This was a lovely restaurant with good food expensively priced. It remains so with over-the-top priced starters and entrees. Owner does not prepare you for surprise noise level due to parties of fifty or more in bar area that extend to the other two levels. This is cochlear implant needed noise. Shame on the restaurant for not alerting a now former client about this at the time reservation was made. We left and went to a more hospitable restaurant in the area. read more

Il Postino hostess was REALLY rude/insulting. We sat at our table at 6.15, (next to a deafening table of +/-20 people all literally yelling over each other). At 7.27pm, the hostess came up to us and said "you need to move along, I need your table." After spending over $200 for dinner for three, in a deafening restaurant, we are told in approximately one hour, time to leave. And BTW, the menu was rather odd; the waiter said "we don't put much down on the menu, just tell us what you want, and we can make it." We each asked for things (that actually were on the menu) and none of the three were available. Over a five min period when we were just sitting down, he came up to us 4 times asking to take our order. read more

Service was horrendous. it was crowded and we were put at a cramped table. I was bumped into at least 10 times. I complained and received little acknowledgement from wait staff. Finallly asked for a manager, who apologized and physically moved our table (embarrassing mid-meal) and apologized. offered to comp dessert but did not follow through. F- Will not go back. read more

The entire frontside of the restaurant opens out to the street in the summer and it makes you feel like you are in Europe. It wasn't too crowded for lunch and quite a few older Italian-American regulars were dining there. 3 stars only because I thought the food could be better but I went for restaurant week...so should try it again another time! Eight of us decided to go to II Postino for Restaurant Week for lunch and treat my Intern who was on her last day. We picked from their Prix Fixe menu, and I had; Salmone Marinato, with orange sauce Veal Scaloppine, eggplant, zucchini, and onions in a light tomato sauce Semifreddo It's a medium size restaurant with separated sections at different elevations from each other which with the decor did bring some classy elegance to the place. The sound travels here, so it's was hard to hear your own conversation because the ones at the next table interfere and I recommend not to speak of anything personal because they will know two tables down. The service was slow and not attentive, we didn't get checked on or get our water refilled for a long period of time but were charge for sparkling water when they gave us tap on refills. The Salmone Marinato was above average with the nice touch of the lemons that had little netted covers so the seeds don't come out. The Veal Scaloppine was average. And the Semifreddo was average in taste but below average on presentation because it was just a piece cut from a slab with some drizzle on top. The food did arrive in full groups so the kitchen must have a good staff. The Tiramisu Il Postino that the others had did get a lot of mmms, and yums from the table. Also the others had the Fettuccini, veal ragu pizzaiola which had too many olives but was above average still in taste when you removed them. They auto added a 21% gratuity to the bill at the end. Most likely I will not be back since I have already I been to one where the food was better 2 blocks away and I still have a half dozen other Italian restaurants within walking distances I need to try out. read more

I came here with some family members from out of town. We were greeted by 4 or 5 extremely happy Italian (like form Italy Italian) staff members who treated us like kings. To be clear, the service wasn't pushy, the waitstaff was just happy to serve us. Our appetizer was ridiculously delicious. Unfortunately, it was authentic Italian and I can't recall how to pronounce what it was. But, it was made out of fresh roasted olives, I think, and served with bread. When it was time to order, I asked the waiter if there was something on the menu that matched what I was craving. He replied "Just tell me what you want and I will have them make it for you". Eventually, I ended up ordering a crabmeat linguini pasta special that I had wanted from the get go. The pasta arrived served in the actual crab shell, with wonderfully well cooked and well seasoned crab meat with a flavorful but not heavy pasta sauce. read more

We came for restaurant week: Appetizers: - Veal : my friend who texted it jut kept saying,"this is really good" over and over. - Eggplant parm: also well portioned with eggplant to cheese ratio! Solidly flavorful - Lentil soup: we found plastic in the soup. The waiter was very nice and replaced it quickly but still... you lose a star on yelp for that Mains - Pappardelle: this was good, and I'm not usually a big fan of mushroom but it was in good portions and not overwhelming. The pasta itself was perfect!!!! Seriously!! All the main courses were fantastic! Desserts: - everything is great... EXCEPT the ice cream, which was weirdly grainy and disappointing. read more

