first time trying the restaurant, food and service was excellent definitely coming back

Ok, before I get started, a disclaimer: If you're looking for authentic Indian food, this is not the place to go. You should instead check out Rasoi or Taste of India. However, this restaurant has ALWAYS been on point with everything they've done. 1. The environment is gorgeous. Tons of outdoor seating for summer nights, beautiful twinkle lights, twisty lights, Bollywood Films - their decorations truly go the full nine yards (That's an expression, right?) 2. The food - Out of this world! a. I love the vegetable samosas - definitely one of the best items. It's very creamy on the inside and the sweet/tangy sauce for dipping is a very good paring. b. Honey and ginger naan bread - comes with two types of dipping sauces (one spicy, one not) - very well cooked 3. Kale salad - light, fresh, well-chopped, lightly dressed (I added some of the dipping sauces for more flavor) - definitely worth subbing in the rice for the salad. 4. Chicken masala - has to be their signature dish. Very smokey flavor with a creamy texture. 5. Mango Curry - Yes Yes Yes! Sweet, tangy, tons of meat. Very well portioned! 3. Jumbo Margaritas for only $10 - Go on Tuesdays for a free app with a margarita. Huge rim for lots of salt/sugar. I took my family here for my graduation dinner and it served nicely. Located right next to Three Sisters, which makes for an easy ice cream trip post-dinner. Great for a romantic date night as well. read more

Not only did this place have great food and drinks, but it was also well decorated and had a lovely ambience! Very cute ceiling lights inside, and nice outdoor seating with a lot of plants. There was even a lady inside offering free henna tattoos which was cool. The coffee martini was my favorite drink, and the samosas and chaat were delicious. We were passing through Providence and decided we needed some Indian food. With over 3000 reviews, India Restaurant was our obvious choice and they did not disappoint! The food is amazing, perfectly spiced and we were seated right next to the fireplace!! Yess!!! They are the only restaurant on Hope st. with a fireplace! We ordered the chicken biryani and chicken korma. Both of which were just the best!! Especially the chicken biryani! They have taken good care to seat people separately. The booths are separated with transparent screen to completely isolate as per state mandate! If you ever think of the Indian restaurant in Rhode Island this is the first thing that should come to your mind. From the most basic mango lassi to the Indian delicacies everything is fantastic. Went here for the mere fact of its reviews. Everything was great up until we had a roach at our table which I've posted a picture of it publicly. Manager of course comes over and nicely makes excuses for the happening. Long story short we still had to pay our $70 bill and to add insult to injury, offers me a $25 gift card to comeback?! Are you kidding? Didn't want to make a scene as my GF and myself were nothing but cordial and understanding of what had transpired. Disgusting but more so completely disappointed that ANYONE there would try and justify as to why it happened. Totally disgusted. UPDATE.... When my GF and I got home last night, I had to call the restaurant back and discuss it with the proper person in charge. AJ seemed to be that person. We had a good conversation considering what transpired. Being angry, yelling, cursing or being irrational, is NOT the right way to handle things. Which neither of us were doing at all. I told him that I wasn't sure if I was more disappointed with the cockroach or the fact that we were presented with a bill to pay. I graciously paid cash(I didn't want a refund-hence the cash)and although he offered many times to send me the full amount back, I refused. No need for that. Came here for my first time today, won't be my last. Food was delicious and good portions. I got the Shrimp mango curry, my girlfriend got shrimp kabob dinner plate, and we shared the india nachos for an appetizer And the chocolate cake dessert. The decor and atmosphere on the interior is very inviting. The server Rochelle was very attentive to my party of 6 when I wanted to move my table from inside to outside. My friends and I enjoyed our entrees as well, although the food took quite long to get to the table. I've always enjoyed their lamb saag since I was in high school and have had good experiences with the food they serve at the farmers market on Saturday. One thing we did not appreciate was seeing rats 2-4 feet away from us in the outdoor dining area as we ate. After dinner, we requested to speak to the manager about it who initially acted very surprised but then proceeded to tell us that they were "mice" and that they are having someone come weekly to deal with the rodent problem. We proceeded to gaslight us saying that we decided to eat outside and compared us to diners who complain about flies in their soup as if seeing rats would be expected in an outdoor seating area. The manager refunded us the cheapest entree on our bill but was very unapologetic. I would recommend going to Rasoi, Kabob and Curry, or Not Just Snacks over this place! read more

