A delicious assortment of BBQ at this outlet of Hursey's in Graham. Having passed the billboard for Hursey's on I-40 many times, decided to give them a try. Ordered a combo plate, offering the opportunity to try a little of everything. The combo gives you chopped pork BBQ, brunswick stew, ribs, fried chicken, 2 sides and hush puppies. Every one of the meats is delicious. Ribs are thick, smoked to perfection - falling off the bone. A great char on the outside, tender and moist on the inside. Chicken breaded and fried golden brown. The breast is juicy and tender, not at all greasy. Also smoked expertly, the chopped pork is moist and flavorful; served unsauced. Brunswick stew is a scrumptious concoction of chopped pork, corn, diced potatoes, lima beans in a tomato-based broth. This might have been the best taste of the meal. Sides are OK, but nothing special. Finely chopped slaw is creamy and sweet; good but not great. Green beans tasted like out of a can. Hush puppies were great, nice and crunchy and sweet. Shout out to the BBQ sauce. This is Hurley's own, and outstanding. It's a unique combo of vinegar and tomato based, slightly hot, slightly sweet, slightly tangy. You KNOW a bottle of that stuff was purchased to go. If you're a local or just passing through on I-40, take the 1 mile detour off the interstate for some solid BBQ. read more

I dropped in at Hursey's for lunch, expecting things to be busy. I found the restaurant rather quiet though. This place is reasonably easy to find and has plenty of parking. The interior is what you might expect from a local barbecue chain. Service was quick after the initial order, though it took a while to get a refill and to retrieve my check. As for the food, I selected a large plate of chopped pork with slaw, beans, and hushpuppies. I liked the flavor of the pork, though the texture seemed more pulled than chopped. The baked beans were not especially remarkable, but the pups were pretty tasty. The slaw was of the creamy white variety, and while it had a good crunch I didn't find it especially flavorful. Graham is probably too far east for barbecue slaw, but I think this meal would have went better with the red stuff than the white variety they offered. The portions were fair, and total cost when adding a glass of tea came to just over $14. Again, not horrible in the current economy. Were I rating this visit on the flavor of the meat alone, I might go four stars, maybe even 4.5. But the sides and the slow follow-up service move this down in the assessment. read more

We were coming homefrom Greensboro for the NC HS State Track Championship going more of the back way to Johnston county because 40 is full of idiots and found this place. We were all hungry and BBQ is always good. Walk in and immediately was greeted. The lady up front was nice. A gentleman in the kitchen area spoke to us and came out from the back and spoke to us. Man I hate to do this...Hursey's is a long time local favorite for great BBQ. We, however, went in on a Saturday morning hoping for some good breakfast. We got there around 9:20 and the place was packed. We had to wait 5 minutes or more just to be seated. We were eventually taken to our table. We saw some folks we know so we spoke with them for a few minutes and sat down. Once we sat, it was easily 15 minutes before anyone took our order for drinks or food. By then, we definitely knew exactly what we wanted. I ordered a veggie omelette with no cheese & a side of bacon, and the hubs ordered the country fried steak platter. Our drinks were brought out shortly thereafter. The coffee was hot, so that was good. I reasoned quickly that they must be short staffed. Many people in the restaurant (all tables were full) did not have their food yet. Not a good sign plus...we rarely saw any employees in the dining room taking orders or serving food. We will skip ahead...we sat there for an hour and never got any food. We asked a server if she knew when it was coming out and she went to check on it. Ten minutes later she brought out my omelette and gave my husband a tenderloin biscuit. *sigh*. By then we had wasted a good chunk of our Saturday morning and were ready to leave. Stopped in tonight after helping a friend work on their new home in area. We walked in as a party of five and were the only patrons inside. A few tables were seated shortly after. Hostess was a pleasure! Very kind and sweet young lady. We starred with drinks and my sweet tea was delicious. Our food arrived about ten minutes later. I had the large chopped bbq plate. The bbq was tasty. The okra was top notch. Both the hush puppies and the french fries seemed as they had been under a heat lamp since lunch. Very firm to say the least. This could result from business being so slow tonight in which the waitress said was very unusual. I ended my meal with banana pudding, it was mediocre to say the least. We will go back and give them another shot when they are more busy when hopefully all the items on the plate will be fresh. This restaurant has ample amounts of parking. Clean. Lots of wood decor to give it a cabin feel. They also have a drive through here for your convenience as well. read more

