Probably the best sushi place in Austin. A little out of the way but it's a nice place. I eat sushi a fair amount and I can tell the fish is quite fresh and the sushi chefs know what they're doing. The open flamed candle they have on the tables caught my purse on fire! and when I asked for the manager the waitress, Gloria, said he wasn't there and that it was my fault so there was nothing she could do! We come here twice a week or more. Sushi is good (as it should be at any restaurant!) But the service here really shines. They seat you fast, to-go orders are fast and I never have to wait around for a bill. They have taken a liking to my daughter and one sushi chef made her a bear out of a sliced orange - super cool and appreciated. Love! Love! Love this place!!! Have only ever had the sushi, sashimi and rolls, but my wife and I can attest; If you are looking for higher quality fish, this is your place. The Fatty Salmon and Toro were higher quality cuts, as was the rest of our Nigiri order. The rolls range from traditional (been there, done that) to exotic and flavorful. We had Ichiban Playboy, Lovey Dovey and Volcano. All were incredibly tasty and well thought out. If you like Eel, the Ichiban roll is definitely for you. Volcano was served hot with a little fire gel accompaniment which was nice. Lastly the arrangements of rolls and nigiri is completely off the hook! Love the artistry. I was in the area for work looking for a quick lunch and Ichiban showed up on Yelp. When I walked in I was instantly greeted. It was very awesome how nice the staff at Ichiban are because you don't see that often. It seemed like the staff genuinely liked working here so that's always a good sign. I'm a fan of bento boxes since they're basically meals with a little bit of everything with your protein, carbs, and veggies. I got the chicken teriyaki and it didn't disappoint. Another favorite thing of mine are chirashi bowls and the one here did not disappoint. The price is also very good for a chirashi. The fish is fresh here and they do a good job with presentation. Good sushi for the price. The nigiri pieces are huge and definitely makes you feel like you get your money's worth. During happy hour you can get a pot of sake for $12 as well as an array of other nigiri/dishes at a discounted price. I also really like the wooden "booths" you can sit in, and it really elevates my experience at the restaurant. I came to Austin with my boyfriend on a business trip and we came across this restaurant. I looked it up and after reading the reviews we decided to give it a try especially because it stated online they closed at 10 pm and we knew we would be getting in around 9. We arrived at 9:20pm and was told they where only doing "take out" because they close in 40 mins. My boyfriend decided we will still order "take out" but while he was ordering the male guy taking his order was rushing him to order because again they where closing at 10. At this point we just wanted to order and get to our hotel. When we finish paying my boyfriend made sure to ask for soy sauce, napkins & chop sticks because we had a feeling they wouldn't do it. This is a belated review from last Thursday evening when we went to Ichiban for the first (and last) time. Strolling up, we had high hopes because there was a nice koi stream and the restaurant's interior was homey and simple, which we like. And then three or four servers walked by, saw us at the hostess stand, and...nothing. No greeting, no "we'll be right with you", nothing. They definitely seemed understaffed for the crowd, but still, throw a customer service bone. After we finally got sat, things didn't improve much. It took forever for our beers to come out (one was the wrong order) and the small salad that we put in to start arrived later with an entree. We figured that the food would make up for the lack of hospitality but alas no. The dynamite and ichiban rolls didn't taste particularly fresh, and the bibimbap was just plain boring. 2.5 stars, rounding up. Pretty disappointing and we won't be back. read more

Sadly, this place has the worst sushi I've eaten in years. Recently moved back to Austin, and this place is nearby, so we stopped by. Don't bother with the nigiri. The fish is ok (we ordered a variety, including unagi, escolar, mackerel, salmon, etc.), but they make the rice super sweet. I've never had such sweet sushi rice before, and every bite tasted like eating a mouthful of sugar. Completely covered up the taste of the fish (which wasn't too flavorful to begin with). The garlic edamame appetizer was plentiful and fragrant but overcooked, mushy, and bland. The delicious garlic flavor must be coming from some drizzled oil and isn't cooked into the food. The miso soup was also really sweet as was the broth for the tempura udon. That said, the tempura itself is decent and was probably the best part of our meal. Really disappointed the nearest sushi restaurant is so bad; I really don't know how it has such high stars. There are plenty of better options in Austin! read more

