I've been going to Hursey's for 60 plus years. The last few years the quality has been steadily going down hill especially take out. Three times in a row t g e bbq sandwiches were dry and the buns tasted old. I complained each time to only get an I could care less from the person who took my order. Today I gave it another try through the drive through. I ordered two chopped trays, two sandwiches which were to be tomorrow's lunch and a small hushpuppy and they have really shrank. My total was over $30.00. The bbq on the trays were horrible and the slaw was bitter. I ended up just throwing the sandwiches away. I didn't go back to complain. Saw no need to do so. The man than took my order at the window when I looked puzzled it was so I got a little chippy. I haven't seen Charles or Chuck in years which makes me wonder if they have anything to do with Hurseys anymore . No more Hurseys problem for me. I'm not going back. read more

Absolutely the worst meal ever! Hursey Barbecue at 3721 S. Church St. Burlington is the location- 1 star is being generous. We eat there once a week and usually go through the drive thru. Yesterday (Saturday). I had a taste for ribs. I ordered the rib plate, and it was absolutely the worst food. The ribs tasted like they were cooked 4 or 5 days earlier. Not only were they hard but they were not hot. The meat was tuff and the barbecue sauce was sickening. I am used to my ribs being tender and fall off the bone good. These ribs were not. The hushpuppies were over cook and hard on the outside and inside. We will never eat there again. I give them a 0 rating. The quality of the food is horrible. For what we paid we could have eaten at Lone Star Steakhouse and Had fresh delicious food. read more

The prices for a rack aren't listed. Instead it says market price. Today's was $35 for a full rack. Service was good. Food was so-so. The rack was so hard and dry that we couldn't finish it. It's previously been soft and fall of the bone. Today's seemed dry and maybe cooked the day before and reheated. Either way, I would be better off going to chilis or Applebees for a consistent rack and lower price. Had not been here in years and likely not to return any time soon. I'm not sure where Mr. Hursey is now.... But I think it's time him and his family retires. This was the absolute WORST "bbq" I've ever had. Let me preface it but saying... I'm former military and I've had my fair share of MRE's. Those tasted better than whatever food this place makes. - The "bbq" looks and tastes like I just opened a can of dog food for my dog. But let's get this straight.. Others reviews are true. BBQ meat is soggy. Green beans stems didn't get removed on some so they are tough to eat. Bbq sauce ph is too low or something, first bite burn my throat a little bit but I am good after some water and second bite. Baby back ribs looks kinda big so probably regular ribs Weird thing is that I didn't expect to serve fried chicken on my bbq dinner plate in a bbq restaurant. I thought chicken will be bbq and not fried. Skin is crispy though but chicken meat is bland. We had Hursey's cater our clubs luncheon and boy was it delicious. The bbq sandwich with coleslaw was yummy as was the grilled chicken sandwich. Even the beans were seasoned well and not over cooked. The desserts were great too, I be hard pressed to decide if I liked the peach cobbler or banana pudding. I had both today. Stopped off 85 to try this. WOW!!!! we sat at drive through 10 mi pulled up to window still nothing. Knocked on window this girl, yes girl, comes to window and my husband explains what happened. She said if you pull up far enough we would have answered. We kept pulling up to the window how far do you have to pull up in the drive thru? Sooo she said so what do you want??? Really???? what great southern hospitality!!! I would not recommend to anyone to go here. Go to Smithfield's across the street. Service was absolutely fantastic! The food was really good! I got the BBQ and it was super moist without needing any sauce and had a ton of flavor. I didn't feel it was super vinegary, but definitely still has some of that expected NC vinegar taste. Little bit of a drive for me to go back, but it's worth it. I did get the peach cobbler for dessert and it was okay.... It definitely was canned fruit, so don't expect fresh. I probably wouldn't get the dessert again, but the meat was damn good. read more

