What a gem! We love this place and the delightful servers. When we come with our 2 1/2 year-old daughter, the staff are always very sweet with her and bring her a tiny mango lassi or a little veggie plate with our salads. They always surprise us with their kindness. And in addition to warm and wonderful service, the food is great! They offer a nice variety of naan breads and appetizers. My wife always gets the butter chicken. I ordered the lamb shahi korma which was tasty, savory, and a little sweet. I also find the lamb rogan josh to be consistently good. Also golub jomuns. If you don't know what that is then just stop reading this and go get some. Sweet wonders! So India House scores on consistently yummy food, but even more so everyone there makes us feel a bit like royalty. We leave with contented palates and warm hearts. read more

I love India House. My son and I have been coming here for 10 years. We always get the same thing, maybe because we are boring or can't understand what the menu says, but every time: Chicken Tandoor and Palak Paneer are a big winner! I want India Place to survive, I really do. I eat there on a regular basis and live just a 10-minute walk away. Unfortunately, I am nearing the end with them. The last two times eating there have been terribly inconsistent in both service and food quality. I'll start with SERVICE: on our last visit, the gentleman filling waters came over and was pleasant enough, he filled our waters with a smile and greeted me "Hello sir how are you". Note I was there with my girlfriend and thought it was odd that he only greeted me. More on that later. He then asked if we wanted anything other than water. He spoke very little English but I ordered a glass of house Merlot. He was very confused and stared at the menu for 20 seconds and then walked away. 5 minutes later he brought out a white wine. I asked for the Merlot and let him know that was the red white (they have 3 options for house wine, only one is red). He was extremely confused and made it seem like what I was asking for was incorrect. The last 3 times I have dined there I have ordered the house wine and have been told they do not have it, yet it still exists on the menu. Eventually, I asked him to take the wine and send our server over in hopes that he might have a better knowledge of the menu. Sure enough, our server came over and greeted ME "Hello Sir, how are you this evening?" Now my girlfriend and I both made eye contact. It happened again, they refused to acknowledge that she even existed. She was offended but we moved on. I let the server know that I ordered the house merlot but once again was told that they did not have it but had another merlot ($2.5 more per glass). I honestly just wanted a glass of wine so I agreed. My GF ordered a Reisling and they brought it out promptly. I was told their bottle opener was broken and they need a manager to come bring a new one. Apparently, they have one bottle opener and it was broken. It took over 15 minutes to get a glass of wine. The manager had to walk to Walgreens to get another wine opener. Things seemed to go south from here. The FOOD: My GF and I get the same thing every time we eat Indian, I get the Chicken Tikka Masala and she gets the Palaak Paneer. And we share a Naan of some sort. This time was different. The Rice came out and was not Basmati rice. It was flat on the ends and mushy. I've made minute rice with a better texture than this before. It was not the rice I have become accustomed to. My Tikka Masala sauce seemed as though it came from a premade can. I frequently make it at home using the cheap simmer sauces from the grocery store and this did not hold up to that. Unfortunately, as much as I want to like this place due to its convenience I am not sure I can any longer recommend them to fellow Indian food lovers as the last couple experiences have been mediocre at best. Couple that with a server that cannot acknowledge there are two people at the table and I'm saddened to have to move along to one of the many other Indian restaurants in town. I'll give them some time and hopefully this review brings an audit of their service and food quality and consistency. read more

I do love Indian food dearly, so was excited that this place opened up on Grand. And I'm happy it's there after trying it. The food is pretty good. It's not good enough to rave about, but it's above-average standard Indian fare. Lots of variety on the menu, that's for sure. The naan is just the right texture, and the meat-to-vegetable-to-sauce ratios seem to be spot-on. If you like spicy food, though, a warning: "spicy" here is not spicy. I expect "spicy" Indian food to be an 8 or 9 on a 1-10 scale, and this barely registered a 4. Not that I'm holding that against them, though -- I'm sure they're overcompensating for wimpy Minnesota palates (sorry if I offend! But it's true.). If you want it done the real way, though, make sure to tell them you're not afraid of the heat. The atmosphere, decor, and service all seem to be above-average, too. India House looks like a good addition to the previous Grand Ave standbys... hope it sticks around! read more

