We were looking for a good seafood restaurant on St Simons Island and chose Iguanas because the menu looked good and they have gluten free options. Also, it's located downtown and has a very nice beach vibe on the inside. We started with the shrimp cocktail which was great. The shrimp were meaty and the cocktail sauce tasted great too. My Bloody Mary was the perfect combo too. Our server, Shiela, was very helpful with her recommendations. I ordered the blackened fish dinner, which was supposed to be haddock, but tasted like flounder. I mentioned this to Sheila and she made sure that we were happy. The Manager, Mike also came to talk to us to make sure we were happy with the food quality. Even though it was in my opinion, the wrong fish the meal tasted great and the personal service was fantastic. We will be back on our next visit. read more

We were visiting the area on vacation and wanted a good place for dinner on our first night. We saw iguanas and checked in to see if they had availability for four people. They were able to seat us immediately. The restaurant was packed with people, so we figured it was popular. The waitress brought us our menus quickly and asked for our drink orders. We were able to look over the seafood based menu before ordering. I chose the blackened flounder with green beans, hush puppies, and coleslaw. The food came out quickly and was hot. The blackened fish was okay but somewhat dry. The hush puppies were three tiny pieces. The coleslaw and green beans were good. There was free ice cream as we walked out, so we got ice cream cones with sprinkles to go. They had other toppings to choose from and options of cones or bowls. read more

There are a lot of mediocre to good fried seafood restaurants in St. Simons. We chose Iguanas because of its gimmick - free soft serve ice cream for dessert if you buy a meal. Iguanas has the usual "nautical" decor, with (plastic) sharks and shark's jaws on the wall. But the fried seafood is actually pretty good. My fried oyster plate was excellent, though the oysters on the half shell were small (but only around $11 or$12 for a half dozen, which counts as cheap these days.) Service was friendly and efficient. Drinks were moderately priced. The well-established spot perhaps could use a refurb and a deep cleaning, but I'd go back. With drinks, tax and tip our meal came to around $85 for three. Not bad! My family liked it so much they stopped in for a light lunch the next day ... and for the free ice cream. read more

My family and I have been coming to iguanas for as long as I can remember. This spot on the island is great for some simple, quick, and good seafood. It's nothing fancy or intricate, but the simple items on the menu do the job for a good meal. I always lean towards ordering from their combo section where you can pick 2 or 3 seafood and one side. It comes with two hush puppies and coleslaw. I ordered their blackened fish and fried oysters with fries! This is my first time having their fish blackened and I actually enjoyed it! We were on waitlists for 2 other restaurants when my husband tried Iguanas and called us away from a bar down the street to grab our table for 6. I was confused when we went inside, expecting a Mexican restaurant. Instead it was a bit generic, but we went inside over to our booth. We all ordered different fish meals. I ordered a grilled haddock sandwich. Omg, we all raved about our meals. Huge portions, perfectly cooked, great bread, plenty of lettuce and tomatoes and remoulade sauce and tarter on the side. Ok-here's the kicker. After we were done, we were advised to go to the soft serve ice cream bar. It included vanilla, chocolate or swirl. Bowl or cone. Caramel, chocolate or peanut butter sauce, and 2 types of sprinkles or crushed peanut sauce. We were all amazed by the service, tasty food and surprisingly yummy ending. If they indulged in some ambience upgrades we probably would never get inside, so for now we'd happily trade plain over fancy. Iguanas is a keeper. read more

I've been to Iguana's dozens of times and I like it enough that it's one of the places that I simply must visit whenever I come to town. Exterior Very limited parking along the street. Like all the places on this street, you better just cross your fingers and hope that someone is leaving as you drive along Mallery. Lol. There are a several outdoor tables along the sidewalk if you like people-watching while you eat. Interior Pretty spacious with high ceilings so it can get loud - especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Booths are those hard, wooden ones. Bar stools are also uncomfortable but it's probably by design - so they can turn tables faster. Lol. Food The food is outstanding. I have yet to come here and have an awful meal. I would avoid the Caesar salad (or ask for the dressing on the side), but otherwise they knock it outta the park here. I've loved pretty much everything I've tried and so have my dining partners. My go to is the Pick 2 - and I always get flounder & flounder (lol). Sometimes I get it grilled / blackened but I typically get it fried. It's a massive piece of fish and the batter is light and crispy. They also do a great job with their cheese grits. And while that may not seem like a big deal, you'd be surprised at how, even in the south, it's rare to find a restaurant that serves up decent grits. They're typically either soupy and runny or bland and unseasoned. Not here. These are grits like your mama or grandmama used to make. I can't have shellfish but pretty much everyone I know loves the shrimp - especially the bang bang shrimp. Price / Value I think the the prices are good. You simply cannot go wrong with the Pick 2. I've never ventured past the bathrooms, but I'm told they have free ice cream in the back and it includes all sorts of sundae toppings as well. It's fun to see the little kids walking around with their soft serve ice cream cones. Customer Service On my last visit, I had some really great customer service but the service CAN be hit or miss. Like a lot of restaurants, they probably have high turnover. And during the summer months, there's a good chance that you're gonna have a lot of first-time-in-the-workforce teenage servers that are gonna try to ruin your dining experience - but my advice is, "don't let them!" My server on last visit was Kaemon and while I initially thought it was Cayman, like the island, he explained that it was Kaemon - the Japanese word for peace (although the internet said it's Japanese for joyful). Kaemon looked like wavy, blonde haired, blue-eyed surfer and he was both joyful and brought us peace (thanks to a Moscow mule and several other libations throughout the evening - lol) - so thanks to him! This place was recommended by a host at the WW II museum. Now if you are looking for a place for good seafood, this is the place We ordered thextwo items for lunch. My wife had the broiled shrimp. It was cooked to perfection. It had the right season which my wife enjoyed. I had the deep fried oysters. It had the right amount breading. And had the perfect seasons. My wide had the pasta salad wgmhich was okay. I did suggest to our server that to step the favor to the salad was add diced purple onion. Our group of 7 (3 of them children) all enjoyed our meals. They accommodated my daughter's customization request on her meal and she (and my wife) said the coconut shrimp was delicious and full of flavor. One of the grandkids had the mac-n-cheese as his meal and it was humongous (all the entrees were generous in portion). I had the fried shrimp and they were large and plump. The hushpuppies were a bit bland, though, and there was no cocktail sauce served. But the accompanying remoulade was great. I also sampled the calamari and my wife's shrimp salad and both were good. My appetizer of bacon-wrapped shrimp was decent, but didn't have the promised hint of heat, only sweet. It was fine, but I wouldn't every buy it again. The complimentary soft serve had lots of good toppings and the grandkids were excited by that treat (okay, I admit I liked it too). The waitress was attentive and promptly refilled drinks. The booths are quite cramped and we would have sat outside. But the sidewalk seating only has small tables and can't handle a large group. The fried shrimp appetizer had a very skimpy portion ( the basket basically came out empty, compared to the fried calamari app ). The mahi mahi entree was dry/overcooked and lacked flavor/freshness. The server implied not to order the Mac n cheese side because it "wasn't good" (probably not a good sign in hindsight). The server also brought the checks over (to our party of 6) before we were done eating trying to rush us out. Definitely wouldn't return, if you're looking for a quick simple meal this would probably be a good spot. But if you want a fresh seafood dinner this isn't the spot. read more