Went here for restaurant week but was not too impressed with the food. As soon as we walked in it felt like they were annoyed we were ordering from the restaurant week menu (as opposed to the full menu). It got worse when we decided to order a glass of wine as opposed to a bottle of wine. Nonetheless, the food was good. The fish was very tender and not over cooked. Red snapper was not very flavorful however the salmon was very delicious. The best dish was the calamari and salmon ravioli- very flavorful. The calamari was fresh and sauce was not too acidic or salty - just right. The ravioli was cooked perfectly and the pink sauce was delicious. What was out of this world were the desserts- all three were very delicious and fresh. I was disappointed they ran out of tiramisu however the other desserts were amazing. Excellent lunch today! We had a couple of hours to kill for lunch while waiting for Consulate paperwork from the Consulate of Macedonia. We stumbled upon Il Postino! Excellent little place ... Very clean and very welcoming. The staff was VERY attentive from The moment walking in the door when they took off our coats. Perfect Lunch menu with 3 courses. We visited II Postino during restaurant week and I was a little underwhelmed. The dinner portions were extremely small (granted it was restaurant week, but this was more of taste testing sized portion). I had the mozzarella carrozza for my appetizer and the salmon ravioli for my entree. The flavor of both were pretty good, but again, the portions were ridiculously small. The appetizer was one triangle (think grilled cheese sandwich cut into 4 triangles, this had ONE triangle) and the ravioli came with four in the plate and no they were not large. they were barely medium sized. So by the time I started to enjoy the flavors of each course, they were finished and the meal ended up feeling incomplete. The servers were quite annoying as they were rushing every course. The restaurant was empty so there was no need for the haste. We actually had to ask them to wait for us to request dessert as they were asking to bring it out as soon as they picked up the 'dinner' plates. The only thing that saved this dining experience was the atmosphere/decor which is beyond adorable and welcoming. It is like a cute little secret hideaway tucked away in the NYC. I would love to give this place another chance because as I mentioned, the flavor of the food was pretty decent. But I am not in a rush to return in the near future. read more

Wonderful food, but at a fairly high price. I truly enjoyed everything. The fava bean salad had a flavor I hadn't expected. The Veal Ravioli was rich and perfect. The tiramisu was decadent. I was craving Italian food and quickly found this place on google. I tried to eat here around 7:30 on a Saturday evening but I had to leave before I could order as the waiters were instantly pushy and that really irritated me. I was asked 3 TIMES by 3 different employees If I wanted wine in which I answered no 3 times. This restaurant was pretty empty so the persistence seemed intentional. At that point I couldn't help but feel like these people were trying to extort me. In just the first 10 mins there I had been approached 5 times by 3 different waiters asking me if I was ready. I could not get a moment to myself to actually get through this menu. I felt so uncomfortable that I had to get up and leave. This place was empty on a Saturday evening, I should have took that as a sign. I will not bother coming here again. NYC has way too many options. read more

I've visited Il Postino on two occasions, both for dinner on a weeknight. On the first visit, I was on a date. We were seated in the main dining area and were one of the only tables that night. The service was ok, but the staff seemed a little put out. I always try to order something on the lower end of the price range when my date is paying, but that was just about impossible here. Pasta entrees were around $40 and so was the steak, so I figured I might as well get the steak. It was ok, but nothing to write home about. For the price, we could've gotten much better elsewhere. The ambience is ok, very old school. I just couldn't get over the value ratio, the quality of the food and service just didn't merit the hefty price tag. Recently, I returned during Restaurant Week to meet my parents and a family friend. We had a 6pm reservation so we weren't exactly taking up a prime time dinner spot. We ordered a nice bottle of wine for the table. When the waiter came to give us menus, he rattled off a list of specials and walked away. They hadn't given us the Restaurant Week menu. We had to wait for him to return and ask. He begrudgingly got us the menus and from that point on we were treated like second class citizens. Never mind that our bill still came to around $400. I had the mozzarella app (meh), the lasagna (actually pretty good), and the panna cotta (again, fine.) If you don't want to participate in Restaurant Week, you don't have to! It's not an excuse to be rude to your guests and it's just bad advertising. I often find places through Restaurant Week that I return to again and again, paying regular prices. It's worth treating guests with respect. Suffice it to say, I will not be returning to Il Postino. There are too many superior options. read more

