India Grille is the go-to Indian style restaurant in or around Wilmington, Delaware. I like the restaurant because (1) the food is great, (2) the waitstaff is friendly and responsive, and (3) it's byob. In sum, I highly recommend it. Some quick background on the restaurant: The owner, Muhammad, is a Bangladeshi man that previously owned another Indian restaurant on the Kirkwood highway. After operating that restaurant for a few years, he decided he wasn't 100% satisfied with the quality of the dishes offered, so he moved back to Bangladesh for a year to hone his craft--he was successful. Care and thought are reflected through the tastiness of all the dishes I've tried at India Grille. I enjoyed every dish I've tried at India Grille. Note that I've only been there for dinner, and, thus, I can't speak on the lunch buffet or the take out experience. I have tasted the (1) matar paneer, (2) tandoori chicken, (3) chicken tikka, (3) lamb kebab, and (4) the garlic naan. In regards to the complaints about the food being excessively spicy, I wouldn't pay them much mind for the following reasons. In the times I've been there, the waitstaff has always made a point of asking what what level of spiciness, between one and ten, I want my dishes prepared. If you don't want your food prepared spicy, specify you want it at a "one" level. Additionally, in my first trip there, in a fit of cockiness, I ordered the food at a seven level and it was a tad too hot. We mentioned it in passing to the waiter, and he immediately brought out yogurt for me to drizzle on the hot dishes as I saw fit, thereby eradicating any heat problem. Lastly, it's Indian food, it comes with the territory, right? As I mentioned above, the waitstaff is outgoing and personable. The owner always takes the time to graciously welcome us when we arrive there. His son (also named Muhammad) jokes around with the patrons and is amiable. Everyone is attentive. Last time I was there, I asked the owner if he offered any Bangladeshi food from the area grew up in Bangladesh, and he gave me some recommendations of Bangladeshi food he would prepare for me on my next trip. I gave it four stars because it's a quality Indian style restaurant with good people working there. I've been fortunate to travel and I've had very good Indian food. Compared to places in London or New York, India Grille may not come out on top, but it's the best I've had in this area by far. Hats off to India Grille. read more

Happened to be in the area and stopped by for lunch buffet. I have tried many Indian lunch buffets and this was the worst so far! Food was unattended and cold. Chicken Tikka Masala had no flavor, nor did any of the other offerings. Dessert which was gulab jamun (which is usually my favorite) was not edible. Please keep in mind, I am not a big Indian fan, but went along with others ordering from this place; otherwise, perhaps I would have given a half point or so more. The main reason I do like Indian food is that I do not like spiciness. I ordered the Lamb Saag mild, and it was still a good step or two too spicy for me. Really disappointing. Called in an order for pickup and was told it'd be 30 minutes. Arrived 45 minutes, fully expecting my food to be cold, but to my surprise it was still not ready and I was asked to take a seat. Ten more minutes pass and with no sign of my order bring ready and no employees in sight, I poke my head behind the curtains near the kitchen and inquire, reminding the guy that it's been nearly an hour at this point. He starts yelling at the guy who took the order, as if that would satisfy me (uh, he's not the one preparing the food and so humiliating him isn't helpful). This place has wonderful food and they are incredibly accommodating. When I asked which dishes could be made vegan, the owner (I presumed he was the owner) gave me a list. Great, authentic Indian food. I liked the chips and sauces. The service was great. The nan was kind of greasy like fried dough though. Not puffy and bread-like, as I've had in other places. I ordered medium spiciness and it was pretty hot. Next time I will order mild. There were 2 gnats hovering around. I had a mediocre experience here before, the food was too spicy. My family was visiting, so we decided to go here again. I asked for my dish (butter chicken) about a 6/10 spicy-ness. It tasted like pure hot chili paste. The flavor was very 'flat' (not complex heat), butter chicken is not suppose to be a 'spicy' dish, but i wanted a little kick. It was un-edible. The kind waiter requested that the chef 'fix' it, I think they just added yoghurt. "Taj Mahal" down Naaman's road has much better food, any option would be better than here. Never returning. PS The rest of my family's meals were a mixed bag, even though they had asked for it not spicy (around a 3/10 spicyness.) India Grille has a pretty good lunch buffet. There are plenty of vegetarian items in addition to non-vegetarian items. I haven't had any issues with the service and always get treated well. I definitely don't leave hungry. The price is a little high compared to what I'm used to in Philadelphia, but it doesn't break the bank. read more

Great restaurant. A bit pricey but food portions are good. I like the buffet which is around 13 bucks per person. They have a big selection. At least 7 to 10 entrees...desserts....sauces....salad and appetizers. I recommend the Mango Lassi and rice pudding...both excellent but the lassi is a bit rich and thick. Nice service too. I got take out from here over the weekend. Service was prompt; when you order on the phone, they ask if you want your food mild or spicy. If you say spicy, they ask how spicy on a scale of 1-10. I thought this was really cool because I don't like my Indian food mild but full blown spicy is too much for me; I told them 6 and it was just right. The flavors of the food was pretty good. The naan was really bready, though, which I wasn't crazy about. My boyfriend got the chicken tikka masala and was happy with it. I got the chicken makni and was not happy. Half the chicken in my dish was either charred outer pieces that were barely edible, or full of cartilage. I'm talking at least 6 cartilage joints in one dish. I stopped counting after a while. I ate one by accident and found it annoying. When I found myself crunching on a second one, I tried to find by cutting up the meat into tiny pieces. I shouldn't have been able to find more. I don't know about you, but when I order out, part of it is because I don't feel like dealing with chicken joints when cooking. The charred meat I could deal with, but cartilage? More than just a few pieces? Did I get all the reject pieces or something? C'mon. That's unacceptable. Overall, I've had better. Much better. Flavors were fine, the rice was actually really good, but I can't get past spending $14 to eat cartilage with my chicken. I won't be coming back. read more

My wife, kids and I all love this place. The staff is all very nice an attentive, especially the younger male waiter. The prices are good (we like the chicken tikka masala and the lamb kadai) and it's BYOB. We are always happy when we eat here. I'll be honest and say that I've only eaten at this place once and haven't gone back. Not because it's bad but because of moving. But I can honestly say they have the hottest food I've ever eaten in my life! I tried to eat the chicken curry, when the waiter asked how hot I usually say hot and have no issues. This time was quite different though, I received a flaming inferno style chicken curry and I realized my mistake after one bite. I physically couldn't eat the dish without making myself violently ill. I tend to hiccup when I encounter spice and the curry, I swear almost killed me through hiccups.