This restaurant is a St. Simons staple. You'll find good food, and generous portions. The bar is friendly and well stocked. The front patio is great for people watching, while inside can be a refuge from the heat and a place to catch the game. A wide variety of seafood is on the menu, but there are more than enough non-swimming choices too. I've never seen more bacon on a BLT. And free ice cream, always. It's often packed, for good reason. One of the best seafood restaurants I've been to in coastal Georgia. The decor is bright and painted beautifully to have you enjoy the St. Simons atmosphere. For food we had the trio platter with a combination of fried shrimp, blackened fish and a crab cake. You can get the shrimp and fish fried, blackened, or broiled. They were all fantastic, especially the crab cake. The star of the meal however was the house made remoulade sauce, it went well with everything served! Besides the entrees the restaurant has ALL YOU CAN EAT soft serve ice cream with a complete self serve ice cream bar of hot fudge, sprinkles, and more! MUSSELS We started with an appetizer of Mussels served in white wine garlic butter with garlic toast. It was ok but a little bland. Could use more garlic butter. BARNIE-B The ordered one of their specialties, the Barnum-B. Blackened fish over a bed of grits with a Cajun cream sauce. Served with a side salad. I was not disappointed. Fish is a haddock, and was light and delicious. This is what I would order if we came again. SHRIMP PO-BOY My wife ordered the shrimp po boy and it was ok. Nothing bad but not a stand-out dish. GLUTEN FREE You need to ask but they offer a gluten free menu. This was great news for our daughter!!! The server said they take cross contamination seriously when preparing the food. This restaurant was so good that we visited it twice while on our trip. We ate the shrimp Poboys both times and the bacon cheeseburger one of the times. All of the food was very delicious. Both indoor and outdoor seating is available. Dogs are welcome on the patio. The shrimp in the Po Boy was lightly breaded, well seasoned, and well cooked without being overdone. The sauce provided with it was amazing. I think it was sort of a horseradish and thousand island type combination, but only the cooks really know. The cheeseburger was well seasoned and moist without being greasy. The battered fries were an excellent side for both the po boys and the cheeseburger. The macaroni and cheese side was outstanding. A nice added touch is that complementary ice cream is offered for those dining at Iguana's. They had various syrups and toppings available for the ice cream. The manager came to our table to make sure that we were happy with our food during both visits, and we were. As stated in another review, the restaurants with their quality of service and welcoming environment are a huge part of why visiting Saint Simons Island is so appealing. read more

Very attentive and fast with refills, eager to answer any questions we had, if you go ask for him! My husband and I are visiting from Arizona, and we have been looking forward to some Southern food AND fresh seafood. My husband got the 3 Combo Platter with broiled fish (halibut), broiled shrimp, crab cakes; and I got the 2 Combo Platter with clam strips, fried shrimp. The food was absolutely fantastic and everything we were hoping for. With my husband and I being NOT from the South, our waitress, Yessi, gave us perfect explanations of certain Southern-specific food (for example, both dishes came with a side of Hush Puppies), and then recommended grits with cheese as a side choice - which was super delicious. Yessi was very friendly, professional and on top of things! The overall atmosphere was fun, entertaining and clean as well. We recently went to the island to look for some art and decided to have lunch here. Our party had the shrimp and grits, which were very tasty. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and was in a bacon cream sauce that was delicious. The grits are actually three grit cakes which looked a little like hash brown patties. The portion of grit cakes was very big. We also had the fried fish sandwich, which was also a very big piece of fish, and very tasty. Service was excellent. The restaurant also has a complimentary soft serve ice cream machine with chocolate, vanilla and swirl ice cream. This was an added bonus. read more