i walked in and didn't notice my friends sitting by the door because i couldn't stop looking at the beautiful decor! Can I just move here? I've visited twice and both visits have been perfection, I cant wait to visit the back patio! I get the chicken tikki masala because its my favorite dish ever. the spicy naan bread - YUM. My 1st visit i did the larger plate for additional $4.95 and loved the presentation and every single thing that came with the dish. I had left overs which I ate the next day and made my boyfriend jealous. the 30% off on Tuesday is amazing. I also visited on a Saturday and my boyfriend had the lamb appetizer because "he wasnt that hungry." they were so good that he also ordered the lamb entree totaling 7 lamb chops haha. I was so happy that he loved the restaurant as much as I did because like I said, I just want to live there. I have not yet gone to try the margaritas but ive been told they are very good. No worries here- because I will be back. The half order of naan appetizer is huge for 3 people FYI, and I loved every taste but spicy was for sure my favorite. We ordered some appetizers for the table, one being the assorted naan basket. They did a great job at separating out a specific kind so it didn't touch the others. My favorite one was the honey and ginger naan. Second best was the one with garlic. We really wanted the eggplant that they always have at the farmers market on Saturdays but i guess they dont have that dish in the actual restaurant. A bit odd and misleading if you ask me. I had gotten the grilled broccoli and there was no description in the menu of it but when i got it there was a sauce all over that had quite the spicy kick to it which was really disappointing, they do have a note in the menu that if you don't like something that you can pick a different item, but i just wish the original item had a description to begin with so i wouldn't need to pick another item and waste food. Our party enjoyed all of the food but the service was on the slower side, we had ordered 2 items to go for someone who couldn't stay, and he did not get his food until we were almost done eating ours, and we ordered it before we even ordered the food that was not to go. read more

My second time ever trying Indian food. In the summer they had a $5 jumbo margarita special. The drinks were awesome and so was the food. If you like spices I'd recommend ordering the shrimp appetizer. After lunch we walked to the park across the street. Beautiful location, beautiful venu. After all these years living in the city I finally made it here. It would have been 5 stars if not for the wait which was a hit disorganized but understandable as they put a small sign out front to please be mindful and patient as they are short staff. The menu selection is pretty big for both the meat eaters and vegetarians. I was pleasantly surprised I enjoyed everything we ordered. No complaint whatsoever on food and drinks. From the drink menu I ordered a red sangria and the glass it was served in was big than what I am usually accustomed to. The rest of the table ordered this daiquiri type drink that came in a carafe which I thought was pretty cool. Kind of like a small picture, and was enough for 4 people. The sizes of the entree dishes were decent size and enough for you to bring a box home too. Joined two friends for lunch. We each had the lunch buffet, which was reasonably priced at 10.95. Started with the spinach lentil soup and kale salad. Went back to try other dishes, but a couple were empty and had to return again to try those items after they were refilled. I had the mango margarita, which I really enjoyed. Service was good. I would like to return to try some other dishes that were not included with the buffet. read more

