this is the place to go for delicious sushi!! their menu is quite large, and they have thai food as well. we had been here once before, so we already know what we like. we got the ginger avocado salad, the vegetable tofu miso soup(minus the tofu, and with vegetable broth), la fiesta roll, monte carlo roll, and the summer passion. the actually salad was nothing special, but the sesame ginger sauce was AMAZING! it was sweet, but not too sweet, and it paired well w the veggies. the soup was good! nothing extraordinary, but definitely not bad. good veggies in it. la fiesta roll was probably my least favorite, because i prefer raw fish instead of smoky. the presentation of it was really pretty, with a blue sauce drizzled over it! the monte carlo roll was delicious! no bad things about it! the summer passion roll was my personal favorite!! the sauce that went with it just made it a hundred times better!! the only photo i got was of this roll. this sushi is the BEST i've ever had. it's a little pricey, but so worth the quality. read more

Okay, so I'm giving this place 4 stars because of a few things. 1. The atmosphere is very relaxing and still classy in a down-to-earth way 2. There are many different sushi rolls to choose from 3. They offer Thai food and great Thai crab rangoon 4. It's inexpensive All of these were reasons I enjoyed this place. The caterpillar roll, which had slices of avocado covering the roll was delicious (although if you don't like eel, I'm sure you could ask for something else). I do agree with another reviewer that this is not the place to go if you want extremely fresh raw sushi, but nonetheless I adore this place. Granted, maybe I liked this place because my expectations were so low before going in and it really took me by surprise. All in all, I'm sure I'l be back, if at least to try the Thai :) read more

I definitely recommend this place! We got the basil chicken and the pad Thai. The basil chicken is ground chicken which I really like. Some places use chunks of chicken which makes the chicken sort of bland. They use a lot of sauce in the basil chicken and it tastes so good. It's a bit spicy with the after taste. The pad Thai is a great choice as well. They use tamarind sauce. It's so good! I definitely recommend their pad Thai if you like that sweet, tangy taste. It's not too sweet or tangy--it's just right. The portions come pretty good in size. It's good enough to share for two people. The service was great. They're very nice and really tend to your table but not overbearing. read more

I am a regular here and usually love everything I order but today was a disappointment . They are going through construction so not sure if the best sushi chefs are off, but the rolls were completely off. Some may think it 's hard to mess up a roll, but today was definitely indie cafe'a off night. We ordered Tom Yum chicken and the chicken was a bit rubbery. The two rolls we ordered were the sex on the moon and Mexican and both were mediocre. The blue crab in the sex on the moon was very fishy, presentation was mediocre, and the Mexican roll had lettuce that was frozen and the tuna was very fishy. So so sad. This place has a lot of potential and maybe I was here on an off night. I like the ambience, prices are generally reasonable and it has a clean/modern vibe with contemporary paintings adorning the walls. Service is alright, I felt a bit rushed and they didn't really check on us after our food came out. Indie Cafe has a vast menu ranging from sushi to Thai curry so I was very excited to try what they had given how much I love both. It was cold outside so I was in more of a curry mood. I started out with a spicy miso soup, which was good, it felt like the spicy miso soup had jalapeños and some chili pepper in it as opposed to the mild miso soup. I think the spiciness could have been embodied more in the miso broth itself. It was quite a generous serving and it was still very cozy to eat. I tried their signature curry with the veggie mock duck. The signature curry is on the heavier side and it's a very generous portion for about $14. It comes with potatoes, zucchini, broccoli, crispy rice noodles and your option of brown/white rice. The curry sauce was reminiscent of a Massaman Curry Sauce. It had that perfect thick consistency that was hearty and super flavorful. The vegetables had a great texture and there was a generous portion of vegetables. I was disappointed with the mock duck. I have had it at other Thai restaurants and the preparation here was a bit underwhelming. First of all, the vegetarian mock duck didn't come out and it was just the vegetables, which is not the end of the world, it's easy to forget. I had to ask for the server's attention while she was texting, which felt awkward and asked about the veggie mock duck. She thought I just said veggie, that's okay. Then she asked me if I wanted a whole new dish or just wanted the mock duck out. I didn't want to be demanding so I just said the mock duck, but they should've just brought a new dish because the veggie mock duck by itself without the sauce is pretty bland and it needed to be sautéed with the sauce. The veggie mock duck is an extra $4 and it was pretty bland/not integrated into the dish obviously and they didn't take it off the bill and kept it on there. I thought that since they forgot to include it and didn't even make a new dish that they would've taken it off, but they didn't. This restaurant has gone so far downhill. I used to love Indie Cafe, but they have truly lost me as a patron forever. Over time the prices have gone up (expected), but the food quality has gone down. Yesterday my BFF and I went to grab lunch. There was one (ONE) other table in there with people and it took them 45 minutes to get an order of Drunken Noodles and order of Tom Yum Fried Rice. The noodles were so greasy that there was about an inch of oil in the bottom of my bowl, not to mention the absolute lack of flavor. I would recommend everyone to stay away from here and choose Ben's Noodles or another joint in the area, as this place has become absolute garbage. read more

