It's the rare occasion when I get to visit a restaurant that was featured on the TV show "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives," and it's a true privilege. I don't take it lightly. I spent a lot of time preparing. My mom even made me a special outfit. Remember, in the movie Goodfellas, when Joe Pesci thought he was about to become a made guy? It was kind of like that. Fortunately, I wasn't led into an empty room where I was promptly shot in the back of the head. (Whew!) I was conscious of the potential for violence at Hwy 61 Roadhouse, because its name--and the overall vibe--calls to mind the classic Patrick Swayze movie from the 1980s, which was in fact set in Missouri. I was ready to punch my way out of there, if necessary. The crowd here skews older, and it occurred to me that I may have been able to take out quite a few of them on my own. There was live music, and the band called to mind something you might see in a circa-'97 Christopher Guest movie, or Marty and Bobbi Culp. It gets loud, to the point where you can't hear what the person across the table from you is saying. You might consider bringing a date here, if you'd prefer not having a conversation. A guy from my running group loves this place and spoke highly of the BBQ Spaghetti. Normally, I wouldn't eat anything like that, but this guy seems like he might know ball when it comes to delicious restaurant meals, if you catch my drift. Turns out, he wasn't wrong. It wasn't just good, this might be the way to eat pulled pork. I'd make it at home, except that store-bought barbecue sauce is disgustingly sweet and processed-tasting, and it wouldn't be worth trying to make my own. I toyed with the idea of getting a burger, which is a safe go-to in restaurants in areas where the spice level is often inquired about, but I've eaten so many of them lately. Then I saw that they carry a Shrimp Po Boy. It seemed like the perfect choice. Shrimp Po Boys are never not good, even the one they used to carry at Popeyes during Lent back in the pre-chicken sandwich era, and this place supposedly specializes in Cajun food. It didn't disappoint... for the most part. It was a bit bread-forward for my liking. Some places hollow out the bread a little bit, to make room for the fillings. Hwy 61 doesn't, and they use a weirdly large roll. I love bread, so this wouldn't necessarily be an issue, but there was nothing particularly special about this bread. They load you up on shrimp, which are fried hard, like chicken wings from a hood Chinese place. It makes for a satisfying crunch. The lettuce and tomatoes provided a fresh, healthy-seeming contrast, and the remoulade is just spicy enough to keep things interesting. I'm definitely curious to try some of the other menu items, including some of the more authentic Cajun selections--the etouffees, gumbos and what have you. If only I could get them to bring me a sampling of everything, "on the arm." I'd show up in backwards sunglasses and tell them I'm there filming a TV show, but alas, they've already been featured on a TV show, and I wouldn't want to run the risk of having to actually fight someone. read more

I got the Pulled Pork Supper. It is shredded pork, served on sourdough bread. I got it with BBQ spaghetti. The pork was a little tough and the portion was a little small for $17. The spaghetti was blander than I remember too. I thought the sauce used to be spicier. We'll have to give them another try. The restaurant is decorated with a fun vibe. We were there on a trivia night, but we were leaving as it was starting. It looked like fun. They also have a lot of live music too. read more

Well this was a go to for Cajun food.... The restaurant is still well decorated but the service is really slow, not friendly and the food quality has gone down hill. It took 20 minutes to get our food and there were only 2 other tables. We ordered dessert but cancelled it after waiting another 20 minutes and being told it was still in the oven! We had to look for our waitress to ask for refills by walking around the restaurant. The biggest bummer is we used to really enjoy the pork steak. The portion sizes are really small now. While the menu states 12 ounces, the pork steaks were both small, thin and tough to cut and chew. Unless some improvements are made, we won't be back! read more

We've been here a few times and decided to come back with some friends. It seems like the quality of the food has gone down. It started off when we ordered onion rings for an appetizer and was so disappointed. They were just frozen onion rings. I would've thought that a place like this would've been homemade. The pulled pork was a bit tough and the barbecue ribs definitely did not fall off the bones. The corn casserole and the macaroni and cheese was really good. They did have trivia going on and they do have live music certain days so you might want to check their calendar to see what's going on before you head our way. read more