Came here for lunch today with a large group of people and it seemed to go over well but most of them had little experience with indian food. I think this was a good starter indian place for newbies :) What was good: Food: Only had buffet, food was okay but bland for my taste but perfect for many of the people we brought who had never had indian before. Onion bajis were good and the yellow dahl was a nice touch. Buffet made it easy to get in and get out. What was not so good: No parking lot that I could find. Buffet food was bland, while it tasted okay it's not the kind of indian I crave but good for people who want flavor without spice. Reviews were mixed and it is close to home so I headed down the street to see for myself. I really like the decor and the staff was friendly. I wish I knew the waiter's name because he was so polite! I ordered the spiciest I could and it was great. It was that kind of spice that builds as you eat until all of a sudden you can't talk and you need rice...STAT. The food was good, I ordered the typical vegetable curry and naan. We split mango pudding and rice pudding- both were delicious. This will not be the greatest Indian food you'll ever have but India House is a good dependable neighborhood place...and I'd say it's slightly above average. As other reviewers have noted and as I've come to discover myself, spicy food ain't so spicy in the Upper Midwest. But the fare here is solid (the naan is particularly good), the service fast and attentive and the atmosphere is far more pleasant than your typical local Indian place. We were in the mood for Indian tonight, but didn't have either the time nor the inclination to actually make something, but, oh, look at that, an Indian place right nearby. I spent 3 months in India last fall and during that time became a huge fan of palak paneer. I've tried a couple times but haven't been able to replicate the stuff I had over there, but the palak paneer from India House was pretty close. I got it "hot", and while it wasn't exceptionally hot, it did have a little bit of a zip to it. Wife had malai kofta, and said it was very good. We got an order of onion pakora, too, which was great with the mint chutney that came with it. I can't comment on the service, since we just got takeout, but they do have a bowl on the check out counter full of the stuff that my Indian co-workers always said was "good for digestion, eat." Definitely a place I'll go back to, at least when I'm too lazy to do the cooking myself. read more

Delicious, Authentic, Elegant, and Affordable! (Also, Awesome Lentil soup!!) I have been to India House countless times since moving to St. Paul in the last two years and I have yet to exhaust the extensive menu. Each time here, I am greeted with warm smiles, seated in a comfy yet elegant booth next to a window, and given amazing service. My boyfriend and I both LOVE this restaurant. From the perfectly prepared naan to the awesomely fluffy rice, to the unique and flavorful Indian dishes, India House could not be better. They value their guests here, which is clear, because as regulars of India House, we have been offered complimentary dessert, complimentary beverages, and when we brought my mom in for the first time, she received a glass of wine on the house! But what the hell I love Indian food so much I will go just about anywhere that serves Indian food. Just got back from a lunch visit to India House with a few co-workers. I actually have only had Indian food one or two times before, so I am by no means an expert. Since I had no idea what to order, I thought it would be safest to stick with the buffet and sample a lot of different items. THe naan was fabulous. Since the buffet was almost out the waiter brought a hot, steaming basket to our table. The bread was warm and chewy and perfect for dipping in extra sauce. My favorite dish was definitely the chicken tikka masala. I really liked the creamy tomato sauce and the chicken was not too dry. The yellow lentils were the spiciest thing I tried. Everything was hot and seemed fairly fresh. And the had a really nice selection if you are inexperienced with Indian food (like I am). Based on previous reviews, I thought the buffet was $8.99, but it is actually $10.75. read more

