This is my go to place. I've tried just about every Indian restaurant in the cities this place is the best. I order from bitesquad four times a month. This is one of the finest Indian restaurants in St.Paul. They have a nice lunch buffet with 2-3 vegetarian curries and a couple or more meat curries. Appetizers vary daily. Also, there's mixed fruit custard and rice pudding for dessert. On Fridays, they have 2 additional desserts Gulab Jamun and Gajar Halwa. YUM!!! That's a lot food before heading back to work for a nice nap. The staff is great and the place is clean.I haven't tried their dinners yet but will surely do one of these days. Indian is hands down my favorite type of cuisine, and in my opinion this is the best Indian food in the Twin Cities. That's a lot from me. I am an Indian food aficionado. Their chutneys are amazing. The naan is fresh and delicious. And you can never go wrong with their chicken tikka masala. Seriously it's so good. The ambiance of this restaurant is so much fun. I love sitting in the booths facing the window and watching the people walk down Grand Ave. But it can get crowded on random nights for no real reason. Went to the India House in a nice St. Paul neighborhood on Friday night. The place was not too crowded but admittedly, it was 5pm as I had to get out of town. The space was big and warm. The best tables were the booths next to the windows where you can watch the people wander by. We ordered the vegetable samosas ($3), chicken tikka masala ($11) and chicken kashmiri ($11). One thing that struck me was the quality of chicken used in the dishes, it was all white meat and lots of it. No skimping here. I always order chicken tikka masala. It was flavorful without being too hot. It wasn't as creamy as I would have liked it. I want it more of a buttered chicken consistency .... maybe I should just order buttered chicken but I like the flavor of the masala better. We both took half of our dish home. Mine warmed up just as good as the first time. Was it the best Indian restaurant of my life? No. Would I go back. Yes. And I would want to eat-in as the service was excellent and the atmosphere was pleasant. read more

Tried this today for their lunch buffet, and we were not disappointed. My mother in law leaves to go home tomorrow, and she decided that she wanted to try this place before she left. We went to the lunch buffet as she has never tried Indian food and we decided that she would be better off trying a lot of things instead of ordering one thing. Everything on the buffet was fresh and hot. The flavored were on the spot, I wish there was more heat, but with it being a buffet I totally understand that they can't do that. The Chicken Tikka Masala was awesome, complimented the naan perfectly. The samosa were fresh and crisp, and the Indian fried cheese was great. My 9.5 month old absolutely loved everything he could get in his mouth. My 9 year old cut his first tooth to curry, and enjoyed this place. My husband and I will definitely try it during normal service hours and try some specific items. Always great to have a good Indian place to go to. I would recommend it from our experience. That being said, I wanted to first try my standard Chicken Tandoor before venturing into new territory. The entree was enough for three meals (and for $10, no less!). The Chicken Soup. Who would know? We were using a Groupon (again...I know. When I was pregnant I bought a bunch...and now we lug baby to all kinds of places right before our coupon expires!) Anyway, we needed to buy something for a couple more bucks-and the chicken soup was the winner. Amazing and spicy. Next time I'm sick, or just need some comfort food-this and Naan would fit the bill. Everything else was great-we shared the appetizer platter (wish we just ordered samosas) -the medium spicy Chicken Tikki Masala was pretty spicy (at least to me-I'm a wimp!) Wonderful service, beautiful digs (you can park across the street at Caribou if you can't find street parking) and my clothes didn't have that nasty "I ate Indian food" smell three hours later. By far the worst place I've had to eat indian food at on multiple occasions. Yes I've been here more then 5 times and every experience is horrible. My cousin loves this place because it's near his house, when I visit we "have to go here" well that all changed when I introduced him to what INDIAN FOOD should taste like by dragging him to: India Palace in Roseville, MN. It's a short 15 minutes away from here. This place serves bar-non the most bland, spice-less, least hottest and most defiantly cooked by White People Indian food ever. Their Naan is sh¡t, people Rave about how fresh it is... I make the yogurt bread myself at home (white guy) and I know why theirs is f*cked up, they kneed the dough way to much, Naan is supposed to be flat, light and Chewy not Dense and Requiring serious oral effort to rip a piece off. Tiki masala, This is a yogurt and spiced sauce/ marinade. It's not a bland paste smothered over your meat of choice after it's been cooked or boiled as it had next to no flavor without a sauce. Worst of all of this is my girlfriend likes this place (she can't handle TABASCO SAUCE) it's too spicy for her... Indian food while not noted as simply pepper spicy is supposed to invoke you into feeling something along the lines of indigestion problems later that day and a flushing of redness on the skin if it's made right. This places offers non of the benefits of real Indian food from Taste, textures, smells, coloration, nactin flush (blushing/ red skin), or any feelings of chugging copious amounts of milk to sooth that burning sensation on your tongue/ throat/ stomach. Bottom line is this place is to Indian food as Lee-Ann Chins is to Chinese food, dumbed down and Americanized. read more