After having a horrible week, driving 2 hrs in traffic on a Friday afternoon and then ending up missing my massage, the people at Soothe your Senses Day Spa recommended this place for dinner. They said it was really good and since the night was so perfect, it would be a nice walk to unwind. It was the sunshine in my bleak week. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table which went by pretty fast since I grabbed a menu to help me decide on what I should order. We were seated and immediately the server started taking care of us. We were tired and oh so hungry that the BYOB didn't click. But that's OK, the food was amazing so the alcohol was not necessary. Thai: Tom Yum - Spicy goodness Tom Ka Kai - So good, words can't describe Chicken Veggie Delite - Tasty just too white for me Beef Drunken Noodles - Yummy, spicy and can be eaten for breakfast, dinner, snack, you get the picture. Japanese: Philadelphia Roll - Too cream cheesy and lots of rice, I'd prefer less rice but I guess its OK for a smoked fish, if it were raw though, definitely more fish, less rice! Spicy Scallop Roll - Different, not sure if I'd order it again, a hint of fishy I must say, my dinner companion is not a raw fish type of girl so she didn't want to try any of the fancy rolls. That's why I'm going to grab my adventurous girl pal and go back for the following: The Crocodile The Frie Komodo The Butter Ocean The Rainbow No room for dessert! I recently went here for my cousin's birthday and we were in the thoughts that it was an Indian, Thai, and Sushi restaurant, but it was only Thai and Sushi. There were three of us and we ordered crab ragoon and salmon and spinach wrapped in crispy wontons. They were both flavorful and the salmon and spinach was definitely something different. We each ordered 1 Thai dish (Drunken Noodles, Red Curry w/ crispy noodles, and Basil Chiken) and 1 sushi maki (sunny crunchy, fried komodo, and shrimp tempura). The Thai dishes are yummy, but the Drunken Noodles portion was very small. The Red Curry had great flavor and went well with the noodles. The Sunny Crunchy and Shrimp Tempura Maki were delicious, but the Fried Komodo was okay. My cousin had ordered a Thai Ice Tea and it wasn't sweet so she asked for some sweetener (thinking she would get condensed milk), but instead the waitress was confused as to what to do and asked if my cousin wanted packed sugar instead. Really? The service was okay. The atmosphere was awesome but kind of tight. Definitely will work for a romantic date or just with a group of girlfriends! read more

