This place just keeps getting better. I need to see them featured on more "best of" lists for Bakersfield! The food is beyond incredible. I can't stop eating the paneer butter masala (surprising to absolutely no one), and the garlic naan. If you're brave, get it spicy-- it will blow your face off, but in a good way (like a hot kiss instead of a bomb). But be warned-- their drinks come in cans and if it's super hot, you may need to order more than one, lol. I impressed my company by not needing to drink much during my spicy meal, and yes this is a casual heat tolerance brag, I'm sorry! Anyway, the service is really wonderful even if the communication can be a little rusty because I'm a basic monolingual bish. They just want you to enjoy your food and your time with them, so don't be shy and ask questions if you're unsure about something you're ordering. They have vegan and vegetarian options. I've only gone with meat eaters and they have not been disappointed. This is one of the best restaurants in Bakersfield and I'm worried people are totally asleep at the wheel on this one. I cannot say enough good things about the food here. I have not been disappointed in all the times I ate at Indian Village. Today I had the Garlic Naan, ALWAYS great, the Basmati Rice, and the Paneer Tikka Masala. Heaven!!!!!. I am stuffed and happy. While driving from LA to SF around dinner time, we searched for a vegetarian place on Google and are so glad we stopped here. The food was absolutely soulful and delicious. We loved the dal fry and saag paneer, and the breads, especially the aloo paratha and roti were incredibly comforting, just like a home-cooked meal my mom would make. First time we visited this place at 8 pm, it was full. The owner very humbly apologized for their inability to provide us dinner. Given the high reviews, we went the next day promptly around their opening time. Wow, our patience paid off! The owner very politely took our order and while we waited, he gave us chai and their home-made sweets from Punjab (we asked if we could buy this milk burfi, unfortunately it was their stash he shared with us and it was out of this world experience). Next came hot dishes we ordered (parathas and dal - felt like we were eating at home!) - everything was done very thoughtfully in the kitchen, we could tell that easily. Its a family run business and I'd given more than 5 stars if I could. Please do visit this place when you're in Bakersfield. They've just started to build up the business so I hope it will be spruced up with infrastructure next time I go, regardless I'll visit anyway. read more

Found Indian Village while traveling from Death Valley to Bay Area - small family-run spot with top-notch food but limited support, so order everything at once and be patient. Everything is freshly made including naans and kulchas. Pro tip: Tell them your preferences upfront, I prefer thin crispy breads so I specified and got exactly that. The owners are new to the business and don't quite get customer service yet, had to pester to order what I wanted, but the food makes up for it! Kadhai Paneer was excellent with soft paneer chunks and bell peppers, redolent of spices. Chole were just okay. Amritsari Kulcha was a flavor bomb topped with fennel and sesame. We have been to this place a few times while traveling on the I-5 and the food never ceases to amaze me. We stopped in again a couple of days ago while traveling toward LA, and the food was absolutely perfect. It's a family-owned gem, and you can tell the owner, Yadvendra Singh 'Kaala,' takes immense pride in what they serve. We ordered the Aloo Paratha, Chole, Amritsari Kulche, and Doodh Patti. Everything was fantastic, authentic, and cooked fresh. They let you customize the spice levels. Nothing was greasy. The Kulche and the Paratha had the perfect balance with plenty of stuffing and very little dough. That's exactly the way they should be. In fact, I haven't had better Amritsari Kulche anywhere in the US, including the Bay Area. Heck, you'd be hard-pressed to find better in India. We also had the Doodh-patti, which was fantastic. If you grew up in North India, you probably know what that is. I haven't seen it offered anywhere else in the US. Kaala is a fantastic host and great to talk to as well. When we went, they were busy and running a shorter menu, so not every single item was available. However, we have tried many things on the menu over our various trips and everything has been amazing. If you are driving on the I-5 heading south toward LA or San Diego, or trekking north toward San Francisco, and craving vegetarian Indian food, do yourself a favor. Set your GPS for a short 17-mile detour into Bakersfield specifically for this place. read more

Stopped here when driving through Bakersfield looking for vegetarian restaurants. We shared the chickpea wrap, gobi masala, garlic naan, and gobi parantha. The food was good, and we would come back, with one caveat. I would've given it 4 stars, but when I paid with my credit card, the screen gave me tip options of 15, 18, 20... normal stuff, right? When I looked at my receipt, those were dollars instead of the standard percentage. So we left a 50% tip. My bad for not paying attention to the fact that it was dollars and not percents, but I have literally never seen that anywhere, it's always percent. Like why would I tip $20 on a $30 total? I had dinner in Indian Village restaurant yesterday and I must say that this is the BEST Vegeterian ONLY Punjabi special restaurant that I enjoyed in the last several years in US 1. I had Palak paneer and nan and this came with a salad. Palak paneer was tasty, hot, right level of spices and good quantity for 2 people. I hope they will maintain the quality and quantity. Nan was also equally good 2. Service is good and this restaurant is managed by two people 3. Cook came and spoke about how he has tried to use good ingredients to make a tasty dish. I will probably try again today with my daughter who is equally fond of good Vegeterian Punjabi restaurants 4. Location is convenient and just 5 mins off 99HWY. Anyone driving to LA or Vegas can stop and enjoy a nice meal 5. Price is reasonable. 6. It will be nice if they have one Thali option with 2-3 vegetables ( smaller quantity) so that you can taste all the vegetables 7. Ambience is food and they serve their dishes in plates unlike Bay Area where every restaurant uses paper plate. Only few places in California has what it takes to be called India restaurant this one is one of them because they make fresh food and it takes time and they don't serve if they can't eat it. We got several types of paranthas and chole bhatura, everything was so incredible that i ordered 2 more in greed! Upon eating the gobi parantha I felt like Hritik Roshan in Mujhse Dosti Karogee smelling Rani Mukherjee's food in London after so many years!! Both Sukhwinder didi and the chef didi (sorry, I did not catch her name) were incredibly accomodating; making garlic and onion free food for my mausi and making chai of two different chini levels for our group!
