To celebrate the end of summer school and MCAT studies, Andy, Dorothy and I wanted to meet up again and have a nice dinner. Since neither of them have tried Indochine, we decided to go for their ladies' night special on Tuesday, where they offer 4 mojitos and 4 selected food items for $40. We each started with a few different flavoured mojitos including lychee, peach, and mango. The drinks were refreshing on a hot summer's day, but they were not very strong at all. This seemed like a decent deal, but sadly, wings were not there on the menu. Indochine offers half-priced wings on Wednesdays though! The black pepper poutine ($7.50 regularly), which was topped with ground beef, black pepper gravy, cheese curds topped, and a fried egg. The gravy was pretty good, though there seemed to be little to no cheese curds. The fried egg, although pretty, did not really add value to the already saucy dish, and the fries were alright. Overall, it wasn't bad. The enoki and bacon ($5.50 regularly) caught our attention. The four pieces of slow grilled enoki mushrooms wrapped in crispy bacon were laid upon a bed of sriracha sauce, which complemented the flavours perfectly. The ends of the mushrooms were crispy, but as a whole, they were pretty chewy and hard to get through. The lemongrass chicken skewers ($7.75 regularly) looked pretty good as well. The grilled chicken thighs were tender and not chewy but not very memorable. We decided to be adventurous and order the ramen bolognese ($6.50 regularly). The noodles were of the instant variety, cooked with what is essentially tomato sauce. It somehow reminded me of Ragu, though I had not had that in years. (Maybe because of this video.) The sauce, which was not close to anything bolognese, was overly sweet and ketchupy, and the noodles were overcooked and soft. Not a winner, but it did fulfill our daily intake of carbs. We also had to get the garlic butter chicken wings ($9.50) since Dorothy had never had these nor the Phnom Penh ones. It was also Andy's first time having these, and he agreed that they were spicier than the PP ones. They were still quite fresh, just like last time, but also had a lot of MSG yet again. Overall, not a bad deal on Tuesdays, since just the food itself would have been $27.50. The drinks tasted mainly of syrup though, sadly, but four drinks for $12.75 is not bad at all. The deal would probably not be enough for four people actually, since we ordered the four dishes as well as wings for three people. There tends to be a lot of "bros" here whenever they show Canucks or UFC fights, but that's to be expected. Everyone seems to be pretty chill, and they're mostly there for the awesome wings. Indochine's garlic butter wings are basically the Phnom Penh wings without the crazy lineup. They're nice and crunchy on the outside, but super moist and juicy on the inside. Definitely worth the price! They also have a lot of daily specials, so make sure you keep an eye out for that. Wings are always good, and the wait staff have provides good service for all the times I've been. Good food + good service = 2 thumbs up. read more

This place was recommended by a friend as a "Cool vietnamese place". My first thought was a nice hot bowl of pho noodles - boy was I wrong. It's an asian fusion place with a bit of a bar/lounge feel - great for watching the game. Food: I had the butter beef carpaccio to start - this was excellent. If you dont like cilantro, try something else. The singaporean teriyaki was my main and was pretty good - a little less salt and it would have been great. Service: Came on a wednesday evening and the place was pretty empty. The server was friendly but took a while to take our orders and bring the food out. Second time eating here. Omg I couldn't believe the service or the food. I hate to do this cause I've had better past experiences here (usually it's to have drinks with friends). We decided to order drinks first. I was last to order and still couldn't decide what was good or not so I asked the server which drink is good and she said okay and walked away... Prob just misheard me but my friends heard me and I was sitting closest to the server. She did come off as really snobby too. Anyway. My gf and I ordered the beef luc lac and my other gf ordered the laksa soup also with the wings as appys. Wings were not great at all...... It was soooo dry and flavourless. I don't understand how people compare it to Phnom Penh and say it's good or decent??? Sister restaurant or not, umm .. no. The soup came within maybe 10 mins - my gf was halfway done her dish and she eats slow so we were wondering when mine and my other gfs dish were coming. By this time it has been probably half an hour which is outrageous so we told the server and she