This past visit to Hwy 61 Roadhouse in Webster Groves I discovered a new favorite dish that is the beef brisket sandwich that was cheesy, meaty and delectable. This wasn't my first rodeo at Hwy 61 Roadhouse and there's things I like that keep me coming back but there's a few things I don't like as much such as the smoked chicken plate I ate on a previous visit and so deducting one star for my review. Things I love there are: cheeseburgers, BBQ Sampler entree, onion rings, wings, red beans n rice, and smoked spaghetti as a side dish although I probably wouldn't order as an entree. Dishes I don't like much as much are the aforementioned smoked fried chicken, gumbo, and jambalaya that's okay but had better elsewhere. But this place to me is one of the coolest restaurant spaces in the Lou with lots of memorabilia, a Guy Fieri DDD endorsement, and many years ago I use to shop there when it was a Streetside Records store. We had the place to ourselves. My cocktail was very good and the food was okay. The coleslaw was almost flavorless though. I brought it home thinkin' my husband could maybe fix it up enough to eat. I also ordered the Cajun Potstickers to share with the table, but they were greeeeeasy! Not worth the price ($13!). I had the Cajun Chicken sandwich, but with no bun or bread. It was pretty tasty. Upon walking in we were greeted right away. The inside is completely amazing!! The decor is so cool, and gave the kids something cool to explore. It's been a minute since I've eaten here, and let's just say my taste buds were ready for a parade but got stuck in traffic. The hurricanes somehow tasted like someone muddled them with a whiff of marijuana. Not quite the buzz I was expecting. Even with half price wine night, $9 a glass felt overpriced. The catfish, though, still a solid choice you can't go wrong, but the mac & cheese was a miss. (Literally) Not only did it arrive about 10 minutes after the rest of the food but it showed up grainy and underwhelming. The décor still some of the best in STL. Let's start with the good. I was with a party of 9 to celebrate a birthday. The murals on the walls are beautiful and the decor was nice. Customer service was great. I was excited that there was live music. I ordered a Hurricane to drink. I was disappointed with the lack of alcohol in this drink. For dinner I had the Mississippi Fish & Chips and the Big Sophia mac & cheese. It was just okay. The wife and I chose this establishment for date night because we wanted music with our dining. Music was good. Apps were mixed (good onion rings although skimpy on the dipping sauce) but the shrimp were a strange rubbery texture. I had the spaghetti, which was large enough to take part home, but the sauce was really sweet. After our entrees were delivered we didn't see our server again until the bill was given to us. Such a cute looking spot!!! Love the inside and the decor. Super unique and lots of things to look at and admire. The waitress took our order relatively quickly but the food took forever to come out (roughly 30-40 mins) and we were the only ones in the restaurant! But that's ok. I got the jambalaya cup. It was ok. Rice was a little mushy and mine wasn't hot. Just warm. However my friend got the shrimp pasta and it was freaking amazing and hot!!! I would definitely recommend that instead!!! I went last night with my 2 20 something boys. First of all, there was a music trivia going on for which we were thankful because it took about an hour to get our food. There was one group of 17 therefore the trivia and other than that, I think we were the only other customers. The food was just OK. I had chicken smothered in a cream sauce with shrimp and crawfish. It was good but nothing to write home about. My son had the Cajun sampler which as he said he could've made better. And my other son had pulled pork dinner. I had decided before we even went that I was going to order the banana pudding, but after it had taken so long to get our dinner, I decided I better not. This was the family pick for Easter brunch this year. This was my first time visiting. I was very excited to try the food. I visit New Orleans once a year and love creole and Cajun food. The space gives dive bar vibes, lots of Mardi Gras paraphernalia. There are high tops and regular tables. Definitely a good space for a large group. Our server was prompt and friendly. The food was somewhat disappointing. Again, I have good familiarity with Cajun and creole cooking. The food was missing a little something. The brunch buffet offered several of regular menu items: chicken, fish, red beans and rice etc and they were just ok. There was also traditional brunch fare. This "Cajun" menu was designed by white people, for white people. It was beyond bland. The burger. Over cooked, tough, and had zero flavor. The