The food isn't good. It is made heavily with coconut oil and the taste is really bland. I grew up around Indian food and really enjoy restaurants that capture the essence and flavor of Indian cuisine; this food does not do that. Chutneys were runny, samosas were bland, tandoori mix was dry and lacked flavor. The naan bread was fine. Very good Indian food can be found in Morristown, Parsippany, or Bloomfield. I ordered three entrees and only received one container of white rice. Each entree use to and usually comes with its own individual white rice. The portions keep on getting smaller and smaller. Great Indian food. You can tell all of the ingredients are fresh and time is taken to make each and every dish. The Mango coconut shrimp appetizer was truly AMAZING. I have never tasted anything like this at Indian restaurants and/ or anywhere else. If you come here you should definitely try this!!! The menu is extensive with options for everyone! The curries are all tasty and all have unique ingredients that makes each one enjoyable to try. The Chicken vindaloo was good but be prepared for the spice! The only con here is that the service is pretty bad. We ordered promptly and were in the restaurant for at least two hours. I am a long time customer of Begum Palace--since the 1990s (!) and have always been a fan of theirs and introduced MANY people there over the years. I hadn't been there since COVID but was pleased to see that they had brought back their lunch buffet. The food was fine, and I realize prices have gone up, but I was charged $6.00 EACH for 2 lemonades. I have never been charged this much in my life for what is essentially just a soft drink, anywhere--even at a bar. Meanwhile the menu here lists soft drinks at 2.95, and shakes and smoothies at 4.95 or less. I cannot help but feel that I was intentionally taken advantage of. To make matters worse, they have added a 3% surcharge if you use a credit card, but this was not disclosed ahead of time and I only learned of it *after* I got the bill. Because I have been going there for so long and the food was fine, I did not have the heart to give them the one star review they deserve. But please take note, BP, these types of business practices are how you lose long time customers like myself. I hope you will rethink your policies. read more

My friends have a small car restoration shop in Chatham. I like to visit because they always have cool old cars in for repair. They have taken me to Begum several times and each time, I have come away smiling. They, like many local Indian cuisine restaurants, have a one price buffet that includes salad, soup, main dish and dessert. Yesterday, I had lunch and decided I had enough experience with this establishment and the cuisine in general to write a useful review. First, the owner is on the premises. That is key to non-chain eateries because an owner is always going to be thinking about making the customers happy and coming back. Next, the room is spotlessly clean. That is very important too as, I think, it tells you what's going on in the kitchen. Add in that we were greeted by a friendly and professional waiter and the environment earns full marks. The buffet had just about every classic Indian dish you could want. My friend is a vegetarian and I'm an omnivore, but we both found more then enough offerings to fill our plates and then our tummies! This is wonderful local find. Many moons ago, someone in NYC said: "oh, you live where? Have you ever heard of THIS place? No? It's nearby! Best Indian food in NJ - you should go". There you have it: good reputation from far away. So, the very first time we drove up to the restaurant, thought we had the wrong address because: a strip mall... aaaand... nothing decent ever comes out of a strip mall. Well, good thing we stayed! The service is always great - you become one of the family. Ask questions about the menu, and they will happily steer you in the right direction and tell you exactly what you are eating. Our last visit was rather interesting in that, everyone had serious food sensitivities. We ended up having an amazing meal - all recommended. One dish especially, with saffron, was exquisite. Portions are generous and great for sharing, naan bread is amazing, rice can always be refilled, and don't leave without having a liquid dessert: a mango lassi. The food here is incredibly good. However, ordering takeout usually is a problem. There have been multiple times that I did not get my order fulfilled. I live 30 minutes away and they NEVER check the order before they give it to you. In fact they have the bag stapled so that you can't quickly look inside. The most recent time I ordered two main dishes - and they didn't give ANY rice. When I got home and called, he said that the rice was "complimentary" and not part of the order. I love indian food, especially anything that has lamb as protein. Anyways, tried this place out since it is 