Ok Madison, I see you. Was looking up places to check out on a recent stop to Madison, and came upon this place. Who doesn't love a good slice? AMBIANCE - situated on one of the main drags of downtown, this place definitely had a college staple vibe to it, though we did see a number of families in here while we were dining. Adequate seating and fairly clean, I can see this place getting packed during the school year. SERVICE - people working the counter were very friendly, and made a few recommendations on which slices we should try. While we did stray from some of their recommendations, they got our order out hot and fast. MENU - I love pizza joints like this - sell by slice with a number of both classic and creative takes on pizza. They also have rotating special slices. I think we just missed their July 4th specials, but they had plenty of other options to choose from. FOOD - we ended up going with a macaroni and cheese slice, as well as a bbq chicken ranch pizza. considering my kids had just eaten a meal, you would have never known as they finished the majority of both slices. While the bbq chicken was good, the star was the mac and cheese pizza. My one son declared this the best thing he had in Madison ("that's high praise"). I had never eaten at this location but we were downtown for a Historic Trust walking tour and needed a quick early dinner. As with their Garver location there were about a dozen pies to choose from - most of them are a bit too weird for my taste so I just stuck with a classic like pepperoni and mushroom. Though reheated the large slices were very tasty. $5-$6 a slice. They also have salads and some other snack items. Unlike at Garver they do not have beer - makes sense given the State Street location - I am sure they do this to reduce their headaches. A good slice at a good price. read more

We so enjoyed returning to Ian's as it been about 10 years since our last visit. Everyone is so friendly! We enjoyed our Caesar side salads and three out of the four pizza slices that we ordered. We would've come back again if we'd have been in town longer. read more

Ian's pizza was pretty good. Pizza was good but not great. The dough and toppings were not warmed through and could have definitely used more time in the oven. I was also disappointed that there were no slices of pepperoni, or anything with pepperoni at all. Sadness making for sure. We have the Mac and cheese; the veggie delight; the chicken, bacon and ranch; and the pesto and tomato. The flavors were there for sure!!! I remember moving out of madison I'd never tried ians and when my friends would talk about it I'd think to myself dang I wish i'd gotten to try some of these crazy pizzas. Then I moved to seattle and I got whiplash when I walked past an ians. I looked it up and lo and behold, a random ians in seattle. Perfect I though, I'll finally have a chance to try. And then I never went and it closed down. WELL now i'm back in madison and I wasn't about to pass this ip. So yeah we got a bunch of crazy slices (never would I ever have thought I'd have ravioli on a pizza and probably never will I again). Ian's offers NYC style pizza by the slice. Good hand tossed crust on all pies. The Mac-n-cheese pizza was featured on The Food Network so I tried that and a slice of their Mexican/Taco pizza. I actually wsnt wowed by the Mac-n-cheese. Kinda bland. Needed some hot sauce to give it some taste. The Mexican pizza on the other hand was insanely delicious. Easily the best slice of pie with that theme I've ever had. Really good seasoning and ingredients on that one. Get that one ! Didn't expect much from a pizza chain with pasta on top of their slices, but that was my mistake. The mac n' cheese pizza was bomb. I thought it would be soggy or too cheesy, but it was neither. The crust held up like a champ and was even crispy. The mac was just right. I regret not trying another flavor, but at least I got some fresh breadsticks with stellar marinara sauce. I'd like to first say the staff are wonderful, however, I found the pepperoni pizza to be unpleasant. In my opinion, it was heavy on the cheese. For my taste, I recommend putting more sauce and removing some of the cheese. My main reason for writing this 2/5 star review is because I'm not happy to see the direction this company is going. When I first heard of Ians it was described as a Madison staple, a community oriented restaurant. However, they're starting to open locations elsewhere like in Iowa. I feel as if Ians is going down the franchise route similar to companies like Dominoes and Pizza Hut. Huge companies like these destroy