I haven't had a sauce here that's bad. Unlimited pasta for something like $6 and then you buy the sauces until you burst from delicious pasta. By the way, when people burst from eating too much pasta it turns out they look like a can of those fake beer nuts with foam snakes inside. They end up going in all directions and its pretty funny. I came here on one of the last beautiful days of summer to eat outside with my girlfriend. We were told to sit down outside, which is basically on the curb of the street. Then, no one served us. We watched table after table get served what looked to be very mediocre food, and still no one attended to us - even offered us drinks. I walked inside and asked for service but the guy didn't look like he spoke English, so I asked someone else, and they said they'd be right out. While waiting for 15 minutes, we noticed how high the prices were, realized that probably no one was going to serve us, then stood up and left. This place is awesome. My fiancé and I went for a date night and the food was phenomenal. The place is SMALL, dress code is pretty casual - we dress business casual and that was more than sufficient. Service was great, super reasonable prices for the quality and quantity of food. Only complaint is that they don't have cordials - I would have loved a glass of Amaretto to finish the meal but they only serve beer and wine. Would definitely recommend! read more

My wife and I went here last night with a couple of friends. It was their idea to go here, and after reading all the so-so reviews by fellow Yelpers, we were inclined to tell our friends to pick another place. They seemed intent on going, so we honored their wish. We showed up, hoping that we'd be served some decent bread, unlike the barely passable stuff that others have written about. Alas, it was not in the cards. They really should be ashamed of themselves for serving bread that's *maybe* one step above Wonder white bread. The salads we ordered were all fresh, but nothing to write home about. The bruschetta was passable (my wife's is *much* better, and she's not even Italian), and we all thought our main courses were good, but that's it. Between the two bottles of wine with our meals, the one appetizer, four salads, and four entrees, the total bill was just shy of $200. Not really worth it, especially when you consider how old and worn out the interior looks, and the duct tape around the window a/c unit, that wasn't keeping all the cold air out. This place deserves more credit than it gets. Let's get right down to it, shall we? Food: Pizza is AWESOME. I'm allergic to dairy so I was delighted to find a place where many of the primary pies are cheese-free! The dough is delicious: just the right balance of chewy and crispy, with delightful air pockets in the crust. Everything just tastes fresh and home-cooked, so, you don't need to overload the pizza with ingredients to get great flavor. Pasta is very good. I don't know what cheapies are calling this place "pricey" when talking about the spaghetti. You get as much as you want for $6.50, and the sauce is only a few dollars extra. Again, because the ingredients the sauce is so flavorful, you don't need to drown your noodles in it...which means that those supposedly "tiny" (aka, gravy-boat-sized) portions of sauce are absolutely enough. Unless you're a total fatty, I guess. Where else can you get delicious, bottomless pasta for $10? I haven't tried the sandwiches yet but they sound very promising. Service: When they are busy, service is a little spotty. But they recognize J and me every time we go in and they make sure to say hello, which is nice. Also very promt with water. Other: The window seats are very drafty in winter. I imagine the place would be very hot and stuffy in summer, but I don't know. Parking is a little scarce. The best part: We once went on a slow Sunday evening, and the cook serenaded the restaurant with melodies in Spanish. I loved it! More like Il Ridiculous. The first couple of times I went, we enjoyed our meals. Unlimited pasta sounds nice, although it's really unlimited overcooked spaghetti with a set amount of sauce. Still, I forgave the first time we went and were told that no table for two was available, even though over a dozen four tops were open. So we ate outside and got a little cold, while no one else came inside to fill up those four tops. Okay, well, that could be an exception. So we went back. This time, same deal, no two-person tables, we'd have to wait. Nearly empty restaurant. Two other couples inside. Service was not rude: it was hostile. I've never felt more resented as a customer. Having driven past this place literally hundreds of times, I went in for the first time last week. For sure, I will be pulling in to their little parking lot again and again. Easily the best value/food proposition so far in 2019....everything everyone ordered was first rate, and this place was not very expensive at all. We had salads, pizza, soup and several pasta entrees.....all were great. So, if you have ever thought of going here, run, don't walk there. It is a pretty great place and a great value. My wife and I have been going here for almost 7 years, I just had to respond to the negative reviews as we recently joined Yelp... seriously, this is an Italian family, if anyone doesn't know what that means you don't deserve to eat here. They yell in the back at one another.... its part of the character here, get over it. They don't hold your hand to your table, they treat you like family, not royalty, get over it. Their pastas are excellent, pizzas are good, and desert (zabaglione especially) is terrific. My first visit to this restaurant was about a week ago. We came in late, yet the staff assured my cousin and I that they were still open. This was the start of a meal laden with terrible service. We took a minute to order a pizza, which they never served us until we decided to serve it to ourselves. The pizza was okay, nothing special. I've only been once so far, but it was amazing. Went with three other people and two of us got endless pasta with two different sauces, two got entrees. We all sampled each others. The lasagna was outstanding, highly recommended. The two sauces we had were Bolognese and Amatriciana and I'd get both again, though there's so many others to try I might experiment more. Now the downside - the location isn't my favorite, the building looks run-down, and though the cleanliness of the plates and tables was fine, the whole place looked like it needed a good cleaning and some renovation. Don't let that sway you though... the food is truly outstanding, at least the time we went. And for the price it's worth a try. The service was really good when I was there so I have no complaints there. One last note - the people we went with have since returned and said it was awful the next time they went, so I suspect they have a consistency issue. read more