I find that this place is "hit" or "miss". Their breakfast is great. But, that depends on what you get. Stay away from the Country Fried Steak...it is the worst thing on their menu. It seems that things have changed a little since the last time I visited Hursey's. To be fair, it's still a very solid establishment with good food and friendly people. It's just that the food isn't as good as I remembered it to be. Specifically, when I recently tried the ribs (both pork and beef), they were somewhat dry and lacking in BBQ sauce, particularly the pork ribs. I also remember the beef ribs being larger in portion. The chopped BBQ pork was good, but I felt like it lacked the smokey flavor I was hoping for. Without a doubt, it's still a great place to get chopped BBQ pork. The brunswick stew, however, didn't disappoint. I think it's what Hursey's does best, and would recommend it to anyone. It's basically a large portion of BBQ pork in a rich, flavorful tomato-based stew, and that's all you really need to know. Go get you some now before you miss out. I also tried their milkshakes and wasn't too impressed with the peach flavor - it was too icy and not creamy enough. The banana pudding was good, though - a lot thicker and tastier. This place still serves up some good pork barbecue and broasted chicken, but the service here has completely tanked. We sat at the drive thru window for nearly 5 minutes - no sight or sound of intelligent life. So, around to the front, and inside for take out. One customer at the register, finishing up his take out order, and then mine was taken by a single lady, who was also taking call in orders (and there were a few), and taking payments for the sit down diners - one gentleman waited over 5 minutes to pay hill check! After about 10 minutes, and no sign of my order, the lady at the register ask me if my order had been taken - I gently reminded her that she had been the one to take it, more than a few minutes earlier. Finally, after 15 minutes, she said my order was ready, but it was complete, so more time spent waiting. She said something to a gentlemen in the kitchen, and he became all attitude. And once I did get the food, it was subpar - Fried Chicken tasted old, FFs were limp & under cooked, and the slaw was bland. Never had this problem at any of the other locations. We have eaten at the older restaurant on Church Street a while back. But after eating at the store in Graham, I remember why it was a while ago. This was a take out order with two sliced BBQ plates an order of onion rings and a few other items. The BBQ was more like left over and crumbs, and the onion rings, were not worth the cost. Decent barbecue, but I had expected better. I ordered a 1/2 rack of ribs with chicken and some wings as an appetizer. The top layer of meat on the ribs was a bit dry but the meat of the bones was good. Tip: when it says chicken on the menu, it is fried chicken, not barbecue. The Hursey's in Graham is a mixed bag. Breakfast and generally the service is good, otherwise I would avoid the place. Some qualifiers first. I am generally not a fan of biscuits, hush puppies (more than a couple) or creamy cole slaw, so that rules out about half of their menu. Also, their pork BBQ is very disappointing (learned this when I first moved here) - chopped, not pulled - and chopped so fine like a can of cheap tuna. So more than 3/4s of the menu I can disregard. I had to go there a few weeks ago for a meeting (not my choice) and wanted something other than their standard BBQ. They had a Tuesday night chicken special. Well, there was nothing special about it. Basically a baked chicken quarter with a glob of sweet BBQ sauce. The meal wasn't very hot and the fries were limp. Ate the coleslaw (OK) and surprisingly the hush puppies were the best item on the plate. Overall, below average. You can do better elsewhere. read more

