Just got home from my first visit to Indochine and now I'm sitting on my couch, warmed up and full of Pho, to write my first online restaurant review. My girlfriend works around the corner from this little spot on Spring Street and has been suggesting we try it since it opened. She noticed a great deal,Two Pho One Tuesdays--which is just what it sounds like, and we bundled up and went to check it out. I've never had Pho before so I can't compare it to anything else but Indochine was absolutely delicious. It's small but cozy and complaints of it being a bit drafty are well founded (if you get a chill go to the bathroom--it's toasty). We settled in and I ordered the Ca Phe Phin Sua Nong, coffee with condensed milk, which could have been hotter but was very good. Next up were the chicken egg rolls, Chicken Cha Gio. They were hot, fresh and tasty. The lettuce and mint were crisp and the dipping sauce was sublime. For our main course we went for Pho--my girlfriend ordered the Pho Tai Chin, beef broth with rice noodles, rare steak and beef brisket while I went with Pho Tai Bo Vien, beef broth with rice noodles, rare steak and beef meatballs. We added healthy spoonfuls of Siracha, lime, mint, bean sprouts and jalapenos and dug in. Delicious. Everything was fresh, the meat was tender and the broth--well, the I would have been happy with just the broth. As I said, this is my first time writing a review for a restaurant online and I am doing so because I truly enjoyed this little gem and want to get the word out. Reviewing this so highly as a great lunch place is bittersweet, because I want their business to thrive, but simultaneously, I want to be able to go in and sit down at lunchtime! A small, cozy place with a super-friendly staff! I agree with everyone who's said that it's wonderful, but difficult to get a seat during the lunchtime rush. Takeout is a fantastic option; call ahead about 10 minutes before your lunch break and by the time you walk over, it will be ready for you! Highest recommendation here, though? Try the Vietnamese Iced Coffee if you're having "one of those days." I call it my crack coffee that I absolutely NEED to get through a paper every now and then! read more

I've been here a few times, and they have been my only times trying Vietnamese food, so I can't really compare it to anything. I usually get the beef (haven't gotten too adventurous yet), and can't help feeling that the portion size is a little small for the price and that the meat isn't as flavorful as it should be. Not that it's bad or anything, but there's just not much oomph to it. Of course, I haven't tried enough Vietnamese food to really judge it; I'm just going by my standards of other Asian foods. Went here on a rainy Friday afternoon. I was hesitant about leaving my good umbrella in the bucket outside the door, so i brought it in with me. (Making sure I didn't drip water all over the floor) I wasn't in the door 2 minutes when the person behind the counter informed me that I needed to leave my unbrella outside. I reluctantly walked back out to put it in the bucket. After that, she made quite the scene with a mop getting the 1 or 2 drops of water from the floor. Ok, safely made it in. We (my viet BF and I) were the only people in the place. Thought it was odd, but more for us! We started with the pork eggrolls. They were really good, and hot as lava, with a nice and flaky wrapper. For dinner, I had the Pho Tai. The BF had Bun Bo Hue. I throughly enjoyed mine and he did his as well, although it will never live it to his grandfathers (does anything live up to family cooked food?!) This is the place that's gotten me hooked onto Pho. I first came here in the Fall of 2013, and I make it a point to eat here at least once a month (and usually more!). It's a great place to casually have lunch or dinner with a friend. Honestly, absolutely everything I've eaten from this place has been very good, and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it. I do not know enough about Pho to have nuanced opinions, I also have not tried Pho in a lot of places, but I know that I love Pho, so I always love going to Indochine. I go as frequently as my student budget allows. Also, the Vegetarian Pho is actually made with Vegetable broth, which can be hard to come by at some pho restaurants. It is BYOB, which is a nice. I'v been here a couple of times. Every time I come in I order a different pho. I've had the chicken pho and the pho chay (vegetarian dish). Love the subtle flavors and the freshness in the food. Feel a lot healthier when I walk out of the place. The reason I rated it only 4 stars is because they have very limited starter options. You would most probably end up taking a plate of spring rolls. The rolls are served cold (or room temperature). Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be served. But because of this, it becomes less appetizing. i finally tried indochine for dinner and am sad that i waited this long! the restaurant is very clean and bright with lots of seating, and i like the chalkboard menu in addition to the regular versions. the menu itself is simple, with a number of pho dishes, vermicelli dishes, rice plates, banh mi, or a few specials from the chef. i ordered the bum tom nuang which was the vermicelli noodle dish topped with shrimp, and added a fried egg. the egg is definitely worth it and should be added to any dish for which it is offered! i appreciated the larger shrimp and plenty of the vegetables added. read more

Came here on the advice of a friend while i was in town visiting. The place is pretty spacious and clean. Ordered the spring rolls and pho. Spring rolls were fresh, and coupled with the peanut(?) sauce, made a great opening act of my lunch. Next was the pho. The broth was clean and light, and not very oily. The noodles and meat tasted fine to me, and the accompanying things (i cant remember their names) that you put into the pho were all fresh. I would go back, but then again, that would mean i have to go NJ again, and i'm not sure if thats going to happen again anytime soon (sorry NJ'ers). read more