local businesses in the area they enter and often shift away from being focused on supporting the communities they exist in. We came here for a slice of pizza on our food tour with Madison Eats- the vibe was super fun and the pizza was definitely unique but delicious. Visiting WI it only felt right to try the Mac and Cheese pizza- I was honestly pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Super good! We got to try 4 different slices. Great service, people are super nice and helpful. Mac and cheese: 8/10, great crust, super cheesy, has a white sauce. Pretty balanced and not too doughy-starchy. I would eat right away Bbq chicken: 8.5:10, good! Sweet, savory, has a tiny kick. Potato cheese: 5/10, not my favorite but still hits. Really yummy casual spot for big pizza slices. I shared 3 slices with my mom and we were stuffed. Shockingly, my favorite was the spinach feta pizza. BBQ chicken was a close second. The Mac and cheese pizza was a must since it's Wisconsin and definitely hit the spot. All the pizza slices were crispy and oozing with cheese. Stopped in for a slice of pizza in the afternoon. The service was quick, you order in line and the pizza is heated up in an oven and ready for pickup at the counter within a couple minutes. Lunch time and wanting a snack, I found Ian's and thankfully, they sell pizza by the slice. Since this is Wisconsin, it's got to be cheese and cheese and more cheese, so I opted for the pizza with macaroni and cheese on top. Sounds weird, tastes awesome. We were exhausted from exploring Madison and rain was coming so we opted for delivery pizza. I had searched Yelp prior to our trip and found that Ian's is a Madison must-have and luckily for us, it was a stone's throw from our hotel and it delivered! I popped online and ordered a 'All the Veg', 'Supreme', cheese pizza, a few Ian's House Side Salad and a order of nine side sticks with three sauces. I consider myself a breadstick connoisseur. It is one of my most favoritest foods ever. And let me tell you, Ian's sticks don't disappoint. Honestly, next time I am in Madison I'll get a side salad and an entire order of sticks for myself. Boom. Also, while my crew wasn't down with trying the cheesy potato pizza, macho nacho or drunken ravioli za-- I am intend to try some of these off the wall signatures! I am sure they are delightful because let me tell you, even Ian's sauces were clutch. The Zesty Marinara was indeed that. The Green Chile Ranch was something I never knew I needed. Ian's Famous Ranch... let's just say I could see why it was famous. And finall the Bacon Queso-- wowza. We ordered around 7 on a Sunday. It came in an hour. Food was fresh. Pricing seemed on point. I tried Ian's Pizza on a whim, and I'm really glad I did. I have a hard time with dairy, and I was happy when I found a local pizza joint that offers dairy-free cheese. I decided to order the "All Veg" with pepperoni and vegan cheese, and it was delicious. There were a ton of veggies on it, probably 2-3 servings on a small, and the crust was also really, really good too. The size of the pizza was also a good value for the price. I ate this pizza as I was driving home to Minneapolis, but I did appreciate the interior; it has the sort of ambiance that pizza places did in the 90's, and it's definitely kid friendly. Update: I returned here for an in person experience before a comedy event at the Orpheum just down the block. We had a salad, split some pizza, had sodas. The slices are undoubtedly huge, we were very full. I was surprised at how good the salad was, pizza places are not always great with a delicious salad. This place was awesome. This lively pizza joint is right in the middle of downtown Madison, and the food does not disappoint. Came here with my wife and kid, who is 14 for a quick bite before a show. The side has table seating where you seat yourself. You then proceed to wait in line to order. You first pass a salad option and while we did not order salad, it looked yummy. You then get to the main show.....the pizza! There are so many options to choose from and the line is usually long. Took us 20 min to order and then another 8-10 min for the food to come out of the oven. After you place your order you wait to be called to pick it up, then you sit and eat. We had the Mac and cheese slice (daughter) and a sausage and pepperoni slice (wife and I). All slices are huge and is New York style. All and all, really great stop. Keep in mind, I am from NYC, and a pizza snob. It is hard for the to recommend non-NYC pizza places. While nothing compares to NYC pizza, this was awesome. Go. Here. Now read more

