Had a bad experience 2 weeks ago thought I would give this place another chance. Went last night and had yet another horrible experience. Salsa had a weird taste and lettuce was bad. Chips were stale and chicken was Burnt to the point were it was super hard and crunchy couldn't even eat had to spit it out. My first 2 times were amazing, don't understand why I had such horrible experience the last 2 times I came, maybe new crew idk I hope someone will get back to me so I can change this review and want to come back until then I recommend staying far from this place. read more

Went there after going to Halloween party. My wife like the tacos there. The restaurant is really excellent and has wonderful setting, Very welcoming place too. A bit crowded when we went there recently. The food there is really fantastic and great selection of food. The burrito bowl and tacos is very flavorful. Fresh vegetables and great quality of meat. Omg, I LOVE Illegal Pete's and their chill, punk rock vibe. We were taking the train to the airport and wanted to find some good grub/waste time before heading out. I searched local, reasonably priced (or cheap) joints and up popped Pete's. We always need food joints that serve veg/nonveg so Pete's is great, cheap and yummy. I had a veggie burrito with all the fixins, while my boo chowed down on the chicken burrito. Both were massive and flavorful and the staff were very accommodating and helpful. This will be my new routine before leaving Denver, stopping in Pete's and skipping the costly airport prices and limited choices. read more

Having lived across the street for a few years now,I'm grateful that Morgan and Justin still work here. With all the Mexican choices around LoDo, these two are the reason I still come here vs. other restaurants and bars. Came here absolutely starved after a long hike up in Boulder and GABF the night before. I had heard a lot of good things about Illegal Pete's and wanted to try a local establishment so this hit the spot. I ordered a steak bowl which to my pleasant surprise came with a hearty supply of lettuce (places like this usually skimp on the lettuce--they trying to make us fat yo!). There was a Broncos game on as I was eating and it was totally fun being from out of town to experience what it's like to be in a Denver eatery during football season. The fans are unlike any others I've seen! Anyways, back to the food... The steak was perfectly cooked and went really good with the rice & guac. Since going to this location, I have also visited the location closer to home in Tucson, AZ. I learned there about their Baja-style meals and became an instant fan! If rice and beans aren't your fav, you may want to check this option out. Very rare is it for a restaurant to be consistently great in every aspect, from the quality of food, the taste of that food and related ingredients, and then also the service. This location absolutely slays it. Quite often, I'm ordering online directly or through a delivery service for pickup, so that I can catch transit across the street and bring the food home. Every time in the last few months, my order has been ready ahead of time, packed with care and the ingredients are fresh, flavorful and plentiful. Literally there is never a future reason for me ever to go to one of the chain fast casual Mexican food restaurants, especially in downtown Denver nearby. So thank you for doing a great job with multiple food items especially recently on an order in which I was picking up on the way home from the airport. Illegal Pete's has become a staple in my eating around town life. I wouldn't call it authentic Mexican, but they make several salsas, and use more ethical meats. Some days I want to drown myself in their queso. My standard order is a carnita burrito, plus either a side of queso, or gauc. They also have a solid happy hour here, with drink specials, and you get free chips and salsa with a bar order during that time frame. Illegal Pete's is also open quite late, which means when I need food, after a late flight I can grab some to go and enjoy a burrito cuddle at home. My favorite salsas are the fresca, and the extra hot here- which is spicy!!! read more