peel and eat shrimp. What a shame. Decent quality product that was ruined. Sure, it was overcooked... But seasoning? Forget about seasoning the water, they didn't even salt it! Then the bartender runs up with a plastic cup of something and says "they forgot this" and sprinkled it on one side of the shrimp shell (that is getting peeled off". Point is, the shrimp taste like rubber and tap water. The coleslaw. I can think of 2 times in my life that I spit something out! That stuff is not even bland, it's just gross! The bartender was kind though! Either way, this place is not worth a visit. Not worth your time, and I'll be damned if I'll ever give it another shot. Moral of the story, I want my money back! This was our first visit to HWY 61 Roadhouse. We sat at the bar and experienced the most incredible service from Jamie. That woman is amazing! She was working hard all night and makes the most delicious cocktails! The food was even more amazing! We had the sampler appetizer (the tamales were ) , salad with the Cajun herb dressing, Cajun sampler and Bourbon chicken with their famous Mac n' cheese. Everything was so so good! I'm a foodie but I'm also fair and give grace. This place fell completely short and I will not be returning. I ordered the fried oysters and they were bland and a textural nightmare and extremely bland. I also had the Brussel sprouts. They had major potential because of the toppings but they were boiled or steamed and that just isn't the best combination for what they topped them with but i ate them because I could not handle the oysters at all. We have been going to the Tuesday night music bingo and let me tell you it's a blast!! The food has improved so much and it actually back to where it was when it originally opened. I would highly recommend the wings, the toasted ravs and my husband loves the smothered catfish. Cocktails have been tasty with my favorite being the margaritas and the cranberry mule is a good choice as well. The music bingo is so fun and engaging and the service has been terrific. The last time we went we had Mildred as our server and she was THE BEST. She was fun and attentive without crowding us. Such a disappointment - while the gumbo was good (a bit too much rice), it stopped there. Took over 10 minutes for anyone to greet us, then our server didn't know the menu (said entry unless specified comes with a side). The etouffee was very thick and had tiny shrimp and no crab. Was borderline gross.so thick and clumpy. The server never checked on how the how was and when my husband said his was not good and left most of it (when clearing the table) she didn't say anything. You know, through the years, I've visited sporadically and in general, I've always enjoyed the visit. Typically in the evening there is music and the place and pretty packed. This visit, Saturday afternoon, around 12p, not too crowded, so seated pretty quickly. The menu has certainly changed over the years. Today I went with the Fish and Chips, catfish and waffle fries if you will. I was advised that the fish was the fillets, not the Nuggets, but hmmmm, they certainly didn't eat as if they were fillets. Do you know why it was a blast to be at the Roadhouse this Friday night!!!? CLASSIC ALTERNATIVE MUSIC FROM THE 70s-00s performed by 120 Minutes (MTV fans will know the reference)! Oh, and the food, drinks and service were pretty darn good for a crowded evening. We met up with some music loving friends to have some dinner and enjoy music. Weeks ago, I used the website to submit a reservation using their online form. After submitting the info, it didn't quite seem like it went through. A couple weeks went by before I couldn't resist it any longer... I called in and figured out how to navigate the many prompts to talk to a person. I learned that they start confirming reservations the week of the reservation. So, be patient is the lesson. Anywho, we had a table reserved in the bar area. Staffing was tough - one bartender... one bar area server and a couple runners and a bar back. Still, they did a good job. Our server was friendly and effective. We weren't served super fast, but we didn't expect it and the music and atmosphere was entertaining. The drinks were decent... probably a 3.5. No Vierre Carre (my favorite New Orleans drink), but we had a decent Sazerac. We later shared a Swamp Water (nice melon flavor, but a tad sweet - expectedly) and a Rum runner. We tried to drink the hurricane but found it to sweet for our liking... the mix was just a tad strong for us. Dinner brought on a number of items. Our table enjoyed a couple barbecue pork dishes, but I found the pre-sauced bbq to be not to my liking. I had a "cup" (aka small bowl) of gumbo. The roux based sauce was nicely textured. I found the spice to be mild, but others would call it medium. Overall, I found the gumbo to be okay... I would have liked more sausage and served