Staff is friendly and efficient. 2 of us split the BBQ plate with pork ribs, pulled pork, fried chicken and Brunswick stew. The fried chicken was by far the best item on the table, though the pulled pork was tender. The BBQ sauce was a little sweet and a little vinegary. It reminded us of Chinese duck sauce mixed with a hit of bbq sauce flavor. Overall the food was ok, but I will continue to try other local spots. BBQ was really good for a vinegar based East Carolina style BBQ! We had great service from both the hostess and the waitstaff! I highly recommend the cobbler-a-la-mode! The potato salad was normal. The onion rings had a nice batter that wasn't too heavily seasoned so you could easily taste the sweet Vidalia onion underneath. The coleslaw was standard vinegar based type, not my favorite but at least it was fresh. Yay. Pass over the apple turnover and the banana pudding. Both were too Piccadilly cafeteria-like. What can I say by giving one star, well I'll say this, the barbecue tasted good, not great, but good, maybe it would've been great if customer service had been great. So now let me tell you about my first experience and my last experience at Hersey's barbecue in the Graham North Carolina area I came in at 3:10 in the afternoon practically nobody in there and I'm sure not because the food is bad but because it's the time of day I was able to be seen by the counter immediately by the young lady they're servicing it I told her I want to take out I told her I wanted two pounds of pork and two sandwiches with slaw. All is well to this point. Then they could not find a pen for me to sign my credit card voucher that seem to take about 25 or 30 seconds the cook didn't have one he had to go find someone with a pen. Then my order came and I love my sandwich tripping with that vinegar-based sauce I like at least two containers per sandwich which meant the quantity they gave me I still needed to get at least two or four more for my 2 pounds of barbecue I was asked to pay $.50 for the two additional containers I looked like I must of been shocked which I was and then I basically took my credit card out paid the $.50 and then got in my car and I'm leaving this review. Nothing fancy however staff here are helpful and the food is great. I do with there were less advertisements on the menu though. I had the chopped BBQ plate which came with slaw and the added bacon mac&cheese. Very flavorful plate of food, add the BBQ sauce for more kick. It's sweet and spicy, bit hot so go easy on it. The quality at this location has gone down significantly. First off Drive thru is the slowest in the county. So order ahead and go inside if you want to go order. Rarely do you get what you order in drive thru so check it completely before driving off. The chicken used to be piping hot now seems like it was kept under a heat lamp. The BBQ is not as flavorful as it used to be in the past. I don't know if it is just the location leadership or has Erving changed in the menu or ingredients. I will absolutely say that in two separate visits they were out of Beef Ribs by 615 and I was told a burger takes at least ten minutes to cook. So if your kiddos want burgers just hit a separate drive thru. On second thought it might be worth it to find an alternative location. Quality is no match for price. Also others in our order said food was not hot and we just live five minutes away. Find an alternative dining spot is the best bet! read more

Gotta love NC BBQ!!! I heard about how great and fast service was at herseys for a while so I decided to come see for myself since I had a little time. I came around 11 am on a Friday and the place wasn't too busy. I was given the choice to sit at a booth or table and chose the booth in the corner. I was greeted by the waitress 10 seconds after the hostess sat us down. Service was quick and food came quick. I ordered the regular BBQ plate with the side of fries, slaw and hush puppies. I love their food and usually the service, but today I ordered 2 orders of pig tail fries. They were placed all together in one lump in a Styrofoam box. My order has to go to two different houses. Amble up to the Burlington, NC area and you'll find old fashioned bbq joints called Hursey's Bar-B-Q. These family style locales are full of tasty meat and wholesome sides. The sign proudly proclaimed the home of "broasted chicken" - which I had to Google. Wanting to taste this technique, we both ordered chicken and bbq plates full of meat, slaw, hushpuppies and fries The chicken was delicious! I got dark meat which was juicy and fried crisp. The batter on the chicken was flavorful, but not thick. The pork was wonderfully moist and not too vinegary. Tasty, but simple. Brian liked the slaw because of its small cut, I say "meh." This was also the first place I tasted the NC-local fave Cheerwine. This bubbly, spicy, cherry concoction is now a fave. It's sweet and wonderfully southern. My first BBQ sandwich! I have always gotten a chopped BBQ plate but never a sandwich! Who knew I was missing something so good all along. The BBQ had a nice smoky flavor and the slaw on it is also good. The best part is the BBQ sauce you can put on the sandwich! It's so yummy I've had it for lunch twice this week! Then again I can't help it when co-workers want to pay for my meal. The best deal is on Wednesdays when BBQ sandwiches are half price. BBQ is always a difficult review because there are so many different opinions on it. In my estimation, it's best just to take the Q for what it is and judge it accordingly. That's what makes Hursey's so difficult: there's very little to take it for. The BBQ itself is unremarkable in every possible way. It's not that it's bad... it's just not good, either. It's so average that it's hard to classify it as anything more than a pile of slightly mushy, very neutral-flavored meat. The sauce on the side is OK - almost a cross between a Lexington-style and Eastern-style sauce. It's got a sweet / tangy / spicy quality that definitely improves the otherwise bland meat. There are, however, two impressive standouts at Hursey's: the chicken and the hush puppies. The "broasted" (aka "fried") chicken is tasty, a tad greasy, and meaty and is probably the best local chicken around. The hush puppies are nice little greasy balls of fried cornbread that are difficult to improve upon. Aside from that, the wait staff is pleasant, though occasionally slow. Their was not one redeeming thing about any part of the food I ordered. I got the flounder with hush puppies, fries, slaw and peach cobbler. My friend got the apple cobbler milk shake. I took 2 bites of the fish and stopped ...Not chancing getting sick! The fries were frozen run of the mill Fries and the slaw was JUST cabbage and dressing which doesn't work for me.
