We couldn't be happier with the results. Both our dogs are large breed. We contacted Nate a couple years ago when our youngest, a french mastiff, american bulldog mix, approached adulthood and showed aggression towards other dogs. The dog is a total love bug but considering his size and strength, we couldn't risk any anti social behavior. After a few sessions in our home focusing on basic obedience and leash training, I began taking our dog to Nate's group classes. After a few of those, our dog was comfortably lying down surrounded by 14 strange dogs!! Incredible!!! We recently added a third rescue to the family. The introduction did not go well at all. It was a disaster. We called Nate again. He furthered the training on our first two with crate training and in a short time, he had all three walking together, calm and behaved. Here's the bottom line. Yes, Nate is a fantastic dog trainer but more importantly, he trained us to know how to understand and work with our dogs. It was very easy to let our dogs go untrained since they are such sweethearts with us. Now they are pets that we can take other places and not worry about them around people and other dogs. We know how to handle them. That takes so much stress away. We can walk them together, they are calm and happy. That makes everyone happy. I cannot over recommend Nate. Nate was referred to me by my good friend/groomer and she was 100% correct in what she said. Being that she was familiar with the different trainers in this area, she told me he would be the only trainer she would trust with her puppies. I called Nate and we scheduled an in-home evaluation. Nate arrived on time and was extremely professional. He met with us first and asked relevant questions regarding our rescued puppy. Although he was speaking with us, he was also making observations about our puppy to help him see what type of training would be needed. Since we were going out of town, we decided to board/train Loki at his house. He picked our puppy up as scheduled and kept us updated while we were gone. When he brought Loki back home, we noticed immediately what an excellent job Nate had done. The first thing he showed us was Loki learned the proper way to come in/go out. He had him sit by the door and wait till we gave him the command. That by itself was extremely impressive; however, it was just the beginning. He had Loki "go to spot" and Loki remained there until he was released. This was on top of the other basic obedience skills such as sit, down, etc. Nate came back to our home to continue training us, as well as Loki. What I appreciate is that Nate is willing to point out what we are doing wrong and how to correct the situation. I have already referred our neighbor to him and Nate is currently training their rescued pup. I will also be sending Loki back to him for his off-leash training. I'm positive once that training is completed, our puppy will be the talk of the neighborhood based on how well he is trained. I don't know how I can express enough how great Nate is and his training. My son and daughter in law and I each got a new puppy back in June. Nate took them both in and they received excellent training. They are not even 7 months old yet and listen perfectly to the commands Nate taught them and shared with his. He spent many many hours training them and really spent a good deal of time with us on multiple occasions to teach us what we needed to do to continue the great behavior. Nate seems great, but he takes your money and runs. We paid 50% plus additional for leashes and collars up front, then after 4 in home classes he asked for the rest even though we hadn't come close to finishing our training. We foolishly paid, he cancelled our next class due to weather, then disappeared and we never heard from him again. He had a family issue which I completely respected and understood. About 90 days later I contacted him to check in and he said he had my contact info mixed up with another customer. He came by one other time and I have not seen Nate since. Like the others I have lost my deposit and all I have to show is a training collar which is now too small and a leather leash. Nate was recommended by the vet for my three rescue puppies. He came to the house, did an assessment, and let us know the training would be approx $2,500 for the three dogs. Seemed steep but we agreed. For the first appointment Nate was late. 15 minutes past the appointment time I texted Nate and said let's reschedule. He said he was on his way but he apparently was not close. Then he arrived on time a couple of times. He walked each dog on leash in the house for 10 to 15 mins, then we scheduled the next appointment. Then Nate missed an appointment completely. This prompted me to let him know that I would not continue his services if he could not be reliable. Next he came on time, then he was late again, then he was earlier than the appointment window. We finally discontinued the service. We paid half up front and he did not offer a refund. The dogs learned nothing. I'm not saying they would not have learned if we went through the whole program. But up until then they had not learned anything useful