said it's coming out right now. Our 2 beef luc lac w/ tomato rice finally came and I was so excited to eat after waiting sooo long but I ended up being super disappointed because both our rice was drenched in the sauce and the sauce itself was extreeeeamly salty .... I just couldn't believe it. I tried to ignore the taste but my gf and I couldn't so we didn't even eat a quarter of it and ended up asking for the bill and leaving without tipping ( sorry but not sorry ). My first time eating at Indochine I would've given 4 stars cause I ordered the same dish and it was pretty good & good service but that was last year before I started Yelping. Went with a few friends to try the place out. We got all their wings, some spring rolls and a flurry of other items to really try out the place. Wings were ok but not due to flavour or cooking. I'm a big fan of the saucy wing (..and gfs come to think of it) and these aren't submerged in sauce like I prefer. Outside of that the wings were actually very flavourful, though I wasn't a fan of the GB wings like some of the other reviewers! Their spicy wings were actually very flavourful and my toilet and I thank you for pleasantly surprising us by not destroying us post-dinner. I think the biggest disappointment would be the seating arrangements. At the time my group went there they placed us back to back to the only other group in the space, right at the doors. This may be more efficient for the server to handle both tables but it was constant interruptions of backing into someone else or having to be aware of the poor server who was constantly in between the tight spaces between the chairs. There were lots of other tables available so it was an easily fixed solution. Overall, food was good, service was good, and seating was meh. read more

I can't legitimately continue to come back to a place and not elevate the review to 4 stars. Another quiet Saturday afternoon with a great hostess who this time suggested the pea tips, and they were amazing (and I usually hate veggies). Had the wings and mojitoes again, and they were spectacular, again. My friend loved it, and we plan to make it a regular meeting spot. No wireless sadly, and I still haven't seen what the place is like on a busy night (and probably never will), but good news, Amex acceptance is on the way! read more

I heard that this place is a sister restaurant of Phnom Penh and I had to check it out. I like Phnom Penh, but I hate to line up. The menu is much smaller than Phnom Penh, but they have my favourite plates: butter beef and chicken wings! They taste the same too. No beating around the bush, I wanted to order the same items available from PP to do a comparison, and I started with the Beef Luc Lac [aka Vietnamese Shaking Beef] with Tomato Fried Rice $12. Unlike the version at PP where it is saucier and comes with a fried egg, this is a "cleaner" version with tomato fried rice. What a comfort food, reminded me of when my uncle first made me ketchup fried rice and I LOVED it. Try it. Thank me later. A very generous portion of tender chunks of beef in a slightly tangy vinegary like sauce alongside a fresh albeit boring salad rounded this out. Butter Beef Carpaccio - I can't recall the price for it at PP, but it looks to be a tad bigger for the portion. Garlic Butter Chicken Wing - These came out steaming hot, and also included more fried bits of garlic, onion, peppers. Even more incentive to come to Indochine? Half price wings on Wednesdays! The two wednesdays I've gone it was busy, but there was no waiting for a table. I must advise that the crowd that frequents this place at nights would be similar to those you may see at say, Fabric on a Friday night. If you know what I mean. I was attending a private event at this location so really had no expectations and hadn't even heard about this place. Upon arrival I was a bit taken back by the dark room atmosphere which resembles a sports bar more than a nice place to eat. The staff were really friendly and mixed me a virgin Mojito which was full of lychee and really memorable drink. The echo in the room is crazy so it made it feel much busier than it actually was. In the back they had setup a table of food which I took the liberty of dabbling in; the Mango and Avocado salad garnished with sliced almonds left a sweet taste in my mouth so I went for seconds even for a self proclaimed meatatarian. Next I tried the Pork skewers very juicy and succulent where a peanut butter completed the texture nicely. Last but not my most favourite were the honey garlic chicken wings decorated with sesame seeds. The wings were cooked to perfection with juicy meat and the sauce was not overpowering even though made mingling after chowing down on them a bit more awkward...garlic breath all the way! The food is excellent and always consistent. The best wings in the city! There's not much in the menu I don't like. This has to be one of my favourite places to get comfort food. Unfortunately, there are 2 issues I have with the place itself: 1. Inconsistent service. I've been coming here since they opened and the service used to ALWAYS be great. Efficient, attentive, genuinely friendly, and fast (or at least, communicative if running behind which customers appreciate!) The last few years has seen a turnover in staff and not really for the better. 