What an exceptional experience!!! I was going into the city for a Billy Joel concert and decided what better way to kick off the night than with a great dinner for my fiancée. Il Postino blew it out of the water. From the moment we walked in we were welcomed and taken to our perspective table. We sat down and a beautiful spread was placed before us as we sipped some wine and ordered our entrees. I ordered a chicken parm with a side of angel hair and vodka sauce and I can easily say it was probably the best chicken parm I've had. My Fiancée ordered the Chilean sea bass with shrimp and lobster and she was extremely satisfied. We will DEFINITELY be coming back!! read more

I'm a regular at scalinatella. So i was excited to try il Postino in their new location. I couldn't have been more disappointed. We ordered a few drinks. A few salads, mushroom special, a crudo and a white truffle pasta and a dessert. When the salads came. I tilt the bowl and use my knife and scoop it into my plate. I cut a piece of cheese. And i realize It's a paper towel not cheese!!!! So i call the waiter over. And i say. Listen. I never ever ever complain But look. He's like oh my. I say. Am i wrong for saying something? He's like no. Oh my. So he comes back. And he's like. Oh. We made you a new one (like he did me a favor) and he's like what happened was, There was a napkin between the plate and the bowl. And you lifted it and it fell in your plate. I said. Ummmm NOOOO. That's not what happened. There was a paper towel in my salad and all you had to say was I'm sorry. Not blame it on me. So i get the "the customer is always right" response. Which i take as "go F yourself." So the mediocre meal continues. And when the check comes. They come back and say. Oh. What did you drink again? We forgot to add it to the check. So they had an opportunity to comp me one drink each . But no. The check comes again and every single cent is accounted for on it. Not one thing comped. Not an apology. Basically it was my fault it happened and i should be grateful they remade the salad that i didn't even want to touch. I am absolutely mortified. I will never go back read more

