India House is a wonderful place the hubby & I found by searching "nearby" on Yelp. :-) I lived in California, where Indian food is good and abundant. Now, I'm in Holland, where there is not one single Indian restaurant... Guess I just happened to be in the right place at the right time tonight! I agree with a previous reviewer about the samosas--truly the best EVER. It would be a complete shame & a wasted trip if you don't get those! We also had the (obligatory) chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, mutter paneer & garlic naan. It was all delicious, fresh & authentic tasting!! :-) Incredible after a long Indian food drought! As for the spiciness...we told Tony to make it the way he thinks it should be served. It all came out spicy enough for great flavor, but not over-the-top spicy so you couldn't enjoy it. In other words, just right. So, trust Tony & enjoy! We'll be returning. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu, especially the gulab jamun...too full this time! read more

Two times I've visited this place with the intention of getting the lunch buffet, neither time did I get the opportunity to do so. The first time I went, I was told the buffet equipment wasn't working, but I could still order from the menu. So I did. The butter chicken was decent, but the naan was completely forgettable. All in all, I ended getting much less food for much more money. Recently, I thought I'd give them another shot. I showed up at 11:50am on a weekday (posted hours say they open at 11:30am for lunch buffet) and the place was closed. No sign. No sorry. Just locked with the lights off. I also noticed this time around that the buffet is $10.99, which is relatively steep. I'm sure my review would be different if I ever actually received their service as advertised, but ultimately there are much more consistent, professional, and affordable options for Indian in GR. read more

I went for the sake of the lunch buffet, as I was craving Tikka Masala. I got there shortly after 11 AM, and was the only person there, though later, folks started to trickle in. The Lunch Buffet was closed, unfortunately, so next time I may call ahead, as it seems to be something of a regular occurance coming from other reviews. "Tony" was extremely attentive and friendly; it was a little offputting to shy ole me, but that isn't a negative. I ordered the Tikka Masala, and the portions were generous, and the spices (at medium) were just enough to give it an edge. It really was delicious, and the Naan that came was really good. Keen to try more of the menu next time! Loved the grocery portion, and I was suckered into purchasing a movie and some tea. All in all, will definitely be going there again and bringing friends. And when I make my own Masalas and Curry dishes, I know where to go for supplies! (and all other sorts of wonderful trinkets and odds and ends). Update: Got to the lunch buffet! Everything is made from scratch. Family run restaurant, kindest people you will ever meet. I'm from California, and I've had a lot of different foods all over, but India Town is probably the best Indian food I've ever had. They work hard and take pride in their cooking and you can definitely tell. Highly recommended. read more

I was just passing through on my way from Holland, MI to Mt Pleasant MI. I decided to goto this restaurant on my way. I thought they had a buffet, and would make for a quick lunch option. I was aghast to find that they did not have buffet on the weekend. I took a chance and ordered 2 simple dishes - Dal tadka, chapati roti, and Saag paneer. There was only one lady managing the store and cooking, and she turned out the dishes in 20 minutes. They were AWESOME! and authentic tasting. Best (and most authentic) Indian food in Grand Rapids. The lunch buffet is fantastic and has a plethora of different dishes including my favorite, saag, which you won't normally find at other lunch buffets. The dinner menu is also not outlandishly priced like many other restaurants. As if that isn't enough, the owners are very friendly and welcoming. My only complaint is that it's located way over yonder down division street. I guess thats okay though because otherwise I'd be eating saag on a daily basis. read more

Amazing and authentic. One of my tests of Indian food is Tandoori chicken. It was truly amazing. After that, i went on a Tandoori chicken binge. I travel for work and all I ate was Indian for the next few weeks in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. His chicken was perfection - perfectly spiced and marinated, perfectly cooked. Naan was great too - nice, large, freshly cooked. I've been there a few times and everything is always freshly prepared and to the same high standards as my first visit. I always get it to take to my hotel, so no comments on service dining in. read more

Atmosphere: Really felt like I was in India. No music playing or anything. There is a small convenient store adjacent to the restaurant. Felt like I took a time machine back to the 1980s. Interior Decor: Bland and minimalistic. Grimy. Can use a thorough cleaning. Service: Can't comment because I got my food for take out, but when I was there, the gentleman that was working made a costumer get up and walk over to the cash register to pick up the plastic bags for his to go box. Excellent food! I ordered the Saag Paneer and couldn't stop thinking about going back after that. The next week I had to come back for some Korma and Eggplant Bharta. Both were also fabulous. The owners are wonderful hosts who made me feel like home immediately. All the best Indian restaurants I've been in have been simple and inviting, where the food and company is key. This place, I've been coming here off and on for years, the food has always been great, but the atmosphere has always been horrible. Though, I was pleasantly surprised when we returned this week to find the place had been updated. It now feels much brighter and clean inside. The food is always amazing, the owner "Tony" is always there and extremely friendly, maybe too much so, but that's just the way he is. Love love this place. I pick up take out on my way home from the airport and it is sometimes the best part of my trip. They wrap things so well you don't have to worry about leakage in your car. Best Indian place I've been to in GR. Garlic naan was loaded with garlic.

This place has lots of potential but the owners don't seem to realize it or care. Its convenient for lunch-hour crowds on a weekday. My observation is that the lunch buffet is expensive for the very limited dishes offered and for the location. I have suggested to them to adjust their price to the neighborhood and the location but I don't think that has happened. Oh well...... read more

I am a regular customer here at India Town and for good reason! I have never once been disappointed with any dish. In fact, I have been consistently impressed and satisfied. It's nearly impossible to narrow down a specific recommendation but if I were to be asked, I would suggest the Chicken Tikka Masala. Tony's (the owner's) most prized dish and for obvious reason. Of the handful of Indian cuisines in the area, India Town is the one which resonates most and I will continue to be a regular costumer. read more

I just moved to GR so I can not speak about other places in the area. Compared to what I'm used to in the Detroit/Ann Arbor areas it was acceptable. Not the best I've had, but not the worst. As expected the Butter Chicken was good. I went in at about 1245 and was the only person in the restaurant. There were about 8 dishes to choose from. I'd say 2 were bland, the other 6 were good to great. I would eat here again, but is it my go to Indian restaurant? Only time will tell. read more

By far the best chicken byriani ever! We even know how to make it authentic ourselves and this topped it! The flavors were so on point the heat level was exactly what we ordered and the chicken was perfectly cooked. I could eat this everyday. Hands down will eat their food again. I am not an expert in Indian cuisine, but I have visited India Town a few times with a group of friends and always had a good experience India Town is smallish restaurant and store on Division. There is a parking lot in the back, but don't blink or you'll miss the alleyway entrance! I believe it is family owned and run, as you'll find that the greeter, waiter, and chef all appear to be the same person. However, I've never seen the place so busy that it suffers terribly from this issue. Food always tasted fresh, had good spice, and were fairly large portions. The naan and samosas were very good and I think I need to go back to get some more Rogan josh. Some possible downsides? Well, don't expect your food at lightning speed (maybe call for pickup instead?) And the owner, while very friendly and helpful, might spook some people as being overly attentive if they wish for privacy. Neither of these issues were so critical for me. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Excellent Chicken Korma & Lamb Tikka Masala, very very good samosa's and excellent, very garlic-y naan. We even sampled their Mango drink and the galub jamun for dessert which was sweet & yummy. You're allowed your own alcoholic beverages, so we brought our own in a small cooler. We drove 30 miles to get there and we'll do it again, India Town was delicious! read more