2. It's often ridiculously loud in there - I suppose it's a great atmosphere when they show games (it doubles as a sports bar) but when there aren't any games to show on screen, the music is LOUD. Indochine offers a great variety of south east Asian inspired dishes that scream "eat me"! The chicken wings here were definitely tasty and the beef luc lac was super flavourful (plus you can add a fried egg - bonus!). The only disconnect here is that this place looks like a random dive bar. Their interior is super dark with a lot of screens for your viewing pleasure. Though don't let this deter you from trying the food here. It's not bad at all and it's a nice joint to just chill and have a beer. read more

The menu at Indochine Kitchen offers much choice. All the staff are friendly and helpful. The service is attentive. The draught beer list is diversified. food delivered looks better than it tastes. Green Papaya salad was listed as a spicy hot (red pepper icon) offering but the papaya lacked flavour and the spiciness relied on a generous portion of fresh basis. Salad comes with a choice of crispy tofu or shredded beer and the crispy tofu was over sauteed but the beef, however, was a better choice. Too early to know if it gets too noisy. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us because we love Phnom Penh so much but this place isn't like Phnom Penh at all. They do sell some of the same dishes but we felt that out favourite dishes like butter beef, chicken wing and beef luc lac were better at Phnom Penh. We did try some dishes specific to Indochine but weren't really impressed. The atmosphere also turned me off. The music was quite loud and it was more of like a night club feel. I think the moral of this story is if you like Phnom Penh just go there and skip Indochine. I don't drink but this placed seemed like people may like it better if they had a few beers. read more

Indochine's garlic butter chicken wings are what draws me here time and again. I really do think they're the best wings in the city - even better than Phnom Penh. Phnom Penh's have a crispier texture but Indochine really piles on the yummy garlic and chili peppers. And seriously, after I'm done my wings, I always end up picking on those toppings that fell off. The rest of their menu is ok and, truthfully, forgettable. The drinks are good. I've had their Caesars, mojitos and high balls. Their Caesars are spicy and refreshing. Love the olives that come with. Hint: If you ask for their Caesars to be all olives, they'll accommodate for you! The service is fine. Never have to wait too long to be served or to get the bill. Everyone is friendly and if it's not too busy they'll all chat with you a bit. They are all really pretty ladies too if you'd like some nice eye candy to go along with your wings and drinks. The place is hit and miss with the crowds. Sometimes we'll only be able to sit at the bar. Worst dinner experience ever. I went to this restaurant for a friends BDAY dinner. 8 of us in total. The night started as expected get seated and ordered drinks. My Gf ordered a viet iced coffee which never came after inquiring the waitress*( katelina or something) said she made the drink wrong and was making another one but after 50 minutes it never came and we ended up cancelling it.. The server tried to bring here a complimentary beer to make up for that but why would you bring a beer instead of coffee it just doesnt make sense . She didnt even ask if she wanted a different type of drink. The other people in group had issues as well but they write their own reviews The second item was when ordered our food I noticed the server was not writing down anything. I ordered 3 items wings, fried rice and crispy tofu shouldnt have been that hard to remember. I ended up getting a papaya salad and wings to start. When she brought the salad I told her I didnt order this and she told me I did. I accpeted the salad because I was hungry at that point. the wings were ok nothing special. and the tofu came 30 minutes later and when I asked for my fried riceshe said she punchedit but the kitchen was backed up but it wasnt really that busy in there. I ended up cancelling the rice because to so damn long.The food itself was OK it was the stupity of the server in serving I couldnt handle. 