I was excited to come here, based on both the Yelp reviews and the recommendation of my husband who had stopped here while on a work trip (we are from out of town). We were all starved with members of our party having just flown in to Jersey from CA and Europe hours earlier. We had made decisions quickly and placed an order by 7:35. Then we proceeded to wait until 8:30pm for our food to appear. What kind of place seats you and then doesn't have the ability to fulfill that order for AN HOUR AFTER you placed the order?? We were checking our phones/watches frequently, starved and having already scarfed down the papad, and then were HORRIFIED TO SEE A MOUSE running around near our table (by the front of the restaurant). We first spotted it maybe at 7:50. We didn't want to freak out the restaurant and quietly flagged the server/boss-looking-guy (maybe owner?); he sees it and freaks out and thanks us and then goes to the corner to try to catch the mouse. When he isn't able to, he just gives up and moves on to doing other restaurant things. The mouse kept reappearing AGAIN and AGAIN (or maybe there were multiple rodent?) And there was nobody in the wait staff actively doing anything about it. At one point, the mouse literally ran on top of the foot of a lady waiting to be seated and she jumped. The entire front of the restaurant table guests were horrified and just looking at each other like WTF. The others already had food which they had been eating, and unfortunate for us we were oscillating between F what if there are rodents in the kitchen too is our food safe, and then feeling like we couldn't leave because we already put in our order. At 8:30pm, after an hour of waiting to get food and 45 mins of losing our appetite watching the rodent - we flagged the waiter saying we wanted to cancel the order and just pay for our drinks and leave. He tells us the food will just be a few more minutes, and at this point I am SO freaked out and frustrated by the rodent that I just ask to have everything packed up and we'll eat it elsewhere (rodent free). We finally got our food to-go bag brought to our table by a woman who we hadn't encountered before, who just apologized for the wait and didn't seem to get how mad we were - not just about the wait but about having the staff be so nonchalant and not bothering to try to do anything about a rodent visible zipping around our table. At any other restaurant, the staff would have done SOMETHING to compensate this terrible experience - I've had an appetizer or drinks or the entire meal waived at other restaurants for much less of an issue (like a 45 min delay in getting food). These people just said sorry, then handed the 3 of us our full $70ish bill. If they had done ANYTHING to compensate or show their concern (or if they had the brains to devote attention and time to catching the rodent immediately when it was flagged), I wouldn't be writing a 1 star review (it's rare for me to rate anything so poorly). I couldn't get out of the restaurant fast enough. The boss/owner guy came after us saying that we could come back and sit inside to eat - the rat had moved back away from our table and was now by the bathroom/back... which is closer to the kitchen. How the f do you not see that this is WORSE because now you have a rodent by food prep that can be making your customers sick... idiots... Maybe the food is good (I lost my appetite but the two others in our party did eat the to-go, to which they thought it to be pretty meh Indian food) --- but after witnessing this I really really caution you about coming back. They clearly don't care about health/food safety. read more

After seeing great ratings on Yelp, went here again today after 2 years. Unfortunately, my opinion did not change and 5 other people who came with me felt that the food was below average. Restaurant had lunch buffet and items were limited. The tandoori chicken appetizer was a disaster. It lacked salt, spices, flavor. I felt they added red color to chicken and baked it. Visited this place on last Wednesday when I was traveling to NJ on recommendation from my co worker. I am so pleased with the personal touch by owner and greeting in local Rajasthani language. I've lived in DC for the last 14 years, and I have friends who grew up in the Chatham area who swore this place was amazing. I just moved back to the area and this place was one of my first stops. Original lunch plans for today fell through so ended up ordering Indian takeaway instead. We got chicken curry, chicken Vindaloo, chicken Tikka Masala, & Saag Paneer. Packaging was all very neat & tidy. Curries are packed in plastic tubs and tightly wrapped in plastic so nothing leaks or spills during transit. Each lunch box contains a vegetable samosa, a small cup of kheer/rice pudding, & a tiny cup of what I'm guessing is some kind of chutney, all buried under a mound of basmati rice. The naan was all lumped together and wrapped in aluminum foil to keep it warm (Each person gets two large pieces/halves) I really enjoy