Just ordered from what used to be our favorite Indian place in Madison but it has changed considerably. I would guess the chef has changed because everything was different and not in a good way. The chicken pakora was glorified chicken strips, the Saag Paneer was a shadow of its former self, runny, watery, very little cheese and without the heat I had requested. My partner's Shrimp Vindaloo was a disappointment, though the heat was a 20 on a scale of 1 to 10. Sadly, it will be a long time before we ever order from here again. read more

I've been coming here a long time with my family and we always enjoy our meals here! The food is solid, and consistently good. We often get chicken tiki masala, lamb saga, lamb vindaloo, okra, naan, poori; and we also frequent the buffet. You won't ever go wrong with the buffet food, although if you like very spicy food you'll need to ask for a side of chili peppers as it is spiced for a pretty white audience. (As to be expected in suburban NJ) The decor is what you would expect from a typical Indian restaurant, which I enjoy. Been to this restaurant a week back. And couldnt find a reason to give it less than 5 star. We had dinner buffet. Samosa, dahi bada were awesome. Main course had matar paneer, shaam severa kofta and tasted awesome. Each and everything was too good. Specially service provided by manager Sunil made us feel great. I would recomemnd this restaurant to everyone who is lover of indian food . Forgot to mention about ambience... "I didn't know how much I love Indian food until I started coming here for the lunch buffets. Still far from an expert, I just shuffle down the assortment of offerings spooning as I go. Back to my table where a carafe of water and a basket of warm naan is waiting. Then I work around the plate trying to remember what I'm eating so I can go back for more. Usually I haven't eliminated a single dish for being unsatisfactory from the first plate to the second. I love the smells of the spices that perfume the room. Immediately upon walking in we knew we had made a great decision to try this restaurant. Greeted by one owner with the warmth of a dear friend, and waited on by the co-owner (a brother and sister team). We were treated like honored guests in their home by Sonny, and had one of the best Indian meals that I can recall. Rosemary Naan was a big hit, as were the Saag Paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala. I enjoyed eating at Begum Palace with a friend. I do not eat a lot of Indian food, so I enjoyed being able to sample new items.

This restaurant changed ownership about a year ago. A reliable source told me that the original chef was back; good news. We have enjoyed the food there for years, especially Saag Gosht. But last night was bad news. For years, 3 condiments were always included, with extra if requested and they were very fine. Last night to our surprise, no condiments were included. Worse, this time the Saag Gosht was very tough and chewy, a huge disappointment compared to the very tender lamb dish we had enjoyed for years. I hope this does not indicate that the overall food quality is declining. Art H. read more

If there was an option to negative rating I would gladly give it because this place doesn't even deserve one star. We ordered two biriyani and asked to make one spicy. Not only the biriyani was below par, for the spicy order they just mixed spoonsful of chilli powder making it a horrendous color. The biggest joke was the cheque a handwritten one scribbled by the owner you can hardly make out what's scribbled on it, there were some items we didn't recognize on it and they successfully overcharged us since we didn't question then. We love this restaurant. We ate there regularly and have done so for over a year. The owners are welcoming, warm and very concerned for their costumes satisfaction. A most caring staff. The food, which we have tasted a variety of by this time, is excellent. We have favorites which we have ordered multiple times and these entrees have be concistently excellent. We have tasted the diverse and changing buffet selections and have discovered new dishes as well as finding more pleasure arising from Northern Indian cuisines. Our understanding of the consistency of the food's excellence is due to the quality of their ingredients: all authentic, fresh and delicious. The key to each dish's tastefulness. The staff is very sensitive to the amount of spiciness you prefer and present it each dish as desired by the diner. This place is wonderful and a real gastronomic eerie nice for those who love to eat and like to meet caring restaurnteurs. You get great value for what it costs to eat here. My first experience with Begum was via takeout that our friends had ordered a few times. I always thought it was quite good. Since then we have eaten dinner at the restaurant several times and the food was even better! Something about a samosa coming out to the table piping hot...crispy and delicious... How good the naan is is always important and it's very good here. Favorites (aside from both types of samosa) are the mugalai korma, the baby eggplant, tandoori chicken. They usually seem to have a number of specials not on the web site. Chutneys are great and they have the red onion kind you don't see everywhere. Additionally the owners are sincere and friendly, great to chat with (if you're not over sensitive to the way the husband sometimes interacts with staff and customers). Our favorite option in the area since the wonderful Raagini on rt. 22 shut down. read more

I give this 5 stars bc not only can you actually eat healthy when you eat out by visiting Begum Palace, the owner (Raj) actually tailors the meals to your nutrition needs. Gluten-free? sure, No cow dairy, they have that!, no red meat options, vegetarian. the list goes on and on. Also a BYOB, oh yea, and prices are unbelievably fair. Finally, they actually put a lot of work into the meals and make them from scratch. One of the best is the potato patties with chickpea flower. Unreal flavor. My favorite Indian place in New Jersey (and there are many, as you might imagine!). My favorite dishes (so much that I rarely stray) are the mango lassi, vegetarian samosas with amazing chutney, garlic naan, saag paneer, and malai kofta. I've also had saag aloo, aloo gobi, and Chana masala - all fantastic. My family has had the Rogan Josh (or as they call it, Josh Groban), and they think highly of it too. read more

Delicious food with a few more exotic specials. The dishes actually taste different and are not a 'generic curry' flavor. We have been several times and when undecided the host whips up an off the menu speciality. All the staff is friendly and Sonny adds an extra element of fun to the dinner. I have been going to this restaurant for 5 years and every time, it's always a surprise... their food can be fantastic some days and very mediocre on some days. I must say that lately, it has been fantastic. In the last 2 weeks, we had a couple of chicken dishes and some veg dishes. They were of a very distinct, rich taste. All spices were just right and presentation was perfect. Very enjoyable experience. The owners and staff are very nice. Very attentive and prompt. I must say though, avoid the water bottles on the table.. they are pricey! If the quality continues, I'll return and give this restaurant 5 stars. read more

LOVE this place. Completely surprised the first time I went. It is in the Staples plaza and gets kind of lost. It's surrounded by pizza and the laundromat, but when you walk in, the atmosphere is beautiful and the staff is very friendly. It is much more upscale inside than expected, but still reasonably priced. Most importantly the food is to die for. There are not many Indian restaurants around. Even their lunch buffet is always very fresh and hot. I always jump at the opportunity to eat here! read more
