I had lunch here today for the first time. Staff was excellent, nice and quick! Food was absolutely flavorless. I had the chicken egg rolls for an app- texture was great but had no flavor- even the fish sauce was watered down. Had beef pho for my meal and broth was absolutely flavorless. I also was supposed to get tendon, brisket, tripe and rare steak meat. No steak meat or tendon! C'mon.... I am spoiled I guess because I live near Saigon restaurant in So. Plainfield and that broth is brimming with beef flavor, star anise etc... and the broth leaves a slick of fatiness on your lips..... SO Good. Indchine-SO bad. Don't waste your time. Nice little Vietnamese spot on George St. Nice spread on the menu. I ordered the rice dish with sautéed chicken and carrots and peas. Chicken was tender, seasoned just right, and tasty. The only downside to this dish was the portion. For almost $10, I literally had 8 "French fry" sized tenderloins, with a fist sized portion of rice. I don't know if this a normal portion here, or the kitchen screwed me. The lychee drink was refreshing with whole pieces of lychees. I will give this place one more shot next time I'm in the area and I'll go with either the banh mi sandwich or pho. read more

I've had my fair share of Pho, and I must say that the broth of the Pho at Indochine is the best I've ever had. But the dish that you gotta go there to get is their Chicken Meatball Banh Mi. This Banh Mi is my favorite thing to eat here. Try it with a Coconut Juice, and you'll have a great meal with a kaleidoscope of flavors dancing on your pallet! read more

It's good, but it's no Pho Le! (Red Bank, NJ). Enjoyed the lunch special, I had a beef noodle bowl. I came in on a FREEZING day, so it hit the spot. I found it funny that a lot of the customers, many of whom were college students, didn't know what to do with the fish sauce / sprouts / basil that came with their meals. It was rather busy when I came in, and the waitress seemed in a rush to get our order... this was annoying, but I acknowledge this might not always be the case here. The service was great, but the noodles were not very flavorful and a bit on the pricey side. I've traveled to Vietnam and even their simple noodles were bursting with flavor with fewer ingredients than at this place. They were certainly edible, but nothing to write home about, so to speak. Finally found a place with Banh Mi! I got the tofu version and my other half, the half that eats meat, got the traditional pork sandwich. I estimated 27 kinds of pork in it but he was delighted with the mix. I really liked the tofu hoagie except for a couple little things: 1. I despise mayo and it has no business being in my banh mi. I know it's common but I hate it. Easy fix though, I just didn't know it came in it. 2. Overall, it could use more... everything. I liked the jicama but maybe in addition to daikon, not in place of it. I prefer more cilantro and jalapeno. I also got the spring rolls with peanut sauce. I pretty much licked the cup when I was done with the sauce. This place is really, really tiny. I think there were 12 seats in all. It's the kind of place where you and your dining companion's knees touch. So if you want an awkward work lunch, go for it! I'll definitely go back b/c I have to try the pho. New Brunswick food automatically gets one extra star from me b/c if it's edible I'm pretty blown away. So keep in mind the one star handicap. - - - - - - - - Update. Went back. Got the same thing. Really great place. Love the fresh summer rolls. The Bahn Mi sandwiches are spicy and very tasty. The service is very friendly and work hard to get the food to you and are very nice. The pho was hot and good. It might have needed a couple more fresh items to toss in the bowl. Who knew a college town would have a nice Vietnamese place. Stopped by during lunch hour from jury duty. Friendly staff and excellent food! Pho Tai noodle soup ($8.25) was fresh with delicious and clear broth. Generous portion of beef as well. The Thai Ice Tea ($2.50) was super refreshing! Definitely recommend Indochine if you are in the area! read more