I had a slice of the Smokey the Bandit pizza and a breadstick. Both were very good! For being a really busy night before a show at the Overture, the line moved pretty quick. The downsides were seating was hard to come by and we really wanted Mac & Cheese pizza which had a long wait. Will be back to give it a try though! read more

Was in the area for the weekend & after going out for the evening, we stumbled upon here around 2a. We saw the massive line inside & figured it had to be worth it & good! Prior to our visit, we had a couple of our friend's recommend this place as well. They sell pizza by the slice of $4/per slice, or you can buy whole pies. Now I don't really eat pizza like that, but I do enjoy having fire roasted, less crust from time to time & when we saw the different toppings & variety they had, we had to try. Hubby & I initially were going to just grab a slice eat as their slices are decently portioned, but when we arrived to order, we couldn't help but try others since we aren't from the area & didn't know when we would be back. We had some sort of pesto alfredo, some sort of hawaiian, I forgot one other one & then there was the pho pizza. My goodness! This was amazing. What a creation. I was very impressed as I like to eat pho & how much turning it into a pizza was just phenomenal. This was their special for a few weeks I believe, but maybe they should consider making it an everyday menu item! Lots of UW student life videos mention Ian's. The tour guide mentioned Ian's. Everyone seems to go nuts over mac and cheese pizza. Well, okay, but... They do have lots of crazy slices here. // Mac and Cheese Their signature crazy. It looks and tastes like, well, mac and cheese, on a pizza. The crust is nice and crunchy, with a sweet tasting edge. The sauce was nice. And they reheat it in the oven when they cut you a slice, so the top is warm and golden brown. // Smokey the Bandit Your standard bbq chicken concoction. It looked really good behind the glass, but my slice had like two hunks of chicken. The rest tasted good, but I was hoping for more protein. // Maui Wowie Pineapple and ham, plus jalapenos. Lots of jalapenos. Good, but my dining companion questions the $5 per slice value there. // Macho Nacho This one comes with little tortilla strips, that were crunchy. It was like a taco on a pizza. But the "house made chorizo"? What's the point of house made if there's so few chunks you can barely see it. // Drinks They do have a nice selection of local sodas. I chose a Sprecher Fire Brewed Cream Soda. They also have a root beer, for next time. And the badger cherry soda. Plus they have a standard coke machine. Stopped by to eat some food before going home. Was in Madison for the Crossfit games, and we decided to stay for dinner before going home to our air bnb that didn't really have much to eat. This place is pretty good- come here if you want some specialty pizzas. I'm more of a traditional gal- and would rather eat a good cheese NY style pizza, but I love the novelty of all the pizzas here, and honestly, they taste great. We all got our own pizzas but was able to try a bite of other people's. So if you like specialty pizzas, then this place is great! It's pizza by the slice so you really can try a few different ones. They had ravioli pizza and chicken alfredo pizza as well- again, not really my favorites as I like traditional pizza better. With that said, I got a slice of the mac and cheese pizza and that was bomb. I bet this place would slap after a night of drinking, though. I ended up getting a salad here and it was AMAZING. I don't remember what I put in, but it was my twist on a greek salad. Was in Madison for a quick layover and had dinner here with some friends. The pizza slices are really big portions. I was so stuffed after 2. I tried the Mac and cheese one which was ok and a mushroom pepperoni one which was delicious. I also tried the breadsticks which were really good. Great pizza, open late, nice decor. Pulled into Madison after midnight, cruised State Street with the dog and found Ian's Pizza with a a good sized late night crowd. Sausage and Pepperoni was excellent, particularly loved their sausage. Taco pizza was great too. Nice and fun modern LED colored lighting and stickers on all the pillars. Great atmosphere. I got the Margherita and added some red pepper flakes to spice it up a bit. Definitely picture many college kids hitting up Ian's after a night out. Perfect End! Service is speedy, but it can be difficult for the employees to hear you - so speak up. Additionally, there were no labels on the pizza when we went.