When I come to Ichiban I remember my mother telling me after I got my driver's license, don't forget to put new underwear on. She was afraid that if I got into an accident the doctors would notice a hole in my underpants. (Trust me, doctors are NOT fashion police, they don't care about your underwear.) Here I worry about holes in my socks, so if you sit in a booth, you have to take your shoes off. I don't want to be caught with holey socks. As luck would have it, we got a booth and I had new socks on. Thanks Mom. The charming girl who showed us to our table also turned out to be our waitress. I wish I got her name because she was so helpful, funny, and attentive. The menu is divided into sections; Sushi, Japanese, and Korean. The Alcohol drink menu was limited to beer and wine. We ordered a Kirin beer and large sake. While waiting for the drinks we were able to get through the menu and decide. Debating whether to get the Suki Yaki to share, we choose to pass as neither of us could remember if we like it the last time we ate it. Instead we opted for the combo plates, BF had the Chicken teriyaki and tempura, and I had the Katsu chicken and tempura. Our miso soup was brought to the tables. We both enjoyed the soup as it contained tofu, green onions, mushrooms, and was packed with flavor. Soon after we finished the soup, the parade of food began. It started with a woman bring a large plate with two big flattened chicken breasts - Katsu Chicken. I stopped and questioned her if this was our order as I got the combo. She nodded yes and in broken English, "Tempura coming". I wasn't convinced this was out order but the hunger in me couldn't wait. BF and I snacked on this chicken while waiting for what would come next. The Katsu was coated in panko and had a good crispness. The Katsu had a light dizzle of a Japanese BBQ sauce. We definitely wished we had a bowl of it to dip the chicken in. We finished off one breast, so good. Round two were the two plates of Tempura Shrimp and vegetables. Two large shrimps, a slice of sweet potato, one ring of onion, a ring of green pepper, a brocolli flower, and two slices for acorn squash, all delicately batter fried. The dipping sauce, I felt, was heavy on the soy and I perfer when you can't tell what is in it but you must have more. At this point we knew we would have leftovers so we ate the tempura first. Round three delivery of the chicken teriyaki, which again were two huge breasts layed on a bed of vegetables. Although we were so full, we did contemplate for a couple of minutes the Fried red bean ice cream. For the amount of food, and the quality of food, plus the excellent service, the price was well worth it. No, I will not talk further about the Koi pond outside as other reviewers covered it. One last point to bring up, if you are short like me, be forewarned that the booth tables are wider than they look. He asked what seating I would like, booth or table, which was nice because I was alone and often places will automatically seat you at a small table when you may want a booth. Nice touch. He seated me and went to get the menus. He returned right away with not only the menus but also a glass of water. Again, nice touch. He asked if I had any questions, but I knew what I wanted. I ordered the mini bento box with the bulgogi beef. After ordering, I had a chance to take a good look at the interior of the restaurant. I liked the interior decor and atmosphere of the restaurant. It was relaxing and the lighting was bright enough to see clearly, but it wasn't too bright. My dish came with miso soup and house salad, so that arrived first. The soup had a good taste and the salad had a dressing that was tart and tangy. Don't know what it was but it was good. The mini bento box arrived just as I was finishing my salad. It contained the beef bulgogi which was good, as well as 6 pieces of California roll, rice and 2 pieces of gyoza. The gyoza looked like a fried potsticker. It had meat and vegetables inside and it was a crispy delight. I was happy with my decision for $9.95. I noticed they have a new roll on the specials board as I was leaving. Despite the less than