Came here on a Saturday night a few weeks ago with a friend because we were craving Indian food Our order: we got the butter chicken, chicken tiki masala, regular naan, garlic naan, and an order of rice. The order of rice was enough to split between 2 people. The entrees are about $16 each, and the naan is less than $5 per order. I think each naan order was like 3 pcs each? Pros: - REALLY delicious food! both the butter chicken and tiki masala have the same sauce but different types of chicken. both are very yummy. The rice is great, and the naan is great as well - 1 order of rice is DEFINITELY enough to split between 2 people - Pretty decent service, they checked in on us pretty often - Not crowded even on a Saturday night, I would say there were only about 4 parties in the restaurant. Cons: - I would say it's a little more on the expensive side (you do get a lot of food, but I kind of wish the rice was included in the price of the entree). - Might look like you have to pay for parking in the lot right outside, but it seems like if you come after 6pm for dinner it should definitely be free (didn't look super clear to us, if someone is super familiar with this parking lot pls lmk lol) Overall, I feel like it's pretty hard to find a good Indian restaurant in the East Bay, so we definitely will be back! read more

Don't let the simple, generic sounding name put you off from checking out this spot. For a Downtown San Leandro experience, Indian Grill delivered some good vegan Indian dishes for the soul. A group of us came here on a weeknight and it was practically empty: perfect for us. Their menu offers a vast number of dishes with many marked vegan for your convenience. Although it was hard to read at times which dishes were actually vegan, but you'll be able to figure it out. Be careful that the only vegan chutney available is their tamarind option. We ordered mostly vegan friendly dishes with one standard chicken tikka masala for the meat eaters. The Aloo Gobhi was a good mix of cauliflower and potatoes with tomato and spices, and their Dal Tadkha was one of the best yellow lentil dishes I've had! Definitely order this if you are wanting a vegan dish with higher protein and excellent flavor. We had attempted to order their Chaat Papdi appetizer but they said they weren't making it at this time, likely due to its complexity. The real surprise for us was their vegan Samosa Chaat. Absolutely loved the chickpeas scattered on top of some flaky samosas, all plant based. Combine that with the tamarind chutney and you've got yourself a delicious snack. Side note - my friend who normally doesn't eat spicy commented that the medium was not spicy enough. So I definitely would kick it up to the hot scale if you're someone that likes a bit of spice. Service was good but felt a bit slow at times even though we were the only ones dining for a period of time. We felt comfortable dining inside although it was a bit weird to us that they sat the only other party right next to our booth. Luckily we're all vaccinated on our end. Finally, San Leandro has a good Indian restaurant! As someone who has tried every single Indian restaurant in town, I have to say this is by far my favorite. Very good food here and the owners are super nice. We've done dine-in and takeout here and the food is good no matter if you eat it there or take it to go. The last time we ate here we did dine-in and it actually appeared to me that we got a little more food in our takeout orders compared to what we got at the restaurant, but I don't say that with 100% confidence. But there did seem to be a minor difference in the amount of food. I always go with the chicken vindaloo here and they never do me wrong. It is so delicious and comes with chunks of potato. However, beware that when they say spicy here, they MEAN spicy. I love spicy food but I had to start ordering mine medium from Indian Grill because their hot levels were hotter than most Indian restaurants I've been to. If you like spice, I'd suggest starting with the medium heat level first to see what you think before moving onto the spicy; it's not "damage your tastebuds and destroy your stomach" hot, but it's got some major heat. The naan is great here, too. We got the samosa chaat the last time we went and really loved that, along with the chicken biryani. We've tried a number of other dishes, like the butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, and one of the curries (can't remember if it was either goat or lamb), and have been really happy with all of the food here. This has become our go-to delivery spot for Indian food that is consistent! We typically order garlic naan, tadka dal, butter chicken, aloo saag, and rice. We've strayed a few times to get bhindi (too greasy) and dal makhni (could use a bit more flavor, and mango lassi (unfortunately gets forgotten in our order numerous times). The fish pakora is decent as well. It's a little tough to swallow that the rice is $5 per box, but do we order it anyway? Sure do! I've ordered from Indian Grill twice for takeout, and I highly recommend their food, especially for parties. Medium spice is just that: medium spice. Good flavor and doesn't blow anyone's head off, especially considering my very spice-sensitive husband. At least he and I can agree on that point! While it may seem as though the entrees are pricey, keep in mind that they're generous. My advice for a party of 10-12 is to order 6 entrees, 3 orders of rice, and 1 order of onion-garlic naan, which you can cut into smaller servings to serve your party. You should be good to go. Favorites: Chicken mushroom tikka masala, Chicken vindaloo, Aloo palak saag, Lamb palak, Mattar malai methi paneer. If you want to start your party of 10-12 with appetizers, you might consider two orders of the veg pagoda, which comes with tamarind and (I think) mint sauce. I just moved to San Leandro and wanted some good Indian food, so I came to this restaurant. Most Indian restaurants are hit or miss so I went in with low expectations, but I was surprised at how good it was. I really enjoyed the food! The food is authentic and isn't overpriced. I've eaten at other Indian restaurants that's more pricey with half the food you get here. I ordered the goat curry and it was delicious. My friend ordered the butter chicken and chicken biryani and it was great also. The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because they don't serve white rice with their entrees. When they brought my food out I noticed there wasn't any rice so I asked the waitress for the rice, and she said it doesn't come with entrees. I was very shocked. I've never ate at an Indian restaurant that doesn't serve rice with their entrees. Mind you that you also have to pay for naan, so essentially if you don't order rice or naan, you're just eating the entree alone. I think this is very bizarre. Terrible customer service. If you care about customer service definitely eat elsewhere. The food is amazing though. I've been to this location multiple times and each time it's some sort of issue. The