and we paid over $1,000. Nate seems like a decent, smart guy. He knows dogs and he's good with them. But in my experience he is just not professional. If you hire Nate, I recommend paying as you go. Do not pay 50% up front. You are likely to lose the money and have nothing to show for it. Anybody who has met me or my Husband know that we have a soft spot for pups. So when I met Nathan it was like a prayer answered. We have two large (at the time un-socialized) pups. Both fearsome in appearance and quite formidable If provoked but gentle giants in nature. Where we procured Nathan's assistance is when we took in a older dog (who has sadly left this earthly plain). My two un-socialized pups became super aggressive and it worried both my husband and I, we did not want any of our pups to get hurt or to hurt anybody else. Calling Nathan and his team to help with behavioral issues was a no brainer. Though hard to part with for a few weeks Nathan did a phenomenal job conditioning my first two pups, essentially creating a safe environment for them to learn and grow. I was referred to Nate through a mutual friend. I have 2 dogs, a lab and a pitbull around the ages of 6, that he did wonders with! We have been through several trainings over the years, but nothing has stuck long term. Basic in home obedience and on-leash behavior was out of control! I would give Nathan zero stars if I could. My vet recommended Innate Dog Training when my rescue Corgi puppy failed his second round of group puppy class at Petsmart. My dog was high-energy and territorial, which was a problem with food and toys since we were a two-dog household. He would routinely growl and snap at our other dog, and he had even bitten me as I reached for food or toward his bowls. My initial consultation with Nathan was great, and I opted to board my dog for training because of the aggression and biting. Nathan said training would be 10 days, but 10 days turned into two weeks, which eventually turned into three and a half weeks, before he felt my dog was ready to return home (and of course, more $$ for each day that went by). Upon his return, the dog was clearly obedient to Nathan, but once Nathan left, he was back to growling and snapping over food. Nathan met me once for an emergency session, and then he recommended that I come to group classes, but the dog's behavioral problems persisted. He attacked our other dog, shredding his ear, and things got so bad that we had to keep both dogs physically apart in separate rooms of the house. I called Nathan in desperation, and he told me that the dog's behavior problems stemmed from the fact that I am a woman. He told me, "They don't call them man's best friend for no reason." Not only did Nathan belittle me, disrespect me, and make generalizations about my ability to handle an animal due to my gender, but he also stopped returning my calls and emails. I left multiple voicemails, which he just disregarded entirely. I understand that his profession is training dogs, but to run a business, one must also work with the people who own the dogs. A lack of communication is entirely unacceptable. I paid thousands of dollars and trusted my pet to Nathan, and for what? In the end, I made the heart wrenching decision to give my dog away to a rescue group in the hopes that he finds a better circumstance and a home where he can be the only pet. Our German Shepherd, Reno, had his very first session with Nathan when he was only 10 weeks old. I remember being nervous about him starting at such a young age but Nathan was extremely knowledgeable about what training was appropriate for a puppy and my nerves were calmed after the initial meeting. He was super gentle with him and it was amazing to see how quickly Reno progressed. After the first session he was already a better listener and after only 4-5 weeks he had all of the basic commands down. It has been over 3 years now and we have since gone through On-Leash, Off-Leash, and Defensive training with him and have loved every step of the way. There is no secret pill though.... lots of hours were spent practicing with him but Reno never seemed stressed in any way. We both looked at it as quality bonding time with our pup. My veterinarian recommended Nate after seeing a significant behavioral change in one of her other clients' dogs. I started working with Nate about 8 months ago after adopting a puppy and bringing her into our home which included a 7 year old stubborn and sometimes aggressive chihuahua. Raising a puppy is already overwhelming and requires consistent discipline but raising one with an older dog with engraved bad habits is even more difficult as they start to pick up on each others' behaviors (pack mentality). Nate came to my house for a free consultation and not only evaluated the dogs' behaviors but mine and my husband's. We seem to forget that WE need the training more than the dogs and that's where Nate and his partner excel. His methodology makes a lot of sense and is all about creating a stronger bond between you and your furry family member by commanding respect. Here's what I think, if you are willing to dedicate your time and effort into realizing