We love to visit Indie Cafe. our family and family friends from Thailand missed Thai and Japanese food, Indie Cafe is the place to go. The Thai dishes are real local taste but not too spicy. Many sushi choices are fresh and in a fancy decorative style. The staffs are very friendly and good services. Very reasonable prices. When weather permits, sometime we like to sit outside enjoy nice Chicago weather.We visited Indie Cafe many times during our short visit. We definitely come back again anytime we come to Chicago. I want to like this place but it has a few problems we experienced over dinner. We had a party of six on a recent weeknight. Seated inside not on sidewalk cafe. Which looked nice but loud w/ Broadway traffic. As the sun came down the lights stayed low. Not a big deal but you need the phone flashlight. Water came. Big menu options. Sushi, Thai. Curries. We had a few appetizers. The broccoli gomae, veggie egg roll, spring roll, veggie tempura, chive dumpling were ok. We ordered dinner. Sushi maki roll came out kinda quickly. Then each diner had their meal brought out in a sequence time lapse. Kinda like the chef made one at a time. The kitchen spacing was weird. Made for uneven night. Not busy at the time. So it was not a good experience made worse when my ramen finally came out last after everyone was eating and it was the wrong order I requested. It was not that good either. The whole pre boiled egg was cold sitting in an ok broth. I don't feel the mgt cared. We've gotten take out a few times and have always loved the food. We heard from reviews that their presentation is what sets them apart, so on our walk home we decided to dine in and see what the hype was about. We dined outside with our dog, but if there were more people there tonight, I could see how it would get a bit crowded. I got the salmon/tuna don (approx $24-25) and it comes with 10 FAT slices of extremely fresh sashimi. The marbling on the salmon was W O W. The presentation met my expectations with gold flakes and all sorts of leaves shaping the bowl. The sashimi was top grade, but the sushi rice wasn't flavored very well. It had too much vinegar and was a little overwhelming. Maybe next time I'll opt for the sashimi salad since I ended up leaving most of the rice. I skipped this place for years cause I thought the name was an obvious case of unintentional misplaced branding. I was right: it's not a cafe--at least in the coffee and sandwich sense--nor is it indie in the locally-sourced skinny jeans sense. But I was wrong to skip it because this is a pretty dang good Thai place with a dine-in atmosphere, good service, and thai noodles and fresh sushi that at least stand up in the top tier of Chicago thai joints (say, Opart Thai in Lincoln Park). It's not BYOB as they have their own bar. If you like beer with your spicy noodles, you're going to have to settle for a bottle. I'd recommend to them that they expand the selection a bit to include some craft beer options. Heck, Independent Spirits is right next door - ask them to pick a few you should stock. Their sidewalk outdoor seating in the summer is nice too, although it's Broadway, so expect some traffic noise. read more

Of course I got the sushi and it was melt in your mouth wonderful. The rolls are huge for the price so you definitely get what you paid for. Everything is artfully done and it's so pretty you almost don't want to eat it! My dining companion had one of the many Thai options on the menu, drunk chicken or something like that. I liked the chicken but not so much the noodles. However, I am not a Thai food fan and she said it was very good. But let me back up and tell you about the appetizer I had. I ordered the crab rangoon and OMG I loved it. they were in these cute little balls and you just pop one in your mouth and they literally melt away. Revealing a yummy goodness inside! I was sold! I'm a long-time fan and loyal customer of Indie for sushi and Thai delights. During covid, they had some quality issues, and yea I complained. I learned from a friend who manages another restaurant that most restaurants were having both staffing and supply chain issues, and this would eventually get better. After two recent delivery orders and a meal with friends at the restaurant, I am happy to report that Indie is once again firing on ALL cylinders! Correctly cooked food with correct proportions and tender meat (Cashew Chicken, Ginger Chicken, Crab Rangoon). They also have wonderful sushi offerings (various Nigiri and City Maki Roll), fresh and beautifully presented. If you haven't been to Indie lately (or ever), it's time to give them a try! I have never ever eaten so much rice in one sitting in my life!!! Now, that is saying something for this Puerto Rican Chica, you see I grew up eating rice & beans--no wonder I was a little fatty as a child :-) Trust me though I am not complaining because it was super yummy! I have no regrets about that. Just like any new experience, you can either love it, hate it, or just be so-so about it. While I cannot say that I am huge fan of sushi, I will give it another go soon. I opted for the garlic chicken dish (Thai) and I must say they do it right. The garlic is not over powering and the chicken portion is very generous, the rice portion on the other hand is humongous--holy flip! I really do love that this place is a combo of Sushi & Thai. It is nice to have options and if you ever