5 mins away from my job. Was SO GOOD, and portions are big so I had leftovers for next day. Decided to get some lamb kebabs on side with little side dishes that way it could be a full lunch. I WAS SO SAD. The lamb kebab were shaped literally like dog poo, and clearly so overcooked that it was more jerky and has 0% moisture retained. It literally made me so upset, even tried to submerging them in my leftover vindaloo but it was beyond saving. This restaurant is terrific. The food is excellent. Very fresh. Very flavorful. The owner- Sunny is probably one of the most polite, funny, warm and helpful restauranteurs I have ever encountered. We were visiting the area for a sports tournament. After Sunny helped us with our order and made some very yummy suggestions, we watched as EVERY person that walked in, knew him, gave him hugs hello and greeted him as if he were family. If everyone were as warm and enthusiastic about their work- imagine what an amazing place the world would be. I highly recommend this restaurant. How delightful - you must try this place! The service is so kind and welcoming. I felt like I was in someone's home. Some of the booths have pillows which also adds to that home feel. It's quiet with the music low, but not overly quiet where it's awkward to have a conversation. As for the food - delicious! I had aloo mutar with roti. Sooooo flavorful and complex. I ordered takeout. Was a bit disappointed. There were two issues. Firstly the quantity of meat was lesser than expected. The portion size was fine, it was the amount of meat/chicken in the dish. I felt that at that price, they should have put in couple more pieces of meat. Secondly, they messed up one of my orders. I had ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Curry. The Chicken Tikka Masala tasted fine. Regarding the Lamb Curry, I don't think I got Lamb curry, I think I got a different lamb dish. It was green with spinach. They might have made a mistake with my order. I didn't want to go all the way back, so I just let it be. New management took over a little over a year ago and has revamped the place making it much better. They have kept the chef but have increased thr food quality and have upgraded customer service. I was immensely shocked when the business owner had personally called me to apologize for my experience. At first when he mentioned giving me a credit for my next order, I was still hesitant -- but as he started to discuss their value's of their customer's experience I couldn't help but want to give them another shot. There's a saying that when the food isn't good, the customer service makes up for it -- but fortunately with this next experience I'm comfortable saying that both the food and the customer service were phenomenal. Dishes: 1) Vegetable Samosa (Rating: 5/5) - still my all time favorite, the fact that it stays crispy even after my drive home leaves me in wonders, also very tasty! 2) Paneer Samosa (Rating: 5/5) - this was a personal first for me; crispy deliciousness & intriguing 3) Garlic Naan (Rating: 5/5) - pretty good texture/quality; definitely something worth eating in the restaurant vs. to go 4) Chana Masala (Rating: 5/5) - one of my favorites; cooked just right and the spices were perfect 5) Chicken Tikka Masala (Rating: 4.5/5) - the chicken was somewhat on the dry side but the sauce is plenty flavorful; this dish was a little on the saltier side for me but still fairly good As for customer service -- superb! I honestly am glad I tried Begum Palace again. The management really aims to provide both delicious dishes and amazing customer service. I learned that the rice was mistakenly prepared incorrectly and I just happened to order during the mishap when that batch of rice was prepared. I really appreciate the time they took to explained what had happened and could tell they would try to prevent other customers from having such an experience. Definitely a place to come back to! Looking forward to trying more of their paneer dishes. :) Tips: # To-go orders - call! When I called, I was surprised to hear it would only take 25 minutes to prepare everything. So if you're trying to pick up on your own, call or use their website (not DoorDash). My first visit great, second visit good and third -- disappointing. Had Chicken Tikka Masala on a Tuesday night and it was in a tomato paste of a sauce with some mild Indian spices. Not worth the price, calories or finishing. Also, last week had the Lamb vindaloo. The amount of lamb in the dish - not so much -- plenty of potato though for $23. I would guess at least 30 plus percent was potato. Flavor of sauce good but not great. Tried the Tandoor Chicken, $24.00 for a dish that every other Indian restaurant sells for well under $20. The question is -- is it worth it -- not even at half the price. Overcooked, dry with a tandoor paste not fit for human consumption. Overpriced, poor quality and in general a major disappointment.