the results that may be promised to you, then this is the BEST fit. If you just want to "fix" your dog and think that after a few sessions you will have the most obedient and best behaved dog, then go elsewhere. The icing on the cake for me is that besides the one-on-one training sessions, Nate invites his clients to weekly dog sessions which is the ultimate place for socialization and distraction training. My rescued terrier mix had severe anxiety around small and large dogs, would chase every bird and eat and chew everything in sight. Now that I understand dog psychology better, I am aware that the key is to bring your dog into a calm and relaxed state of mind and that these distractions will slowly become a part of their lives and not be the cause of their anxiety. I reached out to Nate because we wanted to support a local, small business that came highly recommended and has experience with challenging, working dog breeds. In quick summary, I have nothing but positive things to say about our experience. I'd like to share our story and offer some feedback regarding some of the negative comments. As a young, energetic, couple with no kids yet, my husband and I always knew we wanted to introduce a Belgian Malinois to our "pack." The working dog is smart, exceptionally loyal, driven, agile, and very energetic. However, this combination of extreme characteristics has the potential to lead to highly volatile situations if proper training isn't introduced early on and maintained throughout the life of the dog--it certainly isn't a breed I would recommend for anyone. We did over a year of research on the breed and knew it was going to be a challenge, so we wanted to be sure we were prepared. At 10 weeks old, our Malinois puppy, Mateo, began his in-home, on-leash basic obedience training with Nate's business partner, John. I was amazed how John commanded respect from Mateo, and how quickly Mateo abided. John never speaks over a whisper and uses very simple, limited, but effective corrections. I was immediately impressed and so excited to learn. In just a few weeks we had all the basic commands (heel, sit, down, stay, spot, come, leave it) down. An incredible trust and bond developed to the point where we could teach any commands as well (e.g. speak, shake, roll over, smile, etc.). When Mateo completed his in-home, on-leash training, we were able to begin his off-leash advanced obedience training and attend the group socialization classes. The group socialization classes are WONDERFUL. Dogs and humans are able to work on distraction training, integrate, and learn how to properly socialize (P.S. - BTW, just taking your dog to a dog park and hoping for the best is NOT the way). In group class, Nate teaches advanced commands such as stand, come around, food refusal, and basically everything you can imagine with 20 other dogs trying to distract your pup. The group classes have a "family" feel to them and we have made some great friends there. When you sign up with Innate Dog Training you are clients for life. That means Nate and John will work with you and your dog for as long as it takes until the training is complete, and the socialization classes are free to clients. Yes, the training programs may appear to come at a hefty price upfront, but the quality and results speak for themselves and are worth every penny. I would rather invest now than have to deal with a potential lawsuit later if I had no control of my dog going after a child on a bike. I would rather invest now so my dog understands that he needs to come to me immediately when he doesn't see that car in the road. I would rather invest now so my dog knows when to be intimidating, when to protect me, and when to be quiet on my command. I would rather invest now for a million reasons. An important thing to note is that you have to be open to education Nate and John will provide if you want results, and you have to be respectful of that relationship. I find my husband and I are really the ones being "trained," and it's mostly learning how to communicate and build trust with our dog. The more we focus on that, the more we can communicate with him to do just about anything. I want to stress that not every day will be rainbows and unicorns--not everyday will yield results. We continue to address new challenges, new bad habits, and new situations that we did not anticipate. But we approach those challenges with open arms, and most importantly, patience and persistence. We dedicate at least 4 hours a day to training and exercise on our own. We meet with John for one-on-one sessions once a week, and attend every Saturday group class. It takes a lot of time and a lot of patience, and to me, it's the best way to show your dog love, ensure the safety of our community, and guarantee a long lifetime of happiness. read more