wanted to go out with someone who justs wants sushi & you are not a sushi lover--you can have the Thai. In my book that makes this place pretty fantastic. I definitely recommend this place for groups. While it is not large, it can accommodate a group of up to 25 pretty easily. My first time at Indie Cafe won't be my last. It took all my curry courage not to order one of the Thai Curry specials, because I do love a good curry, and Indie Cafe's looked amazing on paper. But a friend and I were on a sushi/maki Mission from God, and I'm that happy we were. While Indie used to be BYOB, now they offer a nice variety of wines, a few beers (Sapporo, please!), and mixed drinks. Start with the crab rangoon, because it's the best ever. Presentation at Indie is a strong point, and the crab rangoon is done in what looks like little money bag pouches, and you can taste the excellent crab. Heavenly. I ordered the special Je T'aime Maki rolls with blue crab, avocado, crispy seaweed, and many other things. While it was very fresh and tasty, it was overshadowed by the Godzilla Baba, a complex maki with excellent colorful, sexy, presentation. It was amazing, and it's fun to say! Indie Cafe really has something for everyone with curries, rice dishes, sushi, maki, noodes and fried rice, and unique seafood specials. Back after a long absence. Still a great neighborhood place. Great sushi value for the money, and the food is well presented, fresh and delicious. Had three Maki rolls. Spicy Tuna, Spicy Blue Crab and another one - um, top of roll menu, right side, I forget the name. They were all GREAT and a nice portion size. Perfect for two to share. Rounding out dinner with a couple pieces of Toro sushi - the best. There are also LOTS of vegetarian options here, you can bring all your friends! They have drinks now, but you can still BYOB inside the restaurant, which is nice. The interior is MUCH more stylish than when they first opened, and I'm happy to see this place thriving. I'm kicking myself that I had never tried this place for sushi before today. I've stopped in and picked up some tempura and some iced thai coffee and wasn't impressed with either so I just put this place out of my head as far as going there or sushi. Today when trying to figure out where to go for a light lunch my husband and I decided to give Indie Cafe another shot. The restaurant is small but cute. All dark wood and black comfy chairs, black curtains...very chic. As soon as we were seated our glasses were filled with water...took awhile to actually get our menus tho. My husband went with the lunch special so he got fried tofu and a cucumber salad and the crazy basil fried rice. I ordered a thai iced coffee, a spicy tuna roll and a cucumber salad. Thai iced coffee was actually delish. Definitely not made the same way when I ordered it the first time I went to Indie Cafe. The cucumber salad had cucumbers, carrots, red onions, pineapple, jalapenos with a light tangy vinegarette. Very referesshing. My husbands fried tofu was pretty good as well....very meaty. I was surprised when I got my roll. Not only did I get my 6 pieces of spicy tuna but I also got three pieces of nigri and a little mound of seaweed salad. It was all so fresh and flavorful. But is also great to just order a whole bunch of maki and sushi to share as a table. They've decorated nicely, but it's not too self-conscious at all. They're not trying to be anything they're not. My Thai lunch special is probably the most basic thing on the menu (the physical menu is really cool, almost like an art swatch) so my order had a simple look to it. I had chicken pad see-ew (fun to say?) with miso soup and mini vegetable egg rolls, a well-rounded lunch though none of the choices were awe-inspiring. My friend had seaweed salad, beautifully served in a martini glass along with a cutesy paper umbrella. The salmon and spinach rolls were not bad considering I do not even like seafood. Thai and Sushi, who would have thought that this combination would work. I'm a believer and licking my chops for more. There are two rooms for dining, the gray room which is brightly lit and where the sushi-bar lives. I prefer the red room, which the light is dimmed for more of a romantic feel for dining. We ordered a few Indie specialty maki rolls. Out of the three, I loved the Volcano maki. Yum! The roll was made to perfection, all the flavors melted in my mouth and exploded with love. Yum, again! The second course was Thai Hawaiian Duck curry, it came in a large platter, the duck breast was infused in the curry and was spectacular. Don't worry if you forgot to bring drinks to dinner, Jewel is next door and Indie welcomes B.Y.O.B with no corkage fee. There are plenty of free parking on the side streets and metered parking on Broadway. I would recommend making reservations, this place fills up fast. read more