1. Cheap drinks!!! Great choice for a pre-going out venue. They also have a stack of board games for intoxicated (or not) entertainment purposes. The restaurant is a trendier version of Phnom Penh (they have the same owners ... I believe? feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Chicken wings are a must order. The salty/tangy dipping sauce is unbelievably addictive. Double thumbs up for the Butter Beef. I would also recommend the Beef Luc Lac with tomato rice. There is a bit of a wait for the food and drinks, but it's not a huge problem if you're socializing with friends. I wouldn't come here if you're looking for a quick dining experience. This is the pinnacle of fine dining butter beef and high-end Wings Wednesdays. I have not deviated at all from the beef carpaccio, butter beef, and kickass wings because it is top-notch. Look no further. During game and wing nights, karaoke, and Thirsty Thursdays, the restaurant gets louder than my mum (quite an accomplishment!) but most Mondays and Tuesdays are low-key enough to enjoy a quieter meal. read more

Had no idea the Three Lions was closing. Being a Brit, they had some of the best comforts of home I could've asked for, Walked down the other day since it had been many months since we'd stopped in. I honestly can't believe I never noticed it had closed and opened as something else. I drive by it daily. Decided we'd try this new place out. We managed to get a seat though it was slowly getting busier and louder. It seems like such an odd location for the type of restaurant that it is. On top of that, the lighting is a bit off and the scantily clad waitresses were making the both of us a little uncomfortable. Giant TVs surrounding you is a little disconcerting as well. I will say the food we had was good. We were recommended the chicken wings and were not disappointed. Cocktails were decently priced. Man it was tasty. We had chicken wings, butter beef carpaccio, and beef luc lac. Yup, would go again.

"Indochine garlic butter chicken wings". Spicy chicken wings with garlic chips and lemon pepper dipping salts. Comparing these wings to the ones at "Phnom Penh": it came with the same chili and green onion sprinkled on top, and the same side of salt. I can't take heat in my food, but this I found great. The pieces were meaty and the skin crispy. A great set of wings, good enough to order a refill. And we did. However I did not find them enough alike to the ones at "Phnom Penh" to conclude that they indeed share the same menu or chef. Though they do also have "butter beef carpaccio" on their menu. "Singaporean Laksa". Rice vermicelli noodles in a spicy seafood coconut curry broth. With shrimp, tofu puffs, bean sprouts, fish balls, fish slices, and a sliced hard boiled egg. If you have read any of my previous south East Asian restaurant posts, you know I am a sucker for laksa and have to order it given a chance on any menu. This bowl that I was having at "Indochine" was one of the spicest ones I have had in Vancouver. (I never ask to adjust spice levels when ordering.) Though despite it being spicer than what I am use to, I love the stuff and ate it all anyways. Would I come back? - absolutely. This is my kind of food. You bring all the best elements from all cuisines and you combine it all together for a great remix. Like a Japanese style baked oyster with very American cheese. Or Japanese ramen in a minced beef and cream cheese sauce reminiscent of Italian cuisine. And sides like garlic and French bread offered along side rice and shrimp crackers. It all sounds a little weird and a lot unfamiliar, but I can't wait to come back and try them all. Would I recommended it? - For those familiar with Asian style cuisine this is a must try. Familiar flavours joining new ones for a great taste experience. It is like hearing a sample of an old song you use to listen in a new one you now like. The location is easy to drive to with plenty of parking and bus routes going past in front. PP has already set the bar high, but Indochine was offering a few of the favorites from PP (butter beef, wings), so I figured at least we could get those items and try out some new things. I've read some comments that they're the same, and oh nooooo, they really aren't. Food - overall: not bad. Does it measure up to PP? Oh no. The butter beef was sliced a hairline thicker, so its a bit chewier, whereas the PP one is a bit thinner, and noticeably tangier. The wings - fresh, tasty, not bad, though I think the PP one is better value for money ($7 for a half order is bigger than this $10 one). Its not the same PP wings, but still