hotter over better cooked rice. The rice seemed to be par cooked - not 100% sure - but that's my hunch. Overall, it was good value and okay. Furthermore, I had a side of okra. It was definitely prepared fresh with a homemade cornmeal batter. The Cajun dressing was excellent for dipping the okra. On top of the two sides, I had a salad - pretty average house salad. The cornbread muffin served with the salad was tasty, but a tad dry and crumbly. We finished our meal with shared large piece of bread putting. The glaze and the sauce were very tasty, but I feel that the bread to sauce/glaze ration was a tad off. Also, the outside was nice and hot, but the inside was mostly room temperature. I really struggled with picking the right rating. Overall, I feel like they did a better job than many restaurants I've been to lately when it comes to dealing with a crowded establishment and tough staffing levels. Hwy 61 Roadhouse was a pleasant surprise the first time we visited. It was very busy, we did not have a reservation but the staff said as long as we were out by 7pm we could be sat right away. We hesitated at first but overall didn't feel rushed. As we ordered and ate a band was setting up to start, a cover charge is taken at the door if you stay for the music. Food wise; I thought I knew what to expect thinking typical BBQ but they put a creole twist on southern style food. My husband's favorite is the Smoked Fried Chicken and we've been back multiple times since specifically for it. You get a ton of food, we always have leftover to take home. Would not accommodate us walking in with a party of 8 including one person in our group being handicap. We were told that if we had made a reservation then we would be helped. There were hardly any people in the building & not busy at all. Practically empty. They offered us high tables or up the stairs. Again, I told the host & floor manager that one of our group can not physically do either. They then said they could probably seat us in the section that the reservation is for but they will start coming in in 30 min. So we would be rushed. Then said they can split us up. Not doing that. The fact that they were refusing to accommodate a handicap person is against the law & ADA & acted like they did not want to take us at all is completely disrespectful & horrible customer service. Came here for a show last night. Band was great, but the restaurant charges you a cover fee just for sitting near them. Had to pay $10 per person. The food was alright. The corn soufflé was to die for, as well as the shrimp po'boy. However, I do not recommend the voodoo sandwich. It is kind of whatever for the price, and came with a few wilted pieces of lettuce. Warmly greeted and offered a table in the bar area with immediate seating, my waitress took great care of me and ensure that I had everything I needed. I started off with a beer and and order of their smoked wings with the voodoo hot sauce. Very nice to see wings not swimming in a wet sauce, this was a pile of wings with the ranch and hot sauce on the side. Fabulous and the wings were very good. Not quite stuffed, I decided to step out of ketosis for one of the DDD dishes. The BBQ Spaghetti was interesting - hot al dente pasta in a tangy barbecue sauce mixed with pulled pork. Tasty but light on the meat. The "B Side" portion is a good portion for a side dish. Thankfully, I got in and out before the trivia and/or live music started. I know people love that stuff. I don't. Overall, a good experience with attentive wait staff in a comfortable (somewhere between raucous and rowdy) restaurant and good eats. We had not been to HWY 61 in years, so was nearby and stopped in for lunch. So very disappointing. The service was good, the food, not so much. NOTHING had any taste whatsoever. The crab sticks were way too chewy and overcooked. I initially ordered the shrimp/chicken étouffée. Zero taste and the roux was way too thick - totally inedible. The Mississippi catfish ordered by my husband, undercooked, no crust and again no taste. I should have known better, but ordered a catfish sandwich with green beans. Was given fries, green beans did come out, but by then, finished with eating just 1/2 of the sandwich. Soooooooo here we go!!!!! We decided to do a DDD (Diners, drive-ins and Dive tour for our anniversary and this place popped up for St. Louis. Just by looking at the picture alone made me want to try it!!!!!! The restaurant is extremely welcoming and we were one of the first guest on Saturday!! The portions are HUGE so you will not leave hungry. The smothered catfish was a HIT i couldn't stop eating it!!! If your looking for a place for some good creole food and like spicy then THIS IS YOUR PLACE!!!!! Oooohhhh and I told the waitress what we were doing and she offered some complimentary Cajun potstickers that were AMAZING!!! Get you tail up and GO!!!!!! read more
