David Portnoy gave the pizza a 7.4 but he's pretty tough and it's better than that. I'd give it 8.5 at least, but who am I? Try it yourself. I was a bit taken aback when I walked in by the table settings. A bit passé to say the least. The food and service tho more than make up for it.Grilled octopus was spot on and the additional shrimp and baked clams on the plate made it phenomenal. The grilled vegetables needed something to liven them up, but they were grilled to perfection and delicious. Service was very friendly and professional to say the least. First of all, the low key Brooklyn location where parking is hard to find and public transit isn't very close, does not justify the outrageous Manhattan-like prices they charge. Overall do not recommend the food was mediocre and value was low for what we paid. Inferno piccante pizza $17-overly salty with capers and the brined anchovies (not olive oil white anchovies that aren't over salted) . It was tasty but had to drink a ton of water. It was however spicy and thin crust which was nice. Small personal size. Pollo toscano- $26! Omg the chicken was two super thing pieces that were overcooked and dry with essentially no flavor except the balsamic drizzle. The veggies were good and spinach risotto was decent too but the main attraction was not I observed my friends eating their pasta dishes : amatriciana $20 and vodka $18. Those dishes looked sad. Nothing interesting about it and they said it tasted just ok.... Not worth the price tag! Service was excellent they were super attentive filling water constantly and great attitudes. Ambiance was nice but they put us in a group table by the entrance to kitchen (with people bumping my jacket constantly) despite the restaurant being 85% empty and plenty of more optimal spots to seat us. read more

I made a reservation for this place because I had been there before, the food was good, and even though the service wasn't very good, it was a good Italian restaurant that was close by. I expected them to abide by Covid protocols, particularly as the Omicron variant surges. I told the hostess my name and that I had a reservation. She sat us at a big table in the middle of the big room (there are, I believe, two other side rooms). While the waiters wore masks, people were seated around us without our masks on. They did not check proof of vaccination, and I feel pretty confident that someone in the neighboring tables might easily have the virus, considering the surging numbers. I got up to go a few minutes after arriving. The hostess asked what the problem was, and I said: "I really think I am going to get Covid if I stay here." She seemed to admit that they don't check vaccinations. Never going back here. They can stew in their pro-MAGA, anti-vax sauces. read more

First off the waiting staff is a joke. Not attentive at all and no real supervision close by. The food is subpar, nothing exciting. The place was also a bit chilly and my dad wind up having to wear his jacket throughout the whole meal. Most importantly the owner/manger/waiter neglects to tell you about the extra fee if a credit card is used. This should be pointed out before ordering and again at payment time. This is somewhat of a scam because most customers will be using a credit card for payment and should not be subjected to an extra fee because the restaurant is looking for extra money. I had lunch at Il Colosseo yesterday. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious! The bread they brought to the table was fabulous and likely came from an old school Italian bakery in the neighborhood. My cousin who had eaten there before recommended the seafood so we ordered two dishes with seafood. They did not disappoint! Ordered: Capellini alla Frank Sinatra ($17)- This pasta had shrimp, clams, mussels and black olives in a very light tomato sauce. The shrimp at Il Colosseo are some of the best shrimp I've had! The pasta could have benefited from a bit more sauce in my opinion but the seafood was delicious! Zuppa de pesce ($24)- This soup was very good. I have been coming here for years. The food and service have always been great. However, on Saturday, Aug. 3, I went in for dinner and the server was incredibly inappropriate. He continously put his hands on my back and rubbed his hands against my skin. He kept referring to me as "babe." After I pulled away and requested that he not touch me, he continued. This server is in his late 20s to early 30s with glasses. I don't like people who feel entitled to touch me so I will not return. Because I am a woman traveling alone, he thinks he can take advantage. UNACCEPTABLE!! It's a shame because everyone else who works there is very friendly and respectful. This is as Brooklyn Italian as it gets: It was a packed week night, should've made reservations if I'd known. Still managed to grab a small table near the front of the restaurant. Really wanted to try the Risotto and their calamari, and it didn't disappoint. Calamar was cooked just right, not too hard or chewy. Seafood Risotto was al dente; specific to that Mediterranean region in Italy (although I prefer soft and mushy). Also ordered the steak, done just the way I liked (no complaints at all). Tiramsu dessert was boombastic-fantastic. Waitstaff all spoke perfect Italian and good in English, came over a few times to see how the table's doing. I'm so glad I found this gem right around my neighborhood! I went around 7pm on a Friday night and while there was no wait, it was still pretty busy. However, as crowded as it was, the service was impeccable and didn't take long for our food to arrive. The staff was very attentive and we were not rushed at all. For two people, we shared the octopus appetizer, linguine with white clam sauce and the margherita pizza. The octopus was crispy on the outside but still soft on the inside. The marghertia pizza had a perfect balance of sweet and savory. The sauce was delicious! While the linguine was a little under salted in my opinion, the pasta was perfectly al dente which is a big plus for me! With two drinks, our bill came out to right around $50 which is definitely affordable. read more