I used to go to Il Radicchio occasionally when I lived in Court House. Good food for the price, I really liked the pasta with the pick-your-own sauces, very tasty! The bread was OK, service was good. The décor is nothing to write home about, but that's OK. As with anything in this stretch of Arlington, parking can be difficult if you are driving in, and not very convenient to metro. It took 15 minutes to get our drink order, 1 hour to get our food, and they had run out of bread. On a Saturday night. Food was OK when it finally came, except for the fact that I received the wrong pizza. I had ordered the prosciutto and rucola, but I was given a pizza with yellow peppers and Italian sausage. I sent it back and the exact same pizza came back, except with arugula and prosciutto on top of the Italian sausage and peppers, I discovered. First off- Il Radicchio is no longer accepting restaurant.com certificates! They mentioned that this has been a big problem lately because the website won't take them down- so a fair warning to those thinking of using one! Second off- I love this little place. My husband and I went this week for a nice cozy dinner and, as per usual, I was not disappointed. "The radish" is a no frills establishment- you are there for good sauces and good service and I always get both. My favorite is the spaghetti menu- like an ice cream bar for pasta. You get a big bowl of noodles and then pick a few sauces to pour over them. Quite honestly, I'm not italian so I can't tell you the fancy name of the sauces I chose- but they were GREAT. A white sauce with leeks and sausage, a red sauce with shrimp, artichokes, and mushrooms- amazing! I never even make it close to eating all the pasta they provide. In terms of the service I can't believe people have complained. We had 2-3 waiters check in on us a fair amount. After not eating the tomatoes in one of our entrees the chef even came over to make sure nothing was wrong with them (there wasn't we just dont like tomatoes!). I've brought visiting friends to this establishment and there are always rave reviews. In the end- this is definitely a place a recommend when you're looking for some low-key hearty food. read more

Bad. Visiting from Ohio. 20 minute wait for menus, 30 minute wait for menus, kids waited 40 minutes for milk and an hour for bread. Got the excuse that the kitchen is overwhelmed from overbooking but all the other tables around us are being catered to consistently. An hour and a half later the we got our food, but no more bread, they are out. Oh and im still sitting here with no water and vinegar based pasta sauce. Awful. Never again. Affordable, delicious and very generous proportions - The three things I base my food decisions on and this place has all three. Last Sunday my buddy and I tried II Radicchio after hearing friends rave about their pizza and never ending spaghetti. I love paninis so I ordered the spit-roasted chicken one. It was HUGE, way better than Cosi's and Panera's. I wanted some wine and the waitress recommended Montepulciano, paired great. I also ordered tiramisu, delicious. The bread was awful, tasted like if it was store-brand Italian bread off the shelf, and the pasta did not taste fresh. We used to frequent Il Radicchio because of the low-key ambience and good home style Italian cooking. It seems like the restaurant has undergone a major change. The ambience, service and food have gone downhill. I can only imagine that it is under new management. The ambience was negatively affected by two customers (or friends of staff) who were drinking canned buds that they brought into the restaurant. The salad was way over-sauced and lacked the balance of the past. The pasta sauces were mediocre and lacked the traditional and homestyle care of the previous chef. Usually, the restaurant is pretty busy on most nights of the week. We were surprised to see it pretty empty so evidently the word had gotten around. Based on this experience, we will never return. read more