appealing outside appearance as most buildings in this area on Burnet Rd, I was pleasantly surprised by Ichiban. Ichiban has a small patio and a quaint water structure running across the front of the restaurant. The inside is made up of a mish mash of sushi bar, sit down restaurant and traditional Korean style tables. Modern? Not so much but the traditional style has an appeal. The sushi menu was completely straight forward, sectioning their items by categories such as "fresh" "vegetarian" "fried" accompanied by pictures of each roll. I opted with the Samurai roll and the spicy tuna roll. The Samurai roll consists of layered tuna, salmon, yellow tail, ginger and avocado on the inside wrapped in soybean paper. The Samurai rolls was fabulous, the flavors complimented each other perfectly. The spicy tuna roll was spicy without globing a mess of spicy mayonnaise and the fish was fresh. The service is a little slow but the quality and presentation more than makes up for it. Might not be the best place during lunch if you are on a short time schedule. The drink menu consists of 3 hot sakes, 10 hot sakes, sake bomb, 9 wines and 15 beers (to include Fireman's 4). As I was leaving Ichiban I noticed someone on the small bridge at the entry to discover the beautiful Koi she was feeding. Come on, Courtney - you added a piece of gum to a gum wall in Seattle. You willingly let yourself be surrounded by germs. Now is not the time nor the place for this nonsense. Take off your shoes, sit down, and get over it. Okay, brain. Shoes off, butt firmly planted in booth, thoughts of germs are being pushed out of my mind. As I'm perusing the menu, my friend is writing what he wants on a piece of paper. Hmm, that's a cute way of ordering sushi. Very efficient. (Apparently this is a common practice, but it was my first time seeing it. I need to get out more.) We tally up what we want and I can't help but notice that it seems like a whole lot of sushi for just two people. Three rolls and various nigiri - are you sure we can eat all of this? Yeah, we can. Okkaaayyy. He also orders a large pot of sake. Let me give you a little tip - unless you really like sake or you really like being drunk, do not order a large pot of sake for just two people, especially when one person hasn't ever really had sake and very quickly discovers that she is not the biggest fan. "How are you even going to drink all of this? Why didn't you check the menu to see what size a large was?" "I didn't think it was going to be that big!" That's what she said, except we were not pleasantly surprised in this instance, because there really are times where bigger is not always better. "You need to call your roommate. Have him come help us." "I'm not going to call him! You can't just invite someone out to sushi like that. We already put our order in." "So? Call him. There is no way we can finish all of this." The nigiri wasn't the best quality, but it was good. I don't remember the rolls I tried, but I know for sure that I ordered the Red Dragon roll and it was pretty good. I just don't remember what rolls my friend ordered... and I don't remember which one I tried. Whoops. Sure enough, though, it was way too much sushi. My friend was getting full before the end was really even in sight. "You ordered all this sushi, you better eat it! Did you call your roommate yet? We really need some help here." Oh, happy days, The Roommate has arrived! Better get eatin' son, this sushi isn't going to eat itself! Drink up, too, because I am officially over Sake Party 2014. Between the three of us, we make short work of that large ass pot of sake AND all that sushi. I don't know how we did it, but we did. It is truly amazing what a small group of determined individuals can accomplish when they put their minds together. Some people might focus their efforts on solving world hunger or giving impoverished areas clean water. Hell, they might even combine their talents to work towards world peace. Us? Naw, we just work toward consuming a ridiculous amount of food because someone's eyes were larger than their stomach and we do not let food go to waste. Good hustle, team! Besides the fact that we each earned a gold star in finishing our plates, the best was yet to come. Did you know that the little bridge you cross to enter goes over a little pond well stocked with koi fish? Did you know that you can feed the koi fish? Now you do! You read correctly, you can FEED THE KOI FISH. I was grinning like an idiot, happily throwing pellets of food into their eagerly awaiting mouths. If a larger koi pushed a smaller fish friend out