We really liked this place! We weren't super hungry, so we split the large BBQ plate with a side of okra. BBQ was great - I understand why some people call it mushy, but I didn't mind. The hostess and some BOH staff were not wearing masks. Similarly, MOST customers did not have masks when entering, being seated, or ordering to-go. The hush puppies, what I'd expect to be top notch from a BBQ spot, were tiny, lacked flavor and were dense and chewy, not at all what you'd expect. There was solid value in portion size, but it wasn't able to overcome the total experience. Sweet tea is best explained as sugar that was told what tea tasted like. Almost syrup. Overall a disappointment but we don't live close and can decline to return when visiting family. I stopped in Hursey's for lunch and it started off bad. The person who was taking my order, could not explain the menu and answer my questions! I told her I wanted to dine in, but she packed my meal to go! So I sat down and opened my order, and I got a bun smaller then a cheeseburger from McDonald's, 2 small slices of pork that were white in color, 1 teaspoon of coleslaw on top of my sandwich, there was no taste, the total weight was less then 5oz! Stopped at this place while passing through the area. We ordered two bbq sandwiches with cole slaw, one order of french fries and a small order of hush puppies. The fries are the crispy kind and I don't care for those so they went in the trash, the bbq sandwiches were like mush...I don't know how to describe it other than say it tasted like the bbq was mixed with water. We each ate about 1/2 of our sandwiches. Unfortunately, we only ordered a small hush puppy but it was the best part of the meal. I didn't taste the bbq sauce but heard it wasn't good either. Came here with my family, and ordered the #2 combination: BBQ with Brunswick Stew, which came with hushpuppies, cole slaw, and mac & cheese (I swapped out the fries with mac & cheese). Also got to try the beef ribs, pork ribs, and "broasted" chicken. I'll start with the barbecue. I enjoyed the texture and the moistness, but it was a little lacking in body. I'm being super picky when I say that, though. It was great barbecue. The sauce was a bit too sweet for my liking, but it was still solid. The hushpuppies were pretty good as well. Cole slaw and mac & cheese were standard. The Brunswick stew was excellent. They gave a big portion of meat in the stew, and it had a nice consistency and flavor to it. Sometimes I've had Brunswick stew that is too runny and watery, but this one is one of the better ones I've had (Bullock's in Durham also has good Brunswick Stew). The beef ribs and pork ribs were both delicious. Fall-off-the-bone tender and great flavoring. No major gripes about either dish - I would recommend either of them if that's what you're in the mood for. The "broasted" chicken was interesting - something I had never tried before - but turned out excellent. Evidently they cook the chicken in a pressure cooker with oil, so that it's like fried chicken, except it's a little healthier because the chicken doesn't cook in the oil for as long, since it's being cooked under pressure. The moistness of the chicken is also retained very well from this method of cooking. I could definitely taste the difference. The chicken was nice and moist, while not being overly greasy (like Bojangles can oh-so-wonderfully be). The "healthier" option didn't make it any less tasty, so I was a fan. The rest of the sides we ordered (potato salad, baked beans, and fries) were standard - nothing spectacular, but nothing bad. We ended with peach cobbler and key lime pie. The peach cobbler (with ice cream) was just ok. The cobbler portion was too cake-y for my liking. I didn't get quite the contrast in texture that I like in a cobbler (soft gooey inside vs. crisp, crunchy, flaky outside). It was still a good cobbler, but I like mine prepared a different way. The key lime pie was good - not too heavy and not too sweet. The service was excellent - friendly and prompt. Hursey's is an institution, so if you're ever around the Burlington area, I would recommend stopping by for a meal. read more

Hursey's was the third, and sadly the final, stop on our NC barbecue trip, and I am glad we stopped by. It wasn't as good as Lexington, but it was a good meal, and the service was fast and friendly. I had the chopped barbecue plate, but with onion rings in place of french fries. The barbecue was finely chopped, and was plenty moist and tender. I would put it in the same class as Bullocks in Durham, which is a good thing. The sauce was a bit too tomato-y for my personal taste; I prefer mine tasting more of less like straight vinegar with a bunch of pepper. That said, it was a good sauce, and better than most. The real standout of the meal was the onion rings; they were some of the best I've had in years. They were obviously house-made, and were southern style, with a thin, flour-based coating, not that mealy, thick, corn-based junk you get at a lot of places. I would stop by again just for the onion rings, and the barbecue was good too, so I'd say I'm a fan. read more

Must try the chicken! We are doing our N.C. bbq trail trip. This is part of the trail, the bbq is eastern Carolina style, it was chopped bbq with a nice vinegar base with just a little heat and sweet. Got a sampler platter, I'm glad I did, as I was able to try their chicken. My son got dark meat on his platter and I got white meat on mine. This is their best product, it has great flavor and was super moist. The coating is so good and it's fried chicken. The ribs were good, nice flavor, decent portion. The coleslaw and hush puppies were also good. We ordered the Brunswick stew and it's slightly different from other places we've visited but I would still recommend trying it. The prices were wonderful and I feed 5 people who all eat until they wear full with deserts for under 70 dollars! read more