I turned to Innate Dog Training when I realized that my once pleasant, happy-go-lucky, easy-to-get-along-with lab shepherd mix, Jimmy, needed further training. I wish that I could give 5-stars like the other reviews but, given my experiences, I'm not able to. My husband and I had planned to go on our first weekend trip since moving here and needed to board our dog (which we'd never done). But where he once got along with all pooches, his behavior around new dogs was now unpredictable and sometimes volatile since our move across country. We sent him to a popular doggy day care for a "test run" prior to our trip and were asked to pick him up because he wasn't socializing well with others. I was devastated and ready to cancel our trip. I called Nathan based on yelp recommendations and he seemed confident he could help us. Our first phone conversation in June was pleasant. We threw around the idea of an appointment later that day but ultimately settled on a day later in the week when my husband would be home. Later that same day, Nate rang my doorbell. He'd accidentally scheduled the appointment for that day and we went on with the meeting since he was already there (he stated he was preoccupied because his grandmother had had a stroke recently). He suggested behavior modification training, explained the process and the tools, and suggested boarding at his home for socialization. I left a deposit for training and scheduled a few days later for Nate to pick Jimmy up. I sent Jimmy off for boarding a couple of days before our trip. The plan was for approximately 2 weeks of boarding for socialization. During and after our trip I'd contact Nate and ask for updates or photos and would either not get a response or would get something that didn't answer my questions. For example, I asked how he was doing and if he was adjusting well to sleeping in a crate and I'd get a response that he was doing well and playing with other dogs right now. After a while of not responding I pressed him for answers and he stated his grandfather had been rushed to the hospital so he was unable to get in contact. When we were back from our trip we asked when my husband could come see him and Nathan would say that his classes were cancelled due to the heat (understandably) and he wouldn't be in the park that day. My husband, wanting to see his only "son", would have driven anywhere at any time to see him, even if the park classes were cancelled. But he never gave us any options to see him. Finally, he offered my husband a small window of time to meet at a park across town. And I hadn't seen my dog in over a week but my schedule didn't allow me to join my husband. When boarding was over we tried multiple times to start scheduling training. I work 3 days a week and we, for some reason, couldn't come together on a time. We did schedule something once (a month after our original meeting) but Nate had to cancel the night before due to personal reasons (his air conditioner broke - I fully understand and respect that people have lives, so I don't begrudge him that but we're a month from our original meeting and still no training sessions.). He didn't contact me about rescheduling for a few days. I was becoming skeptical and thinking that he wasn't the trainer for us, but I would tell him which days I was off, and he'd respond with suggestions for completely different days to schedule training. I am sure that Nate is as fantastic of a trainer as everyone says he is, but I found that a lack of communication, poor customer service skills, and I guess difficulty coming together between both of our schedules made this trainer a bad fit for us, so I'll never know. As a sidenote, Jimmy's blanket is still at Nate's house and I guess that's a blanket we'll never see again since I've texted a couple of times about it. read more

I paid Nate for his services with my 2 dogs in March/April/May 2014. I paid over $1,500. Our sessions were a little spread out because of my personal schedule. This was on me not him. Nate is very talented. I will never say he is not. We learned a lot from him and my dogs learned too. Unfortunately though I bought 2 extra leashes and 2 collars for my daughter's dogs which I have yet to receive over 1 year later. I had one session left and chose not to use it so asked Nate to use the session to just drop the equipment off on my porch. He did not do this. I texted hm multiple times with no reply. When I asked him to refund my money he would not do it and when I pushed he acted concerned and pushed the final session. By this point I was so frustrated with continued lack of response and the "run around" that quite frankly I did not want to see him ever again. I just wanted the leashes. I even asked if I could come to the park during a Saturday session but the leashes weren't in his van according to his text. I asked more than once. I gave up and personally gave my daughter her money back. I was shocked by the lack of communication considering he checks his phone constantly during training. Like I said, I hate writing bad reviews and this this is not a bad review of his skills... It's just an acknowledgement of his poor business skills. After your private training, he offers free group classes that help dogs continue their journey with distractions (other dogs). We will be starting our off- lease training soon, can't wait. Adequate dog trainers but customer service and communication seemed to be of no importance to either Nate or his partner. Constant no shows to