I ordered Penne bolognese, it was okay. Service - I was disappointed with the service. No one said a word or smiled. They just filled the water and put the plates down and walked away. There was nothing even when we thanked them for refilling the water. Any response would have been good, but nothing. They never asked if everything was okay, which most other restaurants I've been to do. Only one guy at the end of our meal talked to us and tried to make us laugh. Great local, and most importantly, authentic, Italian restaurant. While we usually go to Gino's if we want Italian, we discovered this place a year ago, and it's been our go-to ever since. The calamari here is bomb. The exterior is so light and crispy (but not too crispy), and it comes with a tomato sauce that complements it perfectly. I can finish an entire order on my own tbh, it's that good. The squid itself is perfectly tender but still has a bit of a bite. It doesn't get better than this. The baked clams are pretty nice as well. The clams are really fat and juicy, and perfectly cooked. I like the grilled octopus as well - small tentacles but it has a nice char. In general I would say avoid the specials. We usually get at least one of them whenever we come here, but more often than not it's pretty mediocre, and pricey compared to the menu items. Today there was a rigatoni with meat sauce, and scallop risotto. The rigatoni was decent, but nothing special really. The scallop risotto was a bit of a letdown. The scallops were not seared; instead, they were chopped up into small pieces and cooked along with the risotto, resulting it pretty much boiled scallops. You can taste that the scallops were soaked in the brining liquid as well, so the quality of the scallops could use some work for sure. My favorite item is the pescatore, which is just a bunch of seafood, over linguine (that's the recommend noodle for this dish). They are super generous with the seafood (clams, mussels, fish, scallops, shrimp, etc), and the sauce is a light tomato based sauce and it's such a perfect plate. The Vongole (clams) with linguine is quite nice as well - I like the white sauce with this dish. The pizza here is quite good as well, we really like the white pizza. They do takeout as well so you can def stop by and pick something up to take home. Overall I would say this is above average Italian food in Bensonhurst. It's reasonably priced and nearby so it's a staple in my family. I also like how it's an open kitchen so you can see the chefs working their magic. read more

Foods and families coming together one of the best feelings there is. This places have it... The food is very well made and prepared! Service is always busy because of the pack of guests, but still manage to be family friendly and professional. We were the only chinese table and they treated us like the rest =) I guess all the negativity I got from other restaurants wont be found here. Awesome! Always Yelping places to eat around my house or the bf's and it's been slim pickin's to find a new place. This place was around my neighborhood and we've seen it a bunch, but never made it out. We finally went on a whatever Monday or Tuesday and there was only 2 other occupied tables there. We sat down and ordered the seafood risotto and the spaghetti with vodka sauce. The food came pretty quickly and it was pretty good, but I soon found a decently sized plastic corner piece of a bag in my food... While we appreciated the ability to enjoy our food without overbearing service, we realized that we were the only ones who received this less attentive service. We additionally noticed this when the other 3 tables around us were sat and told the specials (one of them sounded really good and I would've gotten that) and attended to more than the 3 times we got for our entire meal. I would say that it could've been because he was the only waiter for the night it seemed, but each of the other tables that came after us received what was perceived to us as "more attentive" service and we were there when it wasn't busy. Overall I might try this place again, but it would not be my first choice. read more

What an awesome find for Friday night dinner with friends/Fam. This place is no frills and all about the eats. Staff is attentive and food comes out quickly! We ordered up various plates to share and worked out well between 5 of us. Here's the entrées we polished off: - Fried calamari (fresh and tasty) - Buffalo mozzarella (amazingly good, everyone's loved it) - artichoke and mushroom pizza (super tasty) - pepperoni pizza (staple and simply delicious!) - chicken francese (tender and enjoyable, but needed more lemon) - Rigatoni bolognese (simple and good) For dessert, we went with the tiramisu (homemade and delicious!)
