While visiting Bakersfield to visit family I got a 3 days pass with a friend who is a member. While arriving we were greeted immediately and told what I needed to do to get a workout. HORRIBLE. This place has been on a steady decline over the past years. Your car will be broken into, seen it happen 2 times last year, the gym will not help you see the cameras or anything. Machines switched to cheaper brand ones that have horrible resistance profile, then they break and won't be fixed until upper management comes around. Literally weeks without repairs until they have inspections coming. Most treadmills have broken pieces or off. The leg extension machine has a loose bolt for months now. The good machines replace w cheap matrix machines. Sauna (which use to be the best sauna location) constantly down because members pouring water on it. Male members sexually targeting women and TEENS. I know this guy that goes whisper to his friend "she going to be bad when she gets older" that guy about 50 years old. The locker rooms smell like urine and water faucet missing the knobs, the paper towel missing, which reminds me they rarely stock up the towels to clean the machines. We now use paper instead of the cloth rags. The machines always taken from either elderly people who do 500 reps for 30 sets or middle age women gossiping instead of using the machine as intended, literally just sit on the machine talking on the phone. No one re racks their weights, so after the ego lifters leave 10 plates on the leg press they take off and leave it up to the next person to reset, which brings me to why the machines break frequently, one of the reason is because a lot of people slam the weights on the cables/machines for no apparent reason, they would do about 30 pounds of the machine and just let it drop from top to bottom so everyone could hear it, why? Not sure. Now with the point system, before you accumulate enough points via check ins at the club, you able to get enough points to buy a water bottle, energy drink or something, but now they switch it to basically nothing. Points only good to join raffles. Staff are friendly people that's all I could say that's good about the place. Now the worst part of it now is how ridiculously they rise the prices, about $60 a month with only access to one club with no additional perks and $20 per additional person you add to your membership (which isn't so bad), now compare to BodyXchange which is down the street from this gym, is $25 for access to all 5 locations. They have new and functional equipment such as a Hack Squat, lying curl machines, multiple squat racks, a hip thrust machine, working threadmills, air power hand dryer, multiple cable machines and is nearly not as crowded as In-Shape, but that could depend on the time I go. Not here to promote any gym but just point it out how much of your money is going to waste coming to Inshape at Oswell. After years of membership, my Mother passed away and I called to cancel her membership that she has not been using much if any for quite some due to a prolonged illness. I was informed that they would take care of that for me but that I would have to continue paying for 30 more days. The individual who answered the phone was helpful, but not empowered to truly resolve anything more than a basic issue without Managerial approval. I requested a call from management, which did not happen. The original employee did call me back and informed me that the cancelation could be implemented immediately if I could produce a death certificate. Really! For a gym membership for a long time member? Your management sucks and I would strongly encourage anyone who reads this that might be looking for a gym to look elsewhere! This gym has group cycling, Les Mills Sprint, Beatz Ride and Freestyle Ride! And I love it soooo much! We have the best trainers like: Megan, Trisha ,Cinda, Dietrich, Kathy, Jake, and so many more! Seriously, these trainers work you like if you were one-on-one they are passionate and hard core. I always leave the gym feeling so accomplished that when I'm about to over eat I have my trainers in the back of your mind like, "I just got my booty handed to me should I really have that extra taco ? Sometimes I make the right choice but sometimes I have that other taco or two and it's okay because cycling classes burn up to 600 calories a ride! They also have other amazing classes like Zumba, Pop Pilaties, Aqua Circut, Bodypump, Yoga,RIPPED, and Silver Sneakers circut. I have chosen to stick with cycling but I have seen the Zumba classes and Bodypump and I kid you not people line up outside half an hour before the class starts! All these classes are part of the membership no additional charge! Memberships are a good price too! They have everything most folks need to start working out or getting back in the groove. Okay, let me preface my review by stating I am a former manager of this location, and In-Shape management for 9 years. In that time, the clubs I ran were guilty of the some of the things I will point out, and I am proud of a few things I seen tonight. First, I was pleasantly surprised to see my former employee Priscilla working the front desk. She is, and has always been awesome, and the reason I was surprised was because she was the opening front desk rep for me for all 4 years at this location, so to see her closing the gym was definitely a change. Glad to chat with her about her almost one year-old son. The stretching and circuit training area was clean and organized, and the cardio machines were also pretty clean. Very glad to see that they have installed several new stairmills, and I'd like to see new treadmills soon. After my run, I went to the weight room and the dumbbell rack was nearly empty in the 10-50 lb section. Found a bunch of them in the machines. Overall I enjoyed my visit and the gym was clean. I will always come to this gym, and consider my comments as constructive criticism to get management all the resources they need to make the improvements. ****update**** I've been back to the gym in the past month several times at different times of the day. I've update my review due to the cleanliness in the early morning, new spin bikes, and the new TRX wall they made after eliminating offices. I've been a member of this gym for a few years now. The amenities here are maintained but sometimes they can do more. Equipment is continuously kept at its best and staff are nice and attentive when you have inquiries and requests. This gym has pools, sauna, steam room, 3 areas with free weights, weight machines and group exercise room. Plenty for all members to share, however, it feels like it's not enough during rush hour. But hey, they also have good spin/sprint classes especially at 5:15 in the morning. A plus for me since I work early mornings. So why the 3 star? Well, their group exercise room for me is an injury waiting to happen. I like to join Zumba every once in a while but the linoleum is just too sticky for dancing. Women's locker/shower/bathroom had constant issues; it's is either dirty, old and rotting sink accessories or running out of supplies. Basically, the locker rooms needed an upgrade or some TLC. Basically, I have a love and hate relationship with this gym. Sometimes it drives me crazy yet most of the time it makes me feel good. They just remolded but their treadmills have yet to be updated. At one point I counted 9 treadmills out of order. Then, the treadmills that do work have a loose band and it feels like I'm one sprint away from Tearing an ACL on those treadmills. I recently cancelled my membership after refusal to handle SEXUAL ASSAULT allegations in the KIDS CLUB at this location. I've spoken to the General Manager and the evening Shift lead. There has been zero attempt to return my phone calls as I've checked in numerous times to see if they had a chance to look over the cameras. This was brought to their attention on the 17th of September. I was not let aware after speaking with the evening shift lead that I needed to file an incident report. That was filed a few days later with the General Manager two days later on the 19th. Nothing has been done. As much as I love this location, I would rather drive 15 minutes to a different gym to prevent my 3YR OLD daughter from being sexually assaulted in the gym daycare. Terrible business. read more