Unfortunately, this is the only place to get pho around Rutgers. At 9? ish dollars a bowl, you get a bowl of plain broth, rice noodles, and already cooked beef. It makes me really upset to see my meat already cooked by the time I get it and have it super hard and tough by the time I eat it. The meat in real pho should be pink and eventually brown in the broth. However, that is not the case here. I usually squeeze the lime into the broth so I could actually taste some flavor. Service kind of sucks. There's only one waitress doing everything...poor girl. And the spring rolls are ok. Nothing blowing me out of the water. Meh.... Came here last night for takeout as I loveeeee Pho, and wanted to find some in the area I was staying in. Being a vegetarian I ordered the vegetarian pho which had such a strange tasting broth- I couldn't put my finger on exactly what it was like, either ginger or think of a butternut squash taste. I've only been here once and I enjoyed myself. The staff was nice and the food was good. I didn't love my dish but it was more because it wasn't what I was expecting; it was good for what it was. I ate at this place for probably the 4th or 5th time tonight, previous visits were all decent enough. But I have always gotten the sense that the wait staff isn't too happy about large groups coming in. And each time I've gone in there, that's the story, 10-20 or so friends in a large group. We get loud, it's natural. To be honest, I'm not a fan of this, but the place is hollow and echos badly(not our fault). After obnoxiously "one upping" my loud friends at the other end of the table, partly as a joke, partly to get them to queit down, I noticed that there was a table of 3 people in the restaurant aside from our group. I hadn't noticed before my ridiculous outburst. And truly, I wouldn't have taken it to that level if I had noticed them there at that point in the evening. So, I got up to apologize to them, and surely I owed it to them. They weren't accepting the apology at all, and as I attempted to express my regret for being a jackass, one of the two wait staff people came over and told me to go back to my seat. I proceeded to attempt an apology to the wait staff for my behavior and that of my friends(including one guy who helped himself to a glass from an area that was not closed off but clearly not his place to go). This was met with anger and resistance, and a scolding for mentioning that I witnessed her displeasure at him doing this. Food isn't bad, but not good either. I was not drunk, not being belligerent, only apologetic. They talked over me, and presumed to tell me I should not bring up having seen her being upset about him helping himself to the glass. This is something that a reasonable person wouldn't get too bent out of shape about. They just didn't want to let me speak. I did not use foul language, I did not raise my voice. I can not say the same for these two people, one of them raised her voice and starting wagging her finger around like a religious zealot. It was clear that they just can't handle large groups in their restaurant and were annoyed at dealing with us, even though we go in there 1 or 2 times a month for the past couple of yrs. So, having been scolded by now both of the wait staff while attempting to apologize to them and not being allowed to complete a full sentence about any of it. I told them, "there is no understanding here". I left money for my meal on the table and left my friends to deal with them. I've never walked out of a restaurant before. Most people are reasonable and are willing to accept apologies, not this place. The staff has never been that friendly at all, never witnessed them smile once. And they have forgotten the most basic thing, they are serving a customer, even if the customer get too loud. If someone wants to apologize you let them say their peace, not scold them. Won't be surprised when this rinky-dink excuse for a restaurant goes out of business within 2yrs. read more

Normally when I get Vietnamese food, I will only get pho. I start off with the fried rolls that were pretty good. The Pho was average for my taste. If you go down Route 1 or Route 27, there are a few pho restaurants that are a little more authentic. If I didn't have a car, this place would be a reasonable place to go to. Delicious vegetarian food, fresh veggies, and cheap - what more could you ask for? Some of my favorite items are the vegetarian bun, vegetarian pho, spring rolls and Thai iced tea. What I really love is that you can ACTUALLY get vegetarian pho - made with veggie broth, not beef broth. Also, the staff here is incredibly friendly and attentive. This is the Vietnamese go-to spot in New Brunswick. Pho is solid, as is their thai tea and vietnamese coffee. Pros: - pho broth, noodles, and add-ins all delicious - super fast and attentive service - reasonable prices - surprisingly nice ambience and decor. - very clean - plastic, reusable chopsticks - they bring you water with lime without you even asking. Unheard of in an Asian restaurant Cons: - Like most Asian places, they aren't very friendly - There's not a lot of meat in the pho. At any other pho place I struggle to finish the meat. - Recently they've been weird with closing at certain times. I guess they're renovating or something. Pretty good pho, but mediocre vermicelli bowls. I got the Bun Cha Gio Tom Thit Nuong. There's way too large a ratio of noodles to vegetables/meat, and they don't give you enough fish sauce to cover the massive amounts of noodles they give you, so a lot of the dish just ends up being dry, plain vermicelli noodles. There were also only two shrimp?? The shrimp and pork themselves are under seasoned and very dry; I tend to expect juicy pork with my bun bowls and this was a major disappointment. I could eat Indochine's pho ga every day in the autumn/winter, it is THAT good. The pho ga is a noodle soup with chicken, when you get it for take-out it is a container of delicious broth with the chicken on the side. They also include a bag with bean sprouts, Asian basil, lime, and jalapeno, SO good. The flavors blend perfectly, and because it's all on the side you can add as little or as much as you want to your pho. It's very filling, and definitely hits the spot on a cold, rainy day. They have moved from their smaller location to their larger location on George Street not too long ago, so seating should not be a problem. Always received friendly service from the staff, and Tuesdays are "Two Pho Tuesdays", buy one pho, get one free. I was wanting to try this place out for a long time since it's one of the very few Vietnamese restaurants in the area. That said, the food was only okay. I ordered the pho and it was too heavy on the star anise, which hindered my enjoyment of the noodle soup. Too bad, I will have to find another place to satisfy my pho cravings.