Illegal Pete's LoDo is a foundational part of the neighborhood. The food is fast and delicious, and the staff is incredible. They're all friendly and very chill. The location is very easy to get in and out of in a rush, and the food is classic Denver. It's also a great place to hang out for a while and enjoy a beer (or a few) with your food. That's why anytime I have friends visiting from out of town, we always end up here. You have to try the Baja Fish tacos or burritos if you like fish. It has so much flavor. Burritos are my favorite food in the world. I'm not a critic - i love burritos and want every single one to be awesome. This visit was no exception. In fact, i just got out of a 10 day camping trip and i was yearning for my favorite flavors. Sadly, this one was so bland it's almost unimaginable. In all honestly, i had to grab a bag of chips to see if my taste buds were working (a quick Covid check - loss of taste is a symptom). Anyways, it was fast, cooked properly, and clean. After reading all the great reviews I really expected more! Maybe I caught them on a bad day? I'm only visiting so I won't have time to give them a second chance unfortunately. Like everyone else said, it's a Chipotle style build your-own-burrito/taco/bowl setup. The atmosphere is cooler since its set up like bar and actually has a full service bar. Everyone was nice, the toppings guy was extra attentive and explained everything well. Kudos to him for hooking it up with the perfect amount of sauce, sour cream, onions, and cilantro! Other than that, the food was just ok. I got three tacos in order to try their different meats- chicken, steak, and pork. I saw someone else get fish and those looked tasty. But the meat I got was cooked well but rather flavorless. My biggest complaint has to be the flour tortillas that are used. I found it to be too dough-y. Just thick and really took away from the rest of the ingredients. Every bit I took I tasted dough more than anything. I ended up just eating all the fillings with a fork. Everyone else on Yelp! Seems to love the burritos. If I ever came back I might try a burrito. But honestly it was an ok experience and I don't really feel compelled to return. read more

This place was great. My daughter and I wanted some sort of Tex-Mex and this looked like it was the closest. She had the Shredded Beef Tacos and I had the Fish Tacos. Let me say we were so happy to find this place! She completely enjoyed her nachos, she was unable to finish them off as the serving was huge! The Fish Tacos did not disappoint either. If you are a fish taco or nacho fan, this is the place to be. Oh, and the customer service was on point. Thank you for making our Denver visit wonderful. We will be returning to Illegal Pete's. I've been a "Pete's" fan for more than 15 years - it's been a lunch and dinner fav. I've had everything from burritos to quesadillas. It's always been fresh and delicious. The staff keeps me coming back too. Super friendly and kind from day one to the present - some of the nicest people you'll meet. I'm comfortable here as is my girlfriend and her 9 year old. Good Tex Mex at a reasonable price. My workers and I really enjoyed our meal here. We came here on a busy snowy day and we were out in 30 minutes. The servers are really knowledgeable of the food. Heard about Illegal Pete's a couple of months ago and decided to check it out. "The Hill" in Boulder is the home of the original Illegal Pete's since 1995. The food is basic TexMex fare served hot and fast in a 'Chipotle' style. We ordered the Chicken Nachos, Baja Style Fish Tacos, and some Guacamole and Chips. The atmosphere is fun and festive (we arrived at the start of Happy Hour) . The staff is fast and friendly. The food is fresh, hot, and plentiful for the price. Our only real complaint was a lack of seasoning and spice - they do have commercial hot sauces available, but a nice red or green pico de gallo would have been much better. Overall, it was a fun and satisfying meal on our quest to eat our way through Boulder. read more

Super cool location coming straight from union station after a flight from Austin.it was snowing quite a bit. This is when and where I decide to plop down and grab a bite, a drink, and work. So illegal Pete's is one of my favorite places to eat but their breakfast burritos are half the size they use to be and still cost almost $7.00. They put barely any egg in the burrito and then when you ask for some more they look very annoyed with you. As someone who comes to Illegal Pete's on a weekly basis I'm not sure what has been going on lately. I have had to take things back and say is this for real?! Hopefully this message is received and they go back to their normal portions because the breakfast burritos are great but I'm not paying $7 for a half filled burrito. As of today (early this am) we all got sick, nausea, diarrhea & awful stomach pains. We were all feeling well prior, no alcohol was consumed. Illegal Pete's is a great place to go for some great food and quick service. The menu is easy to read, the people are friendly, and the ambiance is welcoming. This particular location is downtown and right off of a bus line with easy access to the mall. When we went to Illegal Pete's we ordered two orders of nachos, both vegetarian, one with black beans and the other pinto. We were able to choose our toppings which included pico, corn salsa, sour cream, and cheese. That was in addition to the delicious nacho cheese. I loved how many items I could choose from. As a vegetarian, menus can be very limiting. My other favorite part about Illegal Pete's is the staff.