good. Wednesday Wing deals is probably when I'd say its worth it to come back for these. Beef luc lac - definitely not the same as PP. They had chunks of beef in sauce which tasted like black pepper beef. It came with tomato rice, which tasted nice but good god, the texture was SO dense. I know it was pressed into a bowl, but none of the rice came apart, we had to cut through it, and it was like eating congealed oatmeal. Other new items we tried was the braised pork shoulder and Vietnamese curry. Both were pretty good, meats were tender, though I think the curry needed a bit more flavor. I shouldn't be comparing, because they are different restaurants, but if they are offering the same items, I'm gonna compare. On the upside, the food is a bit cheaper, and to match a bit smaller, so its easier on the wallet to share items with 2-3 people. Aside from the food, I really didn't like the resto atmosphere. Loud music, dark, shiny silver walls, super warm (needed to crank up the AC!), girls in super skimpy clothes - it felt like I was in a night club, seemed to cater to the 20-something age range. Once I walked in, I wanted to walk back out but the girl was quick on offering us a table. It was really empty for a Saturday night. 4 tables. They mix flavours together for a mouth watering experiencing, if you like a little heat come here. Try the garlic butter wings. Everything is reasonable priced and cheap beers on Thursdays. We had lunch there for the first time yesterday and we were one of only two tables in the restaurant. We had several appetizers. The problem started with them only having a half hour order of spring rolls available due to a party the night before. The second problem was that the edamame is obviously pre Frozen and was not high quality because of that. The third problem was that when my meal came there was a long grey hair coming out of the chicken. At first I thought it was a chicken hair that you sometimes see on skin but it was way too long and grey. When I sent it back to the kitchen the waitress told the cook and he proceeded to dispute it very loudly for what seemed like 5 minutes. I asked her to just bring me the rice and the Egg and the salad and get rid of the chicken. When the bill came they had charged me for rice and egg and a side salad. I was really disappointed that there were so many issues as I was looking forward to trying this restaurant. I will not go back especially because of the cook yelling about the hair and the extremely slow service. If a restaurant makes so many mistakes and a hair is in the chicken you would think they wouldn't charge you for a little bit of rice and an egg. Place wasn't that full on a Wednesday night but service, while friendly, ground to a halt after my beer. With the recommendation from a friend, I went to Indochine to celebrate my birthday as they aren't as full as their counterpart in Chinatown, Phnom Penh. He assured me that they had similar menus and I would get the chicken wings I love so much. During my birthday, I experienced the worst service I've ever had - ever. I'm not one to complain about the service at restaurants because I have also been a server, but the service was totally below my expectations. Upon arriving, we weren't greeted by anyone until having been seated for 10 minutes. We weren't given menus until we asked for them approximately 30 minutes into our reservation. There was a $10.00 cake fee for having them refrigerate my cake, bring my cake out, then have no plates, forks, and a knife to serve (we had to ask for all of that after they brought out the cake). The servers (there were 3 helping our table of 15), started tabs under each person's name, mixed up the orders, names, and this made it very difficult to split the bills. Our table was ignored in the process of ordering (they would take an order here and there and walk off) and we were not checked up on to ask about how our food was. Since they did not come to check on us, half the table started eating well before the other half received their food. We wanted to order more drinks, but we needed to flag them down. The disappointing part in all of this was that they weren't very busy. We saw the servers on their phones at the side of the POS machine and behind the bar. We started my birthday at 8pm and because of the delay with service and paying for our bills, we finally finished and had everything paid for just before 11pm. The chicken wings were still so good, but that service leaves such an awful taste in my mouth. 18% gratuity is totally something my group and I should have fought not to pay for. Since they knew they were automatically given this tip, it felt like they were definitely neglecting us. I would NEVER recommend or even eat here again.