Myself and my wife are members at in shape, health club. We pay about $80 a month for both of us. We use the Oswal in bakersfield California location. We swim there between 3 and 5 days a week. The pool has been closed for the last two and a half weeks because they had to replace two water pumps, Now the heater is out and who knows how long it's gonna take him to get it fixed. At least 2 and a 1/2 more weeks. I feel they should refund our money until they can get the pool fix, I would not recommend any of my family or friends to join Inshape health club. I'm back to the gym. In-shape has opened a few of their establishments. I set a reservation at the Oswell location. I must say, very clean and organized. Worst gym in Bakersfield Ca if you're Mexican don't even think about going because you will quickly be racially profiled by the manager. I was a member for over 8 Years and paying every month for 8 years. Just so the manager could kick me out and call the cops and have me arrested over a $2 energy drink. He accused me of stealing but I was a member of 8 years and explained to the front desk that I was going to grab the energy drink and run to the bathroom. I could not be more satisfied with the gym at Oswell. The gym has all of the staples, including treadmills, dumbbells, and weight machines. It also has some extras like a dry sauna, steam room, and a pool. The service is amicable and I definitely don't have any complaints. This gym is gross and dirty and the "women's section" has the oldest machines, the plates stick to each other causing you to lift more weight then what you have pinned. The spa was broken for over a month the same stair master for 4 months and now the other stair master has been broken for a month. It's ran into the ground and not even kept clean, there was gum stuck inside 2/4 treadmills in the women'a section, I told someone at the front desk and the next day the gum was still there. There's sand/grit or just dirt in the spa, hand grips are old a deteriorated leaving sticky goop on you, corporate must know their gyms are shit too because they don't even have a 1800 number to be found I've emailed twice, once in may and once in august and never got a response, it's also the most expensive gym in town beside a boutique gym. With the most restricted hours. I have both planet fitness and body exchange memberships Both are cheaper with longer hours newer equipment and cleaner facilities, in shape is the only gym with a pool and kid care or else I'd cancel my 14 year long membership. The gym itself is tolerable, few disagreements with other members have happened for me and I've gotten used to the plates sticking on some machines. But I find it really I professional how some of the workers do not seem to respect that they are at work, to work. I have seen on numerous occasions where staff go into the parking lot and get high and then go back into work like nothing happened. It seems very unsafe to allow those under the influence to continue working instead of sending them home for the day. read more

