Stopped in on a Saturday for lunch before a show at the Oriental. The variety of pizzas by the slice here is crazy. Sure, there is your traditionals, but then there is macaroni and cheese pizza, baked penne pizza, buffalo cauliflower pizza, cheesy potato and ranch, drunken ravioli and so many more. I opted for a slice of Smokey the Bandit, which has BBQ Sauce, Mozzarella, Dry Rubbed Chicken, BBQ Sauce, Cheddar, Bacon, & Ranch. My daughter went with a classic pepperoni slice. Plus, we ordered a bag of their gluten-friendly puppy chow. While we waited for our slices to heat up, we noticed the playlist was rocking and the staff were singing along. Ian's Pizza is a 'by the slice' pizza place. The slices are pretty big and worth the price. I loved the feel of the place. There is a lot of cool art to look at that decorste the walls. They have a variety of special pizza slices you can choose from. It took me a minute to take in all the options and the worker was very patient explaining what some of their favorites were. I ended up getting a slice of the Mac and cheese (what they are known for) and the smoky bandit. My friend got the penne Alfredo and cheesy potato. I also ended up ordering a garlic bread and a half Cesaer salad. We dined in and I was enjoying every bite of my food. I loved the flavors of the different pizzas and how creative they get into blending the ingredients so it pairs well. They had a few pizzas that I wanted to try so I'll definitely have to make a trip back to Milwaukeee for some. The Cesaer salad was huge for a side portion but was worth it. I'm not use to eggs being included with a Caesar but I'm not mad at it. The garlic bread looks amazing but if you need to skip out on something you could forgo that. It was just okay. I will always have a warm spot in my heart for Ian's, the pizza delivered to us in the protests against Act 10 in Madison. To me, this pizza tastes like justice. But pizza, like justice, is best fresh out of the oven, so what you want do at this location is ask which pizza was most recently made or is there a pizza coming out very soon. It's a nice place to eat in, but you have to be ready to climb the stairs. They have some old school arcade games so get your quarters before going up. I'm not a big fan of macaroni and cheese as a pizza but if you've never had the experience you should try it at least once in your life. A friend recommended this place so we stopped in before they closed for the night. Not many slices to pick from probably cause they're closing, but they do mention on their menu if you don't see it, ask and they'll make it happen. Got a variety of slices including two plain. Pizza wasn't bad at all but I have a massive pet peeve when they don't bring the sauce and cheese all the way to the edge. It left this giant border for a crust, which I left behind. Staff I engaged with was pretty friendly. You can tell they enjoy the work they do, which was good to see. Atmosphere is pretty loud which is understandable for the amount of people stopping in. One of the pizza makers (maybe owner/supervisor) stood up on a platform to elevate himself to patrons and announced they were closing for the night. Solid pizza place with creative offerings. Street parking was easy to find. The smell inside was *amazing*. There were several fresh pies. and a few tired, older looking pizzas in the window. One of my kids really wanted the sausage Alfredo (one of the older looking pies), and I was surprised at how well it perked back up after a trip in the "revival" warming oven. There were so many unique offerings, I had a difficult time deciding which one to simple. I wish there was a 50/50 slice for us indecisive folk, but the woman behind the counter was helpful and offered some suggestions to guide me on my way. There were even a few vegan offerings (nice touch!) HUGE salads - and lots of options there too, including a build your own. Same with the pizza - If Mac and cheese or taco weren't your style, you could totally DIY one. The crust was really crisp on the bottom. bordering on almost burnt, which I kind of enjoyed. It was nice and sturdy. The dough itself was chewy, and more yeasty than sourdough-y, which Is pretty good at this price point. The sauce was flavorful and plentiful on my slice (tomato, fresh mozzarella, and basil - so skimping here - impressive). We also tried the drunken ravioli (cheese ravioli and a flavorful sauce), pep and cheese (kids), sausage Alfredo, a greek salad (HUGE portion - a bit too much dressing for my taste, but that's me being a snob! most people would like it that way). Breadsticks - pretty standard here. Puppy chow - WHAT? Are you kidding me? I did not need it, but could not resist. The little also insisted on the fruity pebbles rice Krispy treat - no survivors on dessert. Overall, good value, solid pizza, nice variety, very unique offerings. Seating area here was fairly small and shaped a little awkwardly (some Ninja-Tetris moves required to get in and out of our booth with the table next to us). Staff were super friendly. Mac N' Cheese Pizza: Ian's first opened in Madison, WI in 2001 near my alma mater. Ian wanted to create a late-night, pizza-by-the-slice venue. It's said that while in college and working at a pizza joint, Ian began making plans for his own restaurant after a trip to Italy. I vaguely recall