If you have not eaten at India in a while it is time to pay them another visit. In 2016 they expanded their kitchen and then started working on the dining area. Little by little they worked through the night to tile the floor, reupholster booths, add windows and hang new lights - lights that are wildly popular. But you don't go to a restaurant for ambiance alone. It's about the food and India has really stepped up their game. A couple years back I stated they were "the safe bet" nothing to knock your socks off but you would never be disappointed. Great! Grabbed the $12 lunch box special and was pleased. For the price, not bad. Portions were just right for lunch without having an odd amount of leftovers. Naan was quite good, salad fresh and tasty, and the chicken tikka masala a classic. On top of that, service was quick, staff friendly and curbside pickup was smooth and easy to navigate. After my last visit the owner reached out and provided me with another opportunity to try some of the dishes. This time I ordered the lamp chops, vegetable samosas, spicy fried eggplant, vindaloo naan, mint and cucumber raita and goat curry. The food was absolutely delicious. Let me start off with the lamb chops, they are my favorite. The naan could of been spicier but was good esp with the raita which was a bit thicker than I expected. Next time I know to ask for garlic on it. The samosas were okay, I wish they were crisper but the flavor was good. The eggplant came as a pita sandwich it seemed which was something I was not expecting. I haven't tried it yet because I got it to bring for lunch lol. Finally the goat curry; I've had better but thislo was definitely delicious. The curry was the perfect blend of kick and subtle, the goatvwas tender and best of all the dish wasn't riddled with a ton of bones. You would never know there was a slowdown in business from what I witnessed on February 13th. This place was doing a brisk business with pick up orders crowding the bar area and seating looked full. We had a six pm reservation via Open Table and we were accommodated with seating right on time. Our server was a delightful personality and very sweet. She took our drink order and disappeared. A good 20 minutes later she appeared to let us know that they were out of Taj Mahal beer. So, The a kingfisher it is! At around 6:35 we got our first drinks for our celebration of our first date eight years ago. The really long wait for our first drink was the only problem here. The rest was great. Very authentic recipes combined with some very well executed twists. The special was a blue crab curry that could have been overpowered with coconut but the crab flavors were forward and delicious. The lamb vindaloo was perfect. Nice portions of well trimmed, savory lamb that was tender and well seasoned. The heat was perfect and not out of balance with the rest of the sauce. Presentations were careful but not fussy and I was glad to see that the frenetic pace of the restaurant had not impacted the presentation from the kitchen. Well done! We can't wait for Covid to pass so we can return for outdoor dining. We will be back for a five out of five next time! read more

Everything about this place is perfect...the food is complex and fantastic (and I think I've tried everything on the menu over the years)! They also have the best and most beautifully presented Thali in Rhode Island. I'm attaching a photo here. Wait staff is also friendly and attentive. The ambience has always been great, but they did some redesigning and now it's even more amazing. There is only one thing keeping me from giving a full five stars -the music. They always play this very fast Indian dance music and it completely ruins the ambience. It's such a beautiful place with wonderful lighting yet for some reason they always play this very fast-paced music that's so out of place and jarring that it doesn't make you want to stay. Whenever I've found myself hurrying through a meal here or skipping dessert, it's because the music was driving me nuts. With all of the beautiful Indian music they couldn't pick, I don't understand why they would pick such loud, fast-paced music. Customers want to enjoy their meal and beautiful surroundings without frantic music blaring. Quieter music to match the wonderful menu and beautiful restaurant would make India beyond perfect. read more

My first ever experience with Indian food was here a while back, since then I've gotten takeout here many times and it never disappoints me! My family's go-to order here is the 11 dollar grab-and-go lunch special. We order the Chicken Tikka Masala, it's got the perfect amount of spice, and comes with great sides. The rice is basic rice but super good, and the side salad is DELICIOUS! The staff is super friendly, nice, and attentive. The meals are always fresh and delicious. The atmosphere inside and outside is beautiful and very clean. COVID precautions are in place and enforced. A good Indian boofay Since I have never been to India and since I am not of Indian background, I have absolutely no idea what "authentic" Indian food is. Then again I don't really know what authentic Chinese, Polish, Japanese or even what "authentic" American food is suppose to taste like. So many regions and so many people all seem to have their own ideas of what food is suppose be. Perhaps nothing in life is as subjective and capricious as tastes in food. I do love Indian food and have eaten a lot of it in various restaurants in different states around the country. I'm not sure if any of it was "authentic" but I do know when I like the food, and I definitely enjoy the food at India restaurant. The decor is pretty glitzy which is all right but nothing that really appeals. Some cool pictures on the wall and really comfy booths and even some tables outside, but I go to restaurants for the food not the ambiance. Some of the best food I ever had was served on a wooden crate in a dingy room. Doesn't really matter. I love boofays, especially Indian boofays, and the one offered here is pretty good. Lots of different selections with some excellent nan that was light and crispy. Not greasy and thick like the kind you find in some other places. Everything looked and smelled great and I don't believe I had anything at the boofay that I didn't enjoy. For some reason Rhode Island doesn't have many Indian restaurants and I don't believe there are any in the entire state outside of Providence. That's curious because both Ma and Ct have zillions of them, some of the extremely good and maybe even "authentic". Sure India isn't the best Indian restaurant I've been too but I do like it and will continue to go there, especially to gorge on the cool boofay. Besides, unless I go out of state there just isn't much to choose from. Perhaps I will actually find out what "authentic" Indian food is but until then India Restaurant will do the job of curing my Indian food carvings just fine. read more