Try the paneer pakora, the beef or Rogan josh, the chicken vindaloo, and the chicken mahkani. These are our favorites. I'll be short and sweet here. It's great to have a good indian restaurant on Grand Avenue! We had dinner here late this Sunday evening. Due to the hour, we were close to the only customers. The service very good. Our server was very nice, and later, during the meal when we wanted more rice, another server noticed us looking around and promptly attended to our table. Prices are mid-level. Appetizers were in the $4.00 neighborhood. Main courses were generally around $10-$12. Naan started at $1.99. We started our meal with Onion Pakora. Very tasty. Great balance in spices and not nearly as bready as some other indian restaurants. Our main courses were the Chicken Josh and Chicken Curry. We both ordered them "Medium" spicy. My friend thought the heat level was just fine, I thought medium was a little tame. As noted above, we had to ask for more rice when it was clear that the plentiful plate of rice wasn't going to be enough, however anotehr hefty portion was brought very quickly. On the subject of decor, in the short time that Grand Asia closed and India House opened, they painted, added carpet, and decorated the space very tastefully. I was stunned at the transformation and how just a few small touches really made the space warm and inviting. All in all we'll deifinately be returning to India House on Grand Avenue! read more

I went there for dinner. The service was friendly, and the food tasty. There were a good amount of people (I think that's a good sign for Indian food). I got the lamb madrasi, and didn't regret it (although the lamb korma, which my grandma got, was really good). Seems from past reviews that the buffet might not be as good, but our food experience was a very good and flavorful one. They serve beef here, which is rare for Indian food, so if you want a beef curry, this seems to be the place. Their mango lassi is good, too, but you can't really go wrong with those. Our Brits group of around 20 people had a very poor customer service experience a few weeks ago, and after contacting Singh the owner, we were invited to return for a "Do-over." Believe me, it was WELL worth the second chance. We were seen to by a very competent, friendly and accommodating young man who saw to our every need. The food was better than the last times I'd been, and Singh came to our table to introduce himself and apologise for the poor experience we'd had previously when he had been away in India. Pros for being the only Indian restaurant miles and miles away. My significant other and I came to India House after the rave reviews on Yelp. And I'm beginning to not trust some of these rave reviews, because maybe we have different standards. The buffet is comparably small compared to other joints in the city. It's true Midwest food is a Uber bland feast - but this really takes the cake, also giving the draft-iness of the restaurant, from the time you take to go get a plate, to your first bite, the food is pretty much cold. They do have unique entrees though, having yellow dal? That's kinda a big deal. Dessert isn't. I think this place might be better for dinner - as for ambiance, I think they do a great job, except they have beaded blinds covering junk (storage) area, which when compared to the dining room itself, makes it seem like an half-arsed attempt to keep the ambiance. Now, I enjoyed the beef curry (very tender meat!), the chicken kashmiri (all white meat!), and the... yellow stuff with the cauliflower and potatoes..., as well as the tandoori chicken (very moist!). But really, come on now. Midwesterners might like their food bland and boring, but this is the twin cities! The last bastion of civilization between Seattle and Chicago. People brag about how rad and progressive we are and about our foodie culture. You can't have it both ways, Minnesotans. We love Indian buffets. We love Indian food in general, but it is the intermixing of dishes that really make it for us. Since we were headed to St. Paul, we decided to try a different place that was on the way and headed to India House. The selection was good and the tandoori chicken was perfectly moist. Unfortunately that was all we enjoyed about the place. All the dishes were really salty and on top of that, were completely void of any spice. C'mon, we've had Indian food in the suburbs that was spicier than that! So in the end, there are so many places that are so much better that we are not likely to return. read more

