A well deserved 5 stars! In an era of app driven everything it's refreshing to know family run businesses like this not only still exist but are thriving and drawing loyal customers from across town. We just moved to oakland and on asking our new neighbors which of the few cleaners walking distance from our place they've used we were suggested to make the trek to Ideal ~2 miles away and with many other options along the route. "Good" and "honest" as our neighbor put it. 'Nuff said. One large accumulated pile of dry cleaning and laundry later I totally get the praise...every piece came back immaculate... and let me tell you with a nine month old daughter they didn't look anything close to this going in! Friendly service and obvious years of experience plus a plant on premise (no worries of clothes gone lost en route...) all put us at ease immediately. You can't replace this or the pleasure of the smiling faces from the owners here with an app service. This is the best dry cleaning spot that I have ever had the pleasure of frequenting in my entire life. Every interaction with them is super pleasant and professional. Paul is the dude who I usually chit-chat with, but last time in, I met his bro, and I think his pops may be the guy in the Oakland Tribune articles on the wall. They do incredible work here, with rock bottom prices, and super quick turn around time. It seems that all work is done on-prem as well, which is really rare these days. admittedly, my wedding gown is simple. no beads, no lace. but, i did get it at a sample sale, and therefore, was fairly well-worn. in other words, it needed a thorough cleaning before the wedding. so, i went to the international fabricare institute's website to find a nearby cleaner, and ideal came up. they were nearby, and turnaround was fast (i brought it in on tuesday, and i could pick it up on friday.) when i picked it up, i, naturally, looked it over, and i think it looked even better than new! and the damage? a mere $45! i'm going to start bringing all my clothes here! read more

Their dry cleaning services are good, esp. If you are not in a hurry. But do not get alterations done there. The stitching of every pant I have brought there came undone--this includes hemming, pocket repair, and zipper replacement. All have unraveled. Nice people but shoddy alterations. read more

I dropped off several shirts here (only one was a typical "business" shirt which can be pressed by automatic machinery so it was $2.50; the rest had to be pressed by hand so they cost more) and they all came back clean and absolutely perfectly pressed--right down to the last little detail. You can tell they are perfectionists here. I'm not sure how the prices compare to other places nearby, but in terms of the quality, I was quite impressed. I also like that they do the cleaning on site. And--not that this really matters, but I'll put it out there anyway--the store front looks very cool, and actually is on some sort of historical registry. read more

The problem with Yelp is that anyone can logon and bash a business unnecessarily. In this day and age of instantaneous media we are flooded with opinions that may, but many times have no merit. I'm not a regular reviewer, but when I find businesses that have great service and contribute to the community I've gotta give them props. We've been taking our clothes here for the past three years for dry cleaning and alterations and have always been satisfied with the service. Take my opinion for what is worth. My seamstress was working on my 100% silk tulle wedding dress, right up to the very last minute, before my wedding. The dress had stains from all of the intricate, ribbon flourish work on the bodice, and needed to be dry cleaned before the wedding. To my surprise, after calling several cleaners (at least 6), not only does it take 2-weeks to get a wedding dress dry cleaned, it is also normally @ $200. Eeek. I had no idea. I called Ideal and asked if it could be dry cleaned, along with my husband's vintage silk, sharkskin suit, within 3 days. The very polite man told me of course it can, and it was only $80 for the dress (a HUGE savings from all of the other 2-week, $200 quotes)!! When I arrived at Ideal, I then found out that they are recognized as a preferred vendor of the Art Deco Society, which means they know how to dry clean all of my VINTAGE CLOTHING!! I normally take my everyday career clothing to May Cleaners, but for vintage and special occasion wear, I can put my trust into Ideal Cleaners. When I got my wedding dress back, the day before my wedding, It was pristine clean, hung on a special box form hanger, and gorgeous. I am now a huge fan of Ideal Cleaners. read more