I recently attended a birthday dinner in a party of six at Indie Cafe, and the main thing that struck me was the fantastic service--from the man on the phone who took my reservation, to the host that evening, to the waitress and the bus staff. They were all pleasant, patient, efficient, and helpful. The food is still pretty good, too. I finally tried some sushi: the Bangkok roll is very good, but the Las Vegas fell a little flat. The pieces are cut too large, and the rice was a bit sticky, making for a mushy, cumbersome mouthful. I also had the Bkk Street Scallops appetizer and a seaweed salad--both very good but not quite great. I snagged several bites of the birthday girl's Veggie Delight, a simple but very tasty and satisfying dish. Based on service alone, I would consider this a strong contender for another group dinner. Always always my go-to Crocodile roll - If you love eel and spicy tuna, then this is the perfect roll for you. Sashimi - Omakase combo, trust me, it's worth it. The presentation is always jaw-dropping Food: THAI Always get the crab rangoon. It is the best in town. I'm serious. Basil chicken Drunken noodle Curry fish madness I can keep going... I don't think you could go wrong with anything I listed here. Drinks: Get some hot sake to pair with the sashimi or if you're not in the mood for sake, they have a nice wine list that complements the sushi. I am personally obsessed with their cocktails : ginger martini and mojito. Dessert: Mango sticky rice is to die for. If you like fresh sushi and good Thai food then I definitely recommend trying this place out if you're in the area. It was an unstapled staple, like it had fallen out of the stapler while someone was reloading it. I know that some places will staple containers together for delivery, but neither the pad Thai nor the crab Rangoon containers had been stapled closed. Not sure where the staple Came from. I was freaking out bc I hadn't really been paying much attention to the first 6 bites! Indie gave me a refund for my order and a $5 coupon. They came and collected the pad Thai and staple. Went there for lunch yesterday with my wife brother and mother and we left extremely disappointed. Granted it's been a while since I've been to Indie Café but it seems they have raise their prices. I will say that the main reason we keep coming back to Indie Café is that the food is good. My wife and I love the crab Ragu owns as well as the chicken basil plate. The biggest reason why am giving this establishment three stars is because yesterday after we receive the bill and I gave the waitress my credit card she came back and had included a 20% tip her self! So a $73 bill got rounded up to $93. I personally always do a 15% tip if they did modestly good job and a 20% tip if they went above and beyond. When we got inside we were greeted by super friendly hostess from Bulgaria who made us feel super welcomed! For about 10 minutes my friend and I debated whether we wanted to dine in or have a take out. After consulting with a hostess, we all shared a laugh and finally decided to dine in. Oh, I wish we did a takeout... When we were seated, the hostess passed our order to the waiter and the order was placed. During whole dinner, the server stopped by only once by the time we were almost done with the last dish, asking if needed anything else. Obviously, we did not and were ready for the check. Again, server disappeared in nowhere for another half an hour and after trying to chase him, he finally appeared and went to a table past ours. I was trying to get his attention but he stubbornly walked past us. After he took care of the other table all happy and laughing he came to us, looking like we annoyed him with our request for the check. Besides inattentive server, I must say that spicy tuna roll is excellent - it has more fillings than rice, which is always a huge plus when you order rolls. Crab Rangoons were tiny and a bit garlicy. Lastly, we ordered noodles and they tasted like they were prepared in an old pan that has some rustiness in it. Not great aftertaste. read more

The curry was bland and unpleasant. The crab rangoon were gross - just off tasting and bad. The pad thai (so hard to get wrong!) wasn't good. The sushi roll was hard and crunchy (tempura fried to death) and then was set on top of the hot food for delivery so it was warm and gross when it arrived. I can forgive one bad dish, but not 4. It came with a tiny tiny plate of cucumber salad. I am not a huge fan of Pan-Asian restaurants because something often gets compromised in flavour. When I went to Indie Cafe, it seems I got a Japanese menu only. Nevertheless, I think I came out a winner. I had the customary cup of miso soup. That was the only dish that I would claim to be "just okay." I ordered a flight of nigiri that was fresh and plentiful, albeit not enough to leave me feeling stuffed. I finished with a bowl of unagi don. Fresh barbecued eel in a sauce that was not sweet like I've had at other Pan-Asian restaurants. Thanks to nice weather, I sat outside. The seating inside didn't look crammed so diners shouldn't feel claustrophobic or like they need to talk loud because of having to compete with others sitting immediately next to them. It came with shrimp, calamari and scallops. The fish was warm, which I wasn't expecting, but it was still quite tasty. I could have stopped there and have been content with my meal, but we had also gotten Crab Rangoon; they're pretty small but really tasty. Definitely top contenders for best Crab Rangoon I've ever had! I also got the Chicago Crazy Roll. I was full, but I managed to eat the whole roll! It was very fresh and exactly what I expected. Oh, I also had some house sake and my boyfriend got some beer - only $3.50, what a steal! The atmosphere was modern, clean and nice. There were some crazy pictures on the wall, I didn't get a chance to see all of them, but they're quite unique (re creepy). The staff was attentive and friendly.