I've been here 6-8 times over the past couple of years. They have upscaled the interior - for example, they have gotten rid of the loud Bollywood movies being played, which is good. The food continues to be was mostly good but can be mixed. For example, tonight the Khiceri was super dried out and had clearly been reheated. I ate only a couple of bites and left the rest. I told my waitress who said ok but did not offer to any replacement. To add insult to injury, they upcharge you for this!! Definitely NOT worth it. What is also annoying is that they apply an automatic 20% gratuity regardless of party size and without your permission. This is buried in the bill and still they have the gall to suggest additional tips beginning at 18%. I will not be going back anytime soon. read more

The korma chicken and rice had chunks of sweet coconut in it. It was disgusting. The tandoori chicken was not tender. They claim the slow cook it but the other Rasoi cooks tandoor chicken better. This place has decent, but not great Indian food, a good selection of flavored naans, and impressive Indian-inspired cocktails (my favorite is the mango pina colada, yum!) I would suggest it if you're in RI and want to try some Indian in a very classy setting. It's more upscale than some other Indian restaurants I've tried. I think the food at Kabob and Curry is significantly better, but this place is a bit fancier. The food, however, doesn't match the decor. For GOOD, I'm sorry, GREAT Indian food, head to Kabob and Curry instead. It's blows this place out of the water. read more

I considered myself a novice when it comes to Indian food, and until now I had never had bad or mediocre Indian food. Yes, I said UNTIL NOW. The good: The space is beautiful, and I love the "booths" that are separated by drapes. Gorgeous! Service was excellent all around. The bad: The food was disappointing. I wouldn't even come back for the $1 bar menu. If you order a drink $5 and up, you can order an appetizer for $1 for each drink (a few $$ more for fancier things). But almost all of the beers are under $5, and the cocktails are all sugary colored gimmicky drinks. Certainly not somewhere you go when you want a cocktail. I had a flatbread pizza that was naan topped with pesto, mushroom & mozzarella. There was nothing particularly Indian about it other than the naan base, which really just made it taste like soggy pizza. Instead of the standard samosa, theirs are wrapped in a flour tortilla wrap and baked, which I thought was strange. The lentil soup was a huge bowl but it was flavorless. I also had a vegetable biryani was very good and spicy. I noticed was that there weren't many Indian people there. Compare that to Rasoi, or the place on Wickenden where I always see a lot of Indian customers. While I don't believe in declaring things "authentic", I wish they would be a little more up front about their fusion style. Fusion can be aces, but in this case it's average. I came here because I had a gift certificate. With all of the Indian places to go to, I see no need to come back even though I still have another gift certificate remaining. read more

The restaurant's Half Off Tuesdays is no longer. They stopped that promotion on Sept 8th, 2015 and replaced it with 1/3 off entrees. The food and the service is very good, but I was disappointed with their decision. Many many restaurants offer 50% off Tuesdays or BOGO free on Tuesdays, so I believe many people will go for those deals instead of getting just 1/3 off. Too bad. read more

This afternoon I had a great time. Beautiful ambience. Very clean. Our meals were well prepared. I've eaten many Indian restaurants all over the country. And their top notch. The naan was great. We had a chicken and my guest had a shrimp dish. They offer some nice red wines by the glass. Reasonably price. Will be returning soon. Next time I'll be bringing more friends. They also offer a buffet. Which looked very tasty. Wait staff was very sweet & the manager stopped by to make sure everything was to our liking. The restrooms were very clean and well stocked.