I'm sorry to say after all the good reviews that this place is terrible. I took my dry cleaning there and they totally ruined a very expensive top (from Anthropologie) of mine. The owner kept telling me it wasn't his fault. He asked me to leave the top and my phone number and to this day, I still haven't recieved a call back. This was the first time I had the top cleaned and it was totally ruined. They didn't even mention it when I picked up the garmet and didn't tag it. I was shocked to see when I went to wear it that the color was completely ruined. All he took responsibility for was for not telling me when I picked up my cleaning. I had problems with two other items that I took there. One, had a couple of water marks on them, that I pointed out when I droped it off. The watermarks were not taken out and no mention - it was as if I never even dropped the item off, but they did still charge for the cleaning. The other skirt I asked for them to add extra starch. When I picked up the item, they had not put extra starch and when I asked them about it, they gave an excuse after the fact that they couldn't and shouldn't use extra starch on that item. Information that if true they should have shared when I requested the extra starch and that no other clearner has ever given me. They seem to have an excuse for everything. If you have high quality items that you don't want ruined, don't take your cleaning there. Sorry for the rant, I'm just very upset with this situation. read more

These guys are the best. I ran in this morning with an emergency pressing request. (Shame on me for packing my last clean dress shirt poorly before traveling to Oakland.) Although they were super busy finishing up morning orders before the weekend, they not only accommodated me, but got me back out the door within 15 minutes. $39 to dry clean three jackets and mend the pocket on one of the jackets. Not sure if that is a lot or a little to pay for dry cleaning, but the have an amazing art deco sign and the owner is very friendly. I bring my dog in when I dropped off/picked up and the owner told me about Jerry Brown's corgi both times, which is endearing. I think it's a family business, the younger son (in his 40s or so) is friendly as well. read more

I am very picky about my dry cleaning, for example some places don't press perfectly along the crease of your pants, leaving you with a weird double crease. I wish I had read the review about alterations. I took some of my vintage and more delicate pieces to Ideal for cleaning and minor sewing (a button off here, hem loose there). They charged me far more for sewing mends that probably took upwards of 5 mins to do. They charged $7-$10 per mend and they were not at all transparent about pricing for either sewing or dry cleaning. The only good thing I can say is that they cleaned all of my clothes thoroughly. However it is not enough to make me feel as if I wasn't nickel and dimed. read more

On my way to new York I needed some things altered. Mr. Lee stayed open until I was off from work which was well past closing. Best cleaners in the bay area. I would give it no stars if I could. I have used them for drycleaning and alterations for the past year. I think I never went to a new place just because of the location. Drycleaning-- I've picked up dozens of shirts that seemed to have just been pressed and not cleaned. When confronting owner he dismissed my comments. Alterations-- I've had 2 dress slacks and 2 jeans hemmed here. Jeans were fine. Slacks were done wrong the first time and had to go back. This time I had to go back THREE times because my pants were altered wrong! First pick-up-- pants were 2 inches too long. Owner said that he was not responsible for measuring it wrong whne I had tried the slacks on for him and he marked it himself. I said that I wanted where he marked, so why are they so much longer. He stated that I could just wear heels and that I must have tried the pants on differently. My ticket stated the hem length which was not what I received. When confronted about what the ticket was marked he wanted to say-- let's forget about this and I'll fix for you for free. Wow. Second pick up--pants were 1 inch too SHORT! Went back for the third time to get my money back to go somewhere else (if anyone can fix it now that's it's too short and material was cut off). Asked him why my pants are now too short? He had no answer and said that the alterations lady can't see the numbers sometimes and messes up. Wow! So after 30 min. I was finally able to get my $15 back and have owner agree that I will need to be reimbursed for my now ruined dress slacks if another seamtress cannot correct. I will never go back here again. It was so unprofessional to have someone tell you it is your fault because they did not hem pants the correct length TWICE! read more