Eh, buffet was okay. I have friends who RAVE about this place, so I had to try it. I really, really wanted to like it, but eh, I didn't. A friend and I went for lunch on a recent Thursday. We tried almost everything on the buffet, here are my observations - Fried tofu appetizer - cold and rubbery, but had a nice batter on it - had potential. Naan - good. No garlic naan, but this served the purpose. Egg basmati rice - no taste Basmati rice - fine Lentils - cold, no good. Cauliflower and carrots - had nice taste 'Curry Spinach' with homemade cheese - was good and hot, but curry flavor really was lacking. Chicken Kashmiri - nice taste, no kick. Beef Josh - tough and chewy, no flavor. I wanted to like it, I really did, but for the $18 paid for the 2 of us, I really couldn't. The water glasses are huge, could be smaller. I could have drowned. No need for much water since they really don't have much spice to their food. This is coming from someone who doesn't like a ton of heat, but I need some. I would go back to try one thing at dinner, but I would not go for lunch again. The food although plentiful, just isn't kept warm enough for the number of people who patronize the place. I got take-out from India House for the first time a few weeks ago. I love Indian food and eat it semi-often, and I was pleased with what I got. I did chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. The naan was nice and soft and not too buttery/greasy (which I like). The chicken tikka masala was flavorful, creamy, and just the right amount of spicyness (I got mild to medium). The staff person I interacted with was friendly and nice. My meal was $15, which I find to be a little too $$ for take out, but the food was good quality. The worst part of the restaurant is finding a place to park. We met some family for the buffet with about an hour left before they finished serving lunch for the day. The food was very good (despite being a little on the bland side) and there was a wide selection. On my first trip to the buffet, they were out of Tandoor Chicken and on my second trip, the Onion Bhajis was gone. It was a shame that they were out of Onion Bhajis, because the first batch was hot and very tasty (it was my favorite item that was served). Their samosas were a close second. I really enjoyed their Tandoor Chicken because it was very dry, some patrons may think that it was overcooked unfortunately. The naan was decent, it was a little cold when I tried it and they never refreshed that item while we were there. There other dishes were good and some of them had large chunks of paneer. The inside of the restaurant is very well decorated, clean, and well laid out. I was really impressed by the high ceilings, the lighting, and the wall hangings. The tables and chairs are comfortable. A great place for couples or for large groups. The employees were professional and friendly. The refilled water and checked on us often. Overall, India House is a good place to eat. It's really close to where our family lives, so we'll be back. We're giving it 3.5 stars and we'd be more than happy to give it 4 to 5 if they offer some dishes with more spice, make sure to keep the buffet stocked with all of their items, and serve a basket of fresh nann to each table (Something that majority of other Indian Restaurants provide). read more

+1 for being the only Indian joint on the block. That alone will keep us coming back. When my wife and I saw the sign go up a couple of months ago, a big FINALLY was sighed in unison. The food isn't earth-shattering or anything, but it's good enough to satisfy a craving for Indian. We tried our go-to dish, matar paneer - not so great. The paneer was quite rubbery and didn't have a lot going for it. Other vegetarian staples were tasty and well seasoned though - Chana, Tofu Palak, Dal Makhani. We got take-out once, which was painless. We ate in the restaurant on our second trip, and the service was great. Our waiter was friendly and patient, and got along well with our 1-year old boy.