For food and atmosphere, my rating is 5 stars, we were a party of 4 and we all enjoyed our food. Service was 3 stars, the host and managers were friendly but the waiters could use some additional training. We had 2 waiters, 1 of whom constantly tried to sell us things we didn't want. There's an art to selling in this manner to not annoy the customer. Our other waiter had the menu memorized which was impressive but lacked people friendly skills. I used to go to Il Postino on East 49th Street. They moved to the current location on East 61st Street in 2021. We had such good culinary memories Pre-Pandemic. As is happening with so many places Post Pandemic, this restaurant lost its glamour and quality of service, including the food. Rushed to no end, the waiter even telling us that they have a very large party to attend to, and therefore we could order now or later after the party was taken care of. Now really. After being seated we waited about 20 minutes before somebody decided to come and visit us. We placed our orders. Mine arrived after about 30 minutes, my wife's 10 minutes later. We were told an assortment of vegetables, each one of us had one baby carrot and one piece of such soggy broccoli. All for the price of $ 64 each. All that waiting, all that unappetizing food, especially my wife's Bronzino. It was shocking to witness how the fish was fileted. It was done in such a hurry, small and large chunks with larger chunks of tomatoes, not the Cherry tomatoes as the waiter had so gloriously told us about. Remarkable was also that, while we were waiting for our food, a waiter came to our table with somebody else' food. That happened twice. The parade of waiters and busboys visiting us was even more stunning. The arrival of the bill was the fastest marathon we have ever witnessed. I had white truffles on the brain and read that Il Postion could take me there.. So I called and they said it's not on our menu but we can make it for you. We can make anything you like for you! After hanging up and no sooner than you could say white truffles, my phone rang. It was Il Postino calling me back saying white truffles are not in season. But they could make me something with black truffles if that was okay. Kind of dissapointed but said okay. It was cool that they called back and what the heck, better to get my truffle training wheels than to eat rotisserie chicken again. I get there and this place is fancy. I passed on the restaurant week specials that look so good and cheap. The waiter said the chef will make you 8 cheese filled raviolis with a cream sauce, and with shaved black truffles done table side. When the pasta came, he took this round hunk of black truffle from an old wooden box, like a small treasure chest, and began to shave it with a small mandolin over my pasta. I was like damn, this is Foodie Heaven with a capital F H baby! I musta looked as excited and with a dumb trance like my dog waiting for his T-bone scrap. Of the many UES Italian restaurants of higher quality, this one stands out. The chef's spot-on preparations, the variety of the menu, the warm inviting staff, the stunning location: all combine to make it my new favorite. I've now eaten here over five times so this review is based on many different experiences, all of which have been impressive. This is not an annoying, pretentious restaurant, but generous in its hospitality and thankfully not of such a decibel (like Il Mulino) that you have to scream through dinner. The wait staff is attentive without being unctuous. The chef actually cares, and often visits the tables to introduce himself. You can go decadent (osso bucco) or healthy (branzino) or anywhere inbetween. The main room in the townhouse has amazing ambiance. I can't recommend it enough! I'll skip right to the dessert. We had delicious wild strawberries with a cheesecake. The small wild strawberries from Spain were amazing. They melt in your mouth and taste incredible. A little expensive but worth it. The pastas were great too. We had the ravioli with porcini mushrooms and a pasta with shrimp. Both were good but the ravioli was better. Service was good and attentive. Restaurant decor was a little too dark for me but some may like that. read more

I remember from 49th street, there was always a problem with the bill and instead of adjusting it, they said "we will take care of you next time"! I figured to try again on 61st. Firstly, we ordered a bottle of wine, they neglected to tell us the year we picked, wasn't the one we received! Secondly, the pasta and veal dish were not on par with a typical bistro! sauces were heavy and thick and pasta was small and mediocre to be nice. They we asked for the bill took more than 25minutes to arrive! Told the waiter I was a regular at 49 th st for a while and would like to speak to the owner. I had the Osso buco and it was excellent as was the desserts. The hostess was very polite and accommodating. As this is a high-class restaurant the prices are - as well - high, well very high even for this area. I was enjoying the eating experience here; however, I will now relate the incident that marred my experience and that of my friend's permanently. Our "pressed-for-politeness" waiter went into what I can only described as a "highly controlled hissy-fit" when he received the (2) customer credit card signed slips instead of the merchant's copy from our table; my friend and I having spilt the bill on two (2) credit cards. The was barely any light at out table (which was fine for ambience) but did not allow us the proper mount to see the 9 Point-sized text at the bottom. He was rude and snotty and demanded to receive the Merchant-labeled as he glowered at us stating "It messes up my accounting." I doubt that he DID the accounting, he spent of of his off time chatting up a rather petite brunette at the bar. I can go one, but I have better manners than that gentlemen. It was not even a crowded evening and the mood of the restaurant or at least the patrons was of good spirit. I was going to say something to him, but I did not want to dignify his childish and un-professional behavior. We took our coats I slipped the hostess a $5 bill and left. The Osso bucco is to "die for"; however, I won't return to this [my] neighborhood establishment again. I wish to leave a message to the owners: "Get rid of this guy, he is the tall thin dark haired (hardly a gentle & somewhat a man)... He is the one that could not help reminding you - every time I made complimented the food - that he is native Italian [as if his accent would not give that away.] Alternatively, just relocate your establishment to the Theatre District as his behavior might actually amuse the Bridge-and-Tunnel folk. My husband loves this place -has come here several times for business. Brought me and our daughter here for dinner a couple weeks ago. It's no wonder why he enjoys it - the food is homemade, delicious and very fresh. The service is what makes the dining experience so wonderful - the servers really seem to care about what they do and want to make sure you have what you need. They don't rush you, when the restaurant was super crowded and we came in without reservations, we had drinks at the bar while we waited. The hostess was apologetic because the wait was longer than what she'd estimated. but as soon as the table opened up, they carried our drinks over to the table and got us settled in. Our appetizer (burrata - sooo creamy and delicious!!!), and salad came soon, but the entrees were taking a while, but came quickly after we mentioned it to our waiter. I think they were just trying not to rush us. I can't remember our entrees, I think it was pappardelle, braised shanks (osso buco?) but it was delicious!! The desserts were also amazing. It is a cute neighborhood restaurant serving excellent food, with amazing service. Il Postino never disappoints. The branzino is fabulous as is everything else they serve. Light and flaky cooked in wine makes this the perfect main course. The octopus for an appetizer is a "must" and the salads will meet your expectations. If you like veal, you will love this dish. Cooked to perfection. The portions are more than ample. If you have an appetizer, you can share a main course. The litmus test for this restaurant is that you always find locals dining here because it has not lost its neighborhood atmosphere. read more