first experience a young man at the register said I didn't order spicy, however that's all I order :/ I politely asked him if he could fix the order for me because I don't order mild and he said no there was nothing he could do. I wanted to give them another try because the food is really good but my second experience was similar. It was a phone order with another young man and upon pickup I noticed my receipt was incorrect, he insisted the receipt just didn't match the order. I asked him to check with the chef and the order turned out to be wrong. They did fix it for me this time. Third experience, I attempted placing a phone order with a lady and she put me on hold. I waited over 5 minutes and called back. She answered and I could hear her speaking to someone else and she never came back to the phone. I've taken so many friends here because Indian Grill became one of my favorite spots for Indian food! They offer lunch buffet both on weekends and weekdays for $15 including tax. It's such a steal! The server also let me know that parking in the adjacent lot is free for restaurant patrons. They also get extra points for having each dish labeled, no more guessing! Their menu rotates. Every time I've come they had different dishes. I loved trying all the curries, they're tasty and have a good balance of both sauce and meat/veggies. Some of my favorites were: Paneer Tikka, Mushroom Tikka, Egg Curry, Butter Chicken, Malai Kofta, Biryani. The tandoori chicken here is really moist. The naan is crispy and they even gave us the option to get garlic naan. Don't forget to save room for dessert their mango soft serve is delicious! Room for improvement: -Their chai tea is kind of watered down, not much flavor in it -The saag isn't my favorite, could be thicker -No paper towels in the sink area Overall, a great buffet with lots of options. I looked at the menu online, and was going through their Vegan options. I was shocked by two dishes they claim to be Vegan. Yet, it says a touch of Cream and Butter. That was a huge Red Flag. We went here for my brother in laws bday with the entire family. The food was amazing. Every dish was done to perfection and had its unique flavor. We had the chilli chicken, Muglai Paneer, goat curry, chicken curry, daal makhni. Each dish was a delight and this coming from an Indian and someone who cooks these same foods at home is a big compliment. My mother in law is a great chef and eve she loved this place! We saw a diverse crowd here and a lot of to go orders. This place is amazing and I am glad we found it it deserves all the hype. The chef in the back is killing each recipe and order. We visited yesterday for dinner and were welcomed Ordered vegetable samosas and their chicken soup to start with and also a large Taj Mahal beer. All these items were a great beginning to our evening. Both these dishes were truly excellent. I ordered Lamb Biryani which was a mistake on my part......overwhelming amount of rice with pieces of lamb and bland to say the least. My girlfriend ordered the Lamb Korma which was very good but surprised to receive only the dish and no rice. Our server didn't mention that rice is an extra item. We were running low on beer (no wine is offered) so we ordered another small Taj Mahal and this one was flat and stale.......checking the date code showed it was from 2021 and over 2 years old. Not impressed. The dining room is pleasant but dominated by two unused buffet setups sealed with cling wrap. Nice lighting arrangements however. The bill was pretty reasonable considering the quantity of food received. Upon leaving we found a $54 parking ticket which was a surprise, seeing that were were right in front of the restaurant. But it was getting dark and we missed the signs......need to watch out for this 24hour parking lot. read more

I love me a good hearty Dal on a chilly day! I passed by this restaurant when it was still undergoing renovations and was looking forward to giving it a try when it opened. I'm glad to see there's new Indian restaurants popping up in San Leandro, diversifying the area and providing more food options for the locals to explore. As I don't know many people who would want to enjoy Indian cuisine with me, I decided to just order something for pick up. I called in beforehand to ask for recommendations since I'm lactose intolerant and I know that a lot of Indian dishes contain cream or paneer or ghee. Also, since I'm not too familiar with Indian cuisine myself, I thought it would be best to ask for recommendations. The person on the other line said their Dal Tadka is good, so that's what I went with. From what I experienced over the phone, their service is good. The person who spoke with me was patient and nice when I told them that I'm lactose intolerant. He was a little hard to understand with the heavy accent - I don't blame him though, and definitely don't let cultural barriers scare you from trying new experiences! When I arrived to pick up my Dal Tadka, I realized that the guy I talked with over the phone was the front counter guy. I again asked him for some more food recommendations because I thought it would be easier for him to point out some items on the menu instead of telling me over the phone. Their menu is pretty extensive by the way, so if you're asking me to look for something on the menu while on the phone, it would take a couple minutes to find exactly what he's talking about. He was kind enough to do a small run down of the menu and tell me what to look out for if I'm looking for items that specifically do not have cheese, milk, butter, etc. Very nice of him to give me tips! First impression of my Dal Tadka - I thought it was a small portion for nearly $10 (tax included), but eyes can be deceiving sometimes! This definitely proved to be filling and satisfying. I ordered my Dal Tadka with medium spice level, and it was fantastic! It was spicy, but not to the point where it's burning. The aroma was definitely there. The best way I can describe it is that it's almost porridge-like in texture, but very flavorful, which to me, makes it a great comfort food on a cold day. Also, by the time I got home, it was still piping hot. The Dal Tadka, which I never had prior to this, is labeled as an "All time favorite yellow lentil" on their menu, and I can see why after having a taste of it myself. The only thing I wish they would do is add a side of basmati rice or some naan for dipping/mixing. I did notice that they didn't supply utensils for my pick up order though, until I asked for a spoon.. which they didn't have. They only had forks, so I decided to just take my order home with me to enjoy, otherwise it would be hard to eat. It could just be because they only opened recently and are still trying to get into the hang of things. Not a big deal, and if possible, I'd like to avoid using plastic anyways. I'd definitely come back here to try some more menu items. Going to slowly introduce myself to more Indian food since there's a couple new restaurants in San Leandro, and this one has made a good impression on me.
