The main course showed up and we dug right in. The Pork fell off the bone and I had to force myself to a slower eating pace so I could enjoy it longer! Kudos to the chef. My spouse also enjoyed her choice. We were pleasantly surprised when we got a dessert helping us celebrate an anniversary. The Mousse to Donut hole ratio was right on! What an interesting combination that worked extremely well. We went here based on Yelp positive reviews. The decor looked like a hunter's lodge with animals on the walls, also stone walls, antler chandeliers, and thick wooden tables and chairs. There was a 25 minute wait for a table so we found seats at the bar. We ordered gin and tonic drinks along with Brussels sprouts and French onion soup for the starters. Both were delicious. For the main course, we ate Kobe beef burger ($20) and Filet Mignon ($42). Both meals were moist and made perfectly. During our dinner, the power went out for about 45 minutes and customers patiently waited for the lights to come back on. Our host let us know the wait time (we did not have reservations) and even offered a little humor suggesting we watch the elk show while we wait (a herd of elks just walked up to the field next to the restaurant and we're making noises and posing quite elegantly). We went here for dinner on a Sunday night. The restaurant was nearly full and we did not have reservation but they found a table for us. The ambiance is that of a hunter's lodge--antlers and stuffed animals on all the walls. The atmosphere is casual and completely unpretentious. We started with the smoked trout dip. I love smoked trout so I was really looking forward to it, but there were two problems. First, the dip has a lot cheddar cheese on top and trout is a very mild fish that can easily be overpowered. So the dip was mostly a cheese dip with just a hint of smoke and trout. I had the bison burger ($19). Bison is leaner than beef so the restaurant won't cook the burger beyond medium or else it will be dry. The burger came with blue cheese crumbles and the usual tomato, lettuce, onion. There was also a very generous portion of bacon but it was undercooked and very fatty, so I just removed it. Once I did that, the burger was one of the better burgers I have had, juicy and very flavorful. Bison does not have a gamey flavor at all. It is one-half pound and I could not finish it all. The accompanying fries were absolutely superb: crispy, well-seasoned. The wife had the spaghetti squash which is a vegetarian dish but you can add a side of protein for an additional charge. She liked it although she was expecting spaghetti with veggies, not squash as the "spaghetti" noodles. We both had an IPA that was excellent. Our server was friendly and helpful. She was accommodating when the kid wanted an extra pickle and ice tea with no ice. So we were pleased with the service. Overall, it was a good experience and I would return. read more

It was just "ok". My daughter and I both had the Whiskey Blue Bison Burger ($20). They were able to accommodate some special requests/alternatives for the sides, which was appreciated. The overall ambiance doesn't really match the price of the food. I feel like there would be much better balance with some minor upgrades to the decor. Example: Our table had a battery powered votive candle, but was missing the votive holder. All of the tables had a lonely little naked candle, which was pretty sad. I did enjoy the Hunter aspect with the taxidermy, but they could certainly kick it up a notch or two. Our server, Stephanie, was really wonderful and attentive. I stayed walking distance to Hunters after a long day of driving, and wanted a steak so my decision was practical. I saw the mixed reviews, but I saw no evidence for complaint on my visit. My choice to sit at the bar was a good start. The dining room seemed a little dated and sterile, but the bar was cozy and stylish. Met some nice people and we ended up essentially having a pleasant meal together, and I got to see (and taste) several dishes. My rib eye was absolutely cooked to perfection. One of the best I've ever had, and that is my steak of choice. I've had them in some of the top steak houses in London and NY. This was as good, and mostly better. Green beans were a simple accompaniment and cooked to perfection. The baked potato was a little bit of a let down. It seemed cooked earlier and maybe reheated or kept warm under a lamp. The cheese was a hard crust and the skin was tough and chewy. It also had way too much bacon tossed on top. But I was there for the steak so I didn't care much. New friends' lamb and bison were delicious and much enjoyed by the orderer's. Their 4-layer carrot cake (also my favorite) was on point. Very good. The bartender, Christian, was a young man from Macedonia and he was very considerate, attentive, and skilled. The "Colorado Manhattan" was definitely a novel twist on the drink and probably not for everyone, but I loved it. A glass of Bordeaux with dinner was good, but not cheap at $18. Tried this place out tonight and was not disappointed. Both food and service were terrific. Had the smoked elk carpaccio as a starter and it was fabulous. I'd order that for a meal it was so good. Then came the elk chops. Ordered them medium rare but probably closer to rare which is fine with me. I would not go beyond medium on the cook. It came with creamy risotto and 4 shrimp. Frankly the shrimp weren't needed but it doesn't matter, the chops and risotto were terrific. To finish the meal, the four of us shared a slice of carrot cake. It also did not disappoint. My husband and I had the Kobe beef burger. I had baked potato (you can get loaded or regular) and hubby had onion rings. One of the best burgers I have ever had. It has carmelized oniond, Gruyère cheese, onion jam, Parmesan garlic aioli, tomato it was fantastic and service was great. We went at 4pm on Sunday when they open for dinner. No reservation and it was not crowded. I have heard their salmon is great too. She wished us happy anniversary when she greeted us. We ordered the Elk carpaccio which was different, and we really enjoyed it. The pops of berry were quite nice. I was afraid it would taste too smoky but it was very delicate. The Elk tenderloin was cooked perfectly as was the Oscar Bison steak. We subbed for the mashies, which was worth every penny of the $1.50 fee. We were so excited to eat our entrees that we forgot to take pictures!! The atmosphere of the restaurant is superb. The decor and lighting is perfect for a romantic evening out if that is what you are shooting for on your stay in Estes Park. Our sever was good; all our drinks were on time and always full, with ample amount of check-ins throughout the service. The food is good, but nothing over the top. The French onion soup had very good flavor and could have been the STAR of the show, if not for the croutons. I literally had to take them out of the bowl and cut them with the provided steak knives. I ordered a 12oz beef ribeye eye and my wife an 8oz beef filet mignon. We switched plates for differing potato options as the menu said that any subs on sides would incur a $4 charge. My wife and I ordered our steaks medium as we normally do. We have Cole to know that if you're eating at a supposed steakhouse, it's better to order up one scale and we were right on here. We normally like our steaks medium rare to rare and when our "medium" steaks came out, they were actually cooked medium rare as we normally like them. (Restaurant hack for you all reading this) I would say the filet has far better flavor than the filet, which is to be expected, but these steaks are most likely low end choice grade steaks (yes, I would know, I raise cattle and we butcher all our own beef) The sides were fairly bland and not all that great. The mashed potatoes were easily the best of the sides, the asparagus was just okay and the loaded baked potato was a mess at best. I have never seen such thick chopped, chewy bacon mixed into a baked potato as this one. It was almost inedible. I would say for the price you pay, this would not be worth it anywhere else BUT in a place like Estes Park. This is a tourist town and a very small one at that. This place makes up for what they lack in food quality with a great ambiance and fairly good wait staff. If you're here in town vacationing, don't expect a high end steakhouse. The table next to us had steak and some apps and they raved that the game was some of the best prepared they have had.