I go here regularly and have yet to be disappointed. Parking can sometimes be a hassle, but if you are worried you can always order from Bitesquad delivery service. I love their beef samosas for an app, the chicken shahi korma (with their homemade cheese, nuts, and plump white raisins- so good!), and onion culcha for my main. I have also had their garlic and their cheese naan, both of which were the right combination of flaky exterior and stretchy interior. If you like things spicy, they actually have 2 scales so you might want to specify if you want midwest spicy or actual Indian spicy- these are very different levels! My favorite Indian food restaurant in the Cities! The food is fresh, perfectly prepared with the right amount of heat (I like a lot), and the service pre-COVID was great. Last week we ordered take-out, but I made the mistake of ordering through GrubHub. They messed up my order. I went to the restaurant the next day and got exactly what I needed from the owner, plus an education in how the delivery companies affect the restaurant. They charge the restaurant, charge the customer extra, and keep the tip. The restaurant gets a bad deal and I got bad customer service. As an Indian, I thought I knew about all the Indian restaurants in the greater Twin Cities area. To my surprise, I had not heard of India House before. I came here with a group of 7 people total and we ordered 6 dishes and 6 pieces of naan (garlic and regular). We got the chicken makhani, chicken kashmiri, chicken shahi korma, and chicken biryani. All of them were delicious. The waiters were also very friendly and gave us a dessert for free because it was someone's birthday (kheer + gulab jamun). Being regular patrons of India Palace in Woodbury and Taste of India in Maplewood, it is good to see that there is yet another Indian restaurant option even closer to where I live. Compared to the other aforementioned restaurants, I'd say this place is the best, especially since I believe that India Palace in Woodbury has undergone a change in management which has affected their food quality. I have only been to India House twice, and have gotten the chicken kashmiri and the chicken shahi korma and I think that the food quality is the best at India House. Flavor wise, India Palace and India House taste pretty similar, but the chicken is more tender and not so dry at India House (how India Palace used to be. Yes, can't you tell I am bitter about that?) I have yet to dine-in at this place, but as long as service is decent, this will be the go-to place for Indian for me just because of the location. *EDIT 08/12/2009* Dined in there tonight. Food was pretty good. Had the Chicken Kashmiri (as usual). There were quite a few peas and they tasted a little overcooked a bit. Usually not a problem, except there were so many peas it was quite noticeable. First time this has happened though. The garlic naan was also different than other places. This place seems to mince the garlic and put it on top of the naan. The garlic gets cooked too well so it loses a lot of its taste (most of the garlic pieces were burnt). Most other places seem to slice the garlic and put it inside the naan, which is the way I prefer it. So I'll probably be sticking to the regular naan from now on. Just a matter of personal preference I guess. This is still my preferred Indian Restaurant in the TC. read more

India House is our typical go-to for Indian food in St. Paul. The reasons we like it? It's super convenient, pretty good, and reasonably priced for Indian food with a number of meal options under $10. I will continue to come here for these reasons. Now, I don't claim that this is the best Indian restaurant in the twin cities. The quality of ingredients is okay but not outstanding. This isn't where you come for a fancy date but it is a place you can go with friends or the grandparents if you're looking for something outside of the Midwestern norm. I went for the lunch buffet. The lack of flavor was astonishing. I had a bit of everything on the buffet, and I was disappointed in how bland everything was. I expected a much stronger flavor profiles. Where's the spice? And not just hot spice, but flavorful spice. . . there just wasn't much there. Apparently they forgot to put hot sauce on the buffet; I saw a sign for it, but there was nothing there. I kind of felt sorry for them. The dining room was nearly empty at lunch time and the waiters didn't seem happy. I used to drive 70 miles to eat at a great Indian restaurant TN. I can walk to this one, so I'll probably try it again with an item off the menu, but it won't be anytime soon. read more

This restaurant had a promotion to increase customer base. This is a great idea, but they clearly were not prepared. We waited two hours for delivery (despite being told 1 hour by door dash) and even had a driver quit while waiting. The hosts were incredibly rude when we called and hung up on us several times. Doordash driver was exceptional and gave me updates via text message before they gave up on the order. We were starving and the food was still just mediocre (Chicken Tikka Masala and Alu Gobi). I love Indian food and in my humble opinion this is the best Indian restaurant in Minnesota! The best dish I have found here, and the one I order the most, is the paneer pakora, which is a spicy tart yogurt curry and is my favorite food ever! But their sauces are also the best of any place I've been and you can get unlimited little dishes of them if you order vegetable samosas or go for the buffet. I also enjoy their palak paneer. I don't eat meat, so that limits my options, but many friends enjoy their meat dishes as well. Their menu is huge and I've never ordered a bad thing off it!
