I got the dancing salmon sushi burrito which was half the size of the normal one, and definitely still a very generous portion. The layer of rice was nice and thin, and the salmon was super fresh and well seasoned. There was a good amount of veggies (cucumber and lettuce) inside as well which was a nice texture contrast and flavor balance. There was no line at all and the place was mostly empty. I got a dancing salmon burrito. It was $13, decent size! My 10 year old took a few bites and wanted one that isn't spicy. So I asked if we could do one with eel sauce instead of spicy mayo and the server had no problem with that. It's like a poke bar, you can build your own bowl or burrito. Also had pork gyoza for the 7 year old. Everything tasted great, service was good, packaging is plastic free! The interior is pleasant with lots of seating. Apparently this is the flagship location even though it's very new. That likely means a lot of resources are being put here and it's aimed to attract lots of the nearby college students like myself and hopefully hook us. With that in mind, the interior is stunning as it's not something you expect. I never went into the Jimmy Johns that used to be here so I'm not sure what the interior was beforehand, but I'm absolutely sure it was revamped like crazy. The ordering system seems very easy, but at one point they were recommending ordering online. A sign was posted out front on the ave where everyone walked by to order online and just pick-up. Because of that memory, I simply ordered online and everything was correct, no issues. They are definitely short staffed so if you choose to order inside, expect a little wait. Only two employees during my visit. Ordered the chicken karaage with two sushi burritos (dancing salmon with some customization and the dragon ball with some customization). Chicken karaage - pretty solid actually. I was surprised, chicken was very juicy and tender. Personally I prefer a more crunchy exterior but it was lightly breaded and not overwhelming. Overall positive. Dancing salmon - fresh salmon, yummy, what you kind of expect in a sushi burrito. Dragon ball - broiled eel and tempura shrimp, you can feel the warmth from the broiled eel so that was a nice addition, though it's pushed to one side which means the burrito isn't as evenly distributed and the warmth and coldness is also inconsistent through each bite. I will say, my burrito wasn't quite wrapped fully (pictured), not sure if it's intentional or not but that led to a lot of the juices, spicy mayo, and eel sauce leaking out on the bottom. Also meant the burrito fell apart easy. Anyways, as a whole, I think the sushi burritos are quite tasty. My main complaint is sizing as they're pretty small for the high cost. Obviously it's sushi so it's pricier, but I'd lean towards something like Hiroshi's for value on fish and Chipotle for value on burritos, but if I'm ever craving both at the same time? Well that's where this place comes in. Probably not a consistent go-to option, but a good fallback at the right time. read more

After seeing the "coming soon" sign for months and wondering if it would make it through the pandemic, IJ Sushi Burrito is finally here on The Ave. What to expect: Much like a poke bowl shop, Chipotle, or even their neighbor, Sizzle and Crunch, IJ Sushi Burrito is a build-your-own restaurant where you choose your format (burrito, rice bowl, or salad), your protein (salmon, tuna, crab salad, a few vegetarian options), and then an assortment of toppings. The staff puts it all together and you pay at the register at the front. This makes lunch quick and you can adjust your order depending on how you're feeling that day. They also have a couple of other options on the menu, including two preset poke burrito options, takoyaki, and chicken karaage. We ordered the poke burritos, which are really just giant sushi rolls. They were fresh and delicious, albeit pretty messy to eat. They package them in a nice cardboard box when you order. We also ordered the chicken karaage, which looked a lot more like popcorn chicken (very small pieces, not crispy) but was still yummy, tasted similar to karaage and garlic powder, and came with Thai sweet chili sauce for dipping. My poke burrito (with avocado) and karaage came out to over $26 -- which is pretty pricy for what you get. The restaurant is actually a LOT bigger than it looks, with a variety of seating that would be excellent for singles, couples, and groups. I like the natural wood and contemporary/Japanese interior design style, especially the more moody seating area in the back. It's a great space to have a good conversation or peaceful lunch alone. Overall, it definitely wasn't the fanciest, cheapest, or more creative concept, but all that really matters is that it's a comfortable environment and tastes good, so I'll probably be back. read more