Ordered brisket and rare steak pho and grilled chicken sandwich for delivery. They package the broth, meat, noodles, veggies, and sauces separate and it's actually really fun putting it all together! Also ensures quality. It was so delicious. And I ate the sandwich the next day, reheated in a toaster oven and it reheated so we'll and that was also so delicious. I love the pickles veggies. A great place that would work well for lunch or dinner. I was here for dinner. Place wasn't very busy, and there were several solo diners eating here. So, getting a table wasn't a problem. Service was great, and the food was a very nice find. Between us, we ordered a Pho option, and a Chicken Curry Dish. Both were very good, and a great size for dinner, especially for the price. With the amount spent at other restaurants in the area during this travel week, it was nice to find a great food option at a lower cost. The inside of the place is not stellar decor - but it's ok. And, I would much prefer to pay for the food instead of the ambiance. There are several vegan options (I'm not a vegan fan, but if you are, this place would still work for you). Appetizer options are limited, but the prices of everything else are low enough where group ordering some of the entrees to share would work just fine. read more

Indochine has tasty Vietnamese food for great prices, perfect for a college student with a pocket change budget and a reliance on University buses. It is a teeny tiny place with bright colors, and a happy atmosphere complemented our friendly host. (It has moved now to an even more accessible location and is still super yummy.) We started with A4, the Fresh Spring Rolls with shrimp and pork. While they could have used some chives or some other herb usually present in other Vietnamese spring rolls, they were a delicious start to the meal. The accompanying peanut sauce was great. I had B2, the Vermicelli rice noodles with grilled pork. I personally thought it was delicious and ate the whole thing. My roommate, and partner in this dining adventure, had B5, the Vermicelli rice noodles with grilled chicken & shrimp. She thought the noodles could have been cooked a little longer. Additionally the dish needed more cilantro and the sauce was a little salty. Both are statements with which I agree. Please note, however, that she has had more experience with Vietnamese food than me. We look forward to going back to taste some of their other exciting specials and Banh Mi. When I discovered Indochine's opening in New Brunswick, just minutes from where I live, I was thrilled to finally find a Vietnamese restaurant in New Jersey that serves Banh Mi! I chose the grilled pork banh mi that was a very good, small dinner/adequate lunch sandwich. Of course, the traditionalist would have chosen the "authentic" version offered with pork roll, ham and pate, but for me, the grilled pork was a great choice. The meat was cooked well, with a spice blend that fit perfectly with the traditionally pickled vegetable toppings along with a spiced mayo and crispy baguette - this is pretty damn close to vietnamese heaven in a sandwich. And for only $6.25, this sandwich is a pretty good deal. We had the combo with "seasoned fries", which were great. The other items we ordered were the pork egg rolls, which were okay- pretty standard Vietnamese fare if you were to order at most of nearby Edison's Vietnamese eateries- and for dessert, the apple fritters. I highly recommend the fritters (with a scoop of ice cream, obviously) for their combination of sweet apples with cinnamon, crispy, flaky egg-roll pastry shell, and smooth ice cream. Just be careful because you'll want to eat the fritters before they are actually cool enough to swallow without wolfing down ice cream with every bite! All in all, a great meal and a definite place earned on my frequently visited takeout options. After getting caught in a rainstorm, a reasonably big bowl of warm everything-pho was just what the doctor ordered. On the other hand, there probably wasn't anything especially pho-like about said bowl of meat, noodles, and meat-like stuff thrown into soup. There was a side dish of sprouts, lime, and greens but even with them all thrown in, it still lacked the weird uber-fresh remind-me-of-hot-weather quality to pho that, for instance, makes cilantro acceptable, or even welcome... Maybe I was doing it wrong (been known to happen), or my concept of pho is completely off, but given other reviews I'm okay with my stance that it was a really good bowl of meat and noodle soup, but missing something pho-esque. Shrug? Note: As of this writing the current location on George Street where Bombay Bistro used to be is a definite upgrade from the hole-in-the-wall on Spring behind Court Tavern that I guess a lot of the earlier reviews are talking about. As other reviewers have mentioned, they do seem to skimp a little on the meat, but that may just be the typical overeating American in me. Service can be hit-or-miss. I feel like there are times when I visit and the place is empty and service is prompt and warm, and other times when it's fairly crowded and the service can be a bit brisk.