I literally just got a membership from here and the front desk told me that small gym bags were not going to be allowed on the floor and only Fanny packs were allowable. Excuse me, I have all my workout equipment in there. Are they seriously going to have me either go back and forth from the lockers or carry all my gym equipment from station to station which is more hazardous. Mind you I have a few leg bands, gloves, water, phone, wallet, wrist straps, and cable attachments. It's only a small backpack too. Seriously considering just canceling. The hours are reduced too and prices are better at other gyms. This has been an ongoing issue since before the pandemic too, they told me before that size was allowable. read more

The management has taken definite steps to correct many of the issues I wrote about in my earlier 1-star review, including improving the overall customer experience with the staff. I have seen the manager in house now several times over the past month, and fewer machines are under repair than has been the case for months. The locker situation has also improved substantially. They could still utilize space better, but I was told the Oswell location was at the end of the list for renovation, which is what it would take to fix the wasted space that currently exists. It would also be nice if it wasn't quite so warm in the main area...last I heard, I thought exercise physiologists recommended a cooler gym environment for better performance. read more

My children aNd I go to the gym for the swimming pool. Most of the time the pool has a few people in it and other times it is all ours. My only complaint is that at times the water isn't as clean as I would hope for. Same thing with the spa. But the heat does feel really good on those sore muscles. read more

It really meant a lot to me normally I don't talk to anyone, but she took the initiative to not only green me,sont but my daughter. She's very friendly not just to me, but to everyone. That's Great!! This gym is very nice!! They have a friendly staff and they also offer classes such as Zumba and the bike class. Here are some tips to coming to this gym! The gym does get very packed like SUPER PACKED! Unless you come at 4 am like me lol then your going to be packed in! So come in with a workout that is flexible and stay active doing something because if not your just gonna waste your time! Also, they charge for towel service but don't bother because these towels are hard and they are not the best with being the cleanest towels around. Lastly, they offer child care! For saving money wait until they have specials like holidays to sign up if you want to avoid the 100 dollar start up fee! I come here to get my work out on. I'm lucky enough to be able to come during the slow hours so I don't have too many people in my way. It's nice and pretty clean here, everyone's nice, and all the machines are functional. They have a room for different classes(Zumba, a geriatric class, hip hop dance class), there's a cycling group room for their classes, there's a room for women but they cant legally say its just for women but you can tell; thats where the women go that prefer to work out around just women. And there is one other room that you can tell is mostly catered to men; this is where all the heavy iron and free weights are, but of course male or female you can work out wherever you like. They have lots of weight machines, free weights, elypticals, bikes,treadmills, yoga mats, and mirrors to check yourself out lol The treadmills,bikes and elypticals all have the tvs connected to them, as long as you continue to move you can hear it with your headphones(if you don't bring your headphones you can read the caption on about 12 different tvs). There's also a tanning bed, steam room,sauna, and swimming pool. The shower, toilets, and changing room are all located in the locker room. You can reserve/rent a locker of just use any free one but you have to bring your own lock. They have plastic bags for wet or dirty clothes in the shower area. If you need a trainer they have plenty. Water fountains are located all over the gym but they also have water bottles for sale, sports drinks and protein drinks too. And of course what gym doesn't have their personal stuff for sale-towels,shirts, hats, shorts etc. read more

This is the In-Shape I most frequent. I love the classes there and the instructors have been great! I downloaded the app and am always checking to see what classes they offer to plan my workouts. I've been meaning to do more--but so far I dig spinning and body pump! If you take a class make sure to get there a little early to set up and get a spot in the room. Sometimes they are packed. I have noticed that other gyms in Bakersfield, that are probably more popular and newer do have better class equipment-like weights and bikes. This is slightly irritating. No, the gym isn't that big (compared to others in town) but I'm always able to find a machine and the weights I need if I'm not taking a class. The workers are nice and the gym is clean. Plenty of TVs too in the cardio area. The free weight room is out of sight, which is nice. There is also a circuit area and women's only workout area. Lots of areas to switch up your workout routine! read more

I joined the gym 5 months ago and it has been a great experience. The gym is big enough that there is a wide variety of equipment and services that include: a sauna, pool, tanning beds, child care, fitness classes, spinning classes, a circuit workout, a womans section, a variety of machines, free weights and TRX suspension training system. Best of all they have personal trainers and my trainer Tony is GR-R-REAT! Since I began the sessions 5 months ago, I have lost 14 pounds, lost 1% in body fat, 2.5 inches in my chest, 3.5 inches in my waist, 1 inch in my hips and as icing on the cake, I have gained 1.25 inches in each arm and leg. He changes up the routine just as you are plateauing and this allows for maximum gains. There has not been a week were I have not become stronger. I really like that even at peak hours, you can find an open treadmill, stair climber or elliptical.