having Ian's once after a late night excursion, but that was about a decade ago. Ian's has since expanded to Milwaukee, Denver, and Seattle. The opportunity arose recently to try Ian's, so I went for it. I had to know if it was as good sober as it was after a night of college partying. The slice is about the size of a standard paper plate and is New York Style thin crust. The M.N.C. pizza comes with creme, Mozzarella, mac noodles, & Cheddar. I thought the crust had a nice flavor and for a thin crust it was fine, not to firm or to flimsy (I'm still team pan style). There was plenty of cheese to keep me happy and a moderate amount of noodles. The noodles were not cheese flavored, but buttery. The "creme" was sadly laking resulting in a dry pizza that would have benefited with some type of cheese sauce.Even though this is the slice Ian's is best known for, in my post-grad years I've experienced better (Pizza Shuttle's take on the mac n cheese pizza is phenomenal). So far my favorite has been Blackened Blue Burger but I'm currently waiting on the Cochin Pibil to release in April 19th. They obviously have classics and I can always go for a slice of pepperoni. I also enjoy their staples like buffalo chicken. They have several vegsn options and salads. If you get there before bar close they serve beer but there is also soda and gatorade. They offer specialty rice krispy treats like animal cookie, caramel apple, red velvet, birthday cake, etc. This is a hot spot for late night but be aware that the latter you do, the more likely your favorite slices will sell out. We came in and it was pretty empty, so we had time to look through the choices. I wanted to try something new and special. I got the Smokey the Bandit and absolutely loved it! It was balanced, a bit salty, but the sauce on top was great. I really enjoyed the restaurant itself and the food. The crust is the perfect chewy and crispy, a great thickness, and topped with quality toppings. I crave this every time I look at pictures and when I'm craving pizza, but I'm sad I'm about 8 hours away! I think the biggest draw with the pizza is the topping options. Ian's serves up some wild topping combos - think battered tilapia with French fries. I can't recommend the mac and cheese slice enough. So tasty! Another great aspect of Ian's is you can buy pizza by the slice. We grabbed a few and headed over to Deer District to gobble some down before a Bucks game at one of the public-use tables. A move we would pull again. Prices and wait time were reasonable. It was hard to hear the employee with the glass walls and masks so be prepared to speak up. Also, there is no dining-in here now. The place when you go in is exactly what you're hoping it's going to be - somewhere to get a ton of food for not a whole lot of money and a place to stuff all of it in your face. I've had five or six of their pizza varieties recently and when I went in last I got a slice of their ravioli pizza and a slice of their mac and cheese pizza and I recommend both wholeheartedly. Ian's has to be a 5/5! Great pizza and a cool atmosphere! Pizza is the best food. Everyone knows this. But Ian's puts a nice spin on this with their selection of non-traditional pizzas! Mac and cheese, gyro, buffalo chicken, tomato pesto, and many more! Most of which are delicious! Obviously they still have the classic cheese, pepperoni, and sausage as well. All of this pizza is served by the slice if you walk in without a pre order. Other wise you can also call in a takeout order of a whole pie of your favorite za! Worth noting is that they always have vegan slices available on the far right side of the pizza bar! It doesn't end at pizza though there is also a salad bar which looks really good! They also have breadsticks and puppy chow for desert. Overall a good place to have a few slices of pizza with friends. College was awhile ago, I'm grown up and I pay my bills on time and all that, but sometimes I still find myself spare-change-scrapingly broke. At times like those I'm prone to seek out the best caloric bang for my buck. Concerns about eating healthy tend to fly out the window, and I definitely want to fill up on carbs. Ian's is pretty good for that. The pizza is tasty and filling, and comes in some fairly interesting flavor combinations. And yes, there's plenty of superior pizza in Milwaukee, but Ian's fills a certain niche--maybe you're scrounging in your couch cushions or the bottom of your purse, or maybe it's 1AM and near everything else is closed. It's there in your time of need. I've ordered delivery a few times and never had any real issues other than getting the wrong salad one time. I like their Caesar, though I'm a fan of boiled eggs which not everyone is. A 16" cheese pizza is a pretty good deal and makes 2 or 3 meals for one person. But when I go to the restaurant I'm all about slices. Call it a spontenaiety thing. I may never totally be down with pasta on pizza--it doesn't taste bad, it's just a little over-the-top in terms of carbs on carbs, even if the whole trip was all about carbs in the first place. I had a good tomato pesto slice once, and I was really surprised how much I liked the one with salmon and asparagus (Gus & Sal). I also like that a lot of the signature pies are vegetarian, and that the veggies get as much creativity in preparation as the meat combos.