Very cute little Italian place! Our server was great and very friendly. They were out of the short ribs, which sounds like it might happen a lot, based on other reviews. My ravioli was delicious! I went back to Il Radicchio this past weekend with the family and am happy to say that everything I loved about this place the first time around still impressed. I couldn't bring myself to order something different so I ordered the gnocchi again and it was just as delicious. I tasted my mom's the artichoke ravioli which was equally delicious and what I will be getting next time. I'm surprised by the other reviews mentioning slow service because even on a busy Friday night, I never felt like we waited long for our food and eventually our check. This place is still my favorite Italian restaurant in the DMV, so much so that I chose this restaurant to meet my girlfriend's grandparents. We all got the unlimited pasta with different sauces. It's perfect since you all can share and taste a variety of options. The host was very friendly, we had lots of questions, we're picky when it comes to food, and he brought out the chef to explain each sauce and pasta to us. I've never gone to a restaurant and met the chef before. It was busy like last time and the host was helping serve us the food so we didn't have to wait long at all. He knows lots about wines which made it easy for pairing. The romantic ambiance (sort of dimly light with traditional Italian music) will be where I take my gf for Vday. Wow!!! I'm surprised Il Radicchio has such a high rating. I can't imagine ANYONE saying the pasta is "amazing'; it's completely over cooked. They serve the pasta alone with oil on it and give you the sauce sperately. I stupidly ordered the carbonara even though it was written that the sauce and pasta were served seperately. Carbonara has to be maded with the sauce on it because raw egg is added and the heat from the pasta cookes it while its stired. Obviously no egg was used in the carbonara receipe here. Also, the "prosciutto or meat" they used was a step above spam. I would not recommend Il Radicchio to anyone. For the prices, you would think the food quality would have been a bit higher. read more

You can build your own bowl of pasta by choosing a pasta type, a sauce, and add-ons such as pancetta, meatballs, or broccolini, or you can order one of their specialty pastas such as artichoke ravioli with caramelized onions, goat cheese, and mushroom ragu. It's not among the best Italian food I've had, but it's solid. We've had less luck with the meat-centric dishes. Bottom line: service was great, food was meh, and wine was great. We were cautiously optimistic after reading the reviews, but the service was very nice. We went on a Saturday night, with a Groupon. The waitress was timely and said we could use the Groupon for wine, which was clearly excluded in the fine print. The food: I think they buy Del Monte pasta in bulk (the white flour cheap stuff). Not high quality there. They ask that you purchase the pasta separately (supposedly bottomless but unless you are training for a marathon, who can eat that much pasta?). Then you have to purchase sauces separately. My lamb ragu was oily and fatty and definitely not ragu. My fiancee's pesto was better, but still very oily. We tried to get the mushroom sauce, but they had discontinued it some time ago but had not updated their menu. The radicchio and arugula salad with goat cheese was ok. The raspberry vinaigrette was almost definitely from a bottle. Presentation was sloppy--they put the salad greens in a bowl and turned the bowl upside down on the plate. Then drizzled some dressing on top. You had to toss it yourself. The wine: cheap and good. Have not tried the pizza or sandwiches so cannot comment on that. read more

Like a few others, I went to this restaurant half expecting rude service but good food. I found our waiter to be anything but rude. He was friendly enough and very efficient. As for the food, we were served bread, salad, pizza and a Diet Coke. Nothing wrong with the soda. It was in a can so no way to mess that up. The salads matched the ambiance (nothing fancy or spacious) but the balsamic vinegrette dressing was flavorful. The best item easily was the pizza since I found the bread to be near tasteless and dry, though my wife wasn't quite as critical about it. Overall, I will return, next time to try the pasta. There must be at least one sour employee or manager here that chases away customers but for me, so far so good. read more

Il Radicchio would have never crossed our radar were we not living about 10 steps away. It's solid- things are pretty cheap and you can luck into a good meal. The unlimited pasta ($6, then you pay by the sauce bowl) is fun, and I love some of their pizza combos (rosemary, mozzarella, and chopped tomato- yum!). Solid neighborhood Italian -- great food at reasonable prices. I brought 3 friends visiting from Manhattan and they agreed with me that the food is solid for what they are aiming to provide. Everyone liked the various types of bruschetta and the bottle of Chianti we shared. Pasta sauces were good too. One small knock is that the spaghetti noodles are a bit thick - and this is one of their main offerings, but maybe they have angel hair too.