appointments, hurried visits with little structure and failure to follow thru on numerous assurances all made for a negative experience. I called them 2 times and left messages before the holidays, no response... I called earlier this week and actually spoke with Nate but had to call him back to set up an appointment. I called later that day, he responds will a text saying: I'll call you later. I responded okay. No call later. I called the next day, no answer. My husband called and left a message, no response. I can't say enough positive things about Nate as a trainer or a person and he deserves way more than 5 stars!!!! When we started one on one on leash basic training he instantly built a rapport with us and our dog. It is obvious he knows what he is doing. Nate is patient with us as well as our dog and makes sure that we both have the commands down before the session is over. He responds quickly if we have questions and also offers boarding services for his clients. When it comes to leaving your fur baby behind while on vacation it is hard but we know with Nate he is in great hands! If you are looking for a trainer in town look no further. We called in Nate for help with our new puppy, she was very oral and mouthing, she then moved into some other issues that became very difficult and stressful to deal with. Nate was with us every step of the way with advice, changing training plans and just being all out an amazing resource for us. He is extremely approachable and takes time to answer my frequent texts as we work through having a challenging puppy, when we had old and calm girls who passed away. At 7 months old our Rottweiler was big and strong enough to literally drag my wife around the park if someone on a bike would ride by. Although he was not aggressive he wanted to play with everything and everyone around. With private lessons and the group socialization classes, we have a well behaved companion. Nate, owner of Innate Training, was and is fabulous with our little Capri girl, a now one year old mini goldendoodle. She began her onleash, in-home training journey early on--maybe 10ish weeks. She took to Nate's approach (firm yet warm and encouraging) very well. In the end, we have well-behaved, fun loving pup--according to us AND friends, family and strangers we come across on walks! Though we need to ensure that we continue to do the work with her to reinforce and finetune her behavior, Nate truly laided a solid foundation and taught us all the ins and outs as we are first-time time dog owners. Nate teaches your pup what to do and then brings you into the mix during the sessions, closing out with how to continue practicing the training in your everyday life with your pup. We don't go to the group training (part of the cost of onleash package which is offered Tuesday and Saturday mornings at local parks) as often as we should, but such a great offering and sense of community for both the pets and pet owners. As well, Nate has boarded our girl a number of times while we have been out of town. We know Capri is basically on vacation herself when staying at his home, having the chance to play with other pups and his children. But! Well before we got our Corgi puppy, we knew we wanted to do things right. I had researched Innate Dog Training and knew, based on reviews and videos of Nate's work, that we wanted to hire him. We knew we'd face some obvious challenges with the breed we chose and wanted to ensure we were proactive about things before the Corgi stubbornness, nipping, and excessive barking became a problem. Nate came for a consultation 3 days after our puppy arrived at our house (right at 8 weeks) and we started training as soon as he was 10 weeks old. I knew we had made the right choice when, during the consultation, Nate asked me exactly what my goals were for Russell. The teacher in me couldn't have been more impressed =) Russell is now a little over a year old. We went through off leash training and have been working for the last several months off leash. We also attend the weekly advance obedience sessions on Saturdays and truly cannot say enough about Nate's dedication to helping us integrate Russell into our home and helping us achieve each and every goal we had in mind. It is a joy to have a well socialized dog. Of course there will always be more work to be done as we introduce Russell to new distractions and situations, but we are extremely content with the work that Nate has done. Much of the training has been teaching us how to handle our dog, how to introduce new situations, and understanding why our dog does the things he does. A lot of people compliment our pup when we go out. They smile when we tell him to lay down and stay as we chat or when they see how great he does around their kids. If you're looking for a "quick fix" for your pet, or someone who will just do a couple sessions and teach your dog "tricks", then Nate is not your trainer. If you're looking for someone to teach YOU how to work with your pet, if you're willing to invest a lot of time, and if you're willing to view training as an on-going process with your pet, then you couldn't find someone better than Nate. read more