of the way, I made sure to sprinkle some to the side so each fish friend got something to eat. Equality for all, guys. The food could be terrible here and I'd still come back just because I can feed some fish. This is our favorite place for sushi and Korean fare. Their sushi is great - this is where we learned how to like sushi. Their dinners, like Teriyaki and other items are high quality and well prepared. My favorite is the Hot Pot BiBamBap. If I were to search for anything to complain about, I suppose I could say that sometimes the staff gets the side dishes a little mixed up or totally forgets about them. BEST Place to take a Date! And amazing happy hour prices. I took my beautiful girlfriend to this place not knowing what to expect. We walked in and were seated in a very private booth (perfect for smooching) and we were seated on the floor with our shoes off. Although we were sitting on the floor it was very comfortable. And my girl was just eating up the atmosphere! She loved the no shoes and sitting on the flood aspect. We got there right when happy hour began. We got 5 sushi rolls, 2 green teas, and a large Sake. Our total was only 38.99. And the Sushi was incredibly fresh and delicious. The Tea was great and the Hot Sake was pretty average! On our way out after a very successful date we noticed a beautiful Koi pond in front of the restaurant. The service was great! The food and drink were great! Second time coming here. Never disappointed. We ordered the sushi 10 pic & roll combination which comes with the chefs choice of nigiri, spicy tuna, and the dragon roll. They let us switch out the spicy tuna with pink lady. We also go another plate of lovey dovey, which was my fav!! I would recommend to anyone who loves a hint of spice. I had a great meal at Ichiban, once they got it right. A word of caution-they put eel sauce on most of their sushi items, even though it is not listed on the menu. Both my soft shell crabs and my Lovey Dovey roll (shrimp tempura, spicy crab, salmon and jalapeno) came out with eel sauce on them. They did remake them when I complained, however, and were nice about it, so we're good. The Green Paradise roll (tuna, salmon, white fish, avacado, and marinated krab) was wrapped with cucumber instead of rice and was delicious. The tempura soft shell crabs were delicious, albeit on the small side, and the tempura veggies were excellent, too. Great service and fresh sushi-a great combination! read more

Based off some absolutely stellar reviews from fellow Yelpers, I decided to check this place out with the girlfriend in order to scope the Austin sushi scene. With a name like 'Ichiban,' meaning 'Number One' in Japanese it definitely does set certain expectations for any restaurant goers. In terms of locale, I really loved the addition of a Koi pond and the cozy warm interior. Food wise though, we really weren't that impressed with the sushi or choices made with the rolls. For starters, I ordered mackerel, salmon and albacore tuna sushi. The mackerel was way too fishy and oily, a sign that it wasn't fresh at all. I tend to get mackerel at sushi restaurants because its one of the easiest fish to help you gauge how fresh the catch is thats being served. If its fresh, its mildly fishy but incredibly flavorful and refreshing. The salmon and the albacore tuna were a-ok, nothing mind blowing. Now the real offender was in the form of one of the rolls, which was covered in a sauce that was supposed to be 'Playboy' roll (Fried shrimp, spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, salmon), which sounded delicious but was ruined by the addition of a white sauce drizzled on top that we both agreed tasted like chocolate. Chocolate on my sushi? I realize that modern sushi chefs can get really creative with their toppings, but save the chocolate for dessert please. In summary, for the price we paid we thought the quality was average sushi wise. I didn't have a chance to try the hot food, so take this as a review of strictly the sushi for fairness. read more