Indian food but I'm not good at distinguishing different curries so I really wish the dishes had been labeled. The only thing I recognized for sure was the Saag Paneer, and I hazarded a guess at which dish was the Vindaloo (it smelled a bit like potatoes and looked thicker than the others). They didn't skimp on the protein at all though, there was plenty of chicken & paneer to go around The samosa is probably the best I've ever had (and maybe the biggest): crisp, flaky pastry stuffed to almost bursting with savory potato & pea filling. And it tasted even better with what might have been chutney (it was a little sour, a little sweet). The naan was also really big and it was still warm when I unwrapped it from the foil; it has a nice chew and makes a great vehicle for flavor, aka all those curries. The kheer might still be my favorite though - a light milky rice pudding, not too sweet, and tasting faintly of cinnamon or cardamom. Ultimately, I ended up trying a bit of everything ordered, and they were all lovely & aromatic, but I was definitely expecting a little more heat. My spice tolerance is not great but I found it all quite mild. Overall, not the best I've ever had but still really delicious and I ate way more than I should have (one lunch entree could feasibly feed two people but I missed breakfast today and probably polished one off all by myself) so that's in their favor. read more

Great food here and even better company. The owner/manager always greets you with a smile, remembers you, and offers polite conversation. He fluffs a pillow and puts it behind your back to ensure your comfort when seated in the booth. This place is BYOB - a convenient liquor store is right next store. Another positive about my current fascination with Pickleball is that I've gotten some excellent restaurant recommendations, Begum Palace being the very latest. I'll preface this review by saying that I'm not a huge fan of Indian food, but this is the real deal, and I dare anyone to find better, more authentic Indian cuisine in this area. The vegetable samosas were delightful. I like my food spicy, and thankfully I ordered the chicken madras medium as opposed to hot, and I definitely felt the burn. The saag paneer was fairly standard, but very good as well. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who fancies solid Indian food. I shall return, and when I do I'll be sure to bring cash, since I learned albeit a bit too late that when you pay cash there is a 10% discount. Begum Palace has always been our go-to Indian in the area. It has been awhile since we ordered from here. We had it delivered tonight and it was terrible. We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala (medium) and when I opened the container, the sauce was unusually thick and when I tasted it, it was sweet and honestly just not good at all. I had a hard time eating it. The chicken was extremely dry too. The naan was good. Overall, very disappointed by the food. The quality has gone done significantly. We enjoyed a delicious meal at Begum Palace. This restaurant has a very homey feel. There is very much a family type feel from the second you walk in the door. The owner greets everyone.. and seems to remember those returning to his restaurant. As newcomers, he introduced himself and was very welcoming. The place was very busy for a late Thursday night which shows how much people enjoy eating at this restaurant. The food was delicious and we were very satisfied with everything we ordered. When I used to work in the city, it was easy to find good Indian restaurants. However, in north Jersey, it's a tough pick. There are a good few that claim to be "good" but after dining there a few times, it was very disappointing. We took a chance and drove a bit farther in search of a good Indian restaurant and stumbled upon Begum Palace. It doesn't look like much from outside but inside it's cozy. I also liked that they played ethnic music which set the mood. So ambiance and appearance check. Since it was our first time there, the manager helped us with some of the choices; definitely a plus point. We ordered a couple of appetizers and my favorite was the pani puri served with mint pani (spiced water). It was quite delicious and I wish I had more puris to finish off the pani. For our entrees, we ordered Bhooni Bhindi, Spinach and cheese kofta, Achari chicken kebab with a side of Basmati rice and Peshawari Naan. I must say we enjoyed all the items on our table. I'm not a big meat eater but I liked the Achari chicken kebab. It was flavorful and juicy. Even after all that food, I was still contemplating dessert. The manager stopped by to check how we were doing and suggested a dessert; gulab jamun. So we went with his suggestion and I hoped he wouldn't let us down. I've tasted that dessert in other restaurants and it has always been either too dense or dry. My eyes lit up when I saw the plate of mouth watering balls of sweetness (you have to see the picture to believe me). It didn't take us long to finish