I will never come back especially after they ruin my 2 expensive top from free people. after I point it out to the person who took my dry cleaners he proceed to loudly tell me that it's not their fault that it's ruined. A lady told me to just leave my 2 tops and come back tomorrow. Next day I came back and the top wasn't even touched. They just hanged it in the back room; ridiculous. Never coming here again. I totally agree with Christine's post here. They have screwed up orders a number of times and I, or my husband, is always to blame. My husband dropped off a suit coat to have the button replaced. They replaced it, no issue. A week later, it fell off. He took it back to have them replace it again. They told him it wasn't their fault and that the button must be falling off because my husband rides a bike with the jacket on. What???? A week later, it fell off. Again, my husband's fault. "You must pull it too hard." No joke! Asked my mother to replace the button--it's been over 6 months now and the button has remained in place. We decided to give these guys another try after several months with another cleaner. Big mistake. My husband took another suit coat in to have the lining sewed. It was a smallish 6 inch area in the back of his suit where the lining was separated from the fabric. A simple mend--I should have done it myself! When my husband returned to pick up the suit, it looked terrible. The fabric was puckering like they sewed it way too tight. Again, the owner placed blame elsewhere. "The lining fabric must have shrunk." Are you kidding me? This suit has been cleaned over and over again and all of a sudden, it shrinks! I don't think so. If you are looking for even remotely decent customer service, do not go here. They are nice people, but they do not have any sense of customer service. Also, if you would prefer that your clothes look the same, only better, when you pick them as they did when you dropped them off, don't go here. Especially if you are seeking alterations. You will be left to pay the bill to them and to the tailor you have to take it to to repair their damage. read more

As if I couldn't love this cleaner enough, last week they removed an enormous red wine stain - an entire glass' worth - from a light purple 1940s rayon dress (I specify because of how wrong this cleaning could have gone). despite that it is a little more expensive and closes early enough to have us running from work, my fiancee and i still patronized this place. however, tonight after picking up my fiancee's shirts and sweaters, we noticed that the cleaners had used a sharpie to mark the name of the account (my name) on his new laundered shirts. not the tags, on the shirts proper. it is unacceptable to write on somebody's new clothes, just so they can keep track of them. earn your money and wash it by hand instead of defacing personal property. never again... read more

I got two area rugs cleaned here. They did a great job cleaning, but the price was high! It was over $200 for my two small rugs. I guess this is my fault for not doing a better job shopping around for my options. The rugs were well cleaned, however the older oriental one sustained some damage, not sure if it could have been avoided. I'd come back to get clothes dry cleaned, but will look for somewhere else to clean my rugs! read more

I've used Ideal for everything from alterations (where they go through the measurements with you at the counter and offer advice on them for free) to dry cleaning to shirt pressing. They've saved me from mistakes I made when measuring things on my own, and did a brilliant and complicated repair on some worn-down sleeves for a great price. Staff are always super friendly, and they'll speed work up if you say you need it. read more

Brought my wedding dress here after reading yelp reviews. I have mixed feelings about this place. Disclaimer: the total was $45 and I have no idea how this compares with other establishments...I may have gotten what I paid for. When I went to pick up my dress the gentleman didnt know whether he cleaned it for before wedding or after (preservation). Well, this scared me. He rang me up and I asked to look at the dress before he gave it to me. He didnt offer this. I looked at the dress and saw that there was a little subtle but noticeable dirt mark on the front of the dress- was not there before. I asked him about it and he nodded like he was dismissing my comment and then told me to come back in 2 hours. Slightly annoyed I smiled and left. I came back and the spot was removed. He even offered to walk the dress to my car. Not sure if this is something he normally did. When I tried the dress on at home I noticed the the lining was clearly not pressed (or pressed well) because it was not laying flat. Many parts of the dress were also not pressed well. I had to take my dress back to my alteration's person (Anne V.) to do some last minute fixes and had to rely on her to press the rest for me (one week before the wedding at this point). Conclusion: have nothing to compare it to but mixed feelings. read more

I've used lots of different dry cleaners over the years and never had this happen: when I went to in to pick up my clean clothes at Ideal Cleaners, the person helping me told the me the amount due and then proceeded to hand me a note that was folded and stapled close. Inside were several dollar bills. I asked why he was giving me money and he said, "we found that money in your pants pocket." To say the least, I was impressed! read more