Il post-coital glow? Or is my skin radiant from all of that delicious olive oil? Il Postino is a little off the beaten path for a westsider like me. First Avenue? What is that? Well worth the cab ride, this midtown east gem is nestled into a quiet block on E. 49 st. Upon entering the restaurant you are greeted by the old-world Italian staff who walk you past a table full of huge fresh portabella mushrooms, strawberries and other assorted enticing produce. Heaping breadbaskets (mmm carbs), griled veggies and some seafood salad with endives were rushed to our tables shortly after being seated for us to snack on. After helping myself to far too much processed wheat (sidenote: why do i always feel the need to kill the breadkbasket after bitching about how much thinner i wish i was!) my minestrone came. Pieces of fresh asparagus, canneloni beans and other bits of goodness dominated bowl's real estate and made for a tasty soup. My only issue was that the spoon was gigantic so I felt like I devoured the soup too quickly and less attractively. My dining companions' salads all looked delicious as well with huge lumps of fresh goat cheese, chicory and fresh cherry tomatoes gracing their plates. My chicken paillard was good - cooked nicely and yummy but not seasoned particularly well. The side salad and sliced potato were a nice accompaniment. The best thing about my dish and the others were that the portions were spot on - a good sized serving but not overwhelmingly huge. Unusual to find that "sweet spot" at NYC restaurants. Also one of my dining companions wanted as she specified "pasta with sausage and onions". While not on the menu the waitstaff were happy to accommodate her request. Cool. Dessert sample plates and espressos followed. The desserts were ok - not amazing but enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. I was annoyed that the dessert sampler was presented as a plate for the table to share and then everyone was served their own plate - not cool. Food is great here, just be careful with the peripherals - alcohol and desserts - as they're steep in price. read more

Wanted to try Il Postino for a long time and truly sorry I finally did. Pushy upselling from minute one in a room that felt like a Florida strip mall restaurant. The service was rude, condescending and the only saving grace was the food. It was delicious-the chef shouldn't suffer because the service and atmosphere is so subpar. When the bill came is was about $100 over what we thought it should have been. It was handwritten and had 2 numbers-a food total on one side and a drinks total on the other. Anywhere else we would have asked for a breakdown, but the attitude up until then made it clear it would not be worth bothering. Just wanted to get out of there and take a silkwood shower! read more

I came here with a group of 6 during restaurant week. The restaurant keeps all if its front doors/windows opened during the summer which gives it a nice atmosphere. The portions on the restaurant week menu were small but tasty. The grilled salmon with a creamy mustard sauce was superb. If you are in the area and are looking for good Italian food its a good place to grab a bite, good for big groups. However I wouldn't go uptown just for this meal. read more