every last jamun. The decor is simple, ok, a bit in need of an update, but who can notice when the incredibly warm owners welcome you and serve truly fabulous food. Super bummed. Went to place an order and noticed that they menu was different and was missing their delicious onion chutney. I called and asked if the changed the menu because I didn't see it. They said that the menu had not changed and said the chutney was still available.Fast forward, food arrived. Our normal dishes are not the normal bright colors. Chicken is dry, onion chutney is mush. I called again and asked if they changed ownership. They didn't seem to want to give a straight answer. Who knows? It's not the same delicious food it used to be. My fiancé ended up finding this restaurant as we were in the neighborhood for Dr's appt. But omg the warm welcome by Sunil (the owner) itself caught my attention! Being Indian & trying so many Indian restaurants, I have never felt this comfortable with any Indian restaurant owner. He made sure our first time was "the very best we had at any Indian restaurant". And it worked! Starting from the delicious appetizer to the extra ordinary main dishes that he made for us, for which he didn't even gave us the names of it & yet it tasted like authentic Indian dishes you eat in India. The 1st picture is of three different delightful desserts & the second picture is of special Ghee-Tarka Daal (Indian butter Lentil Curry). Second, Indian restaurant in New Jersey to have this amazing ambience, kind & very friendly customer service & to the point taste. Definitely recommended if you are in neighborhood or not! It was simply amazing. I am from Jaipur, Rajasthan, so mirchi vada is close to my heart. It was indeed very authentic and tasty! Paneer tikka was amazing as well. In main course we had Chicken methi (kasuri methi) - one of their special dishes, some special kofta curry, shrimp masala, and kadhai paneer. The chicken and kofta were secret dishes which were not on the menu! And boy were we not glad to have that served to us!! We got ice-cream in our desserts. But you guys should try their Gulab jamun, gajar ka halwa, and kheer as an assorted dessert option. We were given complementary kheer!! Yay! I recently used Begum Palace to cater a lunch. Sunny was so easy to work with! We ordered the chicken tikka masala, Chan a masala, raita, rice and naan. The food was delicious! There are quite a few staff members who are very particular about their Indian food, since they are from India, and they were very pleased. I will definitely be using Begum Palace again in the future. We ordered everything mild, and it was perfect. The chicken was very fresh, and all the sauces were so flavorful. The naan I felt was outstanding, because it wasn't hard, but also not too doughy. I look forward to trying their lamb dishes in the future! read more

The only reason it's not five stars is that I got take-out, so I can't judge service. I ordered the Crab Samosa, Chicken Tikka Masala, and some Naan. First off, the attention to packaging was the best Ive ever seen. Everything was wrapped in plastic wrap, which kept me and my car safe from spills. The Samosa was packed with paper that absorbed the steam and kept them crispy.....unlike gyoza, egg rolls or or any other fried I've gotten as take-out from a Chinese restaurant or similar place. Second, they were extremely polite and helpful - graciously answering my phone call inquiring about the sauces and chutney that were packaged with my food after I got home. Third, and perhaps it should have been mentioned first, the food was delicious! I ordered the food medium,asking for "American" medium (if you've ever been to India, you know that mild is VERY spicy, LOL. The heat was actually a bit too mild for me, but the flavor was great. You could taste the different spices, and nothing was overpowering. My only complaint is that the Naan was an add-on. How can you eat Tikka Masala without it? I'll definitely be going back again. PS Here is a hint: Save the sauce and use it to make a dish at home. This is something I do often with other take out. The left over Tikka Masala sauce will be put to use with some grilled shrimp in a couple days. Of course, you could used it instead with grilled chicken, pork, or fish. First and foremost We went there on a first date and both of us were very impressed with this restaurant! the food was excellent everything was perfect curry was awesome all food was inc readable (The Meat Samosa, Lamb Tikka Masala, Lamb Saag-Wala Garlic Roti followed up with an order of Ginger tea and Gulab Jamun). If that wasn't enough the staff was also excellent, the Manager (Sunil), the cashier,bus boys, waiters even the delivery person were all polite and very professional. I observed their interactions with other customers and they were exceptional with the customers and even their children. We requested a change of tables and were accommodated just as soon as they could facilitate our move in a crowded restaurant w/o question.
