I was looking forward to have some Asian food tonight in Freeport and delighted to find this place on Yelp. We parked in the parking lot and walked inside without noticing there was a sign saying "use the other door." It was 7:30pm and it was dark. They didn't lock that door so we stepped right in. The young girl behind the countered yelled out "use the other door" and wanted us to enter that tiny restaurant from the side door. We didn't bother and just left. If they didn't want anyone to walk into the restaurant then why didn't they just lock it? It's a power trip and we ain't having it. We went to Cancun and had Mexican food instead. For a sushi restaurant in the rural Midwest, this place is pretty good! They have a variety of types of sushi, including classic favorites and special rolls. I'm also pleased that they have several vegetarian options -- my favorites are the sweet potato roll and the vegetarian rolls. Have been here a number of times when passing through the area. They've recently taken excellent precautions for customer safety for takeout. Appreciate their considerations! Note: the restaurant is very casual in nature. read more

Food is good all around but nothing special. It's good for Freeport but the lack of being open to indoor seating is annoying. A bit overpriced for what you get. Sit down prices for take home food. Sushi tastes great, portion sizes are alright. read more

Outstanding sushi. I recently have gone to two different Japanese restaurants, and the sushi was so blah that I stopped craving sushi. I thought I would try this place out, and my love for sushi has returned. Located off to the side of a gas station, this restaurant is bright, clean, and peaceful. They seem to get a lot of takeout orders. They serve bento boxes and other Japanese fare as well. Our Marry, Sunday Morning, and spicy crab rolls were fabulous. The Marry and Sunday Morning were special rolls and were breaded and fried. So much flavor and well made. The bill came to about $25. I can't wait to return! read more

While it is awesome that Freeport has a sushi option, this place is pretty subpar. My parents took us here while we were visiting from the Southwest and they really enjoy it. The service was good and our meal for four came out pretty quickly. The miso soup was forgettable, as was the broad range of sushi with our meal(not flavorful and fell apart easily). However, the crab rangoons and sweet rolls were very, very good. Definitely save the sweet rolls for after the meal! There was nothing wrong with our service or food but we did find the sushi to be below average for what we have experienced elsewhere. Honestly, I'm just so happy we have Japanese food of ANY kind in Freeport, that I'm hardly going to complain. I can get tempura, and they are nice enough to leave out the veggies I don't like (squash and sweet potato) bless them. Service is usually good, and staff are friendly. The food is overall decent. Not the best I've ever had, but we aren't in Hawaii (where I grew up) after all. This is just fine and I'm happy they are here. read more

Eww eww eww! Disgusting. I ordered tepanyaki shrimp and rice because the lady who answered the phone said it's cooked hibachi style and it was not! The steak was cut into bite sized pieces the size of my pinky nail and way over cooked. Wasn't even asked how I wanted it done. The shrimp only has pepper on it and was nasty. The soup was gross. Chicken broth with a couple pieces of green onion. I just can't. I wasted $18 here. Only thing edible was the rice. Asked for ginger sauce and they gave some nasty looking Big Mac sauce. Yuck! My favorite place in Freeport, but I will say I never dine in. The service is suprisingly slow for seemingly not much reason. Order to go and you will likely have your order ready in 15-25 minutes. The sushi is fairly simple but consistent (which is my preference) and I really enjoy the spicy crab roll. The entrees are pretty typical but never bad. Overall great food for a small town that has some notably horrible restaurants. read more

We love Ichiban, it's one of the best tasting options In Freeport. We have had them help us out with vegetarian and vegan options and they are always willing to create something for us. I've never had a bad experience or a messed up order there and that is saying a lot as this is pretty common in Freeport. They have a little bar that you can watch them make your sushi at and they will help you figure out their menu. Prices are reasonable and the only reason I hesitate to give five stars is because I don't personally like the tv in the middle of the dining room. I think it actually takes away from the ambiance. To each their own in that department I suppose. They have less hardcore stuff if raw fish isn't your thing including a teriyaki style chicken and many cooked sushi rolls. Stopped by here on a Sunday evening after 5p with another family on our drive back to Chicago from Galena only because 1) we were told to stop in Freeport for ice cream at Union Dairy and their grill is closed on Sundays; 2) virtually every other restaurant in Freeport was closed. We came here two miles away because it was not only open, but seemed to have decent reviews. The modest exterior was a bit concerning but inside, clean decor, a very friendly staff, and delicious food awaited. Being from Chicago, we figured there was zero chance this place would have sushi that would be on par with some of our favorite neighborhood spots in the city. However, not only was the sushi of great quality, the value was amazing relative to what we're use to. Got the Family Sushi Roll plate with eight rolls for $37, including 4 miso soups and crab rangoon. The Ryan Roll was the best. We also ordered four bento boxes and the shrimp and yume yume chicken were quite flavorful. Kids loved everything they had. Would welcome the opportunity to come back and eat here again. read more

I saw high reviews and thought I give this place a try. I did NOT have a good experience with this place, the food took forever to come and when it did. It literally looks AND taste like it was made in less then 10 mins. I ordered the chicken teriyaki chicken bento box. The portion was very little and not worth the price. Very friendly staff but we were shocked when we saw such a small portion of salmon in a salmon avocado roll. Not only one roll but found some others as well. I don't recommend sushi roll at here. Worst ones I have ever had before. read more

Yes, it's in the middle of the Heartland and yes, it's hard to get good seafood unless it's catfish or walleye. Nevertheless this is a nice little place for sushi and tempura. We've never been disappointed. read more

Dinning on a weeknight is great because buisness is slow, therefore service is fast, can get a little stuffy on a weekend but special shoutout to the rainbow roll and green devil roll. The ONLY GOOD place for Asian food in Freeport and the ONLY reliable restaurant for sashimi. I could go on and on but I think that says it all. If Ichiban is closed, trying to eat at the other restaurant that serves sushi (a Chinese place--no real sushi chef) on the south side of town, is a bitter disappointment--no better than grocery store sushi.
