We've eaten at this Hursey's location a number of times and it's really hit or miss. If you get there while they are preparing the food and it's just made and hot, it's pretty good. We like the "broasted" chicken and the BBQ is usually acceptable. But the couple of times we've come mid afternoon or later in the evening around 8 or so, everything has been barely lukewarm. Today we ate at 2:30 and everything tasted like it'd been sitting there for hours--nothing was even heated up for us. The fries were cold and limp, the BBQ meat and chicken were barely warm, the crust on the chicken was soggy and tough, and even the hushpuppies were stale. They could do better. We'll go to the Burlington location if we want consistently good food. (I gave this location 2 stars because the person behind the counter was nice and the place was clean. I think this is my first time stopping in North Carolina for food; driving through the state for a trip. Saw advertisement for this place along the highway the last few dozen miles, and thought "I've never tried Carolina bbq.. sure why not" Absolutely mid. Meh. If I'm ever driving through again, won't try a different location. Ordered a #4 combo plate to try their "brosted chicken"(fried), 3 ribs, some sorta stew that had pulled pork in it, and pulled pork. No smoke flavor, the meat felt and tasted like it was baked/steamed, then covered with a tangy sauce to make up for the lack of flavor. Stew was served below lukewarm, ribs came off bone but were bland and chewy covered in a syrupy sauce , coleslaw was vinegar based cabbage-only meh, the chicken was alright.. Overall meh. I'm surprised they had awards from 98-'08 posted they were voted best BBQ. Maybe back when it was all made on an actual smoker before I blew into a chain? The girl at the counter was super friendly and was patient when we weren't sure what to order. The restaurant was very clean and neat. The food was good. The kids meal was a decent portion and the chicken wasn't the typical frozen tenders. It was actual fresh chicken and came with hush puppies and fries. Both sides were very tasty, fresh and hot. The max and cheese was very good consistency. My spouse had the pulled pork and he said it was alright. For his taste it was a little too mushy and lacked structure. Stopped off 85. one truck in front of us. We pulled up to order. Waited 10 minutes. Kept saying hello. Nothing. We drove up to window. Sat there and nothing. Never really liked their food. Two things recently pissed me off. Went to breakfast with a friend there. No French toast on the menu. Really?!! Picked up Seafood platter last night. Very little shrimp and it was overcooked. And they charge that ripoff "Supplemental fee" which has become popular with some restaurants. Highly highly highly recommend anyone stopping here driving by interstate 85! First the counter service is top notch! Miss Barbara was so patient with me and recommended combo plates and walked me through the different sides. Then the food came! Simply phenomenal! I got a combination plate of a chicken breast, half a rack of ribs, coleslaw, potato salad, mac & cheese, pulled chopped barbecue and Brunswick stew. All for only $17! Plus a large sweet tea. It is well worth the money! The fried chicken was fantastic, as the mac & cheese and potato salad were! My only complaint was the half a rack of ribs, they were definitely cooked to perfection falling off the bone however the barbecue sauce on them was too spicy for my taste buds. Had a road-trip dinner here last Friday. The regular size chopped BBQ tray (slaw and hush puppies) was plenty of food for me. The BBQ was good quality, chopped perfectly, clean, with no stomach-turning random bits of fat or inedibles that can find their way into BBQ if the guy doing the chopping is not vigilant. Although Hursey's says "wood smoked" I did not detect very much wood smoke flavor. The slaw was fresh and excellent and provided the perfect contrast in taste and texture to the Que. the house sauce is a bit unusual- it is a thickened, translucent, sweet but peppery sauce unlike any I have encountered at a NC BBQ joint. It reminded me of an Asian-inspired sweet chili sauce you might put on a stir-fry. Not bad, just weird. I guess it is part of their signature but I ended up just using the Texas Pete. You know you are in a legit NC BBQ place when there is a half-empty bottle of Texas Pete on the table. Service was friendly and efficient and the place was very clean and neat. This newest Hursey's Bar-B-Q restaurant opened in late January 2016 in a brand new stand alone site, on the other side of Mebane Oaks Road from the Smithfield Chicken & Barbecue location. This is the 5th restaurant location in the Burlington area, and there is a large wholesale operation near Elon College. The interior is bright & shiny with plenty of seating, and the fast food setup is much like its competitor across the street - you order at the front, where there are 2 or 3 manned registers, and the order is brought to your table. The food is basically the same here as at other locations - chopped BBQ, Broasted Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Ribs, Fried Flounder, Calasbash Style Shrimp, and Brunswick Stew, along with the standard sides of a BBQ joint. The menu here is a tad broader since they offer a Hot Dog and a Hamburger, which is not the case at all locations, and only the Graham spot serves breakfast. What is offered here is of the usual Hursey's quality, which in my opinion, is very good, pretty much across the board. I tried the hot dog here, and found it to be quite nice, and the BBQ Sandwich was excellent. The service here is really nice, because of the fast food setup - things move quickly, which is not always true in the ones that provide wait service, especially Graham. This place is paradise! I came here with my momma to escape the great heatwave of summer '19. It's nice and cool inside this confederate eatery lying just off I-40 in Mebane.