I have constantly passed by this place and figured this would be a great place to take my mom since she LOVES Thai food. We decided to go on a day where I was sitting for a friend so we had a jogging stroller. I cant be the only one to come to a restaurant especially this one in particular with a stroller. The guy came out who I am assuming is the owner looking disgusted that we didnt want take out we wanted to actually sit down...HMMMMMM!!!! I am one to try a restaurant over and over to give it a chance and I have to say it's been a roller coaster ride for Indie Café. I do love their food but the service has much to be desired. I have never walked away unsatisfied with the food. They have a wonder full selection of food and my favorite is the sushi and there daily rolls. I have been going to the restaurant for Lunch and Dinner and even take out for quite some time for maybe five years or so and the food never disappoints. But I must admit the service is spotty when the restaurant is full the service is lacking but if you manage to go right before the dinner rush it's spot on. Take out & Delivery is spot on everything comes hot and with in 30 to 45 min of the time of order. I have lived in the Edgewater/Rogers Park area for many years and this place is one of my all time beloved eating spots. I do a delivery every month for my get togethers and all my guest love the food. So for a spot on food experience Indie rocks but for a dinner experience go early or after the dinner rush. The food at Indie is excellent, the ingredients fresh, and the space pleasant, but the service is beyond abysmal. It took us 10 minutes for our party of four to even get a menu after we were seated, and another 10 before anyone deigned to take our order -- and then, the server who took it made it pretty clear with his negative attitude and body language that he was only taking our table because nobody else wanted to. It wasn't like the place was packed; most of the tables were actually empty, but the servers seemed more interested in hanging around the sushi bar and chatting with each other than in seeing that we were taken care of. We patiently waited for our food to come out... and waited, and waited. Meanwhile, the party of two sitting directly next to us (who was clearly pals with the restaurant's employees) received one delicious-looking course after another. When we asked where our food was, our server claimed it was taking so long because they were short a chef that evening, but that didn't seem to interrupt the constant flow of food to the neighboring table. In fact, while we were asking, the woman at the table next to us said something derogatory to her server about our party, and then they both laughed at us. The food finally arrived, and while it was great, it wasn't worth the wait -- and it certainly wasn't worth being openly mocked and treated like our presence was a severe inconvenience to the staff. We won't be back; with so many other good restaurants in the neighborhood to choose from, there's no point in patronizing a place that treats customers so poorly. read more

I'm really glad that this restaurant is still open especially during the pandemic. If you're looking for some good Japanese food and some Thai food I recommend this place. Before the pandemic they do BYOB but for now they have a full bar and outdoor seating. I've been here multiple times and I love the great selection of sushi and some Thai cuisine. Today I went for dinner with a friend and I ordered the Chicken Yakisoba and California roll and both were delicious. My wife and I ordered chicken satay, crab rangoon, the trio carpaccio, and the Indie duo don and we did NOT like the tuna used for the sashimi. It was far from sushi grade, at least tonight anyway. My wife and I struggled to bite through each piece, reserved to just stripping the meat from the fibers and ligaments(?) running throughout. We pushed through the tuna as the dishes they were in were rather expensive, but we did not enjoy. The other items were good but the sushi left too much to be desired. We will try the more Thai offerings next time, if we return. We hope they correct this as we are fans of the variety of restaurants in our area and want to go back. read more

This place hits the best of all worlds. You have a choice of Sushi or Thai food. Sushi Food - not so much the standard plain sushi. So much to eat but all have a blend of different things that are not on a traditional Japanese menu. They have brought sushi to a whole new level. You might like the Veggie Tempura or the Sunny Crunchy if you like a nice sauce with your pieces. The Fiesta is particularly fiery with some jalapeño pepper - a total new concept for sushi. Thai Food - all delish. My personal favorite is the "Indie Special" with beef. Here you have a savory nut based sauce and a solid chunk of beef (kind of a roast beef) with some cashew and potatoes. On top of it is a birds nest kind of thing - a hard noodle that adds some crunch to this fantastic meal. Again, all of the Thai I have had has been on point in the restaurant. I have ordered delivery. Honesty, I don't think this kind of food transports well and I wouldn't recommend for that. Sushi should be cold. The crunch items in the Indie Special need to be eaten fresh and not delivered. This is also a BYOB if you like and there is a liquor store around the corner with some good choices. Indie does a great job of being able to do dietary changes to menu items. Delivery is always quick, and we add a delivery fee at ordering so we can have contact less delivery. Basil chicken has a lot of chicken. Veggie delight have gotten with shrimp, but got it with chicken. Also had a lovely miso soup. read more

