I feel duped... was hyped about coming due to the reviews as Yelp has NEVER steered me wrong until this evening. Came for an early dinner around 4:30pm and started with the Papadum and chutneys which was okay. No oil and the papadum wasn't warm but still crispy so it was nothing special. Got an appetizer of Vegetable Pakoras which was unlike any other veg pakora I've ever had - very very disappointing. It was dry inside with not much vegetable and tons of dense breading inside. I kept trying to pick it apart because the outside looked beautiful but the inside and taste was subpar. Also got Chicken Tikka Masala. What's up with the 6.5 pieces of chicken guys? And 1 "chunk" was a tomato segment disgusted as a piece of chicken. I actually laughed as there wasn't even enough chicken to count as 1 portion as it was. Don't even get me started on the Naan bread. It was thin flatbread! I eat Indian every month and try to always visit new places so I've had more than my fair share of different Naans. But this was not naan bread. It was dense and flavorless to boot. Look at the photos I attached - judge for yourself. Service was excellent - very attentive and our table was small so even without me asking he put the other table to join ours so we had more space. I live 1 block away & get to enjoy Indian Tanpura's food whenever I want! Pictured are the vegetable samosas (2 per order), Saag Paneer, garlic naan & aloo paratha, and Chicken Kashmir. Every time we order we get the samosa: absolutely excellent with the sauces & garlic. Saag Paneer is a standout too, that's part of most of our orders. We've tried almost all of the curried dishes, and others like Rogan Josh, lamb moglai and have enjoyed them all. Proceed with caution on the vindaloo, one of the spiciest I've had! A small, cozy 8-9 table place with delicious food and excellent service. I was in my way to a different place for Indian food, but I was really hungry, and the awning and A rating caught my eye. I ordered what I know, and when asked about spice level, told the gentleman that I like a little heat but not knowing their standard, I'd go "light" to learn their base. The chicken tikka masala was delightfully creamy with a sweet element (smelled like cinnamon) that brought a balance to the dish. I might add a little more spice next time. The rice was perfectly prepared. I started with slightly doughy and expertly crunchy vegetable samosa. The three dips/sauces (sweet, hot, and chopped onions with a light sauce) were incredibly fresh, and either separately or combined enhanced the flavor and texture of the samosa. The final taste was hot black tea brewed with sliced ginger. Perfect. The only negative is the acoustics. The music was pleasant yet loud, and I wondered if the volume was the reason the other party in the place spoke loudly to one another. Although intrusive, it's an annoyance that can be resolved. My friend and I dined here for dinner the same day I had a wisdom tooth extraction. Thankfully, most of the food was soft and easy to eat. The interior was lovely and the atmosphere was cozy, as well as peaceful. I had to get the Mango Lassi, which was wonderfully thick, creamy, sweet, and refreshing. For my meal, I ordered the Thali-E Samunder combination platter, which is took about 25 minutes to prepare. This consisted of Crab meat, shrimp saag, fish masala, raitha, naan, rice and dhal makhni. I requested this with Garlic Naan, which was delicious! This was thin and satisfyingly crispy. There was plenty of garlic, spices, along with butter on top, making for strong garlic taste (which is sometimes hard to find). All the different components of the platter was served in round silver bowls, on a circular silver plate, which was reminiscent of how some entrees are plated in India. My favorite dishes were the Fish Masala and Shrimp Saag. The Fish Masala was delightfully tender, flaky, and full of yummy seasoning with bold flavors of onion, tomatoes, chilies, and fresh herbs. The Shrimp was juicy and succulent. There was also a veggie dish with lentils, onion, and more, which had great depth of flavor. The rice was cooked perfectly, and was yummy with the different sauces. I couldn't really taste the Crab though. Service was solid. Our waiter was kind and attentive. Prices are decent, especially for the area. I would return to try the Tandoori Mixed Grill, Shrimp Biryani, Lamb Korma, and Kulfi (Indian ice cream). read more

I've lived in this neighborhood for over 30 years and have walked past Indian Tanpura many times. Well, tonight I was craving Indian cuisine and boy was I lucky to get off the subway at 86th Street. This place is the real deal. Do not expect a fancy place for tourists so much as a very small (mostly take-out) place for locals. The server could not be more gracious and welcoming. The only other patrons inside the restaurant were a local big mouth and two flight attendants, in the know, from Air France. I was craving Chicken Vindeloo. The server asked me if I wanted it prepared Indian style or mild. Well, this dish is not for the timid. It's as hot (spicy) as the sun on the Ganges in summer. I loved it with the basmati rice and a little bit of bread (poori). It is deep fried but light and fluffy. Authentic. I was able to make two meals out of the dinner and I left the restaurant like a fire-breathing dragon. Do not be discouraged by this. There are mild and flavorful dishes on the menu. When you are visiting the UWS and having a hunger pang for Indian cuisine, this is a good choice. I'll certainly return. read more

A gem of the UWS, and one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the entire city. The storefront doesn't stand out at all, and the inside of the restaurant is small and rather quaint. There are no fancy decors, and everything is just incredibly simple, including the food. However, the taste of the food just speaks for itself. I've been here about a dozen times, and more than half the time I order the shrimp vindaloo (including this time), and it has never disappointed. This is the only place where I can order vindaloo, don't specify spiciness level, and it comes out perfect (and spicier than most places when I order extra spicy). They insist on using baby shrimp, which might be disappointing to some, but it keeps prices low (especially for this part of town), and really it tastes amazing. I might even argue that it tastes better than larger shrimps since it mixes much more easily with rice. For those of you getting takeout: please give dining in a shot. The staff is truly exceptional and really do their best to make your experience pleasant, in a casual and home-like atmosphere. Love this place, and I'll be a regular for as long as I am in the city. read more

Hands down, the best Indian food on the east coast. This is a huge claim, I know, but Indian Tanpura is absolutely brilliant when it comes to food selection, value, and atmosphere. The owner is an incredibly kind man who says hello every time we walk past the place. Their coconut curry, chicken curry, and chicken tikka masala is easily the best I've ever had. Based on the reviews, I had high hopes for this restaurant, but they were sorely dashed. This is a mediocre Indian restaurant with food that really isn't that great. I arrived yesterday at 5:00 PM, and there was no one there. This is tiny restaurant with pretty good atmosphere that seats about 22 people. I was seated at a table just inside the door. The servers were friendly. During my stay there, only 4 other people entered the restaurant. Two were seated, one was takeout, and one seemed to be a delivery person - not very busy. When I go to a new Indian restaurant, I usually order the same thing - lamb korma, basmati rice, raita, and poori. The lamb korma isn't supposed to be spicy, but it is usually flavorful. This lamb korma was bland with too much meat and not enough sauce. Although the lamb was tender, I like lots of sauce to finish up the dish with the rice. The rice was typical white rice, nothing special. I've had much better raita. This was yogurt with some mini pieces of cucumber. The poori was okay, but not as flaky and good as I have become used to. I had a glass of Malbec, which wasn't very good; so my second glass of wine was Chardonnay, which was a little better than the Malbec, but not that great. Having dined at the wonderful former Hevele and UWS Mughlai, my standards for Indian food are high. This restaurant didn't come close to my expectations. It is doubtful I will return. I'm still searching for an Indian restaurant to match what I have known in the past. read more

I was with 6 other friends at 8:30pm on a Saturday night. All other nearby restaurants had 30min or longer waits. Only two people were eating at Indian Tanpura. The place is small but very nice and well kept. They said they could take as and quickly re-arranged some tables. The Mulligatawny soup was spectacular! The Chana Poori was amazing!!!