Ok, so absolutely not. This food was absolutely disgusting. I ordered the flounder meal and there was not an ounce of seasoning on it. The fries were cold and the hush puppies were hard. My family ordered food and my brothers shrimp was soggy. My mother ordered a two piece bbq chicken and they gave her bbq pork. We also ordered fried chicken and the chicken was so dry. Fortunately, the fries are really good and have a nice crispy coating and the cole slaw is good. This is my first time trying the flounder. It's not bad, a bit bland and rather thin. My wife ordered the chopped bbq sandwich and fried okra and I ordered the sliced bbq sandwich with a side of baked beans. The bbq here is chopped really fine. It loses any texture that way so I recommend the sliced. It costs more but I think its worth it. I couldn't really detect much smoke but I saw the wood stacked outside and the 3 large brick chimneys so it must be there right? The sauce on the table for the bbq was good. A very classic style vinegar pepper sauce. The baked beans are just ok so on my next visit I'll be sure to get something else. The okra was crispy and moist without being greasy so that's a plus. We drove a little ways to try this restaurant. We were really impressed about the food. When we arrived we walked in and was immediately greeted by a cashier and hostess. She sat us at a booth and a few seconds later the very friendly waitress was there greeting us. After we ordered it was 5 mins and she was coming out with our food! Totally shocked about the time frame this restaurant stands by. We ate and enjoyed every single bite. We ordered the bbq ribs (both pork and beef)... we have nothing bad to say. Don't get me wrong, Hursey's has some good Barbeque. As an Elon student, I've been here quite a few times to satisfy my craving for a chopped pig sandwich with coleslaw. The most recent time was a week ago with my roommate. We ordered in the drive through (which I didn't even know they had until then) to pick up some food to watch my Tar Heels take on the Blue Devils. What better way to watch a fierce Tobacco Road rivalry than with some good ole fashioned NC BBQ? I got two chopped BBQ sandwiches with slaw, a side of hush puppies and baked beans. The sandwiches were good, plenty of tender, juicy meat and a good amount of slaw. The baked beans had a nice flavor and surprised me in how good they were. My only complaint was with the hushpuppies. I LOVE hushpuppies. When I go to a BBQ joint and I see they have puppies, there's no question that there's going to be some on my plate. That being said, these hushpuppies didn't really impress me. While they weren't terrible, they didn't Wow me either. I like my puppies crispy and sweet, but this order was too greasy, which made them kind of soggy. This could have been because they were the take-out variety and had to sit in the car for a while before I ate them, but I was still slightly disappointed. You're giving Carolina BBQ a bad name folks. I was visiting a friend in Durham recently, and their apartment complex had lunch catered by Hurseys. I've been living in California for the past year, and I was excited to get some good Carolina bbq. Unfortunately, it was not to be had. The guy that had set up shop was super friendly, and brought quite the spread with him- chopped pork, fried chicken, hush puppies, slaw, beans, sweet tea and two desserts- banana pudding and peach cobbler. The good- Fried chicken was pretty good, though seemed a bit cold. Oh well, i'll eat fried chicken any way I can. The desserts were pretty damn stellar as well. The peach cobbler was super tasty and the banana pudding was loaded with nilla wafers. Let's be honest, it's not banana pudding without nilla wafers. I went back on got seconds on that. The bad- the man claimed that chopped pork is better than pulled pork. I beg to differ. While it was not bad per se, it was just ok, but what makes me say it was bad is the sauce. Where's the sauce? On the table he had what I thougth was bbq sauce, but instead looked to be a sweet and sour sauce. Sweet and sour sauce??? On bbq???? Hell to the no. The hush puppies seemed to be over cooked as well as they were pretty tough to chew through. And the sweet tea was not as sweet as I usually like it. Hursey's has always been one of my favorite stops for good BBQ, the parking lot is usually full & they always have a line at the drive-thru so they must be doing something right. What's even better than their BBQ is the Broasted Chicken. The broasted chicken is awesome, full of flavor & not greasy. The skin is the best part, it cooks crispy & golden brown while the meat stays moist & juicy, not like most regular fried chicken joints where the skin pulls off the chicken at first bite in one rubbery sheet with some fried breading on the outside of it. It's very easy to get hooked on their broasted chicken. I'm not a fan of their ribs however, I tried them once & that was enough. To me they seem like they were water logged from boiling all the flavor out of the meat, the only flavor came from the BBQ sauce they covered them in. There really wasn't any kind of crust or caramelization on the outside that suggested they were smoked. Big disappointment. If it weren't for the ribs I'd give them 5 stars. So if you're around Burlington & looking for some great BBQ & what could possibly be the best chicken you'll ever eat, swing by Hursey's. read more