Ordered delivery on a snowy day recently. The order was correct and on time. All my food looked pretty and was the right temp. The crab rangoon was good, a little smaller than I expected, but overall pretty tasty. I love the spicy miso soup, it always has a lot of jalapeños which I like. I ordered the shrimp tempura maki (delicious) and the Osaka maki (not so delicious). The Osaka maki is good, but the yellowtail in it tasted kind of off, it had a really fishy taste. The tuna in it was good, so I just poked out the yellowtail with my chopstick, and ate the roll with the tuna. Their coconut crunch créeme brûlée was pretty tasty and really pretty, the crust isn't breakable with a spoon, but It is still tasty. I would order from them again since they have such a diverse menu. read more

Though I concur with most posts that Indie's food is very good, I will no longer order from them because since the beginning of the year, they have raised their prices 3 times. I mean, $15 for a sushi roll?! Ridiculous. They aren't located in the Gold Coast (which, by the way, the sushi places don't charge this much). They're in a neighborhood with affordable eating -- but they no longer are. There are other Thai/Sushi restaurants I have discovered in the same area and they will get all my business. Fabulous! From the sexy ambience with the red walls and dim lighting to the delicate rangoons stuffed with real crab (no "crab stick" here folks), this place knocked my socks off. Located on a fairly inconspicuous area of Broadway just north of the Thorndale red line stop, Indie surprised me. I'd read all the raves of the crab rangoon, so instead of my usual order of edamame and miso soup, we splurged and went for the 'goons. And what a good decision that turned out to be. Perfectly sized with just the right proportion of crab, creamy, and scallion-y goodness, I was in heaven. Could've eaten two orders, but hey, I'm no glutton (hehe). An order of super-white tuna nigiri went down like butter as did the scrumptious sunny crunchy roll and the spicy blue crab roll. Next time, I'm bringing a few more peeps so I can try more of the beautifully presented maki rolls. You'd think we'd be done, but no sir, there was cheesecake on the menu and my handsome date couldn't say no. And neither could I, to some perfect, not-too-sweet green tea ice cream. Anytime I encounter an Asian restaurant dabbling in Japanese and Thai, I'm suspicious. I think, there's no way it can all be done right. But all those glowing reviews, from trusted friends no less? Let's take a chance, baby! A girl friend and I perused the menu before calling in an order for takeout. Between the curries, noodle dishes, maki, fried rice, spring rolls, fried tofu and much more, there's really something to please every palate, every craving. We went with an order of cashew chicken, Pad Thai and a spicy tuna roll. We were quoted a 15-minute wait and when we arrived, our food was professionally packaged (who likes drippy sauces all over your order?). And, some extra fortune cookies were doled out upon request, with a smile. So, the food - simply wonderful! I'd rate the Pad Thai as an A-, the cashew chicken as a B and the spicy tuna roll as a B+. Solid eatin' all around, and for super reasonable prices. $5 for a fresh spicy tuna roll? I believe they're more expensive (and much less edible) at Jewel. Bravo, Indie Cafe, Bravo. It's a dangerous game mixing cuisines from different countries -- I usually find pan-Asian restaurants end up lacking and very generic -- but Indie sure comes out on top. The sushi is INCREDIBLE. The presentation is amazing, the prices are decent, portions are good, etc. I'm a huge fan of the Popeye maki, the other special makis are all delicious too. The soup is good, and it's BYOB. Just go around the corner to the liquor store and buy some white wine and you're set! I live hella far away from this place, and yet I've managed to get over here a few times. With plans to go back.