Ichiban easily has the best sushi presentation/plating in Austin, without it being an upscale restaurant. The owner really cares about his customers and it shows. Order more than 4 rolls and it's pretty much guaranteed to be on a cool sushi boat. Favorite Roll: WHITE BLANCO. On top is escolar and it's an amazing fish to eat, especially if you've never tried it. The honey wasabi sauce adds a special touch. I don't even like wasabi, but this sauce has great flavor. Though sushi is this restaurant's staple, the owner's family is actually Korean. So all the additional Korean menu items are truly authentic and very flavorful. I suggest picking pork bulgogi over beef, because it has more spice & flavor. The bibimbap here is so gooood! I feel like their homemade sauce is different from other places, so give it a shot if bibimbap is one of your favorites. All the kitchen entree items, especially the Korean ones are really big portions. So even though the pricing may seem overpriced, it's definitely worth the value. You'll more than likely have enough to share or just take home. Lastly, the venue is fun. A good, unique experience with the koi pond and sunken booths. Great for kids who may enjoy those aspects of Asian flair as well. Birthday dessert may be given out to kids and a lot of kid-friendly menu items. I came here because I had a great experience at happy hour before. This time was not really the same as last time and I was really disappointed. I order the same thing and they serve it in the big boat which always has shock and awe factor but, that fell flat this time. I met a friend here after raving about their happy hour and the sushi we received was luke warm. Like everyone who eats sushi, I like mine cold. The service was not great at all either. It was few and far between when she checked on us and our drinks went empty many times. I was a huge fan of this place because of their early happy hour and it's close proximity to my house. We were the only ones in here for an hour this time and maybe that is a reflection of their food and service declining. The Spicy Rainbow Roll was meh. The Texan was yummy. Oh, and my sake never came. Overall I thought it was good and the service was friendly. My Boyfriend and I called ahead on a Friday night and there was no wait for a party of two. We headed on over to Ichiban, and found the parking situation a bit daunting, very tight corners and hard to get into the spot. When we walked in we were instantly transported, the beautiful koi pond and bridge already had made up for my frustration over parking. We were able to be seated instantly. The host brought us to our booth and instructed us to take our shoes off. For the booths you have to sit on the ground, but there are comfy butt cushions available. I would suggest wear socks: there was a rogue ball of rice on the carpeted floor of the booth that was quite unpleasant. The table was very private, with screens up blocking the view to other parties. However, those screens do not block noise and we had to listen to a bunch of Californians talk about their drunken frat adventures the entire meal. The service was leisurely, not too fast and not too slow. To drink my boyfriend got the small hot sake, and I got the Sapporo on draft. The house sake was vile, but as it was my first time trying sake I am probably not the one to judge. The beer was fine, of course. Served in a large frosty mug. To eat I had the Seafood Yaki Udon, which was delish and filled with TONS of seafood. I felt like I barely even made a dent in the plate. My Boyfriend ordered the Salmon Teriyaki, but Chicken Teriyaki was brought out instead. The waitress quickly apologized, and sent out 2 filets of salmon and comped the chicken (letting us keep the extra protein). My boyfriend said that the chicken was lackluster, but the salmon was on point. Get the fried rice. Just do it. We also shared 2 sushi rolls, the crunchy roll and the spider roll. The presentation was amazing! Both rolls came out about 10 min after our entree, displayed beautifully together on a wooden plate.The crunchy roll was to die for, but the spider roll was super fishy (in a bad way), and the crunch was long gone by the time we got it. Went for lunch about 12:45. It was relatively empty and the service was quick. I got the full size bento box with the spicy pork. The spicy pork was excellent, but the rest of the box was just ok. It's $2 extra for the larger box with the tempura. The tempura consisted of: 1 shrimp 1 green bean 1 slice sweet potato 1 onion ring 1 green pepper ring The shrimp was good, the green pepper was a little strong. Not a fan of deep fried green peppers apparently. Next time I'll skip the $2 up charge for the tempura. Total cost was about $13 before tip Korea House up the road on Anderson has a similar bento box, but 2 pieces of shrimp. A little less meat on the bulgogi, but a lower price on the box as a whole. My fiancé and I have been here several times now. Love the booths set into the flooring. The sushi is consistently good. Highly recommend the salmon sushi and Jalamachi. Staff is always friendly and remembers us every time we come in. read more
